I concur with the OP. Enjoying the sandbox elements. The little things like bathing can influence how NPCs react to you... a lot of nice touches all around especially for an early alpha.

Definitions are different for people. Try it - you get full access for free. Then you can decide if it a 'true-sandbox' as defined by yourself.
