I should add 6.) complaining about the opinions of others... Then follow my own advice, I guess. :)
You know what they say about opinions, right?
and your point is? anyone, everyone! is just as entitled to their opinion as the writer, wasted post.

No, people should not buy products that they find deficient, be it in quality or payment model.
I'm wondering, @Kyleran, would you not criticize the developers and publishers of EVE if something that you perceived to be destructive to the quality and integrity of the game was announced for a future patch? I'm not sure of your answer but I'd honestly be surprised and actually saddened if you would not, knowing your passion for EVE.

Certainly many of us can recognize it may not be that easy to give up, let go, move on, when we have an MMORPG that we connect with passionately, for the various oh so many reasons we do connect with MMORPGs. Moreover, is there really that many MMORPGs that don't have similar monetization issues? Is it not abundantly clear that finding an alternative MMORPG that meets our needs and expectations is uncertain and for many of us even unlikely?

Some will say stop beating a dead horse. And yet others will answer do not go quietly into that good night.

One other point: @Beansnbread astutely referred to this earlier in the thread, about how we might not all be on the same page of what grade of dissent we're referring to in this thread. Hopefully, it's obvious that some of us are kind of owning a pejorative term by wearing it proudly when we suggest that our protestations--our critiques--are merely complaints, that we are mere complainers. But let it be clear that much of the criticism in this thread is aiming higher than commiseration and tantrum, and that it's unclear that the OP admits the difference, at least on his specific list of uncomplainables.
CCP has made several changes over the years I haven't cared for, first the intro of a cash shop, later the higher pricing to train a 2nd character simultaneously one account, more recently skill extractors/injectors.

In each case I had to weigh whether or not it changed things enough to spoil my fun, and since they didn't I keep playing.

At no point did I even send an angry email about the changes, they wouldn't have changed it anyways.

Now I'm looking at the new alpha clones with a wary eye, but so far doesn't appear to be.

I'd not want see RNG loot boxes in EVE but if they show up I'm not likely to leave over them.

[mod edit] Stop complaining. Yeah, okay buddy. Lets just sit back and let the big MMO Companies without a care in the world milk us for every last nickle we have with lockboxes and cash-shop items rather than churning out well made content.

Lets just all sit back while dishonest companies go back on their word over and over again.

Lets just sit back as carebears ruin, yes ruin, the MMORPG genre with making things so casual everything becomes faceroll.

You don't compete in PvE... are you like... wait you are I pointed that out in the first sentence. If you are apart of any top PvE community/guild you are indeed competing against other players. There is no top raiding guild if there is no top to be apart of. Not to mention in something like in TERA where you are literally competing against other guilds for Crusade rankings to get guild Castles.

I can't recall a consumer, end user of games, EVER desiring for a game to be created so that it is a successful business endeavor. I have so many priorities about the product that take precedent. Do I desire it? Can I afford it? Will I enjoy it?

Never once do I think, "if I buy this product from them, will their profit margin please their desires?"
Then you are a very short-sighted individual. Games that are not successful business endeavors go out of business and take the development teams that made them down along with them. And then you don't get more of those games.

The more a product costs to make, the more money it has to bring in to recover that investment. If you want it to have all the bells and whistles, but you don't want to actually pay for them enough to keep the game company afloat, then you have unsustainable expectations that no game company can afford to listen to.

People who steadfastly refuse to acknowledge this reality and incorporate it into their thinking amaze me.
Right, so the past 10 years I must've been imagining all these games that have come out rehashing the same bullshit greed tactics.

Seriously, are you new to this genre?

If you like to be urinated on by devs and pubs, that's your choice... but don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

"Then you are a very short-sighted individual." NO, I AM THE CONSUMER. I have 0 obligation to the game developer's need to createa sustainable business model WHILE PRODUCING A PRODUCT THAT CONSUMERS WANT. NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY AS THE CONSUMER.

You  seem to think that being a consumer and being short-sighted are mutually exclusive. They aren't.

What I was describing was the natural outcome of following that course of action. If you demand business models that game developers cannot simultaneously give you and stay competitive in the industry, then they will simply stop listening to you because they can't afford to listen to you.

If that's your preferred course of action, go for it. I will continue to find it amazingly self-defeating. But I won't need all-caps to express it.

Not even a forum post expressing your dissenting opinion?

If not, was it only that you could not foresee any reversion, any alteration, of their plans? Or was it perhaps also that you were put off by the grating noise of too much angry protest? I have to admit those 100 page doom and gloom threads usually put me off joining the complainers too, regardless of whatever clarity or sanity I hope I might bring.

Colour me surprised though. I could have sworn you have a generally scornful attitude regarding certain features or lack of features in MMORPGs, that you aren't exactly shy about stating in many of your posts.

I'm still wondering if we're talking about two entirely different grades of conspicuous dissent here. You didn't reply to that portion of my previous post.

#5 Many games have superior rewards as well and terrible rewards randomly set together
Seems like in many cases you may obtain better items not just cosmetic items

#4 Well this sounds like it would be good in theory, but almost never happens in reality
This is where chat muting and disabling chat would work

#3 Except when it is and someone who does not pay will never catch up

#2 Choices can be both good and bad, have not tried a good sandbox mmo yet
There may be good sandboxes out there I have yet to try

#1 Sometimes localization is censorship sometimes it isnt, it depends on what was changed

In the end though it is all about money and sustaining their game

Complaining sounds fine, people have been doing it since we existed

Constructive criticism is good, but if a developer does not care at least others will know

I can see a lot of people's brains kicked out the back of their skull. The left the autopilot on rage rant. Many of these point hit pretty close to home plate.

Cash shopping the hell out of a game though, kind of ruins the game. Cosmetics are ok, xp is ok, but soliciting pvp items or gear items of the like is not.

Sandboxing to themeparking is something I can't tell the difference on. I can't see how you pull of sandboxing with people at different levels. Unless you do it like the OBT version of Firefall then thats fine.

Random lockboxes you have to buy the keys to, not cool. If you're going to do that you need two different types of boxes, one premium with keys you have to buy and one standard with keys you can find or make.

Carebears and NOOBs yeah everyone is a noob at one point or another and pretty much still are. The moment the devs change something requires you to learn all over again, mean you have to start all from scratch. Carebear I have no clue what that is.

Localization and censorship. Yeah that kind of goes hand in hand. Tera's Elin is an example, the lore specifically states that the Elin never age beyond a certain point. And are pretty much immortal, but letting them dress provocative even though they don't age is questionable. I look at the Elin as pretty much adults and that's it'. I still want them to cover up though. It's just whorish to walk with you ass hanging out.

All in all I think this article is the just expressing his opinion. For some people to say they aren't coming back this site ever again is childish and stupid. The is a difference between constructive criticism and straight up whining like a little bitch. Whining never makes a gamer look good and all reason for Devs to just to ignore you. Like Tom Clancy's The Division, people say that game sucks, plain boing, and is out right dead. Why because of the Dark Zone, the optional (PVP,but not really) zone is raising a lot of people's ire. Maybe they should have split the game into two servers. One where PvP doesn't come into play until max rank and the otheras is. Because let's face pve players can never get along with pvp players. And making pve players go into a zone that requires you to run the risk of getting shot by players looking to cause problems. While trying to raise your gear and rank so you can pvp later isn't going to work. But with games nowadays complaining is inevitable.

While we're at it, let's discuss will people complain about Battlefield 1 when it comes out? Because battlefield 1 really is the same previous tittle to come out. The only difference? The downgraded warfare technology. What are the odds that battlefield 1 won't come out in the same state as StarWars Battlefronts. Knowing that tidbit how many people still pre-ordered Battlefield 1?

Since when does a gaming 'review' website that openly accepts payment for biased articles, have any place to think they can tell gamers to stop complaining about P2W MMOs??

At least there is one developer who does not share your views on F2P.  Sad, that this had to come out on another gaming site.

    5.) THE RANDOM REWARD LOCKBOX

Yes, these are annoying to get and hold onto in your inventory until you inevitably either a.) delete them or b.) cave in and buy keys to unlock them. But so long as the rewards contained within these loot boxes are obtainable by players via other means or just plain cosmetic, we need to get over it when we see item stores stocking their shelves with these things. They’re not hurting anyone, and frankly if you have enough money to gamble on digital dress-up outfits, more power to you.

    SAY WHAT?!?

You can take that last part and shove it right up your Death Star exhaust portal.

There are numerous publicized articles of people with gambling/spending addictions splurging on game cash shops. Yeah, it sounds ridiculous but that doesn't make it any less true.

There are also cases where children have gained access to their parent's/grandparent's credit card and made tens of thousands of dollars worth of cash shop purchases.

It's incredibly irresponsible to suggest that items like cash shop loot boxes are "not hurting anyone", and it tends to lend more credence to the notion that you're writing from the perspective of a paid representative for companies that use such unethical tactics.

No, we DON'T "need to get over it". These cash shop model tactics deliberately prey on certain demographics of consumers, and any company that supports this type of monetary transaction SHOULD receive negative backlash from consumers loudly and often.

The noob thing gets me when I started playing MMO's for the first time back in 2002 it wasn't meant as a derogative term. They called me newby, but they also taught me everything they knew about the game to me and how to play my class. In the end it paid off I became a skilled veteran at the game able to return the favor onto other newbies.
  • tihoatihoa Member UncommonPosts: 30
I disagree with a lot of the stuff that is posted.

Random reward lock boxes are terrible. A majority of these are purchased from the item mall and reward cosmetics, but these are often cosmetics that provide stats and essentially functions as an entire second set of equipment. This practice is insane. It's like playing a game where half of your equipment cannot be dropped by any enemy in the game and requires you to go to a casino for a chance to get it. Even cosmetics without stats can be an issue when you see those dance games that make it so that players cannot even buy permanent cosmetic items without spending real money.

I feel that PvE is the core of every game period because that's where most players tend to fall. PvP is often part of a vocal minority and PvP can be an after thought, but a game is practically garbage if you don't have decent PvE. PvP only games tend to fail more quickly and "hardcore" style games where all progress is lost upon death is the only thing that can reach the grave faster than PvP only games. A lot of PvE only players tend to stay quiet compared to the PvP players who tend to be much more vocal and passionate about what they have to say.

Not everything is pay to win, but far too many games are. The ability to sell cash shop items on the item mall will benefit a company by allowing for "whales," big players who spend a huge amount of money on a game. However, this also means that by selling those items, in game gold becomes concentrated in the hands of the biggest spenders. You have to remember that weapons and outfits with stats are sold in Black Desert Online's item mall, which means it has always been pay to win because of the exclusive items that provide stats in there. This is despicable in a buy to play game, which is supposed to avoid having the disadvantages of a free to play game. Instead, buy to play games are now just free to play games that attempt to double dip on an exploitable player base.

I feel that sandbox MMOs do not really exist, but that's just me. Even the biggest MMOs with the most features are concentrated around crafting and raiding for the end game.

I disagree on the localization is not censorship. Most of the time, localization is censorship. Why? During the localization process, ideas, themes, and messages are changed, thus altering the original content in a way to remove all references to something. The original content is affected and thus becomes censorship. In the case of skeleton censorship, it is often thematic, removing the reference of dead, undead, demons, and ghosts. They often serve as something important in a culture. In China, people are afraid of depictions of skeletons because they believe that it will cause the ghost of the original people to haunt them. This is slightly more justifiable than the others, but still censorship as they probably had to rewrite a lot of the story and change references to undead to make it fit. By rewriting the story and their background, it becomes a censorship of ideas, much like how TMS #FE censored basically every single reference to sexy modeling.

In Blade and Soul and TERA, much of the censorship has little to do with the Elin or the Lyn. There was significantly more censorship on the revealing outfits being worn by the other female characters, mostly by covering up cleavage and the legs on female characters. And worst of all, they were done unnecessarily in addition to not being done properly. They were done lazily with what appears to be airbrushing skin tight shirts and pants onto character models. You can tell because you have some nice looking clothes, and then what appears to be black latex pants attached to it.

5 Lootboxes..nah we should stop supporting those devs that ruin the immersion of games with outside income sources.

4 Carebears and noobs are not totally to do with pvp,not sure where that notion came from?Matter of fact,a carebear could have absolutely nothing to do with pvp.In general we don't need the derogatory titles like this but it goes farther into the rude gamer, that likes to act like mr.know it all in game and race to end level thinking that PROVES their point.

3 P2W..The problem here is NOT the factual definition fo each word,it is the overall picture that should be noted. When i or ANYONE purchases a game,we EXPECT top have access to every last piece of the game,we do NOT expect to have some of the contents hidden behind another pay wall. There is actual law behind car sales not listing the EXACT prices, why well because it is DECEPTIVE ,so is the author of this thread condoning DECEPTIVE practices?

2 Sandbox/Themepark,two totally offbase terms.I for one NEVER search for a rpg thinking of either one of these terms,i simply look for immersion and a well designed game.

1 This topic sort of falls under the last one,i never care about where a game is from or it's various regions,i simply yet again look for a game i believe is well designed.I am not even sure why this is a bothersome topic? So happens and imo the proper way to do it is like Square did with FFXI,we all played together from all over the world on the SAME servers. So are we saying OTHER devs are simply greedier and looking to nickle and dime every last cent it can out of some change on it's localized servers?

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Bumping two year old threads is not on the list, so it's fair to complain about.  Please, don't bump threads that died more than two years ago.
  • DvoraDvora Member UncommonPosts: 499
Bleh sorry but ya mostly garbage article. Get with the times even if they suck? Ya no we don't have to like it, and if we don't and we don't say anything about it how is a company ever to know that hey there is a market for a game without all this [insert controversial topic here] crap??

We should just shut up when greed and catering to laziness ruins games for the rest of us that don't spend money beyond what used to be considered a fair flat rate. Loot boxes are the evil and p2w is the devil, in an MMO. Other games less based around character development could get away with more, but not MMO's.

Even just cash shop cosmetics take away from what MMO's used to be about, earning your character's skills and appearances so that it meant something. And inevitably the cosmetics get so out of line with over top flash and g-string bikinis and panda suits as they continue to search for something to sell.

Maybe it's all here to stay but again we sure don't have to like it. Nor do we have to like it when people tell us to shut up about it and give up all hope one mainstream big budget game in the future might actually think about making a game instead of a marketing machine.
