What makes a "Great MMO"? Well, in our voting we took into account both the technical and community achievements of each title, but also its wider effect on the MMO genre as a whole. In short, this list isn't just about what we think is "The Best", but also about what we think has had the most significant impact on culture and gaming as a whole.

My top 5 guess is...WoW, 2x Guild Wars, SWG, Aion

edit: Hmm forgot EQ, I guess it'll replace Aion.

    I expected 5: DAoC, 4: EvE, 3: SWG, 2: EQ, 1: WoW

Guess: 5. SW:ToR 4. GW2 3. SWG 2. EQ1 1. WoW SW:ToR I'm not sure of, but I'm not sure what else to put in its place. The other four are probably virtual locks to make the top five, and I think WoW and EQ1 are locks to be the top two in that order.

If it hasn't come up yet, where else do you think it will be, not on the list, not likely.

Anyways, EVE was robbed..... but then again, 6th on the list isn't too shabby for a title that appeals to a small niche of players and is pretty much hated by many others.

EQ should be #1, but I expect that WoW will get it based on subscription numbers being more valuable than innovation.

Really surprised UO didn't make top 5. I guess my opinion is biased, but I think it's what all MMOs should aspire to be. It was a true open world with well done mechanics. There was no 'class' as they put it, although you could use your skill points to get a similar archetype. Also the only MMO i've played where being a thief could truly be a profession.

Damn, still no City of Heroes. I really don't think it's going to be in the top 5 since it was canceled about 3 years ago. It was my favorite game. I never expected it to be in the top 10, but it sure deserved better than the games in the bottom ten either.

Well, 2 of my top 5 have already shown up. That being LOTRO at like #16 or #17 and now DAoC at #9. All that is left for me is SWG, EQ and ESO. With only 5 spots left and a lot of MMO's to choose from, I can already see a lot of people being upset. So, 5 spots and you still have games like WoW, SWG, EQ, GW2, SWTOR and ESO? I'm too sick to see if any of those already made the previous lists.
SWTOR was number 20. Here're the two previous lists:

They did innovate. They made the genre more accessible to people other than fedora wearing basement dwellers.

Thank you Iselin as I am suffering from a terrible head cold and don't feel like doing much of anything. I wonder if my remaining guesses will be accurate than for the top 5.
Yeah head colds suck. Those are my 5 guesses as well. I think EQ and WOW are the two most likely 1 & 2. Personally I would rank them EQ, WOW, ESO, GW2, SWG but hey, Bill's number 1 didn't even make the top 5 so it's anyone's guess how the top 5 will be ordered.

GW2 is over rated, of course it will be top five.
That leaves EQ, WoW, CoH, and SWG.  If ESO bumps  any of those off the list.... Sad

EVE may have been robbed but not nearly as bad as UO.

Half the people posting probably never played some of these games, or completely biased toward some. This list is for amusement purposes and nothing else, so I would not sweat it.

Bingo. Plus it's voted on just by writers. What I'll likely do is take the 35 when we're all said and done and host another survey to have the community rank theirs and compare.

Significant impact on [geek / gaming] culture does indeed have weight on a list like this, but on a list like this, not this one, so thusly titled. And here's why. Geek culture is so powerful that it well deserves its own list, perhaps titled The Greatest Geek Culturally Significant MMORPGs of All Time. To include it merely as a 'but also' I feel weakens what it means. Also, it skews the results. Notice that Ultima Online is at #7. Because cultural impact was included in the factoring, UO (and / or arguably Meridian 59) should be at #1. Why? Because without UO, MMORPGs would not be what they are today. More so, they simply wouldn't be. UO was the catalyst for each MMORPG created after it. They have had their individual impacts because UO had its' first. So, each of their incremental impacts feed back to UO, increasing its impact exponentially. Now, if the list had left out the cultural impact, and left it solely at "technical and community achievements of each title, but also its wider effect on the MMO genre as a whole", I could see UO being at #7, or even in the top 5.

Based on games I like. 1 to 3.
GW2 very innovative, best underwater combat I've seen in a game, level to content means 100% of the game is open to max level players.

WoW also innovative when it first came out, some people may not like it but it has the most players of any MMO and has held on to that title for the longest.

Marvel Heroes great turn around. One of the few games where you can run into Devs actually playing the game and enjoying what they've created.

How in gods name did TSW make the top 15? o.O It's a good game, but severely flawed in many places. On top of that.... I don't even play EvE, and never have, but I know it should be higher lol
