I admit that I love playing WoW. But I've played it forever and I'm looking for something new. Unfortunately MMO devs having been producing games just like WoW. I don't need another WoW, I already have one.
I'm super excited about GW2 because it is aiming to be different. I hope it is. I plan on playing it for some time to come. And when I need to take a break, WoW will still be there. And when I need to take a break from WoW, I hope GW2 will still be there. Hell, I might even play both at the same time.
I don't understand the need for a WoW killer, or why everything else needs to fail.

Ego.
Some people are not satisfied with being a player of "the best PVE" or "the best PVP" or "the best RP" game; They want to be the player who is on "the best game in all of existence".
WoW in general was seen as the best game of all MMOs, and some people see that as a bragging right, something that makes them above the "losers who play all the other shitty games". It also means they become threatened the moment something looks like it could be successful AND is doing something different. They generally cannot grasp the idea of a game being different from what they are playing AND being successful, so they become angry. And you know what happens when fanbois get angry...
NOW BEFORE SOMEONE GOES BERSERK ON ME:
This doesn't apply to everyone; only the people who cannot accept the idea of competition between various good games and feel the need to dominate everything to the point of stagnation.
Brilliant post. I would add, however, that your assertion should be carried one degree further. Many of people we would call 'fanbois' DO want to be the player who is on "the best game in all existence" but they ALSO have a sense of accomplishment in said game and have this somewhat conceited self-image that they are "the best player in the best game in all of existence". The emergence of something new threatens their self-image and thereby the derived relevance they feel they have on the world.
For example, I have a friend who exclusively plays shooters. He is very good at them. He will play a new shooter and NOT be good. In his mind, the only logical explanation for his poor performance is either a) cheaters or b) the game is buggy or the mechanics are flawed and he quickly diagnoses the game as lame or unworthy of his time.
He simply cannot wrap his head around the fact that OTHER people are good at games or a new game has a mechanic he is unfamiliar with but other players are.

I was going to bring this up on it's own point, but I think your post is a good one to quote for it.
Before I speak my mind I do agree with the video as well as you Tayah in that the more successful MMO's that are released the better it is for gamers everywhere. The more MMO's competing for our time and money the better it is for everybody because competition breeds innovation.
With that said, I have to dissagree with the fact that the recent MMO's that have been coming out, the one's he mentioned in the OP's video WoW, Rift, SWTOR and even Aion are all WoW clones in structure. This however, is NOT a good thing for the MMO market, because developers are looking at what's worked in the past and tried to imitate it. Because this is happening, the opposite of innovation is occuring through competition, and that's stagnation. This was the reason why I was torn between wanting games like SWTOR to fail and succeed because if it failed, developers would have seen that a space WoW would not succeed even with Star Wars in the title. Same with Rift, I was hoping it would also fail because of it being a WoW clone.
At least that is what has been occurring up until the release of games such as Tera and GW2. For the last several years the MMO market has been stagnate and that is negative for everybody, for the gamers, developers, everybody. I'm just thankful that developers are starting to see this and breaking the mold to see that innovation in this industry can bring forth evolution and lots of profit. And that's when I think everybody wins.

Good post. I hope devs will see what doesn't work and learn lessons from the failures and finally get it that poorly done clones is not innovation because you stick a new name on it.

As usual a pretty good vid from Taug. Considering how level-headed he is in all his videos, his channel is one of my favourite ones to watch. Hopes he keeps bringing out decent videos.
it's true. and no offense to the wonderful gw2 fans (i'm not wonderful. i'm fabulous. and humble), but gw2 fans have been a lot more militant than fans for other recent games. true it's a chicken/egg problem (did the haters escalate it first or the fanbois?), but still. ... oh well. it's launching and in a few weeks attention will have gone elsewhere while we're busy kicking zhaitan's butt.
It drives me crazy when people do his #3. "Hahaha you're a fanboy because you bought into the hype! You've been tricked! Just wait until 3 months after release!"
Sorry, dude. If I like a game, it is because I gave the game my own critical assessment and came out on the other end of the critique with a highly positive overall opinion. It works as follows:
Game is good, therefore I become a fan.
NOT
I am an indoctrinated fan, therefore I brainlessly claim the game is good.
^^this right here, I couldn't say it better no matter how I tried. It's one thing to say a game is awesome because of some CGI you just saw and you're already preaching the game is awesome without knowing anything about the game, and another thing entirely to be skeptical, do some research, go to a gaming convention and try the game for yourself, than saying this game totally gets me it has many of the features I'm looking for in a 2012 mmorpg and becoming a fan of it. Same ideology could be said for those that hate a game, purely based on the fact they feel it threatens the game they have chosen to preach for.

I dunno about that. Us SWTOR fans were pretty rabid, before, during and even after it was patently apparent to everyone else it was Tortanic-licious.
Felt this was very fitting especially for this forum.. Especially his 3rd topic.. worth a watch!
Cool. Thanks for sharing this, Aerowyn. Guy makes a lot of sense. Only thing I would stress was the more GOOD games there are the better off everyone is. And I know good is subjective, but considering the number of MMos that have launched the past few years only to nose dive directly into the ground, I don't think it is unrealistic to say there were a few stinkers that should have been kept off the menu.
Anyway I know most of your are busy counting the seconds until you can log in to GW2. All I have to say is I seriously hope that GW2 FAILS . . . . . . to dissapoint. While I like giving some of you here shit, its due to bad behavior in this commuinty that was rather eloquently outlined in this video, not because I bear any malice to the game.
Anyway good luck guys, hope the game is everything you hope it to be. I won't be joining you since I am still horribly burned out on the fantasy genre so don't feel I'd give the game a fair go no matter how good the games features are. Kind of like the hilarious reaction of my friend (who mind you, is a massive Tolkein fan), upon hearing that Peter Jackson was extending The Hobbit into three feature length films: "I'm so sick of Dildo Daggins and his pointy-eared fuck-buddies I could vomit."
Might take a look at the game closer to the holidays, that is providing the majority of you aren't back here by then saying "Well THAT was a complete waste of time."
Have fun storming the castle!

You know when this would of been useful? Months ago when this was a problem. Now noone cares and this video will get lost in the masses and the next game to hit GW2 notoriety will again fall victim to the same onslaught... Oh well, can't change it now.

Like they can "require" anyone to watch it. It's like having to read the disclaimer and all the rules, noone reads that, they skip to the bottom so they can click accept and move on. Besides... they would just complain that the movie has no substance, lacks taste, and was void of any point. "Did you watch it?" No... but I read a review somewhere that stated those facts. makes it true right?

You can't let the community get to you that way man. I've been rather outspoken about how I feel about this community. I make no qualms about it. Not going to let them ruin the experience for me though. Not like everyone is a bad apple here anyways or "part of the problem". Anyways, to each their own. Not like the game is going anywhere. I can certainly sympthize with the fantasy genre burnout factor. Been kind of feeling that myself as of late heh so can't say I blame you there either.
Have to agree with your friend too. Three films out of that? Really? Seems to me it will be drawn out more than his usual knack for doing so. Love his vision but christ almighty does he draw things out at times.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

was directed at people in this forum so I posted it here.. that's why its here.. you guys can make a new thread with the video in the general forum if you want though.. always good to pass this stuff around
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
You know when this would of been useful? Months ago when this was a problem. Now noone cares and this video will get lost in the masses and the next game to hit GW2 notoriety will again fall victim to the same onslaught... Oh well, can't change it now.
maybe it should be "required" watching before registering to these forums:)

Uh no,its quite useful now...
this site is FLOODED with GW2 fanboyism.
Nice vid. I subbed. It's good to hear from sane, reasonable people.
I can't take any post seriously when the writer starts throwing around any variant of the word "whine."
You do realize that will all end tomorrow. Hence why it's far too late...
why would it end tomorrow?? as long as the game is hitting their proverbial G-spot they'll continue to be here talking about it non stop in every forum.
Then they aren't fan boys because they aren't enjoying their long awaited game, they are phonies. And I hate phonies.

they'll still post regardless..
the "real fans are actually playing the game" arguement just isnt true.
