In LotRO, you're forced through linear zones filled with invisible walls, forced to take part in quests in order to progress through most areas. Sometimes you're even instant killed without explanation if you don't have the right quest. You find caves you can't enter... it's miserable.

I hope the LotR license passes to someone else, soon.

Sheesh, exaggerate much? You make it sound like invisible walls are everywhere--they're not, by a long shot.  The game is almost entirely open for exploration, you've got tons of gameplay options including skirmishes and mounted combat, and many consider the quests a feature, though they are definitely not the only way to progress.

Yeah, it's not a sandbox though.

    "Caves you can't enter"!?

    Seriously?

Considering that it will most likely be going up against Eve Online next round, I'd say there's plenty of doubt.

Sometimes people may vote against wow just because they don't want to see it win.  Sadly there are people out there who think this way.

LotRO is a very popular game and generaly well liked, I see it as a far more threatening rival than EVE.

A prediction might not be hard....

    GW2 vs ESO

    WoW vs EVE

quite obvious who is going to win....   It will be a WoW thing

but the other finalist can go both ways ESO vs GW2, no clue who is going to win that

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

There are more people on this website that dislike WoW than there are that support it I would say.

Some people on this site just see RED when they see the words "Guild Wars" on this site.  That's partially probably how DDO knocked out Guild Wars.  Add a "2" next to it and they go ape shit.  I know there are a lot of people who hate GW2 with every fiber of their being.  A lot of them just because a known GW2 fan slighted their game once on these forums.  A lot of these are the same guys that comment on everything to include financial reports, UI, grouping, skills, roles, ect.  Heck they would probably have something negative to say about the color of red used on the desktop shortcut icon to launch the game (assuming they have ever actually owned a copy or not).

Even though I prefer GW2, well I actually like it as much as PS2, over this current list of games I still have a feeling it will lose an overall popularity contest.

  • My votes go to ESO, GW2, WOW (dont hurt me), and D&DO.

All of those games i mentioned have been played and loved by me in the past; and there is one at the moment i am playing.

Having played both (quit GW2 a year or more ago) I agree with your last statement but as noted this is basically a popularity contest like the top voted games on the front page of this site which GW2 seems to have, on average, had a slight edge over TSW in for a while now.

More interesting is that LOTRO is currently beating World of Warcraft.

  • OriousOrious Member UncommonPosts: 548

When I first played LOTRO it was in beta... it was the first MMO where birds flew away from me and fluttered around into trees. Then the next thing I notice is there's like 10 people standing around playing instruments having a grand time. It reminded me of SWG. The group events were great too as were the interesting classes. LOTRO is a great game (played it for a small stent because of school then went back when it was F2P for a bit). I really think it should beat WoW in terms of community engagement and immersion, but time will tell.

ESO is what I'm playing now, but I think DDO had the most interesting group play and customization of the bunch except for EVE. You can't really "outcustomize" EVE lol. I'd be okay if ESO, TSW, LOTRO, or EVE fight with each other. All four games are very different from each other in terms of design strategy and both do what they seek to do very well.

I'm rooting for ESO all the way though. If ESO would be out as long as any of the veterans and continue at their current rate it would have WAY more interesting features than any of them. Justice system coming, revamped champion system, they'll have spellcrafting and imperial city out all within a year or two I'd say. What else do they have in store? No idea. Player housing probably.

Don't even go there, it will lead into a long and pointless derail of the original thread - been there, done that :) it was discussed and chewed to the bone numerous times.

Seems there was once a careless death at Rammas Deluon which left a huge mark in him...

    - without explanation yep, only everyone is talking about the line of statues which became active and deadly since Mordirith reinstated Carn Dûm's power. Also instant killed, except there's a huge dread when you go near the line, then a huge shadow damage starts to tick on you, and if you still continue then yeah, where you see the bones of the former reckless ones, you'll die. (not to mention the whole Book VI is about how to break the wall's evil and getting through it in one piece)

Imagine Aragorn at the Black Gate: "wtf? seriously, I can't go further without a proper quest, I want to explore the stuff behind this gate too" :)

DnD vs Gw1 should have been better..

As an exGW2 player (because game went downhill in last 2 years like no MMO I've seen before) and TSW player - it hurts so bad to see GW2 is gaining.

I wish GW2 best - I really do. That's why I think it needs some serious beeting (or at least game devs need) to force them to actually start working. Bah, I'm going back to TSW, why do I even care?!

For some people it doesn't matter what the other game is. If WoW is up there, they're going to vote against it.

Seeing that the most probable final between "newbies" is Guild Wars 2 vs ESO shows the sad, sad state in which the mmo industry currently is. It's just depressing to see that so mediocre games are what we have to settle for.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

Yeah? Well your opinion sucks to pal.

yeah im going to agree that WoW has just been sabotaged early.

ive played Lotr briefly and it was pretty ...."dinky" lol like stiff characters, lackluster environments.

i would be interested to know if MMORPG's subscribers had a recent dramatic rise. or if this an organised response (which would be awesome btw :P)

although... after reading a few comments here, if the difference between the 2 is about popularity then i would agree with this poll mainly because the WoW community is horrendous.
if the community in Lotr are as decent as ESO players then thumbs up.

Lets see what happens! See you at Tamriel!

Yep, what this guy said. This game was already pretty good to begin with, people just didn't give it a chance. WoW was in a worse state at launch, but it seems most people don't remember. ESO has improved a lot and every day I look at the subreddit and other forums, people are regretting ever leaving. It has a ton of content still on the way too!

Eve better than WoW ; LOTRO Way better than WoW;  GW2 didn't live up to my expectations and alot of others I know surprised GW not even mentioned the others pretty much where I guessed they would be. But If it comes down to LOTRO against any other my opinion LOTRO gonna walk away with it.

At least DDO is losing to EVE so some faith is restored in all of you.

Based on reviews and hater yes, it is the worst game of 2014. Many others would disagree, myself included. It has come a long way and there are tons of people wishing they had never quit the game to begin with.

I hope EVE wins the Veteran MMO though. I didn't play it much myself, but it seemed like a great game and it has a lot of fans.

I love the comments about it being a "popularity contest" as if there was some way it couldn't have been.

    I mean... think about it, people are going to vote for the game they like more, regardless of why. It wouldn't exactly make much sense for someone to say;

"While I really enjoy WoW, and I don't like GW2. I do feel GW2 is the better game. So I will vote for that game instead of the one I actually like."

    derp...

If you want a "best MMORPG" list that goes by something other than popularity, you can already use sales numbers, subscriptions, metacritic scores, raptr numbers, umm... just make your own list based on your opinion. lol

Some day MMORPG.com might have an advanced AI Supercomputer that can some how objectively calculate which MMORPG is superior without any subjective opinion. But not yet!

If the amount of people that dislike wow gain more votes than those who like it, I think that's saying something regardless.

Still I had way more fun in LOTRO as have many people.

Easy, I played both and in comparison GW characters are pretty much all cookie cutter vs What you can make in DDO/ IN DDO your choices do matter and your characters become more yours due to the shear depth of choices, I love my werewolf assassin in DDO (ie Rogue Druid)

Unfortunately DDO is a old game and with Turbine putting most of the effort to LoTRO, and the D&D current developers trying to push the rather lifeless (IMHO) 4th addiction rules I doubt DDO will go much further then it already has

I also played both and while I play neither these days I played LOTRO far longer and felt it had more depth especially with the dumbing down and removal of choice that came around Pandra's release, thus I voted LoTHRO. All to their own
