Out of curiosity, why do all these star ships use jet engines?  What are all the air-intake manifolds on the engine nacells used for in space?

Those ships that are supposed to be able to land on planets use air intakes to get reaction mass (usually oxygen/nitrogen) ... easier and cheaper (mass balance wise) to get it from the environment instead of transporting it around in internal fuel tanks. Fuel (especially when its hydrogen) is usually much lighter than the required oxidizer.

Same with (small delta shaped) wings ... saves fuel (and therefore Delta-v) in atmospheric flight and gives you a greater cross track maneuverability. Small and delta shaped because thats better at high, supersonic speeds. In principle a correctly shaped lifting body without wings is enough, but its less efficient.

Ships that ONLY operate in orbit (usually the largest) could be shaped any way you like ... in principle. But often you want the reactor far from living quarters so you need less shielding. Or you want rotating grav decks instead of energy-costly artifical gravity. Or you want a compact, heavily plated and shielded warship design.

Even orbit-only ships could have intake manifolds if they are designed around Bussard ramjet engines.

Well, there's no doubt, these designs are quite aesthetically appealing. But ramjets in space still drives me nuts when I see that. And if these Ramjets are for atmospheric flight, they'd still need some kind of lift design. Even as a kid, I remember watching the original Battlestar Galactica thinking What's the intake for?

Drake Dragonfly Question and Answer session Part 1.

Seems the Dragonfly was once planned as a significantly larger vehicle (factor 6).

The new ATV show has a good look at the interior of the HERALD  (around Timestamp 18:00) and an extended cut of the Drake Caterpillar walkaround (around Timestamp 36:00).
And you get a good look at some locations of the GrimHex pirate station.

Looking forward to the F8 Heavy Fighter. Pure military vessel which you will most likely fly in Squadron 42. Cannot be bought by civilians (= there is no pledge package for that).

But who knows? If you have a high reputation with the UEE Navy in the Persistent Universe AND you run a certified merc/security outfit, perhaps these become available at some point in the future.

I really want the Redeemer to be flight ready, but it was designed so long ago, they're going to have to go back and redo all the item ports and piping. :(
  • ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,328
As the Redeemer does not appear in SQ42 to my knowledge it was lower on the priority list for this year.

Yeah, Paul Dalessi (Contest designer hired by CIG) hopped on the forums awhile back (several months ago) and mentioned he wants to update it, but he's been assigned another project. So far no one has been assigned the Redeemer AFAIK.
