Alright so I can mail items to the person next to me from my interface, but is it instant? Or does he have to wait one hour or so to receive the items?

Most games nowadays you receive mail pretty much instant. I expect this in GW2 or this method would be kind of useless if it is about giving away loot.
Originally posted by gaeanprayer Nupe, it was mentioned again in the Yogscast video of the Ascalon Dungeon run when one of them mentioned having lots of loot they didn't need and they'd need to mail things around to give it to the people who could make better use of it. I admit, this is a system I fail to see as convenient, but I'm not going to complain about it until I try it out. It's definitely on the radar though.
I don't see how anything you said conflicts with anything I said.

It's instant.

Sounds kind of stupid. I'm a pretty friendly party member. I usually click the trade button and give stuff to people in my party or my friends all the time. What if you were going to give something they already had? Time to mail it back. More time to type in their name instead of just clicking trade. What if you want to trade someone with a crazily long or hard to spell name?
Right click on a name. Select the "Send Mail" option. Open your inventory. Right click on the item you wish to attach. Send. Kill dragons.
Wait...they make you kill dragons too just to send mail??
Also, I've seen no evidence of a carrier pigeon animation. I think that rumor comes from a dev's (probably joking) explanation of how you don't need a mailbox.
The pigeon animation has been shown in some of the press beta videos and has been documented on GW2Wiki.

It took me a while to see it because I was expecting that the pigeon came when he checked his mail. It's actually when he receives it. As soon as the guy in this video clicks on the weapon rack to complete the heart you can see the bird come in from the left.

I have the feeling that was said with complete sarcasm.. for those that didnt catch it: Its no different than trading in any other game really. All you do is right click the person > send mail > move item sinto the mail box > click send. In other games its Right click > trade > move items to trade window > click confirm. same steps by different names. The advantage in GW is you can trade the same way from long distance too, rather than needing to be right next to them.
Yes I realize yo can send items in other games too, so this is nothing new. Whats new is that both methods ar eidentical in GW, where in other games its 2 different methods/tools to do the same task.
Why would anyone think that face-to-face trading in an online game is harder to trace than using an in-game mail system? It has nothing to do with gold-selling and everything to do with removing redundant systems.
They said you can trade using the mail system. Why would you assume they would avoid making it convenient to do so? Right-click -> Send mail. Wow. That was difficult. You don't need face-to-face trading when you can trade from anywhere. In the beta videos they don't even charge for postage.
Also, I've seen no evidence of a carrier pigeon animation. I think that rumor comes from a dev's (probably joking) explanation of how you don't need a mailbox.
The only concern I have is how this affects muling. What's the point of inventory space if you can mail anything to an alt at any time? Even easier when all of your characters share bank space.
The pigeon arrives around the 14:58 mark. It happens fast and there are other UI things happening, but you'll be able to see it fly onscreen, then quickly fly off again. There's a little chime when the delivery is made, but I'm not a 100% certain it's from the pigeon. It might have been something else that was going on.
Well, on the plus side perhaps this will make sure people create simple, easy to type character names, instead of those ones full of special characters, accents, or illegibility such as '1!1!11!!1' or even 'sfwerwewerweerwrry'.
Will just be too difficult to trade quickly with them.
Edit: whoops, seems I forgot about the ole "right click the person standing next to you" to send an email, assuming they'll have something like that though.

I think everyone has missed the key problem with this, and this is the first real negative I have come up with in the game...
Sending mail is perfect for:
1) giving away gear
2) selling gear
Sending mail is not good for:
3) trading gear
Think about it... I send you mail and you pick it up and don't send me back my item in return... now what? Do I file a GM request? I can send mail and they can receive it... no reciprocity. I can send mail COD, they can give me money. I cannot trade this nifty doohicky of the thingamajig for that random weapone of fiery death...
If this really is the only way of trading gear, they should allow us to set the timer for the trade, say we send the item nd set it to return in 10mins if the recipient doesnt touch it.
This game has a cash shop that can be used to purchase in game items, why would they have an AH or something of the like that would be a direct competitor to it. That would be stupid .. from a business point of view

I even heard that the more items you wanna send, the bigger the monsters you have to kill to be able to and the fatter and slower the pigeon that will carry your email! O_O
Early reports send they saw partially Birds that were THAT FAT, they couldn't tell if they are pigeons or white elephants with wings anymore. x_X
Ehem... ^_^
On a more serious note:
This system is more positive due to the following facts:
- it gives you and everyone else more room in your inventory.
Let's say you are in the middle of nowhere and your inventory is way too full, you don't wanna teleport from the waypoint and come back again OR you can't yet because you didn't reached it.
A friend sends you items you keep them in the mail till you are in a town and your inventory is not getting packed!
You sending stuff to your next character OR a guildie you trust so you can keep up free space in your inventory till you are done in the area, then ask him to just send back ( I know it sounds like a lot of work but if its between giving up a precious item or resources instead, you'd rather pick that option and keep both).
- A friend needs extra resources to craft this shiny huge sword he dreamed off and is capable to craft now.
He whispers you if you have some, you say "Yes but I'm in the middle of nowhere"!
Guess what? No need to run to him and no need for him to wait for you either.
Mail and your Pigeon brings the stuff to him while you are caring on with your quest, dungeon, making out with a centaur, whatever...
Both you and your friend saved time and could keep doing what you wanted to do in no time!
I think this type of trading is great and makes everything more comfortable and secure when it comes to scamming among other things.
Other than that it was already confirmed that a marketplace will be there additionaly to.
Yes, I agree that in certain times it would be "comfy" to just trade directly with a friend.
However, in GW1 we were also able to drop a item and let friends pick it up directly too.
Maybe it works in GW2 aswell? Can't tell but it would be a big plus for people that are longing for a direct trading function.
In my opinion the mail system saves you time, inventory space and lots of traveling when your guildie, friend or someone you wanted to trade with is in a other place. Additionaly its the most secure type of trading cause a track record can show that the guy that scammed you is lying when he/she does as if they didn't received anything.

I am personally glad it is gone. People tend to annoyingly open up a trade window with something, either to just show something expensive or hoping you would bid for whatever junk.
When i give something away to a guildie i will just mail it anyways.

Trading between players, with the mail system, certainly looks inconvenient in GW2.

I still say they need to have the pidgeon drop a bag on your head, then do the splatt animation, then a bubble "you got mail"!
lol @ calling someone 'assimilated' and then crying 'ftw!'... just made me chuckle
Sometimes the people not bitching just know something you don't, just sayin'.
In case you all didn't see this, there is no mailbox...it's a mail icon on your UI. You don't have to run anywhere to complete a trade.
Oop, noticed that this was covered already in this thread (need moar coffee)
