The only thing i can say when people are fired its a bad thing for them. Its a shame some gamers feel otherwise it only shows how selfish they are to wish something like that upon people or maybe because some of them are in the same situation they wish it upon others to be in that sistuation aswell. And then why 3 links all the same edit from the orginal link and all people rushing in predicting DOOM.

I can only say if its trhu i do hope sony's CEO gets fired aswell cause when he spoke about "BIG NEWS" i sortof read that as a possitive else i would expect him to say we have some "SAD NEWS"

Why is it Sad news for SOE? They've picked up Vanguard at fire-sale price, probably worth it for the art assets alone.

SOE has nothing to do with this, its Sigil firing them before they go Chapter 11.

I'm all for hating SOE.... Lord knows they deserve it.  But, this time they appear to be making a smart business move.

Wait for the buzzards to circle then swoop in and snatch up the scraps at bargain prices.  Fix it the cheapest they can and milk it like they do with every other POS game on their roster.  Classic.

The blame here lies at the top managers @ Sigil.  Not the big bad company waiting to scoop them up and CERTIANLY not the little folks @ Sigil.  This was their sweat & blood.

People losing their jobs is no laughing matter.   I just hope that one day we'll find out some truth about Vanguard and not the PR spin we've been fed for years now.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I wouldn't give SOE an entirely free pass.  Try this conspiracy theory on for size:  What if SOE (ie Smed) could see the trouble coming and refused to help Sigil knowing that the company could possibly go bankrupt and thus be snatched up dirt cheap?  If you start from the premise that SOE is evil, this seems a reasonable conjecture.

You see, you  don't have to forgive SOE that easily if you think about it long enough.

    I fail to see the conspiracy in that to be honest. It's probably near as damnit the way it played out. Game wasn't working too well, SOE refused to fund further forcing Sigil to release. It makes sense from a business POV for SOE. At this poiunt SOE are thinking 2 things;

    1) if it goes well then no need to change the business relationship

    2) if it goes pear-shaped buy the game cheap, either on low maintenance ala MxO or with some shrewd investiment.

I quit my VG sub last week but fully intented to re-sub in a few months. Depending on SOE hande this I'll need to re-asses. I'm thinking SOE might go MxO style on this title so as not to compete with EQ2.

Sad fucking day if you ask me

Sounds like a reasonable business practice to me really. I mean you enter into partnership with a cash-poor company (sigil), knowing that if they mess it up, you can buy them out cheap.

You have to remember that SOE helped Vanguard out when Microsoft dumped them. Without SOE, there would be no Vanguard. That they might have always had their eye on buying the game is only common sense.

  • PhifePhife Member Posts: 229
It's not unreasonable, given SOE's love of sub-par products.

The only truely sad thing here is, that many of them (if not all) will just migrate to other MMO dev companies and  proceed  to create the next MMO trainwreck with a "new" team.

Came across the above article.Wonder how true it is.

Who let them do that on the Sigil boards for years? Who gave them the expectation that doing that would be in harmony with the game's "Vision"? The Sigil moderators work for Brad. If he didn't endorse all that crap going on on their boards, he could have stopped it. Go back to WoW, should I, as I was told so many times? By golly I did! And that is the one thing I thank Brad for because I'm having a lot of fun.

Confirmation enough for me. Wow, that's terrible.
No - its a wonderful piece of news. I finally feel like my $85 were well spent in paying the guy who did the firing.

I think the people that are laughing it up and having a good time with this should also try to remember that alot of people just lost their jobs. Try to remember that time in your life and at least have a little heart and remeber that it's not such a great feeling.

On top of that, alot of these people put vast amounts of time, energy and passion into this project over the past 3+ years, they were let down by the people at the top just like we were. The least we can do is show a little damned class and maybe not take so much enjoyment from their fall?

I certainly wish them well and hope at least some of them get picked up by SOE, if that's indeed the plan for now.

I don't want them touching that damnable company personally, they should get good stable jobs with respectable companies like NCSoft or Bioware.

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

Hear hear. I know from personal perspective as a small business owner that it's really fucking hard to build something you believe in. It takes vast amounts of personal energy, not to mention financial risk, stress and a lot of other related troubles. Sure you're doing it to earn a few euros at the end of the day, but trying to build a vision is simply so potentially soul-destroying, that its a wonder we humans ever innovate anything.

Even though it may seem like madness, I'm sure even Brad must have had reasons for why he did things as he did. Not to defend him though. If half the shit I've read today is true, then he's a moron of a manager, that needs to re-think his future career choices.

Good luck to the hard working peeps at Sigil, and grats for trying to build a vision.

sigil's people didnt really deserve to keep their jobs this game has been hugely downsized and even then they couldnt finish it.

Uhh, no, you are just another dumbass who likes to lay all the problems of the world at one person's feet.

Well, I have my doubts about all of this, but it's looking like it may be true.

If it is, a new flood will leave the game, and the game will be dead...

It's a shame that such a good game, flawed as it is, would be destroyed like this... I guess we'll see today...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

We are only hearing part of the tale but in my opinion you can't blame anyone but McQuaid and Butler who sat on their thrones eating grapes while their kingdom burned below. If the blogs are true then they weren't even in the office to see it burn.

I feel for the people that lost their jobs but alot of good things are coming. Maybe you can get on with SOE to make DC Heroes. At least it will probably be properly managed and have a descent release. Blizzard is hiring and you might could be a part of Starcraft Online. Whatever happens you will be in a better place than VG soon so keep your fingers crossed.

As for McQuaid he definitely just needs to retire. He has no business going anywhere near another game. If anyone is stupid enough to hire him, at least make him sign a gag contract to keep him from posting his Barnum and Bailey hype all over the place. If he indeed spent the last two to three months riding motorcycles and drinking beer while his staff worked like dogs over a game he had already given up on then I hope he gets to read every negative "I told you so" article and have nightmares about WOW every single night.

In some sense this feels bad but I believe it is for the best for the MMORPG community. Every game out there right now is paying attention to this trainwreck. AoC and WAR and other MMORPGs to come will have more polish and publishers will have more patience and not rush half done products out the door. One day we will have a 3rd gen game that offers something new and wonderful just like Brad promised over and over. He can at least think that he played a small part in that development by showing them an exact plan of "What not to do".....
