Speaking about videos like this one.
Dragon comes up, makes an awesome entrance, and then stands there with little targety things for you to attack. It doesn't chase anyone around, and it doesn't pounce around the battlefield like TERA mobs do (which I had expected them to).
Instead major Dragons literally stand there, or fly straight up a couple feet while something diff happens (normally summoning mobs or something to fight you?). After flying in the same static spot for a bit they come back down to stand EXACTLY where they were before breathing in a single direction or swiping 180 degrees infront of them.
Am I the only ones disappointed in this aspect ?
Seriously, watch as he just stands there attacking/swiping forward. Never moves from that spot while he gets beat on, flys up into the air at some point to summon mobs for a "mini-stage", and then comes back down to stand in place....breath in one direction....only to be beat on with little targety thingies like you're playing Shadows of Collosus or w/e that game was.
Anyone else ?

Yeah.... I don't think people are playing GW2 for the boss fights. It has a lot of great features, just not those. I think it would be kind of difficult to develop overly complicated boss fights without the defined roles and direct group coordination that isn't found in soft grouping.

Everquest?
Big ass Dragons that you had to worry about hate, aggro, etc. They moved, and reacted based on different events. Even EQII being the horrible game that it was had better Dragon events.
DAOC had half decent Dragon events too that worried about how many people were hitting it, how many DPS were hitting it, and how many healers were active rather than hate management. The events would also change based on # of players to make it drastically harder if you brought 100 instead fo 50.
Also, BABY dragons O_o;? Those things are huge, you're joking right X_x? What are the higher end-game dragon fights? You running on their backs smacking giant mountains that are their joints x_X?
Also, "top Level" or not those dragons are extremely dumb and static fights. Just saying .

got any video? I remember most being very static like wow, rift.. ect
not ot mention both those videos are very old the shatterer one is years old so no telling how the mechanics will be at launch

Wow, took a while for this thread topic to resurface. Wonder if it'll be the new hot criticism again.
While it's true that the dragons don't really roam much, they aren't all static either. Most of the dragon fights consist of more than just spanking a dragons toe until he dies. There's also lots of mobs and environmental factors going on as well.
Furthermore, the larger dragons are in instances, because they are apparently too large for the open world environment. We'll see.
You're kidding right O_o? Have you never raided in EQ/EQII/DAOC? I've had to manage those before, and we've had stupid people screw up the whole encounter and the dragon moving around going on a rampage masacreing people :O!

From all the videos I've seen it seems worse than "Tank & Spanking" dragons from previous titles. It doesn't chase you, and just stands there getting beat on while it attacks in a single direction that you just have to watch out for?
That's all I was saying . Even if it isn't a "Top Level" event those "Baby Dragon" events look as static and boring as the tutorial end-boss fight.
Just disappointed is all.

they moved but I wouldn't say they had good AI no MMO does really.. there's a difference.. also the shatterer fight has a TON more going on then anything in those games for a single mid levelish fight

youtube all those epic dragon battles you remember.. they aren't as epic and dynamic as you probably remember them.

I noticed this too, and it's not just the large dragons that do it. ALL of the large meta-event bosses are static.
I hope that's not the case post-release
Because then people would QQ that the dragon is smarter then the players ,and we certainly don't want that know , do we? Anyways, good luck to GW2 and it's players.
I remember the strategies for most of them. Granted the older ones were meant for 40 people, but the newer ones were meant for around 20 and had more entricate strats.
For instance, there's a Dragon-Boss at the top of the Erudin Library in EQ2 that you had to fight on floor tiles that dropped away and re-appeared after some time based on a random timer, and color rotation.
A lot of times if you didn't watch the floor colors half the raid would drop into nothingness and die . Then you had to worry about the orbs on the four corners that augmented the Dragon-Boss-Dude's abilities that you had to choose which to kill based on the encounter rotation.
Granted, I wasn't talking about the AI all that much with regards to the Shatterer encounter, and more with how simple it feels. The dragon, for such a large involved event, seems far far too static to be really scary or impressive . If it moved around the battlefield rather than being tied down to that singular spot it'd be far more involving or enriching.
I guess the REAL thing I'm sayign is that it doesn't look more impressive than older styles of Boss encounters other than being technically "Open World", but it still looks like a static encounter that repeats itself on a random interval.

Your description sounds a lot like Onyxia, and many other "Tank & Spank" dragon fights in other modern MMOs.
While I agree, it's a step backward compared to some of how the older, classic MMOs handled Dragon Fights, it is by far not "worse" than the Tank & Spanking of more recent MMO games. It is, in fact, pretty much the same.
This whole thing was just the subject of an editorial here on MMORPG. You need to pay attention in class better!
Did you notice that those dragons are about the size of the small mountain the first one landed on? Look at the video closely and do you notice the players are like small dots next to him. Link me a boss the size of them that actually moves around all the time.

these are scripted RAID encounters but they have a lot going on besides the giant boss as you can see in the shatterer video.. the smaller DE bosses are more what you are looking for and the dungeon bosses as well

Meh, I'll have to leave it alone until I experience it for myself. Unfortunately, unlike SWTOR...Rift...etc, it's hard to judge GW2 without experiencing it first hand. Granted I did also experience SWTOR, Rift, ETC in Beta & Open Beta, but it was still fairly easy to know how bad they were without buying it.
GW2 seems like the opposite, so we'll see how it goes. The only thing I hope is that you don't get disappointed with it Aerowyn as you seem very enthused about it .

>< mmorpg = generally pretty static fights
If you want more movement and interactivity in battle systems I think you should look towards more action oriented games.
Like: Monster Hunter series, Dark/Demon Souls, Dragon's Dogma, PSO series... dogma would be a good start it's a very easy game out of the ones I played.
That shouldn't be the case. TERA did a good job with making non-static boss fights, but unfortunately they decided to go a heavy instanced route with it.
Does that mean MMO's in general mean Static Fights are the only way? Certainly not, but no one has been brave enough or smart enough to realize people want something more than standing in place and whacking on a dumb AI.

I was a little disappointed in what I saw as well to be honest.
The health of both players in the videos never dropped below half. Heck, in the first video I don't think she was even touched once during the entire fight, and only at the end after the dragon died did she get hit by some kind of lingering poison cloud.
They certainly looked good, and I applaud the DE's overall, but I've seen some better PvE video where it looked a bit more difficult. However, I will say overall, from what little I've seen, PvE looks pretty easy. I just pray it gets a lot more difficult, because I'm mainly looking to be challenged a bit.
been playing these games since meridian and countless MUDs before than even hosted my own on the old BBS.. I know by now when it's just "hype" and when a game is actually something more.. especially after already putting over 80 hours into the game.

Umm...isn't that the whole point of a lot of the way combat is handled in GW2? People who just "stand in place and whack on a dumb AI" in GW2 seems to be the ones that die first, from what I've seen. Obviously they didn't get it perfect in all of the fights, but even just in general dynamic events, standing still and mashing buttons gets you killed more quickly.
