If you actually BOUGHT the game and then go back you have 'preferred status' where you have a better F2P experience. This includes 4 quick slot bars - which is plenty to play the game with. I don't even fill up 4 quick slot bars and I'm a subscriber.
You also get more character slots and a few other QoL things.
It has generally been my experience that you get what you pay for. If you aren't willing to pay anything - well there you go.

which is about as contradictory as it gets, unless they are in some way financially inputting something into the game then their influence on the industry is ... zero. Is it not true instead that industry has in fact got them by the balls, because the only ones complaining are the ones who aren't paying.

SWTOR has one of the weakest FTP models in the business.
it is an insult to the f2p genre to even call swtor a f2p game !
it is at it's best a glorified free trial, with a ton of content locked behind a pay wall and even what is free is so severely limited it makes me sad people put up with it just because they like the "star wars" theme.
I love star wars, I pre-ordered swtor and all that but I would never put up with what they were doing when it was a p2p game and I would never put up with the shit they keep pulling with the freemium version of the game.
it should be officially called freemium so people know it is NOT a f2p game at all !
According to some on this website I must be insane since I do not think the F2P is too restricted.
What I think, however, is that a large portion of the MMORPG community consists of spoiled brats who would be better of playing board games and learn how to deal with loss. Previously you had to pay a monthly subscription to play the game entirely. Now, yo can play through EVERY STORY ARCH FOR FREE, the main purpose of the game. You don't need to buy anything to enjoy what the game is about - the story (granted, some stories are better than others).
Of course they are going to restrict some things. Without any income they can't keep the game running. I agree, there are better models out there, even models that could prove more financial beneficial for BioWare. But it does not change anything! You can still play the majority of the game. Tired of having only 1 action bar? Then buy a god damned action bar! You've still saved more money than what subscribers paid during its subscription model days. Now you can play the game with enough action bars! You don't need purple gear to win this game. Leveling, even in f2p is insanely easy, and I've countless times wished for a 'turn off exp' funtion so I wouldn't out-level the next planet before I could play on it!
Feeling too restricted regarding PvP and Raid? Well, several others actually pay a subscription. Do you not consider it fair that those who actually keep the game alive are allowed to participate in something that those who pay nothing can't join?
There is no such thing as 'too restricted' when it comes to F2P. There are only different F2P models, some better than others, but goddammit if you don't pay anything don't come and cry my ears full of how unfair it is that you can't kill other players more than 5 times a week.
SWTOR has loads of problems. The F2P model is not one of them
Former subscribers get more than free players, even though they don't deserve more.
This is utter bullshit. For us who pre-ordered the game, who trusted the company even before seeing the finished product, and who also paid a subscriptions for months before the game went F2P, SW:TOR is not F2P, it's B2P. So OF COURSE we deserve more than freeloaders.
GW2 is also B2P, but at least they don't try to sell you essential UI elements in their shop.
Everybody has his own limits, I never minded giving $20+ to ANet every month to buy fluff and other stuff in their cash shop, but a company trying to sell me UI elements when I already bought the damned game digital deluxe edition and paid many months of subscription won't get a single more cent from me.
Amen!

"Fear & Desire are weapons in my life's pursuit" @KrewellaJahan
Because it isn't a trial! You can LITERALLY play through the ENTIRE game! They don't stop you at level 25, nor any other level. They don't stop you after a weekends play or any other set time limit. You can play through every story and class to max level!
Free to play means you can play the game without spending money. You CAN play the game. In fact, you can play 8 different stories for NOTHING! Now, if the game is supposed to survive this F2P transition then it has to make money somehow. So they restrict your access to some NON-VITAL parts of the game. You can still enjoy the story, the MAIN POINT of THIS game, without spending anything. If you consider this to be a trial then you will be sorely disappointed through the rest of your life. A trial is where you are allowed access to a limited part of the game for, sometimes, a limited amount of time. When the time is up, or when you have reached the maximum allowed level, YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY TO CONTINUE PLAYING. That is a trial.
What isn't fair about this game, SWTOR, is that they even charge those who bought the damn box set, the game, for using UI elements (A point already made by other users in this thread).
Again, the F2P model isn't the best out there. But if anyone thinks it is too restricted then they deserve to be scolded by someone who understands that YOU DON'T GET ANY BLOODY THING FOR FREE!
You might as well learn it now: Nothing in this world is free!

Your probably wasting your time, because to them it doesnt matter that you can play through each and every story arch without paying a penny, nor that you only have to spend about $5 to remove a few of the restrictions, what matters to them, is that they are not getting the same things that P2P players are getting, reading between the lines of the arguments the 'F2P' is too restricting, players here, it seems as though F2P actually means they want somebody else to pay for the game they are playing. Fairness doesn't come into it, this is more about selfishness.
The two things I especially dont like about the F2P model, restrictions on participating in group content, and restrictions on the UI.
I'm a strong believer in letting f2p access all group content, because then the f2p player becomes content for the p2p player, to help keep them interested and playing with people, and the F2P player then sees the cool stuff the p2p has, and might consider buying some.
Also I dont believe in limiting the basic usability of your game for F2P.

Former players get cash shop currency and more unlocks, all without paying any additional money. It's not BS, it's true. Former players do get more stuff, and they get it without spending additional money.
You have yet to explain the connection between previously buying something, receiving that something, and then deserving more of that something without spending any additional money. Nobody else has either. There was no expectation when you stopped playing and stopped paying money that you would, at some future date, receive additional stuff without spending any additional money, so why is there that expectation now?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
There is at least one restriction I can think of that they should add. The purely free (non-preferred) players should have their chat channel access reduced from one message per minute to no access at all. That way if they want to complain about anything in game, they have to pull out their wallets and make at least a token contribution first.

There is a big difference, those players who bought the game before and subbed actually supported the game in a monetary form. F2P who are complaining are people who does not want to spend a dime on the game. So, why should a player who has no interest in paying anything for the game get the same privileges as someone who actually spent money on it? And you are also forgetting that you can get preferred status by spending only $4.99.
That is simply not true. Former players do not get cash shop currency and more unlocks. I bought the game at release, subbed until F2P transition and a few months beyond that. When my subscription ran out i received nothing until i resubscribed. Your theory that former players get all these extra things simply because they are former players is not true.

I think where the confusion over cartel coins comes in, is when the game initially went F2P, previous players were given an amount of Cartel Coins based on how long they had been subscribed for, and automatic preferred status. Those that then continued to subscribe, were given 500 cartel coins every month, with an additional 100 cartel coins every month if they also had an authenticator.
A free to play model is not meant to give everything away for free.
A free to play player is expected - but not required - to spend money.
A GOOD free to play model enables and encourages purchases.
Does SWTOR have a good free to play model? That's a matter of opinion.
Personally, I don't believe so. I base this on the fact that I was a former subscriber: Coming back to the game now would require me to purchase features I already had, rather than purchase new features that will build upon my previous experiences.
Were I a brand new player, with no prior subscription, I don't know how I would gauge the model. In fact, I've never played a F2P game without being a previous subscriber, or having a lifetime membership. (Those generally have some basic perks built in). So I have no good response. My best guess: I'd prefer to buy items which enhance my experience, not unlock basic interface items or remove restrictions.
Not all free players are "freeloaders". They just prefer to spend money on cosmetics, new mounts, vehicles or zones, rather than toolbars. The basic "voice" I hear in complaints about SWTOR's model isn't that it's "too restrictive", but rather "it's restricting the wrong things".
I had to login on here for the first time in years to quote this and add my voice. I was also a subscriber, I bought the box on release (actually I pre-ordered), paid the sub for a while. I went back to see how it is now and I wanted to cry, even preferred status is a piss take for us previous subscribers, I bought a hide head slot unlock for my whole account and for some reason it didn't apply...even bought a stupid security token back in the day, there was nowhere for me to complain, nowhere, I sat with my mouth open in dismay for about 20 mins then I logged out and uninstalled, to restrict customer service the way that they have is a disgrace and an outright insult to people that supported the game through beta and launch, I don't have a problem paying to unlock certain things, but to restrict support like this is insane.
I'm also a previous subscriber to RIFT (beta, pre order launch etc, same thing), but you know what? When I log into RIFT now I actually feel appreciated, I feel like a veteran, I wish I felt the same in TOR.
