On a completely unrelated note, I just got a 30 gig iPod for my bday and this shit is taking forever to set up. I got all my pirated music in my library which took a couple hours, and now I have begun the tedious process of converting every one of my legitamately purchased CDs to mp3 format. Each CD is taking about 10 minutes, and I have a fuckton. It's a good excuse to study, but I'm getting drunk and trolling the forums instead. God I'm worthless.

If God created everything, he has to have some evil in him, too. So I think Jesus being born with original sin is just redundant.
Why would you say that?
Besides, how the hell can you prove original sin?
By getting a kid of my own and reporting his progress as I raise him. That's easy enough, but perhaps you meant, "How can I prove that there was a person named Adam who sinned and passed that sin down to all generations thereafter?" Short answer: I can't prove that. Not yet.
In order for God to be good, evil is a necessity.
Nah. I do not think that darkness is necessary for there to be light. Our full awareness of what light is, however, requires us to know first what darkness is. Without darkness, we would not realize the full effect of light - even if it would always be there. To know the full extent of the love of God, we must be able to experience life without it.
How do you know the Catholics don't have it all right?
If they agree with what Scripture says or suggests, then good for them. The hard part is first finding out what Scripture is telling you. Well, hard some times; easy at other times.
What I don't understand about the OT and NT issue is that: if God is omnipotent, why would he change his mind about what is right and wrong over the course of a few hundred years? Right and wrong should be pretty absolute in God's mind, so if God felt it was OK to kill thousands of innocents at Sodom and Gomorrah, why would he turn around and say "Love everyone, and turn the other cheek" in the New Testament.
Since God has existed forever and will exist forever, I think we can say that he exists outside of time or is not governed by it in any case. However, we are governed by time and God chose this way to interact with us. When we do something wrong, he does not punish us before we do it but during or afterward so that we may learn from it.
Right and wrong have not changed in God's eyes. And God did not kill thousands of innocents. Check out Genesis 13:13 and Genesis 19:1-9. The people of Sodom wouldn't even be considered to be innocent by today's standards. Now why he destroyed Sodom instead of forgiving it? That's unclear to me. They probably had been at it for quite a while. The Bible does indicate later, I think, (in the New Testament perhaps?) that the people of Sodom were able to repent but apparently they chose not to because they were not shown great miracles. I know, though, that those who do evil are not always guaranteed to get off the hook. Those who do evil have been used by God to make an example of his power - as far as I can remember. It seems to me, though, that when God does something he often has more than one reason for doing it. If the destruction of Sodom served more than one purpose, then I really can't tell you what it was off the top of my head. I'd have to think about it more.

Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
I think it was once asked on these forums how Satan became evil when he was perfect - without original sin - and had no one to tempt him. Since then, I've thought about it a little and here's what I have to offer...
Everyone who is apart from God - separate of motives and individualistic in their own desires - is able to choose that which is not supported by God. Satan did this. He was close to God. He was beautiful and wise, but he embraced foolishness because of his own beauty. All sin is foolishness. Because Satan was only close to God and was not a part of God, he could still sin.
Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." - John 5:19
Christ was unified with God and had no original sin in him. Therefore, he was able to live a life without sin and chose to do so. The angels were created by God and were, in that respect, part of God since everything comes from God. However, they were not of the same mind neccessarily as God and were therefore able to rebel. This is how it was with humankind as well. And this is how it will be until we are made Christ-like and become truly one with God (as I understand it). Until then, God lives in his children, but they have original sin and sometimes motives that conflict with God's desires for them. They are able to rebel still. But if they follow through with the choice that they made, I believe that the influence of God in their lives will constantly direct their free will to choose that which is beneficial to God as they will be a part of God. I have the free will to cut off my hand right now, but how likely is it that I am going to do that? It is neither necessary nor desired; and that's my idea of sin in the future.
So the person who is apart from God rather than a part of God may easily choose to do that which is not in God's interests. And that's what Satan did. He held himself in higher esteem than God. In rejecting God, he cut himself off from God in his own sin.

I don't hate Catholics as a group as I don't believe I hate anyone as a group (with the exception of "country artists" whom I think should be eradicated). However, I have seen and met many individuals of the Catholic faith whom have fed my general dislike of religion. Now I dated a Catholic girl for 4 years and her family (at least her mom and dad) went to Church pretty much every weekend. So I think I have a pretty good insight into some affairs of the Catholic faith.
The whole "forgiveness" angle they work for themselves is quite humorous. Example 1 -- Friend liked the wacky tabaccy and was a little promiscuous, she went to church to ask for forgiveness for her "sins." She felt this gave her a clean slate to work with the following week. Now I understand this is not representative of every follower, and it might hold true for other religions as well, but I saw this idea repeated over and over by quite a few people.
On the flip side I have seen the percieved "forgiveness" bring people joy and relief Example 2 -- My ex's mom is a teacher and I remember her having a really tough week one time with parents and kids where she had to yell. I remember her crying at church (one of the few times I went with them) from the relief she felt from asking for forgiveness and thinking "I am happy she feels better"
So as I mentioned, I don't hate Catholics but I find some of it's followers humorous as I am sure I would of any other religion's followers I chose to associate with. Practice whatever makes you feel better about yourself.

In my opinion, you don't need to ask for forgiveness of sins since you've already been forgiven now and for all time.
On the flip side I have seen the percieved "forgiveness" bring people joy and relief
Absolutely. In a round about way, then, it might be good to ask for forgiveness to clear your conscience even though God has already forgiven you. If you keep your conscience clear, then your body would remain healthier.
My ex's mom is a teacher and I remember her having a really tough week one time with parents and kids where she had to yell. I remember her crying at church (one of the few times I went with them) from the relief she felt from asking for forgiveness and thinking "I am happy she feels better"
If the kids and parents angered her enough to where she felt she had to yell, then they may've deserved it. I've noticed this with myself as well. I might like ot ask God for forgiveness for something just to ease my conscience. But if I find my motives are for that reason and not because I am repentant, then I usually don't ask.
Practice whatever makes you feel better about yourself.
Why not? As long as it doesn't conflict with God's desires for you and others, go ahead.
