The developers have clearly stated this is not an MMORPG. Why do people not read? They have stated it is an RPG but a MOG. Multiplayer Online Game.

An always-online, persistent world, third-person shooter involving multiple people lacking a linear narrative? The Division sounded like it had all the trappings of a MMO. In fact, it sounded a lot like Trion World’s Defiance if Defiance were next-gen and set in a post-apocalyptic New York. Yet, perhaps to avoid the comparisons, Ubisoft was very careful to shy away from the word.

Even when I broached the subject with Mannerfelt and Rundqvist, they were careful to avoid the “massive” part of the term. “This game, at its core, is a multiplayer online game,” said Mannerfelt. “It’s based on online and grouping. You can play with your friends and play with a lot of other people. You can, of course, play by yourself and play all the story stuff by yourself and as I said, seamlessly with your friends and seamlessly into PvP if you feel like playing PvP. In the PvP areas you will meet many, many other players.”

The only people calling it an MMORPG are people that are not the developer of the game itself.

It's almost as if some of these people are purposely trying to confuse others and start a debate based on misinformation.  I guess when there is not a lot of other things to complain about because the game is looking to be very good from what the beta showed people get desperate and start making things up.

If The Division is simply an instanced single player game that allows you to group with a few friends PVE and join an area where you can PVP other small groups, that's needs to be very clear. That sounds more like my experience with Gears of War.

Again the Developers are not calling the division an mmorpg.  They are calling it a 3rd person tactical shooter RPG with mmo elements.  And that's exactly what it is.

If a person buys a game because somebody on some random website said he thinks it's a mmorpg and that person is upset the only person they should be upset with is themselves.

Thats just it, its all about semantics.  Just because something is called one thing by the developers doesn't mean it isn't also something else.  They stated in an interview that it is a multiplayer online game.  The actula depiction of the game based off of what they are SELLING it as is... " An Open World RPG"   Thats their coined term for what the division is.

They go on to say specifics that sound an awfully lot like MMORPGs in some areas, and just regular MOGs in others.  Its easily a hybridized system,  but see, its not an MOG either, as you can play it single player.  Its not an MMORPG because you never have to visit the dark zone and see all the other players.  But its not.. not these things either.

When you hybridize a system like this, it falls under many categories.  Its listed here on MMORPG.com because...  well why do you think?  Not just because its a MOG...it connects you with many more players at a single time than what most people consider a MOG to be.

The question is... how will others classify this?  Many gaming sites consider this to be on an MMO scale... in a gaming magazine, the little colored heading that classifies this game --will it be considered a Shooter?  An RPG?  An MMO? Action-RPG? I mean there are dozens here.

    To be clear :

MMO is a game that has massive number of players sharing the same area in which they are placed just by virtue of being and arriving  there , and not because they chose specific lobby, friend, or instance.

All the rest are lobby games.

Unfortunately the definition have been slipping for years now. Every year more and more non-mmo games are branded mmo. And every year those have less and less likeness to mmo.

So no wonder a multiplayer co-op shooter is now suddenly called MMO.

Heck, next year i recon that if the game can connect two players it will be called MMO
hmm ... already happening. Some places classified Hearthstone as a MMO.

Just to be clear ... no matter what your definition of a MMO is, this place, other websites, article linked in the first post ... all classifies games WITHOUT "massive number of players sharing the same area" as MMOs.

And so you are right, the def is "slipping". But why is this "unfortunate"? I would say it is VERY fortunate for the websites which want more discussions to drive traffic. There aren't really that many MMO left, by YOUR definition.
Unfortunately, what you are referring to as 'your' definition, is really just the agreed standard, you may not like it, but it really does take hundreds of players in the same instance, able to interract with each other, that classes a game as being massively multiplayer, anything less than that and its really just another multiplayer online game, which btw, is the label that the developers of The Division have given the game, so while you may disagree with the games developers, that is unfortunately, just your opinion.
The fact is, the first MMO wasn't called such because it had a thousand players in a single instance... or hundreds in a single area.  It was called an MMO because it had substantially more players in a single persistent world than others had... and originally that number was in its 30s.

The Division isn't slated as a multiplayer online game.  Its actually being sold as an Open World RPG... but that doesn't mean it isn't qualified as a multiplayer game, or an MMO.  If The Division doesn't count as an MMO, then there are dozens of games on MMORPG.coms list that also don't qualify,  as the division qualifies quite a bit more than them.

The only definition anyone here has, is the definition they create for themselves... there is no standard for what an MMO qualifies as.
So then it really isn't a definition by this line of reasoning. I disagree, we can define the color red, we can do so here as well.

If a person is having that much trouble with what a video game is called maybe they should stop playing them.  If a person, website or magazine wants to categorize a video game different then the Devs do they don't need to call and get permission.  The Division is NOT the only non mmorpg on this site, in fact they have stated many times they will and can include non mmorpgs.  It's not their fault  some get confused.

No, they just haven't made any for years now outside of average theme parks.

Can you define the color red?  Which one? Where does Maroon stand?  Is rose red the real red?  What if you're color blind?

Of course the can an will include non MMORPGs.. but that doesn't mean they include just anything does it?

All I'm saying, is that its all based on perception.  To a person that only played the story lines and never saw the dark zone, I can see how they would conclude this is barely an MORPG.

To those like myself that spent a great deal of time in the DZ,  its more of an MMO than many MMO's I've played recently.  There is no single way to define what an MMO is..  you could ask 1000 people and get 1000 different answers.. and even if all those people were zoned into the same instance they would still say its only a Multiplayer Online Question, and doesn't qualify as an MMO.

  it doesn't matter how people classify it.  It does end up more as an opinion than a fact... there is no tru MMORPG definition.

I agree 100% they are a problem just  like bitter old school vets.  But I would disagree as there are more mmorpgs available then ever before and more people playing them...that's far from dead.

dead to you ... great for millions of players.

We are talking about games .. entertainment products here. Is there a reason NOW NOW NOW is a problem?

I certainly won't waste my time on games that are not fun in the first 15-30 mins.

How is this a mmorpg? This is a fps with instances for zones. Max players in a zone is like 40....Wish they would stop including everything as a mmorpg just to garner more money from ads and limelight.

If you are going to actively showcase games that arent mmorpg then at least make a sepereate forum and stop trying to lump everything with instances and lobbies as such.

I don't think anyone claimed it was an MMORPG.  If they did, they were clearly wrong.

It was claimed to be an MMO.  That also seems clearly wrong, if this reddit thread is to be believed (players reporting a Dark Zone player cap of 24 players.)

Having fewer-than-average players for a FPS doesn't make you a "massively multiplayer online" game.  The whole point of calling something massively multiplayer is that it has higher-than-average player counts.

We don't agree on what makes a good MMORPG but you continue to remain a voice of intelligent reason in this particular debate which seems to be drowned in a sea of wanton  ignorance.

Ok it's not an mmorpg (according to the Devs) it's not a FPS its  not a lobby game it's an open world multiplayer 3rd person tactical shooter RPG with mmo elements. ...I wish people would actually learn about a game they are going QQ about.

This is is not the first non mmorpg that this site has wrote about or included, if you have an issue with games they include maybe you should find a new site to frequent.

    Division has zero "MMO" elements.

    It has "RPG" elements.

An MMO is just about being massively multiplayer and online.

An RPG is about story, progression, and stats-driven combat.  Division has loot, which is progression.

what I am about to say is a bit off topic but I feel like it really needs to be said.

RPG is not really about story or stats-driven combat. It can be stats driven anything really not just combat its just that combat is what is most focused on because of tradition and how RPGs where born. But I will say I really really dont think one of the core corner stones of RPG is story. That is something that came out of the computer era.

anyway sorry I just wanted to say that, not trying to debate but just letting you know not everyone who played RPGs in during the birth (late 70s early 80s) would agree with that definition.

First of all,  the 24 player cap, that was just for Beta.  We don't know the max player cap for the DZ. If you read my other posts I explained this.  And yes,  it could easily be considered an MMO, especially in comparison to other games that have the MMO title here and elsewhere.

The DZ was only 1/8  or so of the total size it will be on launch.  Its also very open and very fluid, so you could potentially have 4... 5... 6 times that amount on launch in the DZ?  We just don't know.

I dont know what DZ is but as a programmer myself I very very seriously doubt they are going to throttle a 24 player cap up to any number one would consider 'massive'.

When it comes to testing a game getting that player cap as high to the planned release is pretty important because when players start to rise is when the hidden 'bugs' start to show themselves

True, but remember that the majority of MMORPGs simply give the appearance of "massive" since the number of players actually "living" in a given area at any one time is managed by instances, shards, etc. I think that even if this were ratcheted up to 30 or 40, then you'd probably be just fine. Ultimately, we're talking about a lot of action happening within a small area, so it should be interesting to see how that works out.

What number constitutes "massive"  what was the first MMO's number at.  I can tell you, during their testing cycle it was about the same numbers... then again that was back in 1996 -1997... but the point remains, that the term was coined on what is substantially less massive than what others would state are "massive" numbers today.

Point being... whats the number?  You could say its 1000... you could say its 100.  Its all relative.

And there were a lot of features they didn't test... FYI..   crafting.... most skills... a ton of their missions.  Their testing cycle for their betas was relatively small and unlike other games I've tried.....   maybe to their detriment.  We just don't know a lot going into launch in two weeks

your kind of missing the main point or trying to divert attention from it.

when in a beta testing phase one of the most important things to test at that point is a high player count. Thus if the cap is at 24 unless they are EXTREEMLY unprofessional you can expect the final player count to be very close to that number. Call it massive or not is beside the core point

and for the record Mount and Blade often handles more than 12v12...

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Please do not respond to me

Thats what I'm trying to point out.. it CAN'T be that total number.

The DZ has no loading once you're inside the DZ..  and they sectioned off a small corner of it.  A VERY small corner.  You could run into the red areas that were sectioned off.. but it said "you're going out of the beta areas"  but conceivably ... during the live game.. those areas would be open.  A 24 player count in the live game.. would mean you wouldn't see anyone in the dark zone.  Ever.  Its way too big of an area to cap 24 players.

Now they could do some type of chunking of data like vanguard did... but chances are.. they won't.  When you're chasing a player from one part of the city to the next.. its also unlikely that they'll load into a new instance upon crossing a threshold

Believe me, I understand what you're saying,  but unless you've actually seen it, its really hard to dictate how it will truly work.  The zones are very large and very fluid... it is essentially an open world once you get in there... a very large one.  24 players in that large of a zone....  it might as well be a single player instance.
