Monthly Sub vs.Cash Shop

Mythios11Mythios11 Member Posts: 129

I'd much rather pay a monthly sub than have a company use a cash shop to supplement their income.

Cash shop's are a slipperly slope.  Maybe they don't have a lot of "pay to win" items in it at launch but rest assured, if ArenaNet finds that it's not as profitable as they anticipated they will most certainly add more enticing items down the road.

They didn't do it to the first Guild Wars why would they do it to the second?

Over this cash shop, plus the diamonds to gold scheme?  Yeah, I'd rather pay a sub.

At this point, I think most studios have figured out that a CS has more income potential than a sub. Top that off with a box price and you have (on paper) excellent profit potential.

It's going to take a lot more money to turn a profit on GW2 compared to GW1.

    Hmm another one of these....

Again, if it's like the cash shop in GW1, then there is nothing to worry about

Must suck to have so little self-control that paying $150 or more per year is better than optional services and goods.

Why would it be? It's neither the same model of a game as GW1 was, nor is the same time as people in the west are more accepting nowadays to a cash shop idea than they used to be at the time of the first game.

GW1 and GW2 are two very different games, in two very different time periods. We certainly need to keep that in mind.

Depends on how optional they would be. When your guild pressure you for the best items for your dungeon runs or for your pvp runs, how well are you going to resist?

Yup, and 2-3m sales would cover development costs (i'd estimate around $100m) for the 6 years due to digital.

Also, there's not a single P2W item. So it's not 'not many', it's a big fat zero.

On topic: £10 a month for what i'm already getting for free? lol, no. WoW's cash shop is hardly any different from what GW2's is.

It sucks when someone with no self control spends $150 a month and then has an advantage over someone who doesn't in terms of leveling speed, PvE, and especially PvP.

Now someone is going to say, Guild Wars 2 is different, no cash shop item, no leveling speed, no gear, no gold will give someone else and advantage.  To which I say, we'll see, but I'm not buying it.  I and several others have already pointed out ways that people with money to burn could have an advantage over other players.

The gear and weapon system work the same in this game as it did in the first one. Max stat gear could be obtained at a pittance and gear only served as skin. The only difference was that the cash shop was added later, so the costumes where an all encompassing single piece of gear. In GW2 there is more freedom to play with the armor and wep models so there will be a greater variety of vanity costumes.

Pretty easily considering any 'gear' in the cash shop is cosmetic, made so that level 1 characters can wear it, and as such it is extremely likely they simply transmute like the HoM items do.

i hate the whole cash shop idea now.  what if millions of people who play free to play, pay to win games start asking for power items in Gw2.  although i think it's unlikely, it's entirely possible that Ncsoft or Anet or whoever is in charge of the cash shop decides to start selling power items to make more money.  it just leave the door open to too much imo.  the revenue stream after box sales will be coming from people who use the shop, it only makes sense that they would listen to those paying customers.

    I've got the straight edge.

The only way i can see an advantage would be level speed "maybe". Gear stats cap so there will be no advantages in PvE. Leveling speed isn't that big a deal. Took forever to level a priest versus a pally in wow but people still played priest and didn't complain that they were broken because they leveled slower

Two months ago, I was singing the tune right along with all the other fans... monthly subs are no longer needed, they aren't giving you anything for that money, etc. etc.

What a difference two months makes. Now that we have a clearer picture of what it seems to require in terms of design compromises and changes, now that we see the complex weaseling and semantics required and the complete disparity in the rules for players, I've changed my tune.

Give me back the sub fee, please.

I advice you to leave mmos completely b/c even p2p mmos are starting to put item shop's in game. So I guess you are on the loosing position.

And the IS in GW could be so much worse. Right now I don't see anything which will make me feel inferior to ppl who pay.

I could see your point with the PvP thing, if the PvP in GW2 wasn't structured to be a completely level playing field. Gainig XP faster in PvE won't help you win more matches, since 5v5 has everyone at level 80 with all skills unlocked, and even WvW offers a stat boost to level 80 to stop people being one-shotted.

As it is, all that's going to happen is that some people will be playing level 80 PvE before I get there. Big whoop. Doesn't stop me getting there in my own time. And as for dungeons? If someone starts telling me I "need" cash shop items to play it through with them, they go straight onto my ignore list. I can't see any other way that it would affect me directly.

    Again, why?

Everything you've seen about the game has nothing to do with the shop (which, the very 'worst' item in it is still purely cosmetic when it boils down to it). You're letting unjust fears get the better of you.

Ha so much for being skeptical, this is exactly what I be talking about. One already in this very thread knows it ain't happening what is he doing? Yea I know lol.

As long as it isn't P2W* I prefer the cash shop. At least there I can pay nothing and still have the whole game available without restrictions.

    * NOTE: The way I see it there are two ways people use P2W. First one is "if you get any advantage by paying, it's P2W", if that's the way you see it, then it is indeed P2W. Personally, I see P2W as in "you can't get past a certain point/level/gear without paying" so I'm fine with Anet's aproach for now.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

Tbh, this view is stupid. If looking at it this way, any game with DLC is pay to win, as they have the advantage of accessing that DLC.

Because there are millions who would stop handing them their money. Everyone knows games with abusive cash shops fail in the west. This is a western made RPG, not a korean grind fest, they know their target market would rage quit at a P2W cash shop.
