Probably going to get flamed for this, but... Would the Vulcans and Romulans be considered the elves and dark elves, respectively, of Star Trek? Am I the only person that has ever thought about this?

Have you tried Age of Conan? It has PVP and PVE, good class and character customization, a unique combat system, as well as really nice graphics for an MMO. It has gone through many changes since launch, so it wouldn't hurt to give it a trial run.

You might give Warhammer Online a try. They just began a trial that has no time limit, you are still limited to about the first 10 levels, but it will give you a good feel for the game.
