Buddhism - Genuine threat to modern society

RazorbackRazorback Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 5,253

I have been thinking about this for some time and a program I watched recently confirmed my opinion that of all the religions, Buddhism presents the greatest threat to modern society.

(this is 10% tounge in cheek, but somewhat serious too)

So HOW THE #@$% you ask, does the peaceful and contemplative religion of Buddhism present a threat to anything ??

Well when I was in Thailand I watched the monks come down from their Wats (temples) in the mornings to recieve thier food from the people. Basically around sunrise they all come to town and people line the streets and as they walk past the people put food in their little baskets and thats what they have to eat that day.

Great for the monks coz it means they can spend the day busily emptying thier minds of all thoughts right ?

Yeah right..... but!!

What if everyone wanted to be a Buddhist ? What if all the worlds Pilots and Surgeons suddenly said tomorrow. "We are pretty sick of this whole consumer society trip man, we are going to go sit on a hill and think happy thoughts for the next 8 years"  Buddhism represents a genuine threat to modern society because it is completely devoid of any notion of contribution or work ethic.

Your whole purpose as a Buddhist is to personally reach "nirvana" (not the band). To reach a state of inner peace and tranquility, through meditation and letting go of wants. Buddhism only works because of the grace of normal people, allowing these lazy good for nothings to sit around and look wise.

DOWN WITH BUDDHISM!!! Stop it before it ruins us ALL!!

I've recently attained enlightenment, and therefore declare myself mmorpg.com's official buddhist monk. Feed me.

Aren't the Buddhist monks somewhat like Christian priests?  They're there to teach.  They contemplate things so that when the regular followers have questions they have answers.

Where do Christian priests get their money?  Are they working at Waffle House on the side?  Digging ditches for the city?  They do essentially the same thing.  They study the Bible to give answers to their church members as they pass the plate around to acquire their pay.

Only difference is these Buddhist monks aren't driving around in a new Cadillac.  They're actually spending their time studying and meditating.

The moral of the story is this; burn the churches, burn the temples, burn the synagogues and the mosques, down with religion!

I think if you read about Buddhism you'll find that it's different.

What kind of violence has Buddhism caused?  What kind of guilt or grief for their followers?  It's not at all like the western religions.  It's not too fair to lump it in with them.

If there is any religion that can stick with us through our transition into a scientific community, Buddhism fits the bill completely.

Not everybody who follows Buddhism sits in mediation 24/7. I personally think if any religion is bad for modern society, then its the islam.

Buddhists  are cool.  If their is any religion that people should be following nowadays it should be buddhism.  Well... its more of a philosophy(the earlier form of it atleast, when buddha wasn't worshipped as a god).

You haven't read about Buddhism have you?

That's not how it works.  They have this thing called "intent".

If you inadvertently hurt someone or something then how can that be held against you?  As long as you have love in your heart and base all your actions coming from that then your knowledge and experience grows.  They don't dance around trying to avoid single cell organisms because they can't.  You're supposed to do the best you can with what you have to do it with.

If you were trying to help someone and it turned out instead to hurt them, then you're okay.  Because your intentions were good.

So many people say it that I can never tell.  Sorry.

Did you know that there are texts in the Bible that mention reincarnation?  They were chosen to be disregarded instead of included.  I wonder why they would choose to hide something from Christians that is so important of a concept?

Did you know that greek gods (actually roman gods) were refered to in the bible?
Just because the bible has something in it... doesn't make it correct.. It depends on the context.... And there still is reincarnation in the Bible... Jesus...

No, Jesus = resurrection.  Completely different from reincarnation.

And the context of reincarnation that is in the neglected texts refers to the spirit leaving the body and then being born into a new one.  Look it up if you don't believe me.

If they really want to dedicate their lives to good, then maybe they should be spending their worthless lives helping the poor in 3rd world countries.....like Mother Teresa.....maybe then I could respect them a little more.

Dude I think I am going to e-mail your post to some friends.

I would respond to your post, but I think Gnomexxx summed it up pretty well.  You should have read the earlier posts and you would have seen it.

While on topic... Did you know that many mythologies from the bible are exactly the same or slightly modified versions of much earlier Greek/Roman mythos? This may piss someone off (or several people), but Jesus Christ and his "apostles" saw a good idea to make money off of, and brought it to their country, and voila! Worshipped!

Argh - When did they stop teaching history in school?

Must you cause me to resort to an aspirin addiction by reading your textualized drivel?

Well some Buddhist temples grow their own food. And some others can have enough for eat just from the donation of the people who go to the temple to worship.

And if you are a buddhist monk, you can't eat meat. Also no drinking, no smoking, no marriage/sex.

Though a few temples have a bit different rules. If I am not mistakening, Shaolin temple monks can eat meat. Because they need the energy for martial arts practicing.

Btw those are just monks. Just like priests in other religous. You don't have to be a monk in order to worship Buddhism. Also Buddhism extremely against fighting, they also allow their followers believe in other religous at the same time. Which is why many Asians believe in both Buddhism and Daoism at the same time.

    QFT

I know people that embrace the Buddhism religion, and they are more then functional in the society. Those monks are pretty much the same thing then christian priest, islamic Imam and the like.

I thought Buddhism was a way of life, whereas christianity was an hour a week thing. I didn't think real Buddhists had any intention of functioning in society. Go ahead and correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Yeah, and Christian call all other religous are fake...even within Christian different churchs might argue all day with each other on certain things.

Buddhism won't argue with you. They allow the followers to have multiple religous at the same time.

And I don't recall there were anything in Buddhism like crusaders or Inquistion...

Buddhism ftw, though I am not a believer ::::07::
