I'm sure Blizzard doesn't worry about Warhammer. why would they? Blizzard is going 8,5 million subscribers strong, and its STILL growing. Why would they fear a company that peaked at 250k subscribers with its game?
But I too am confident that the next WoW expansion will be well worth it. I'm satisfied with Burning Crusade so far.WAR is a great challenger no discussion there. The winner isn't the one with the most amount of subscribers, WoW is the biggest bomb on that front ever. But WAR I know will be the next big thing that people will talk about.
I don't expect all too many to switch from WoW to WAR because WoW is a game on it's own and there are sooo many fanboys playing it who have put too much time in it they wouldn't ever dream of leaving it. No matter what game that comes.
No matter what happends WAR will not have a positive impact for Blizzard. Since they indeed are going to loose subscribers.Ofcourse the winner is the one with the most subscribers. when talking about the "Big thing" in a franchise, it means the game that is the most popular, the most played, and the one that received the most media attention, and WAR will be neither of those. WAR is not a challenger. Fantasy Warhammer setting isn't that popular among video gamers. WAR doesn't have the franchise of Warhammer, and Mythic doesn't have the company recognition of Blizzard. Millions of gamers were actually VERY excited about the announcement of the new alliance race in the Burning Crusade. Loads of gamers were waiting for blizzard to open its mouth and say which race will join the alliance. Only very few people cared when Mythic announced the races.
WAR will do fine, no doubt about that. I'm sure they will reach a nice 150k~250k subscribers, if not a few more. But it will always live in the shadow of World of Warcraft, just like every other MMORPG out there.
Interesting that a self proclaimed "vet" is comparing a TBR game, versus one that's over 2 years old now.
First off... War IS in fact a competitor. Comparing: Players currently playing a game waiting on an expansion vs. Nobody playing a game, and waiting on Initial release.
Second off... What do you do for a living that offers fortification to your "Fantasy Warhammer setting isn't that popular". ??
Third... World of Warcraft wasn't, in any comparison, as popular as it is now. Warcraft is easy... ergo it's success.
Last off... 150-250k subscribers.... I'll bet you it gets FAR FAR more than that. I've played WoW for 2 years now.
The majority of the xpac content is, for the most part, nothing new. Black Temple we can't even do that last 3 bosses because they're bugged beyond belief. You have no idea how many people playing wow are just waiting for something new to come out.
WOW = Waiting on Warhammer
My two cents = Grain of Salt, Pound of Sand, your choice.
Yeh and and I also hardly think it's like that 90% of the Warhammer Tabletop players are completely uninterested in videogames and doesn't own a computer in the first place :P

8.5 million is not the number of CURRENT subscribers. That number includes cancelled accounts, buddy passes, AND people who bought the game, but never subscribed.
That said Blizzard does not have to worry about WAR or AOC because there are a lot of very committed fans in WoW, and they will stick around.

Nobody ever seems to be able to say the correct number AND proof it at the same time. How can you be sure of that?

If your ready my posts correctly, you will see that I posted that WARHAMMER Fantasy is not as popular among video gamers as some would like to believe. none of the WARHAMMER RTS games were HUGE successes (of which one was published by EA, to get the EA = instant win rumor out of the room).
Well, if I have no idea how many people are just waiting for something new, then I'm sure you will be able to provide me with factual numbers, no?

Incorrect, please read the press releases carefully
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules..
The only credit Ill give Blizzard was a smooth launch on release day. TBC is a horrible excuse of an expansion, it fragments the players even more and trivializes all past achievements. New content should be available to all levels. As much as AO Shadowlands ruined that game, it offered something for every player and didnt trivialize past accomplishments (original raid content still gets raided commonly to this day still).

I am guessing you didn't play on Uther day 1 then, cause it was literal hell.
The server crashed numerous times, I literally had periods of time where I'd start to attack a mob and 5 minutes later it would show up dead at my feet. Uther throughout the past 2 years never really improved. It was one of the first servers and it was one of the worst. I can't give credit to Blizzard for a smooth launch.
How are they not dumb, they brought out a xpac which everyone NEEDS if you actually wanna keep up with everyone which means u you have to lvl again, and thats no fun. Once the XP came out, the first week, people quit the game (like myself) I got to 64 and I was like wtf. 70 is just gonna be like 60. Grind fight fight fight. I was actually looking forward to PvP, but arenas were the worst Idea ever. I cant stand PvE. I did a raid once and i was like, "Damn guys, this is the shittiest way to spend 6 hours" Tho people will agree. I would rather hang out with friends then slave over a comp, peeing in a empty 2 litre bottle you just drank and cry over the loots u did not get.
If a game doesnt have good PvP system in it, then I just quit and throw it. I neeeeeeddd a good PvP game, dont care on graphics just a good pvp game.
Blizzard has been a company that is very good at polish and presentation, and art, but pretty lazy when it comes to everything else for awhile now. Their expansions are always let downs too, especially since they lost the blizzard north team, basically most of us old blizzard fans felt that the blizzard north team is where the quality came from, the originality, and that old personnal blizzard touch we used to know so well.
Wow reminds me so much of warcraft 3 in how its presented; At first it seems really awsome, with endless potential, but the more you play the more you realize that its only skin deep, theres no real depth to it. Why so many players quit when they get to the end game content, there really isn't a whole lot there either way, and most of the content is just rehashes, it just looks alot nicer and is more accessible than in other games.
Is blizzard stupid? No, but after bill roper and his crew left blizzard, they seem to have shifted their focus from quality to marketing more than anything, and any old school blizzard fan thats played since the warcraft 2/diablo 1/starcraft days can see that now. The games are just missing that special touch they used to have. Compared to the competition, they are still a good company, but just because a game is better doesn't make it a good game either, its like asking someone would you rather eat old, rotting fruit or feces, obviously your going to say rotting fruit, but that doesn't mean it's gonna taste very good.
The sad part about it is, i have noticed that alot of WoW players are not only new to Blizzard, but to MMO's too. Not all WoW players are newbies, but a large amount are, and they made special effort to market to people who hadn't tried MMO's before. They did alot of advertising on battle.net for example in their RTS games, but didn't put nearly as much time into appealing to the existing MMO players. So in the end, it feels like a huge let down to me, because i know they could have done so much more with it, and it feels like so much wasted potential, but most of the players don't know any better. I guess the best way to still make alot of money even if your old fans are getting upset with you is to shift focus to new fans, which proved to me without a doubt that the old Blizzard is dead now, its all about marketing and tactics.
Blizzard is like EA now, only they actually try to make thier games have good polish and presentation, atleast at first glance. If you strip away the marketing tactics, asthetics, and public relations(basically the things that make a game seem good, not actually make it good) and blizzard and EA are very much the same.
