I agree. The big "review" magazines/web-sites companies are in bed to various degrees with the companies trying to sell you the games! To various degrees it's not in their interests to say negative things. It's all money... All pushing for he money... Good luck finding honest reviews of much of anything these days! The cancer of laissez-faire devours all.

I am talking Brunhilde big like when she looks at you, you can't tell if she wants to eat you, kill you, or worse have sex with you. Barrel chested with arms the size of oak trees and a face that would shatter any mirror even remotely tempted to stare back at her.

I wonder how we would all feel if the only male toons we could make all looked like Edward from Twilight? How about even worse Sting in the metal speedo from Dune? Just running around mostly naked looking like a pixie but you are suppose to be a great warrior in full plate. That would be kinda stupid, don't you agree?

Personally I would have loved to seen them make female Char bigger and look meaner than the male Char.

You asked for a 300 lb Valkerie looking female toon.  Valkyries are most often portrayed as large (but very attractive) females.

How many people could so much as pull off puttin something like that on, let alone wearing it in a major movie! Man's got rock-star balls behind that speedo!

Although I tend to agree with you for some blatant articles/publications, I think it's a bit of a conspiracy theory to assume every magazine's review/preview is entirely biased.

What's the alternative?  Sure, you can play the game for yourself but if you want another's opinion, I'd trust a professional reviewer more than one of the emotionally narrow minded posts some of the forum posters here make.

Believe me, I take everything with a grain of salt.

From the very beginning, he makes it clear that he doesn't think there is anything wrong with MMO's currently. <--Huge Red Flag.

And why does he keep comparing so many things to SWTOR? And he doesn't do it in a way that is unbiased (and yes thats his job). He is not responding to trolls on mmorpg forums, he is writing for PC Gamer.

I think it is safe to say it is not the fact that he has critcisms but its the way he goes about it. Because I have read other articles where the author had plenty of criticisms for GW2 but it didn't bother me.

Maybe because SWTOR is the latest AAA MMO to come out?  Would you prefer if he compared it to some obscure long forgotten MMO...?

That's kind of the point.  a "professional" reviewer is no different than some random guy.  Most of the time you can't trust so called "professional" reviewers, you have to understand that its just one persons opinion (who if you look into their past work, has no more qualifications than most gamers).  Too many people take what these so called "professional" reviewers say, that they treat it like fact.

While there were a couple of negative comments as well as a few questions (quite reasonable ones, imo) I thought the article was pretty good.

The writer commented on the gameplay as he saw it and I for one was rather psyched by the 'run up and get active' aspects he saw.

I know this is just one players view of the 'dynamic event system' but I was genuinely excited and am now even more looking forward to playing next weekend

Not sure what the ranting about the negative view of the female characters is though. That was a whole 2- 3 sentences in the 3 page article.

I heartily agree with you.  But at least his review is somewhat well written and he tries to appear unbiased.  Posts like:

"This guy should go back to writing for SWTOR.. perhaps he can write about how it isn't dead because ppl took advatage of FREE game time."

don't really scream out objectivity to me.

I would prefer if he didn't compare it to any game and just based it on its merits. Maybe that was too hard. You know, paid writer for a large gaming magazine. It wasn't hard for him when he wrote the SWTOR review.....just saying.

"I opt to play a female human warrior. My choice of race is down to the fact that the human starting area – lush farmland under attack by roaming centaur warbands – is the most frequently cited example of GW2’s evolving ‘events’ system, where quests are thrown out in favour of dynamic objectives based on the independent actions of players, monsters and friendly NPCs. I become a mail-clad warrior, meanwhile, because I want my character to put some bloody clothes on. The land of Tyria is populated by clear-faced underwear models, and it’s an uphill struggle to make a female character who doesn’t look 15 years old. The best I can do is a kind of Disney Joan of Arc, a waif-thin airbrushed beauty wielding a sword bigger than she is. I avoid spellcasters entirely because there’s only so much Renaissance-themed fetish gear I can handle."

This paragraph along makes me want to hit the guy, and this starts his article. This is what is supposed to make us want to read on and instead its him saying I chose the race everyone else did, chose the sex of my toon so I could bitch about female chars not having enough cloths and then insulted EVERY clothie... Dont you think if he had gone away from the things that irritated him from the get from the get go.. the things he could EASILY change like race! that he would have had a better view of the game? This is why his opinion isn't a great one.. and I don't even know all of it because I didn't read it past the 1st page.. COULDNT read it.

You know how ppl bitch about fanbois and ppl having biased opinions and they cannot accept what they say... Well this is it. This is an opinion that is skewed by his choices.. choices that weren't good for him. I listen quite a bit to LOGICAL or INSIGHTFUL criticism for this game. This is not it, nor would it be a good possitive review if thats what it is because he has started off badly. So call me what you want.. I really don't care but don't say that I am just a fanboi and don't want to see anything against GW2.

As GW2 is trying to be something different (than most MMO's), and its not even out, and he played for all of what seems like 20-30min,  i would rather he didn't compare it to any MMO.  He starts the article already attacking A.Nets veiw that they think there is something missing in MMO's currently, That they are trying to change things up, and he states that he thinks thats wrong.  He could of approached the game with an open mind.

The Shadow Behemoth fight is fun. As a warrior, you can actually can go close combat with the boss, but for only a couple of seconds, otherwise it's prettyy much a wipe. Youtube has a video of this fight, very interesting. The warrior can use a bow, so ranged combat would be an option for this type of fight as well. There is a lot of movement and dodging going on, and rezing players is encouraged!

Yeah that arguement about females wearing too little kind of annoys me. I mean, even the women who work for Anet say they like the sexy armours. If you don't like it then roll a male character, make your character fatter to match your own weight or choose the armours you deem acceptable.

Really, it's annoying to see people asking game devs to cover up all characters just because it's their personal preference to wear a turtle neck to the beach.

The rest of the preview is nothing new. It's just like a play diary of crap we've been seeing from every convention.

What do you mean "the rest"...lol.  The character creation thing isn't new either.

Yeah, it is a nice article, and yeah, nothing new.  It is probably aimed at people who haven't taken notice yet...

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

Truth to tell , the article is not so critical as the beginning implies.

The only gripe i have with it is this guy genuinely seems to think that trying anything that sets a game apart from the main trends is a weakness, not a strength. His main criticism of the game are on the consequences the lack of trinity and specialized roles will have on the social aspect of the game..but we have plenty of trinity based mmos there, some of them very good ones (rift . wow. eq2 to name just a few)   Someone has to try something different sometime.

and thats just it.  The only social aspect of the Trinity happens in PVP or in dungeons.   He didn't try pvp and he did not have a chance to try a dungeon.  So he has no right to talk about the so called "lack" of social aspects of the game when he never got a chance to try them.

It is not about that kind of stuff being in the game... It is that in most games that is the ONLY choice. We are not talking about going to the beach we are talking about fighting to the death with pointy weapons where donning a bikini WILL get you killed. Asthetics is not an excuse for stupidity.

If you want to run around in a chain bikini and pretend you are protected from the cold let alone a steel blade... That should be your choice... Just like it should be a choice to actually wear meaningful armor and not look like an anorexic supermodel from a Victoria Secret ad.

I am not advocating the removal of a certain image, I am advocating the addition of other options in case someone does not want to play pedobear fodder.

Lack of sexy is exactly what's missing from western MMO's.

Pretty much and that is the decision you have to make, Before buying the game. Also what about the sylvari or asura? or did that conveniently slip your mind?

This is a stawman argument. So anyone that does not want to play an anorexic supermodel in a chain bikini is railroaded into a single race?

Here is the thing, what I am talking about is not necessarily specific to GW2. In fact I think the armor types for females are pretty well done and not insanely stupid like other games (Tera). However, the writer had a valid criticism which is that should a player want to make an ugly or fat male/female character they should have the option to do so. It would not be that hard to do and seems to be left out because there is a promoted sterotype in the gaming industry that female toons must be beautiful and/or seminaked. The irony that is missed on most is that male toons do not suffer this same limitation nearly as much.  Now we can throw in a race or two which by the base looks is not attractive and pawn that off as the "ugly" option, but that only detracts from the real discussion which is why more variety is not given to ALL races.

Considering the demographic of this world... why should 99% of the female toons in games be forced to look like maybe 1% of the female population on earth? Seems stupid and misogynistic.

I don't see a reasonable argument against what I am saying... I am not demanding supermodel toons be taken out... I am saying there should be more variety in all toons. Thinking the asthetic limitations currently in most games is a good thing seems backwards to me.

Depends on what you think is sexy.    He was asking for an option that was not what he called sexy or something that is fully clothed, well the Charr and the Asure give that option.  Also the Western MMO's can't make a good looking avatar if their lives depended on it.  I would much rather have only the option for "attractive" options than all "unattractive".
