Welcome to this week's episode of "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom"...
Today we have stumbled upon the Forum Troll in its natural habitat... Crikey! Notice how fast it strikes, coming out of NOWHERE to deliver a one line attack post in the forums for a game it apparently has no interest in! And look how it riles up the natives so! This one is clearly an aged and experienced Forum Troll! We should all consider ourselves lucky to have gotten to experience such a sight first hand!
That's all for the show this week, please join us again on "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom!"

Haha! I can't believe it, the troll got owned by a Mythic rep! Damn that made me laugh so hard.
eh cartoony? You do realise this is a game? I do not see orcs or goblins, or elves for that matter when walking about in real life and I don't expect a game with orcs or goblins to look like real life either. I expect a game to have a friendly UI, engaging combat, alot of options in game to apeal to alot of different players or to apeal to me depending on my mood and how I feel like playing today and most of all a decent community. Saying that, I see nothing wrong with the graphics here. Looks pretty cool to me :P
P.S. When I see screenshots of the characters, I don't think of WoW. They look so much like the miniatures. Guess you aren't a fan of the table top game?

I think WAR will do well. I always like the tabletop game but I am very leary of what it has to offer. I'll hold my opinion until I see how PvP vs Raid style it is.

I guess my whole point is that not all of us like the cartoony graphics, but, of course, the masses of gaming youth out there will love it.
It's sort of like the phenomenon I saw at this one amusement park that was legendary for its frightening Halloweenfest. They had strobe lights, chain saws, the works and it'd scare anybody, even adults. One year they decided to dumb it down for the masses of kids, since kids are mostly their primary customer. Jason the chainsaw wielding freak got replaced with Casper the Friendly ghost, and the park was no longer very scary on Halloween. It got sanitized basically, dumbed down, smoothed over for the masses.
That's what cartoonish graphics do for MMORPG's. Sure, they have their following, and it's big. But it sure would be cool to see a little more realism in the graphics department. Would make for a more immersive game, in my opinion.
[As far as the comment about a Mythic Rep "owning" a potential customer, no one "owns" their customers. The customer always wins, because the customer takes his credit card and goes somewhere else. The guy can go back and brag in the boardroom about how he slammed a former Mythic player (yes, I was in DAOC for a time), but he won't be counting my dollars in this revenue figures.]

But you made it clear in your first post we wouldn't be counting your dollars anyway... We fully realize our game isn't for everyone, we're not out to convert everyone to our side or whatever. If you like it, you'll play it, if you don't, you'll play something else. If you're looking for me to beg you to like WAR and come play it you're barking up the wrong tree. Your post was meant to do nothing more than troll, which I pointed out.

Take a look at Oblivion: Elder Scrolls, then glance at WOW graphics. While both have their place, it sure would be neat to see to high-powered graphics in a good MMORPG.

Well I agree with you there. Oblivion looks sweet compared to WoW. But I am pants when it comes to fps so sadly Oblivion isn't for me. Someone posted a visual comparison here in these forums of WoW and WAR graphics and I much prefer WAR graphical style, though again I feel WAR is certainly keeping to it's roots (which predate WoW as you probably know) evidence of which can be found in the army books available from games workshop. Again I'm a fan of the tabletop game but probably more of a fan of putting together and painting the miniatures then playing. My sons got me interested with wood elves as a Christmas present one year and I think it's great.
I am not trying to belittle you for your opinion by the way. I guess I wish people would stop comparing this game to WoW. Some of us have been waiting around for this one, for along time now. Yes, even before WoW release.

It really wasn't to troll, I think you jumped to conclusions on that. If I was trolling, I would have bashed the game and not acknowledged its probable future success. Basically, I was airing discontent (and I feel I'm not alone) that lots of these new games are going to go down the path of WOW, which is a glossy, dumbed down gaming experience aimed at the masses.
Maybe as I am a former grognard, I'm also part of a dying group of gamers who remembers EQ's glory days. Not every gamer wants "easy and cartoony". But, most folks do, so I guess it doesn't matter for the few.

Hmm again, I can find much to agree with you about. Do I think WoW has a dumbed down gaming experience? Absolutely. Take a look at the crafting for instance. Not alot of thought required for that at all. And apart from raiding (I refuse to go down that road ) there isn't even alot of planning or thought required. I have played WoW off and on since release and have played on mostly pvp servers. While it's a good game in some respects it is totally lacking in other areas, not least of all it's community. Those things I find fault with far more easily then it's graphics. So I guess it comes down to this game isn't WoW and the devs aren't WoW devs (as far as I know?) so I am looking for a gaming experience like no other or at least in close keeping to the Gamesworkshop tabletop games/lore.

To the OP, looks like a troll, sounds like a troll...
Maybe not you intention, but that is the way I took it as well.
The exagerated features and cartoonish looks are not to appeal to grade school kids who like saturday morning cartoons. It's to make the characters, like the the lore/background, over the top. Everything about Warhammer screams exageration.
I'm not a Warhammer scholar by anymeans, but the looks is faithful to IP, and Warhammer would not be Warhammer without the look. Just like it wouldn't be Warhammer without the blood, glore and war.
To the Mythic, if you put even half the edge into W.A.R. as you did in the post, you have my money.

Then take a look at the computer requirements to play Oblivion vs those to play WOW. You will find WOW is a lot more accessable. As well as having a much better frame rate.
The cartoony look ages a lot better than the nice graphic look as well.
So whilst I dont like the cartoony graphics, its certainly true to the Intellectual Property.
Oblivion's system requirements are a little high, but not as bad as a lot of people make them out to be. If you have a video card that can properly handle the pixel shaders you are fine. I certainly don't have a top of the line system.. gf6800 -256, 768 of ram and 3 gig P4 processor.. the game runs silky smooth for me.
Yet WOW's recommended system requirements are a whole lot lower than that
Intel Pentium® IV 1.5 GHz or AMD XP 1500+ MHz 1024 MB RAM (512M minimum) 64 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce FX 5700 class card or above Broadband Internet connection
So it will run on a computer thats 3-4 years old. Which opens it up to a lot more people.
I havent played Oblivion but perhaps you could tell us how you think it would perform as a MMORPG with hundreds of people on screen. Personally I think it would no longer run silky smooth.
I bet it would run pretty bad... but only because that isn't what the code was written for. I think there are certainly MMOs coming out with graphics comparable to oblivion. AoC and Aion are a few examples...
I guess it just comes down to preference. graphics are more important to some people than others. I'm sure WoW will run on a 3 year old machine.... but the trade-off is graphics that look 3 years old. The graphics style, more than the capabilities of the graphics engine, are really the main reason I never got in to WoW. With all the bright colors and flat textures... it just never has appealed to me.
like i said... it's just a matter of preference. I am not trying to trash the game... it just isn't for me.
Comments
Its a tad more realistic graphics wise than WoW
