Can someone explain "death" completely?

AmarantharAmaranthar Member EpicPosts: 5,852
I have to say, I'm confused.

Note: I'm not for or against, I'm just trying to understand the mechanics.
Generally speaking, I like the concept but am leery of possible flaws. Longevity of game play with family tree history (including generational wealth), and a realism of sorts in the on-running game.

1) So you live for so many years. Then you Perma-Die. Is that a fixed thing (without modifiers from game play, i.e. at the start)?

2) Then when you get "killed" in combat (or otherwise), you have a period of time to get back to your "core life force". But it's easier/harder based on some rating, right? So based on your actions in game, you might Parma-Die easier than others.
That rating is based on both criminal actions as well as age, right?

3) So rampant PKers suffer a much lower rating and that makes it easier to Perma-Die on any death?

4) But also, a high rating of another sort, call it "Fame" (a king, for example), reduces your score and makes it easier to Perma-Die, right?
(More explanation to "Fame" please.)

5) None of this includes or has anything to do with being "knocked out", except for the affects on an attacker's rating, right?

6) Anything else?

    1) No its not a fixed time. The initial amount of Spirit you start with is slightly variable. You may start with 14 months, you may start with 12 months.

    2) I dont understand this statement and question. There is a fame rating that everyone has. This rating will impact how much Spirit you lose when you are coup de grace'd. Higher fame equals more Spirit loss. If thats what youre asking.

    3) Permadeath only happens when youre out of Spirit. Its not a random chance every time you are coup de grace'd. If someone PK's a lot, they will almost certainly gain more fame, meaning they will lose a lot more Spirit when coup de grace'd.

    4) I think I explained this earlier. If not let me know.

    5) Incapacitation does not affect Spirit in anyway.

Im not sure what youre referring to when you say "rating" as I have never seen this mentioned anywhere. Link to a reference?

Basically when you start the game your making a soul then a character. "If you don't ever die in-game and are never forced to "spirit walk" to resurrect, your character will live to be between 80 and 120 in-game years—an in-game year is approximately four real days—old. Depending on how you decide to start your adventure, you either take control of your character at 12 or 15. The average player will be given between 65 and 105 in-game years before their character dies permanently".Every time you die your spirit will drop by 2 days, If you die an average of once a month your character will live for around 11 months before you need to purchase a spark of life. The devs are talking about adding a toll cap so you can only lose so much spirit in a short period of time which I find to be a good idea because of greifers. They have also mentioned making a saperate cap once every 10 hrs for players who are often on the battlefield.

I hope this helps, also you can ask questions on their Kick starter page to get a very fast and detailed response for these questions, I have found them to be really helpful there lately.

By "rating" I was talking about the adjusted "spirit" score.

Ok, so, what is this "Spirit Walk" thing all about? And getting lost?

What is "Spirit" based on? Is it a Stat (like Strength)? How does it work, and do you lose Spirit as your character ages?

Spirit is not a stat, its not based on anything. Its not a number you ever see either. Its the games way of tracking how much life you have left.

A Spirit walk is what you do when you are coup de grace'd. Your soul is sent to the astral plane and you have to find your way to your body. Then you will come back to life. This causes you to lose Spirit, thus shortening your total life.

As you age Spirit is lost at a constant rate.

    Ok, thanks.
So, it's possible to die, and not be at the perma-death state, and lost wandering as a ghost in the astral plane?
I think I read something about the time it takes you to get back to your life force (or whatever it's called) and get back to the world, and that time (that it takes) affecting something?

Spirit walk happens when you die. When you do you spawn at a location and a "line" connects you (the player) to your corpse.  You have to run back to your corpse to revive.

As your spirit drops the line becomes dimmer and dimmer making it harder to find your way back. Once you lose all spirit energy you encounter "perma death"

If you are quick and your line is strong you can get back with min spirit loss.  Also family members in game can find your corpse, and activate a command to give that line a boost to it's visablity.

This is what is similar to the spirit world we are talking about: Link
(This is a quest walk-through, so be careful of spoilers from the secret world)

If you played EQ2 or Fable 2. The line leading you to the quest is the same thing that leads you to your corpse.

There is also a spitit line that connects your "Ghost" to your body, so that you can find yourself. that line gets harder to see as you get "older" or lose more of your spirit

Coup De Grace & Spirit Walking

The second form of "death" which we'll talk about during this article is Spirit Walking. Spirit Walking is what happens when someone takes the initiative to first incapacitate you, and then while you're unconscious, performs a coup de grace. A coup de grace is a killing stroke which results in your soul being forced out of your body in a process we call Spirit Walking. It’s also highly illegal and comes with severe punishment. In general, most beasts and NPCs will simply incapacitate you, however especially evil humans or creatures may aim to kill.

When someone performs a coup de grace you'll hear your unconscious self scream, and then your screen will transition from black to a vision of another world known as the Astral Plane. (See Figure 1.) This is the plane of existence between the mortal world and the world of the gods. When you enter the astral plane you'll see a small silver cord which goes from your soul, travelling some distance, to a highly saturated version of your mortal body that has manifested on the Astral Plane. This is your connection to the physical world.

As time passes, and your soul is separated from your body, your connection to the physical world grows weaker and weaker. If enough time passes and you cannot return to your mortal body, your body will become uninhabitable and your soul will be forced to make its way back to the Akashic Records. This is permadeath and is the subject of next week’s design journal.

Ok, so do you lose more Spirit if it takes longer to revive? (Because of that weaker Silver Cord.)

And is perma-dying of old age (without being coup de graced) a separate thing than this Spirit Walk thing?

In these questions, I'm also wondering if characters at the end of their age will have heart attacks and the like, which would put them into this Spirit Walk thing and might be how they actually perma-die (in the end).

There are 3 levels of death in CoE, Incompacitated, Coupe de Grace, and Perma-Death. You will loose No Spirit loss from being Incompacitated (Life = 0) from an animal attack or being backstabbed along the rode. Your screen will go black for a period of time and you will wake back up. Once you are in a Incompaciated state, a person can do a Coupe de Grace and seperate your soul from your body and you are forced to do a Spirt Walk, with the siver cord back to your corpse. Once you have no more spirit and you die, that would be Perma-Death (not a Spirt Walk), you much create a new character with your previous soul.

Spirit Walking is a method of a corpse run with the strength of your Spirit providing a path back by the way of the silver cord. The less Spirit you have (by accumulating more Deaths/Coup de Grace and being forced to Spirit Walk) the harder it will be to follow the silver cord back to your corpse. This Spirit Walk is not Perma-Death, Spirit Walks are only from Coupe de Grace.

Once you perma die, you have to create a new character with your old soul. You will have to relearn your skills though there will be accesserated skill ramps. So you can get back to your older skill level faster than in the previous life and progress further with the current life.

I would like to see a skill like meditation that extended your life the more you do it.  I recently saw a video of a Gung-Fu Master who they said was over 100 years old and still did demos at tournaments.  He said his long life and high energy came from meditation and breathing correctly, I think.

SWG had a meditation skill line that boosted your stats and allowed you to heal yourself after battle.  That's now rare in games but was very enjoyable.

At first I was a bit surprised to see how they used the permadeath system as an USP in their advertising, but given the success of the KS it seems this is something people actually want.

its not really permadeath though.. and alone its not something i really see myself doing. but coupled with all the other things that they plan on doing with the game its really  minor to me..

They made it seem like the shorter the time you spend in spirit form the better.  They also said when it became weak you might not be able to find your way back so the longer in spirit form the worse it is for you.  So if you not online and someone kills you and you don't login for awhile your lifespan could be shortened a lot.  How much they don't say as they haven't given out any progression ratios for aging yet.

In another post someone said it's like you're in a coma when off-line so you lose no time until you log back in.

If you're offline (or if you go offline), the timer stops until you log back in again.

I wrote a short article here on mmorpg.com that might (or might not) help with this issue.

The amount of time you spend in the astral plane has absolutely ZERO impact on Spirit loss. Zero. If you use every last second on your timer you lose the same Spirit as though you got through the Spiritwalk as quickly as possible. The time also does not run while youre offline.

This goes over Spirit loss from death. It was asked and confirmed that the amount of time you spend in the astral plane has zero impact on spirit loss. Spirit is lost when you are coup de grace'd and its a set amount based on fame and circumstance(like war).

I read or heard somewhere that yes you can but you would be John Smith the 2nd for example. Also it is linked to families so you could only be names John Smith if you were part of the Smith family.

Goboygo, this game is much different than any other MMO. There is a family structure and marrage. The offspring of the couple may be a boy, girl, twins and all will have the genetics from one parent or the other or possibly a mixture of both, no one will really know.

So PKers should kill the other players as much as they can before they themselves get killed as much?

That way they can loot more, control more (via aggression), and pass on more to their heirs for the next round. Right?
