f2p can be done well. TERA, SMITE, and even Hearthstone are games that I'm currently playing that do it pretty well. Hearthstone is the worst offender but it's still enjoyable for sure without paying. I have also payed money in all 3 of them.
The main thing is you want the game to be completely accessible and enjoyable for a free player. Paying should just enhance that experience.
When you gate content or require paying to advance realistically, it stops being fun, and it will drive people away. These 3 games I'm playing are doing fine, and there's even more examples of games that do it well.
I read an article about some economist saying that Leage of Legends wasn't monetizing properly because they have so many users but they're not fleecing them. The guy clearly didn't stop to realize that maybe the REASON they have so many users is because they're not getting fleeced.
f2p models remind me of the first Wall Street movie. Half the makers are Gordon Gekkos, just wanting to tear everything down and sell off the parts, not caring about longevity or the enjoyment of the people involved.
added gif someone replied with in another thread, thought it was funny
personally I don't get people defending this, luckily I don't have to deal with this kind of stuff in FFXIV
We're not defending it. We're trying to illustrate why F2P games are friggin stupid and by design there to fleece people.
But hey, keep living on that mythical planet where you THINK shit is actually free.
wasn't defending F2P, silly pancake, kind of the opposite
Apologies, i noticed the FFXIV thing this time around. Sorry im just so used to all the f2p guys on here constantly spouting their BS so i kind of reacted lol.
Trion also has a hand of this.... They are selling their soul and brand name for a few dollars / euro's.
Gues 2015 is the year of the cash shop. Your subscription aint worth it anymore.
As hard as it is to side with Sony, gotta say Trion is WAY worse.
Sony just attempts to wrangle their consumers and gives them a chance to struggle and usually wins with blind faboy bias idiotic consumers where Trion gags and binds their consumers, kicks them in the teeth and tells them to suck it up. Trion is certainly the greater of the two evils in this case.
Looking at posts from respondants in this thread, I think the majority seem to dislike F2P models. A few years ago I believe this was different. Are we seeing a slow shift in favor in other models than F2P? After all when customers don't like F2P, the market should, in the end, provide what the customer wants.

"WTF, look give me that 3 dollar hamburger for free. I refuse to pay 3 dollars for a hamburger. Its only 3 dollars, you won't even notice it gone. Dude, mc donalds sucks. I'm going to your manager and complaining."
"Whats going on? All I wanted was a cheap laptop, at best buy they go for 50-75 dollars for a cheap one. But the same one at walmart is 100 dollars. And it says its 25% off. Wal mart is secretly adjusting the prices to get more money and promote their store. I'm going to go complain on the internet!"
MMO pay to player
*walks into wal mart*
"Sweet looking laptop, only 100 dollars. Great deal!"
sees 100 dollar laptop and notices its the same one from best buy and they had it for 75 dollars......so he price matches and leaves with the same laptop for the same price
Then Free to player #3 finds out the power cord was not included so he has to pay 10 dollars for one. The operating system also is linux to save money, if you want windows please pay 89.00 at walmart.com/cashshop. Ethernet card is also 20 dollars extra too. CD rom is 25 dollars also.
Free to player #3 thinks to himself I should have just paid the extra 25 dollars to have it included.
Cashshops are trash and only those that don't want an mmorpg or want unfair advantages rather play then than paying 15 a month for a equal footing mmo. I never liked the idea of cashshops and will only stomach ones that only do cosmetic items that give no advantages whatsoever.
Originally posted by Iceman8235 OP, have you ever played planetside 2? If you have you'd know it has one of the most generous f2p models of any f2p game out there. They have a thin line to tread with a game like planetside because the gameplay relies 100% on player population, there are zero pve mobs in the game. Their only mistake here was making it a little too generous to begin with, because with this new generation of entitlement it's very easy to give players things, but very difficult to take them away, even if it makes sense to. It looks like you're just trying to hop on the burn the cash shop wagon that's been making the rounds lately, but you have no real argument and in this case they made the right decision.
I played not only Planetside 2 but planetside 1 as well and PS2 is a steaming turd casualized to market to those whom would buy from the cashshop all the overpowered items like mods and monthly overpowered weapon added on there(And we all know it was OP with intent so people buy it). The only thing done right in that game is the fps combat, graphics and the amount of players. Everything else in PS1 is way better, period. Hence why the game is dying and hardly any Ps1 veterans play that shtstain of a game. After 2 years they still haven't fixed a dam thing wrong with the game and put all their focus on cashshops. Flying battleships, yeah right.
I really hope they don't screw over their playerbase with H1Z1 but it is $OE and they love to rape their customers whenever they can.
