Its sad how much I love MMO's yet there isnt one on the market I currently want to play

sludgebeardsludgebeard Member RarePosts: 788

Its sad I know, and yes I know: Its Me.

Im not denying that I have been spoiled by the greats, PRE-CU SWG, Vanilla WoW, City of Heroes, hell even original Age of Conan was different enough.

Now there's nothing for me, the only MMO's I haven played that are on the top list are Secret World (Never like the look of the combat) and FFXIV (saw a friend play the starting quests and just seemed to boring and slow).

But I love MMO's! I just want a game where I can jump in as a Dwarf, go find a mine, and start mining, or maybe just join a group and fight so mobs.

Im a simple man, but all the MMO's right now are just solo grind fests, or they just dont have enough depth for me.

Is there any hope for a guy like me MMORPG? Anyone else out there in the "No-MMO's Club"?

There's over 100 MMOs. Hundreds of them if you are looking beyond 'MMORPG' in your definition of MMO.

Are you sure it's not just that you like the idea of MMOs? More specificially, that you like the thought of a particular non-existent idealized MMO?

Because, honestly, if you like MMOs and out of all the MMOs in existence, new and old, there isn't one on the market that you currently want to play, then either you really don't like MMOs or you're just doing it wrong.

Whatever the case, I look forward to your next thread (every three weeks is it?) on this very same topic.Cheers! o/

:) Hey, Its every 2-3 weeks actually.

And if what your saying is that im doing something wrong because there isnt a CURRENTLY AVAILABLE MMO I want to play, I think you need to re-evaluate what your own personal definition of MMO is.

What im saying is that all the good MMO's are dead, or shell's of their former selves.

The first MMO I ever played was Survival Project. I miss it so much...

Every MMO I ever thought was good has been closed. SP, WonderKing, City of Heroes, Lego Universe, the list goes on....

It seems like you are just bored with them.  Don't expect them to change drastically from what they are currently.  Try another genre, or take up some other hobbies besides gaming.  That's what i'm doing, and i'm only currently playing GW2 very casually for around an hour every day, or several weeks sometimes.  Don't get tied down to mmos, if you aren't enjoying them anymore.  Just wait for the next MMO to release and maybe you'll like it.

Welcome to the club OP. Sadly, my 14+ year of MMORPG experience does still help me to barely find some joy in the cheaply done, repetitive, F2P casual theme parks on rails, but yea it's why the last new MMORPG that has took my $ was DCUO 4 and a half years ago.

God knows how many years will it pass before I can finally spend my $ on a MMORPG that I can see pushing the genre forwards and not backwards.

  • Not sure how you feel about EQ, but a new progression server just opened up recently. It's a required sub but totally worth that mmorpg feeling that I know your looking for because I'm in the same boat.

So which is it over 100, which might be arguable depending on how you define MMO, or "hundreds of them" which clearly is not the case no matter how you define MMO?

If you are talking about MMORPGs (and I think the OP was) then that number gets even smaller. Start applying some rather simple taste criteria and the list gets very short indeed. For me the list has got down to Project 1999, that is one item.  For the OP the list has dropped to zero.

The OP and I are not alone in this, there are a number of us still on this forum and I believe many more out there.  Add this to the number of people who are just hanging in there on the last game on their list and you have a significant audience that is not being catered for.

Now maybe Pantheon will be delivered, or some other project and we will be satisfied for another year or more, but the future does not look bright.

    I see the opposite.

    • TSW
    • GW2
    • ESO
    • EQN/Landmark
    • WS
    • Archeage
    • Firefall
    • The Repopulation
    • SotA (combat system)
    • etc.
Some of these are action-combat, themepark, as well as having some sandbox features (upcoming mmos also).  Some of these might not have innovated the genre as you had hoped, but there's no denying they have made some improvements to the genre.

There's hardly any MMOs, currently, that are on-rails these days.  There are multiple paths to max level.  What innovation would you like to see?

I believe F2P is diluting the creative behind good MMORPG design. Everyone is seeminly out to make a quick buck and we have all these fly-by-night games being released left and right. The list you defined is pretty much the same game reskinned multiple times. Why is every game that comes out now on rails? Why are there always only 3-4 different classes being offered? Why do they all focus on a solo-driven experience with multiplayer elements sprinkled in?

I think all the OP is trying to say is....Why don't developers make any games like the old generation of MMOs? Yes current games are good in their own way but they don't cater at all to people who have been playing games in the genre for a decade or more.

You can't be serious. Same game reskinned multiple times? On what planet is TSW, ESO, Landmark, and Wild Star exactly the same? Oh, sorry, they have skill trees, they have crafting, they have levels, they have combat, they must be identical clones of WoW.

i think you need to get out of your emo phase and look beyond the "solo" nature of games. because you know what i can play a dwarf and mine in WoW as well as play in a group. im sorry that games now a days are catering to the solo casual player that wants to get something done in a game.

get over yourself and get over the idea that your playstyle should be the only playstyle. I have taken a character in WoW and have done very little questing and leveled to 64 ... just from dungeons. oh but wait let me guess "oh i hate instance dungeons they are the death of immersion in MMORPGs .. i remember back in EQ when you had to spam 32 wizard LFG over and over and over ... those were good times"

i remember those days too and they werent as glorious as those on this forum make it out to be.

Indeed our play style should not be the only play style, however it is a play style and one that is being catered for less and less as time goes on.  Perhaps you should stop being pejorative and start thinking about diversity.

    It's just... just.

What can you say. The games are sold in pieces. Microtransactions are rampant. They act like we are bucket heads that really believe free means free - give me an ounce of credit. There is no sense of community. No reason to need anyone and in turn no reason to be needed. You can't trust any company that has been around long enough to have lied. The up and coming ones could be big ol' future liars too. The games don't just want money when they are done. Now they want you to fund it and participate in the process. Maybe I don't want to participate today. Maybe I want to let you make a game I can consume instead of me feeling some sort of responsibility about it. Maybe I don't need a second job right now where I pay you to "maybe" get my input heard. How about you blow my mind and I'll get the broom to pick up the debris afterward.

I'm just going to bed. I'd rather not think about it right now. It makes me chain smoke :

    What he said ^^.

Has not been an MMO worth playing past the first month released in several years.

because logging in and not being able to do anything and having to log off because groups aren't looking for your particular class or whatever SUCKS. people don't have time for that crap anymore, they want to log in play the game and get something accomplished.

I played EQ1 i remember the days of sitting around spamming LFG LFG LFG LFG LFG for hours and not finding one single group. so i wasn't able to do anything else besides LFG spam because i rolled a class that couldn't solo. the same thing in DAOC i remember spending hours Looking for Tree groups and if no groups were available well my day was pretty much dead in the water.

So why don't developers make any games like the old generation of MMOs. because besides you and maybe 50 people that dwell here on the MMORPG.com forum or should i say the "oh god another MMO that sucks i haven't played it but i know it sucks because its not EQ1 or UO so it sucks" forums would play it. the old generation of MMOs are overglorified on this forum ... they were awful they had terrible mechanics and were just plain boring compared to newer MMORPGs.

and again before you bring it up i did play EQ1 i got to max level in EQ1 i have probably done more in EQ1 than you can ever imagine. same thing with DAOC or SWG or hell any old school MMORPG that you can name.

Just another case of nostalgia colouring your expectations, memories and enjoyments.

I played MMOs since UO...AC, DAOC, AO and a whole slew of others i can't remember. Yet tbh I still find todays MMOs awesome...and actually catering to a lot of tastes. My only problem is well, i'm not young anymore and don't have much time to really delve into them. So I cant really connect to them like I once did with older titles. Thats not the game's problem.

The problem is, u just want more of the same really...and unable to appreciate the strengths of newer games. Its like how some old folks feel that the music in their generation is the best yet I can enjoy listening to both oldies and classics and whatever thats popular now on youtube with equal enjoyment.

    Honestly, wrong.

What you meant to say was, "I remember logging in and not being able to find a group, so I fought mobs I could solo.  It wasn't nearly as efficient as grouping, so I didn't level as fast as I could've with a group."

The only difference, in this area, between older MMORPGs and newer MMORPGs is that they (newer MMORPGs) have been built around making solo play the most efficient method of advancement (at least until endgame).  Even new MMORPGs generally force you into a group environment at endgame to advance, however.

It's funny how folks like to claim "rose-colored glasses," then spout nonsense of their own about older MMORPGs on the opposite side of the spectrum.  Unless you were playing the few classes that, literally, were built for groups (and therefore, always welcome in said groups), you could solo just fine in older MMORPGs.  I mean, unless you were sorely handicapped in terms of skill.  Then, I guess you have a point, of sorts.  But I'd say it reflects more on your own abilities than the features contained in any MMORPG (if that were the case).

Our company made Planetarion back in 2001. That was a sci-fi WMMO peaking at 180 000 online players which was an insane number at that time.

We have recently done a "comeback in space" with AD2460 (where you fight for resources alone and in alliances).

Unlike most of our competitors we have chosen P2P (with a free trial period) with a low subscription cost (€4/month) rather than F2P and pay to win. The reason for choosing such business model is that we do not belive that F2P / pay-to-win is the future for the gaming business.

I feel similar to the OP. You know what helped me? Switching the genre. There are some awesome games out there that can bring you the joy of computergaming. Pillars of Eternity for example is a fantastic game that can give me a good fix. It is a bit like a substitute drug for mmoers. :-)

I think we have to wait for a new generation of MMOs. I know it is a long time now, but the market will generate another good oldschool MMO for us oldies, we just have to wait.

The problem right now is that there are some studios producing oldschool games but they will never release or they are poorly made and have bad quality.

I think daybreak will be the guys who are bringing the next big thing when they realize they have all the tools for it. They still have the old fans, the technology and the money to do it, they just need to fail with their current EQ-Next/Landmark crap to realize what they are meant to do: A real hardcore EQ successor.

    I'm 100% with you OP :)

Of the list of hundreds, there ether not mmos or they sold out to F2P, leaving us with nothing.

Its not a matter of being burned out it's a matter of crap, money grabs, or changes to make the games solo. Most of the mmo players on this site are gone, or gave up and just play them for lobby games.....I'm playing GW2 for entertainment until the Witcher3 comes out.

There's no money or rather enough money for the type of game you desire. Meaning investors do not want to make those games anymore. Those that do are not well represented and probably will fail. Those games will end up not making enough money either way it is the end.

    Ah, yes.  The "clone" argument.

This is always the fallback argument, even though there are many MMOs that are not clones.  I've already provided a short list that are not direct clones of [insert MMO scapegoat].  EvE is also another.  Let's not forget Wurm Online either... or the dozens of others such as Age of Wushu, World of Tanks, or Swordsman Online.  The list goes on.

Plenty of MMOs are out there, you just have to expand your search beyond medieval fantasy and western mmos.

    Here's a list that will help:  http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/all/sCol/titleUC/sOrder/asc
