I got into my first pvp battle right afther I crossed that bridge leaving Lumbertown. Open World PVP is one of the main things I look for in a mmo because it brings an element of exitement that instanced pvp games cant touch.
It's pretty bad, go ahead and believe that it's all about skill but I GUARANTEE someone who outgears you or outlevels you by even a few levels will beat you everytime.
I was level 28 getting one shotted by people who were level 32, had fun until it just kept happening by then it was just frustrating. Getting one shotted by someone who is 4 levels above you should never happen in any game, much less a game where it's supposed to be more about "skill".
*check combat log* Took 9,999 damage....GG
Sorry but seems like you just really suck at pvp and want to blame the game instead of blaming your self. Go out and practice with your toon and learn it in and out. When you see pvp stop and spectate and see whats going on.
I did alot of PVP this weekend against higher levels. I won some and I lost some and each win / loss was because of how I played my toon. Of course levels / gear mean something in this game but getting one shotted by a level 32 at level 28?
Typical response.
Just so you know I wasn't alone, the same thing kept happening to my friend, we did plenty of pvp at lower levels and that was fine. Then on saturday night when we were 27-28 and decided to just go looking for pvp instead of leveling is when we ran into getting one shotted time after time. How do you justify that? Because I know I didn't imagine it.
Anytime I insta-died I had to check my combat log to see wtf just happened. Sorry but there's no justifying "learn your character" when you get one shotted.
Yes a level 32 player, can one shot a level 28.
These classes would be a berserker, sorcerer or archer. If they hit you with their fully charged attacks(which should never happen imo) and critical hit you will get one shot.
Also, what class were you playing?
The PvP is very skill based though, I lost the video, but someone from Ktera with tons of experience was pking on NA last weekend, he was a slayer and he went into a 1v5 and came out victorious, he was the same level.
He was easily prediciting every move they made, singleing them out for one or two hit burts, slowly nagging their health down one by one, until they were all dead.
Looks pretty boring. I prefer pvp that can numb my lips every once and a while.
you mean a juggle fest?
Also yes 1 lvl makes so much difference its not even funny, but than again your not really suppose to fight until your capped. With the current lvling speed i don't see it as an issue because you lvl so fast whatever lvl advantage people had on you be gone.
Yeah i'm gonna have to say that your pretty bad also. It's not very hard to get gear in this game so don't go blaming it on that and the difference in stats between a lv30 blue gear vs lv28 greens is not that great and definitely not enough to get 1 shotted unless you lost situational awareness and a DPS wrecked you Lol.
~btw you never said what class you were trying to play~
I'm really not surprised that bad's will instantly blame the game for their lack of skill and team work within a party. I mostly tend not to respond to this type of QQ post because I know they tend to be generated by non-pvpers but i just could not resist.

Ghostly has a point though. The level scaling (or whatever you call it) is just bad. I was getting 1 shotted by a level 24 as a level 16. I know its a bit of a level gap...but still being one by someone who is suppose to be questing in the same area as you is just not fun. It has something to do with even being a couple of levels higher than the other person makes you criticle hit them a TON more.
In these level based MMO's its too be expected, but IMO they don't do a good job of at least trying to make similar levels competitive...as it is if your a couple of levels lower your pretty much screwed (unless your a ranged class against a melee, I was able to kite some higher levels but if they got a hit on me I was dead).
I don't think gear makes a huge difference though, when your the same level it really just comes down to skill more than anything.
All that being said Tera does have a great PvP system...if all the players are the same level its a lot of fun.
GW2 is just the game you are looking for, it has instanced PvP where big mean people can't one shot you. If you are level 1 you can play with level 80s joy of joys that worked out really well in SWTOR.
I havent played it, but I have never been a fan of PvP that is over in a couple seconds, I think damage should be to where it takes 10-15 seconds atleast to kill someone...give more time for back and forth tactics, not 1-2 hit combos..But hey, if your having fun, and enough are thats all thats needed.
[Mod Edit]
No 1v1 duel has been shorter than 30 seconds for me...
and it was just over thirty seconds because I failed to dodge a sorcs sleep and a fully charged sorc is a deadly sorc.
It's amusing I get flamed and accused of not being a pvper.
I hate instance pvp, love open world, that was never my complaint. I ALWAYS choose the pvp servers when I play MMO's...it's no fun without the risk of getting attacked by another player.
My entire complaint was getting one shotted, whether you see it coming or not, in my opinion it should not happen in a game like this especially when you are within level range to fight someone.
The fully charged abilities do a ton of damage for a reason. It's extremely hard to hit people with them. Almost impossible, unless your opponent is not paying attention, or brain dead. Which of those categories did you fall into when you got one shot?
It's always a safe bet he may not have been paying attention, a quick sleep from a sorc or an archer hiding 15m away charging a shot would not be dodgeable if you aren't aware of their presence.
While mid-level PvP can be interesting, when was the last time it defined the quality of a PvP in general in an MMO?
I'd be more worried if class balance is way off (it never is perfect) at max level, than I would worry about what is happening at some level range. This is not the first MMO where some classes have some sort of advantage while levelling, nor it'll be the last.
Pretty boring imho. All i see is, random aim casting and thats pretty much it.
I'll say that just about every time it happened, I didn't see it coming. That's also the reason that it's hard for me to even tell you what classes did it to me. All I ever noticed was instantly dying and immediately getting frustrated because of it.
Since a couple of you have avoided insulting me and instead explained it to me, it reminded me of this: The first time it happened to me was from a ranger near/same level as me and my friend started explaining that it was a charge up skill that I didn't know about and could've avoided it if I would've known what rangers do. So I was fine with that but once we got higher up and the one-shotters happened more often, I just got extremely frustrated.
Also for anyone still wondering, I was playing a slayer and loved it in pvp.
If you didn't see it coming its probably archer, zerker would require them to be next to you, and sorc skill are pretty flashy. Archers arrow however are pretty much invisable if you don't see the archer XD
the lvling scale is a bit bad, but everything balance out when your equal lvl, and considering how fast you lvl its managble. Although thats why our guild has some lvl requirement and policy, you hit cap with in certain time or basically stay out of the guild until your cap because if you stall too long and your not capped, you become a liability to the guild as some guild ONLY farm other guild lower lvl than hid -.- i mean i don't mind them killing our lower lvl for points but when thats all they do it does get pretty irrating for the lower lvl and rest of the guild. So more benfitsual to just invite back in once capped. However if your guild is like HUGE thats much as big of an issue as you got people to help the lower lvl.
Honestly it was most likely an archer, if they were hiding and sniped you with a fully charged arrow you'd just die without really seeing anything.
Also it's funny you mentioned you are a slayer, they are actually a great counter to archers and can usually beat archers if played right, through some practice you'll be showing those archers who's boss in no time i'm sure. :P
problems with the PVP:
invisible people
nearly invisible people (red circles and names walking around)
gank squads.
my first pvp experiance was 1 V 5 or 7 (i thought it was 1 v 3) and they were 8 levels above me, right out of lumber town. i was able to burst down only one person, but not having all of them even at the red circle level i lost, no chance. and only after i died did they start appearing. and gloated over my corpse.
the levels don't IMBA the game much which is nice, and similar with 1 v multiple and other outnumbering stuff. but the biggest problem is invisible people killing you.... not sure what causes the bug but kills the game for me. also i later tried to get revenge on one of the guys i saw, he was still outlaw status and i was unable to 'target them' so i bursted my cooldowns and he remained undamaged, then charged up a spell and killed me pretty damn fast.
before people say i suck or was using a wood computer or poor connection, that relates to how the specs operate. if they don't test for it then the play experiance can leave a bad taste in part due to personal error, but in part because you are told you can play and compete and turns out, nope. that was half of the game to me, and the pure pve servers are without redemption.
it depends on your computer adn setting, unless you have max out setting, most of the time its set to only render 20 models at once, thus you have invisable people, change the setting to 50 or unlimited and it helps. however if your computer isn't good enough it takes a while to render. Also it also seem to be some issue on the programing side as well as the rending speed is too low i hope they fix it soon.
I have not had that problem...but then again, my computer is pretty high end.
Maybe try sending in a support ticket to En Masse to see if they can address the issue or help you resolve it?
I feel for you, being one shotted blows and a few of the people here feel the need to insult instead of actually thinking/conversing. With that said, you pretty much answered your own question/concern about it. True pvp really should be about practice, knowing your enemies, and being smart enough to know each situation. I'm guessing you really don't have all that much experience with the game and if you ever did give the game a chance, you'd get better and the one shot'd hits would almost cease to happen. I honestly never tried the game, just adding my 2 cents into what I've seen on videos and researched. Still might try this game, but who knows.
