I know I have posted this is another thread but I feel I need to post this here, I have noticed that people have been posting (not a whole lot) but the screens I've seen from WoW are old and outdated here are some current content armor sets and current content model of a monkey which all of the NPCs are just as good looking in the newest expansion Mists of Pandaria. WoW ages extremely well imo.
Here I am actually showing humans and not taurens or orcs like some people like to put because of their noticable bigger shoulders to try and make the game look bad
Originally posted by evilized stylized will hold up much better over time. SOE tried to make EQ 2 realistic and look how that turned out. the game looks like garbage 9 years later.
I seriously don't understand why I keep seeing this everywhere. This is completely untrue.
Look at EVE online - photorealistic aesthetic and it still looks fantastic. There is no reason to have to make a silly childish looking game and claim that it "ages better".
yeah, and eve doesn't have to render any complex organic shapes like you would have to in EQ so they can get away with cranking up the resolution on texture maps. the player character in the cockpit isn't actually rendered in the world, it is just a small data file with your character's facial features saved to it, pre-rendered.
To me, when I'm talking about something "aging", it means "leaving it alone and seeing how it does by itself through the passage of time".
If any changes are made to it along the way, it spoils the "experiment".
We could also consider talking about the maintainability of a graphics engine. Or scalability. Machines are far more powerful today then 10 years ago. Should the same graphics engine have the capability to "dial up" to make use of the new capabilities? Should it be able to continue to do so in 10 more years?
A lot of it also hinges on the server implementation: will there be instances of areas to cap active players to prevent too many toons at once? I guess that's part of the scalability aspect.
I prefer things to look realistic. I continue to raise my own personal bar on what looks realistic. I used to like some of the old Commodore 64 games back in the day and couldn't believe how smooth and realistic the run animation for Impossible Mission was. The bar has been raised several times since then. Today's great graphics will looks lame in 20 years if I continue to raise the bar.

Art is subjective.
I definitely agree. I think one thing to consider though is that actual graphical improvements won't be nearly as significant in 10 years as they were from back then until now.
I really think we're starting to hit diminishing returns in graphical advancements and development - and it shows seeing as how games take 5+ years to be developed now. 10/20 years ago, that would have been ludicrous.
Originally posted by Trudge34 WoW's graphics were the main reason I did not try the game until a few of my friends were talking about it around me and I thought I'd try to join them. Made it to level 2 on my demo and quit.
Wow graphics were main reason I tried all before, including GW1, ... disappointed a lot tried wow ... and was immediately love. Gameplay, great cartoony look .... never looked back. The worst for my eyes are games that try to be realistic and end up being grotesque. Here I see as or/or. Or good cartoony look or VERY good realistic look.
I would love a realistic approach to the art style. Rift tried doing this, but it ended up looking so bland and turned me off. EQ2 was more realisitic also, but the models looked too plastic. If they could do a realistic style, i just hope they find a balance.
I'm tired of the WoW generation ruining other products. NO MORE CHILDISH GRAPHICS!
SWG 2.0 graphics please, or just improve upon EQ1's original models. I'm sick and tired of feeling like i'm playing a game meant for my 14yr old nephew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The EQ generation, which is the one primarily going to play this product, is more than 20years old now. At least somewhat near realistic please. I'm not looking for Final Fantasy 15 graphics here.

They did improve EQ1's original models, and this is what they look like. Sorry to burst your bubble, but EQ1 always looked cartoony.
