I don't even like WoW all that much.
I defend WoW because so many people shit on it simply because it is popular and try to ignore the fact that for whatever one may feel about the game, it is the most popular mmorpg in history and as such, the game can't be all that bad. For instance, I can't stand FFIX and yet I don't dump because it is a popular for many and that tells me the game can't be all that bad if a couple of million players are subscribe to it.
That's all you hear on forums, "WoW sucks so bad." Apparently 6Million customers disagree.

I don't know why so many fight over games. What is good and what is bad? It's all a matter of personal opinion. I'm just curious as to why games bring out so much angst?
i once read one of the Shannara books..... i think it was the first one, not sure tho and i can t say anything about the later books because i threw it away in disgust and didn t even finish it, why ?
because it was the most shameless rippoff of the classic lord of the rings i ever read. Even the names were similar. They had an äquivalent to every single LOTR character from Aragorn to the hobbits to gimli with just slightly changed names ! LOL. and guess what? the mage got accosted by a vile monster and they all thought he died in the cave with it....... as i said, i can t say anything about the quality of the Shannara series as a whole because i didn t read it , but that one book had me disgusted.
and that s how i feel about WoW also. As someone who has played Everquest it is just disgusting to see such a shameless ripoff void any innovation at all. The same pitfalls, gear mudflation, raid centric endgame and pointless grind in the name of "longevity of the game".
i don t doubt that WoW is very very enjoyable to first time MMO players, and that s where i guess all the popularity comes from. And even veterans might take a liking to the early lvlup game from 1-60 that at least was a somewhat different take. But i dare say most people that played a previous MMO for a significant amount of time will be disgusted with WoW in the long run. and i guess that s where all the hate comes from.
2,000,000 copies? This is all a NO-FEE subsription game can muster? How patheitc.
The only thing here that's pathetic, besides your spelling (a WoW fanboy who can't spell, that's a shocker *rolleyes*) is your attempt to claim that a brand new, non franchise title from a brand new company selling two million copies is pathetic.
You're just another case in point.. the reason so many of us hate WoW is that the user base of WoW is filled with mouth breathing, uneducated morons who constantly spout off as if this highly derivative and unoriginal game is god's gift to MMOs. In all honesty, the game itself isn't anywhere near as bad as most of the people who still play it.
Let me start of by saying I have played more than a few MMORPG games, and yes there are aspects of several games in WoW, but i wouldnt say it is a rip off of those games. What it appears Blizzard did was take some of the most popular features of other games and incorperated them into thier own uniqe setting, The lore of Warcraft has been around a long time and WoW follows the same story line that the other Warcraft series games. Blizzard most likly felt that there was no reason to reinvent the wheel and for that I applaud them, this game has ease of use, few bugs ( compaired to other MMO's) and while costumer support at times is bad and other times horrid, it still beats the guides from EQ that scratched thier buts when you reported a bug. If you don't like WoW, then the ansewr for you is simple, don't play it and don't read WoW forums, if you like WoW then more power to you, other MMO behemoths would do well to take a page from Blizzards book on how to make a popular game that has replayability ( if you get tired of a PvE server try a PvP one, or try rolling a diferent side for example). anyways that is all i have to say on the matter. Hope you all havea wonderful day
WoW as of last May (a date you quoted) sold 19,000,000 copies of WoW. By the way, as of this month (June) Guild Wars isnt' even in top 5 of the best selling PC Games and who's on top for June so far?
In addition, the release confirms that Guild Wars was the top-selling PC game for the month of May 2006.

In all honesty, WoW isn't that bad. I think they lost site of the initial concept (fun, casual MMO) and started sticking too many "hardcore" MMO features (40 person raiding) into a game that really wasn't designed for that sort of thing, and that is it's main problem.
I just can't resist trolling the stereotypical rejects that show up to defend the game with all their "U DON LIKE WOW CUZ IT IS POPULAR!1!one!!" BS and that's why I bash it more than it probably deserves. The game is very easy to play, and this allows far too many people who can barely handle tying their own shoes to play it, which is probably why the WoW "community" is so god awful. Yes, that's a blanket statement; I did meet some good folks playing WoW whom I still keep in touch with. However, in general, the "community" is really awful.

That is why you hate WoW? Hehehe, I take you don't like much in the way of RPG's/MMORPG's if that's the case.
Almost every fantasy-middle earth RPG/MMORPG out there rips off from Tolkien to some degree, so your argument is a complete failure and not to mention total hypocrisy. Hell, D&D is a rip-off from Tolkien.
If you are going to use such examples for hating WoW, at least educate yourself on the history of RPG's.
If copying from other sources gets you that uptight, you must hate everything in life. There are few things in this World that is unique in thought or creation, almost everything that is created in our world today is copied from some other source.
Time to take off the tinfoil hat and leave the conspiracy theories to the writers of SCI-FI.

This is coming from some fool who's still breastfeeding from his mother's teats. Who cares if you hate WoW, if your intelligence is a representation of those who hate WoW, it's like comparing that bag of flesh between your ears with a soiled bedpan.
The fact is, you're just another trailer trash junkie who shits on WoW because your job of flipping burgers at McDonald's barely gives you two nickles to rub together. I've seen your type a million times: Societies wretched who's total life accomplishments amounts to nothing more than utter failure. You cling to the belief that if you can find something to shit on (an mmorpg no less), it will some how brighten what has become your meaningless existence.
Of course you don't like WoW, your too damn poor and you possess an IQ of 20 - Profound Mental Retardation.
Go back to Runescape child...
...and stop asking your mommy to spell check everyones pages uh? If in your simple stupidity that is all you have for an argument, then you are indeed useless.
Wow, someone's a bit defensive.
You know some folks don't like WoW for a reason, not just because most of the players are self centered and immature. 1-60 was great, 60 blows, grind faction, grind zones (the same ones repeatedly) to get the upgrades then move to the next zone, grind out honor by queueing for PVP in "instanced" zones, queue to login.
The end game of WoW is raid and grind, nothing else unless you want to queue to PVP. BG's are the worst thing that happened to WoW and should be removed. When I get on I don't want to sit in queue for 2-3 hours just to play, sorry you can't work out overpopulated realms Blizzard, not my fault. Try paying attention to other games and how they resolved that. You know, defendable towers/keeps... numbers don't win there.
The development cycle of Blizzard is pathetic as well. The only new content released is raid and DM. DM was about a year ago. What? the new patch today is nothing but more raid content, wow big suprise.
WoW is just turning into a worse version of EQ1. The raids are far to long, require to many people and are REQUIRED if you want to compete in the artificial instanced PVP zones.
What happened to the War in this game? Why did Blizzard hire EQ1 raid leaders to set the direction of the game?
Good luck with all that and the same boring content Mr. Defensive.

That pretty sums up every single mmorpg, as people were whining about that crap back when UO was the biggest mmorpg on the block.
Every single mmorpg has so called "immature players," the frequency in which you run into them is largely dependent on the population size. To claim WoW has more, has no basis of fact in which to make such a claim.

It does have a basis in fact seeing as this was from my experience across 3 servers all of which I got to 60 on. I never said it was fact for everyone. However if you're trying to claim WoW doesn't have more immature players than say AO or EQ then be prepaired to be laughed out of your beanbag chair

EVERY mmo has immature players, hell, I think all of us has acted immature on a online game; don't say you haven't cause that's bullcrap. I have before, but I don't get as annoying as some do. There are some players who sit around all day and bug the hell out of players, it's like God told them in a dream to do it all day, every day.
Now the arguement that WoW has more immature players than all the mmos.
I could believe where you're going with it. Why? Well, WoW has a lot of younger aged players than Everquest, and other mmos. Why? Well, WoW is simple, it's really easy to understand and what to do but, I'm not saying it isn't a good game.
Not to be a WoW hater, but I have never played a more boring mmorpg. How is level 1-60 a blast? I was bored after level 1.
I am sorry, but kill tasks are NOT quests. Play a game like AC1 and learn what a real quest is. Quests should be story driven and involve actual player skill (something absent in WoW).
Where is the strategy in WoW pvp? I sure never saw it. At least GW reguires extreme team cooperation (headsets are a must). WoW players just jump around spamming the same couple spells (maybe its cause there are only a few spells that do anything).
Why do WoW players think there simplified mmo is the best thing ever? At least people are finally realizing the lack of depth in their tiny mmo.
Most players that actually played a real mmorpg before WoW know how tedious it really is.
I mean, I think Blizzard made a genius move when they released WoW in North America because it catered well to the USA gaming style. Personally, I'm more of a fan of the Asian gaming style, where leveling takes forever and a lot of grinding is involved. I know it sounds like I'm sadistic or something, but I feel the rewards obtained after working so hard to level makes up for it. You spend so much time on your character... and when you're finally max level, you know for a fact that you're among the few who spent the time and energy. WoW, on the other hand, caters to the more "everybody wins" concept where everyone is capable to reaching max level without as much effort.
Now don't start throwing tomatoes and other produce at me yet... by "without as much effort" I'm not saying hitting lvl 60 is easy. I know it's not easy. But it's not as hard as say... Lineage II or FFXI.
But yes, WoW is a good game in the sense that it appeals more to the immediate action immediate results audience.
Well, the site polls (and please don't misconstrue this, MMORPG.COM, since you're my best MMORPG resource) are not a clear indicator of the quality of a game:
Utility maximization depends on the person and not only the quality of the game; games like FFXI that are vastly inferior to their competitors in terms of Graphics, Gameplay etc. are being subscribed to and enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people.
Another fact is that the only people that were able to participate in the statistic were those that knew about this site: The entire population of people that subscribe to mmorpgs is not represented (not by a long shot).
Since WoW has the greatest number of subscribers in the US, it can be inferred that it is also the most popular in the US.
I personally think that WoW and EQ2 are the best two MMORPGs in terms of quality and that some of the highly ranked MMORPGS (like Ryzom, FFXI and EVE) are veterate crap.
PS: A person's preferred MMORPG is not an indicator of his/her intelligence.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
Originally posted by powerpack I have to say that WoW is a good game.

i don't see how you can say wasting time grinding and such is more rewarding. i mean, sure you feel better when you hit higher levels... almighty and all... but what's the point of that? why favor a system that has a tendency to weed gamers? a lot of online gamers aren't as hard-core, and just want to find a game where they could spend a little time everyday. not many people really want to make a career out of leveling their character. unless, of course, they plan to sell their max leveled character, in which case i say that's GAY.
but otherwise, there's no need to weed out players. that's what i really don't understand about asian gaming... they're all so competitive. so yes, you're right about WoW being a good game because of who it looks good to, but i really don't see gaming in any other way.
Im trying to understand why you bother to post about a game, if you think it sucks so much.
I love wow, and I think all other games suck (I don't think this way but lets say I do). Why the hell I would bother going in and hijacking threads about the games I never played, or I played them 10 hours and still know nothing about that game. Why the hell I would waste my time (even if only 5 minutes) to post shit about games I don't give 2 cents for.
I really wonder, how many people that are saying that WoW is an easy game actually experienced the end game like AQ, and since today, Naxxramas.
If you love your game, whatever it is, eve gw etc, why you spend your time here posting shit about other games. Don't you better spend your time playing the game you do like, instead of spending it writting shit about others games.
I think that most of the kids posting here crap about a game or another don't have self confidence, and they need others to agree with them. I really don't see another reason.
All this whine its exactly as going in shops and yelling at people that they should buy and drink fanta not coke. All this because you enjoy fanta more than coke.
Do you also tell your friends that they are retards if they like chicks with big tits, just because you like small tits more ?
Note: this is a whine post, this is just a LOL @ stupid people.

I did do endgame raiding in WoW, and BG PVP and as someone who has played almost every major MMO that has come out since UO, in my educated opinion the game is very easy. Oh, and I don't care about breast size, I'm an ass man
i played WoW for 4 months, i got lvl 60, epic gear and end game raiding and got to rank legionnaire in pvp (horde)
i found the game not to have any RPG elements what so ever, maybe a few but the game is simply a glorified 3rd person shooter with a party system.
all quests are surrounding the "kill 10 of this" "kill 50 of this and 50 of that and collect 10 of this" *yawn*, if you are starting out in the MMORPG area/world, then i spose this is a "good" starting area although its really a MMOFPS (3rd person) because its seriously not an RPG.
Compare WoW to real RPG's like Baulders Gate or Neverwinter nights, can u really role play in WoW. i found it next to impossible with all the little 12 year old noobs (even the older players were tools) running around on the role playing servers and the normal servers.
dont get me wrong thou, the game is good, but not a good RPG, a good 3rd person shooter/hack n' slash game.
If you want to kill heaps of stuff and let go of some anger on gnomes, then i think its the game for you. But if you want an actual RPG game instead of a hack n slash 3rd person shooter then this game is definatly not for you.
Oh, I don't know, I think one can roleplay in any game if they so choose.
My main game is Lineage 2 and it is MORE of the kill X amount of this and Y amount of that. Yet it is called a MMORPG. Other games such as City of Heroes or Everquest II seem to be similiar, except that EQII allows one to have individual player housing.
Roleplay can happen at anytime. Just requires 2 or more players and a vivid imagination.
In any case, WoW is what it is. I think what happens is that since it is so successful and has garnered a pretty loyal fanbase, that "more serious" MMORPG players start resenting it and can't understand why it is "all that".
The gameplay works for some and not for others. All games are like this. If people play the game and enjoy it then great. If you cease to enjoy it then just move on.
Once again, I will point out that we are all individuals and have individual wants and needs. I really don't see any reason to knock a game that is successful because of so many reasons just because it doesn't appel to you. It's almost gotten to the point that people need to validate their decisions by making that which they do not like "lesser" and therefore "no good".
Just seems childish to me. Again, of people like it then play it. If not then go elsewhere. Plenty out there and more coming down the pipeline.
And, there is always going out, getting fresh air and going for a walk or hike.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Right, I’m getting tired of all this WoW is crap bull. Firstly, I am a casual player, have a job, social life GF, and I get 3 hours max of WoW a day, and that’s really the max. Now i have been playing 4 months, and currently have 4 level 20-30 characters, been trying different classes.
So what’s with all this, you can hit 60 in 1 month and then it gets sht. Well if u skip the quests, and level 1 character, wtf do u expect? Masses of enjoyment? Trouble is....people power level to the max level, and don’t take time to enjoy the game.
Games are for fun, not hard work. And WoW is fun, like people say, ''until you hit level 60 cap'' though, these people don’t enjoy the climb to 60.
Guild wars is a good game, don’t get me wrong, i bought it before WoW, and loved it but once i got WoW, and started playing it, Guild wars just seemed crap i cudnt get back into it anymore.
The 2 games are very different anyway, so its very hard to compare the 2.

"the game is simply a glorified 3rd person shooter with a party system." Do you even know what a shooter is?

Yes WoW does have SOME quests like that to help you lvl, but why not mention that wow has plenty of real, epic, quests that most mmos cant even compare too. Sounds like you just mindlessly grinded from 1 to 60 and ignored everything esle. and again what i ask do you know what FPS is?
"Compare WoW to real RPG's like Baulders Gate or Neverwinter nights, can u really role play in WoW. i found it next to impossible with all the little 12 year old noobs (even the older players were tools) running around on the role playing servers and the normal servers." WoW is an MMO and Baulders Gate is an offline(yes it can be played online but its annoying waiting for others to read the quest log while your frozen) RPG, there are different aspects to that you have to concider when making an mmo because there will be OTHER PEOPLE playing too. The two games are of different genre so why compare them.
"dont get me wrong thou, the game is good, but not a good RPG, a good 3rd person shooter/hack n' slash game." WoW has one of the richest lore and rpg elements in the MMO genre, because its based off Warcraft which has been around for YEARS and has comics, books, other games, and soon to be a movie. And all that is intergrated into WoW, how can you say that it has no RP element? did you JUST hear of warcraft? and did you just grind from 1 to 60.

Defensive.

Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium
Neptus - WoW - Detheroc
But only for a certain audience.
I have to say that WoW is a good game.

i don't see how you can say wasting time grinding and such is more rewarding. i mean, sure you feel better when you hit higher levels... almighty and all... but what's the point of that? why favor a system that has a tendency to weed gamers? a lot of online gamers aren't as hard-core, and just want to find a game where they could spend a little time everyday. not many people really want to make a career out of leveling their character. unless, of course, they plan to sell their max leveled character, in which case i say that's GAY.
but otherwise, there's no need to weed out players. that's what i really don't understand about asian gaming... they're all so competitive. so yes, you're right about WoW being a good game because of who it looks good to, but i really don't see gaming in any other way.
i am a successfull leaver of WoW and i did turn to guild wars
i played wow for about 3 monthes till i was bored out of my mind
i picked up guild wars after that and ive been playing it ever since
i guess its just about what the person likes...to me,
::WoW = mass grinding
::GW = strategy
Note: this is a whine post, this is just a LOL @ stupid people.

i found the game not to have any RPG elements what so ever, maybe a few but the game is simply a glorified 3rd person shooter with a party system.
all quests are surrounding the "kill 10 of this" "kill 50 of this and 50 of that and collect 10 of this" *yawn*, if you are starting out in the MMORPG area/world, then i spose this is a "good" starting area although its really a MMOFPS (3rd person) because its seriously not an RPG.

With over 50% of the MMO market the FACTS show that if you are an MMO player that doesn't have a WOW account you are in the minority.
Flame On WOW Haters!
" found the game not to have any RPG elements what so ever, maybe a few"
..Uhh...ok?
"the game is simply a glorified 3rd person shooter with a party system."
Do you even know what a shooter is?

the MMORPG area/world, then i spose this is a "good" starting area

Yes WoW does have SOME quests like that to help you lvl, but why not mention that wow has plenty of real, epic, quests that most mmos cant even compare too. Sounds like you just mindlessly grinded from 1 to 60 and ignored everything esle. and again what i ask do you know what FPS is?
"Compare WoW to real RPG's like Baulders Gate or Neverwinter nights, can
u really role play in WoW. i found it next to impossible with all the

WoW is an MMO and Baulders Gate is an offline(yes it can be played online but its annoying waiting for others to read the quest log while your frozen) RPG, there are different aspects to that you have to concider when making an mmo because there will be OTHER PEOPLE playing too.
