No one would ever accuse me of being a Vanboi. That being said, I think it is more than possible for SOE to resurrect Vanguard and turn it in to a pretty good game. Why? Because it can attract a lot of players that EQ2 cannot.
It sounds great, so great in fact, I pitty those who canceled - Some deluded SWG fanboi who pities me. I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too. 09f911029d74e35bd84156c5635688c0
I understand that it sucks for people to lose their jobs, but at least some of them are incompetent and deserve to be canned. It's a bummer for the chick that answers the phone, and the dude that mops up at night.... but anyone who put their paws on the game code can use an occupational re-roll.
Does anyone remember the "TRUTH" about Vanguard thread by Brad McQuaid? In it and similar threads he states that SOE is merely the publisher, and that they became the publisher so that Sigil could have more control. I said at the time that was a pack of lies. So how is it these terminations are happening? How is it that SOE is running the show? What further "big news" does the *cough* publisher have this week?
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Without the Sigil Dev Team, and in the hands of SOE, it is...
With the Sigil Dev Team they failed; in a big way. Sigil had no track record outside of an overrated Game Designer named Brad McQuaid and his incompetent Lackey, Jeff Butler.
SOE has a proven track record of cleaning up Brad's mess in Everquest1 and changing course on Everquest2 to make it a fine game. They will not put millions of dollars into it because they would never get that money back with VG's 35k Subscribers (and decreasing).
However, it is good to see that the spin from the Vanbois continues. Keep the ball rolling. I am still waiting to hear more how the Subs are increasing. That one is my favorite.
Please, stop the spin I'm getting sick!
Seriously, Sigil's Dev Team didn't fail. The game is a blast for many, and you can't blame it's early launch on the Dev Team.
SOE's ONLY proven track record is in disappointing players & abusing them. They have EQ, EQ2, Planetside & the 2 largest IP's in MMO's (Star Wars & Matrix), and have LOST subs over the last 3 years. They're now #3 of MMO company total subs behind Blizzard (who has ONE game) & NCSoft (who have 4 games). To even suggest they would have a clue regarding VG is a joke, looking at their track record that is...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
Of course. They apparently all got fired because they did great!
You can't blame the Dev Team for the management launching 6 months to a year early.
I can't? And why was it 6 months to a year behind? Why does it have so many bugs? Why are there so many performance issues? You bet I can blame them, although I blame others more.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
While I don't think the employees are completely at fault here, to say that the programmers are completely guilt-free is a bit to generous for me.
Having read through the blogs, I can honestly say McQuaid and Butler are definitely responsible in large part for Vanguard's failure, but then again, I've been saying McQuaid is worthless all along. Anyone who's busy writing the apologies and things he wrote, it wasn't hard to tell he never played his own game. That's why he never gave specific examples of gameplay problems that he hoped to address. Instead, he'd always elaborate on expansion pack ideas, and new marketing methods.
Even though he is quite possibly the most worthless manager in the industry (in my opinion, of course), some blame lies on the Sigil employees' shoulders. The game was still buggy, the engine was never optimized, there were still a lot of problems in general. Those are things the employees could have fixed, even without Butler and McQuaid.
Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for these guys to an extent. They definitely got treated like dogs by one of the bigger schmucks in the business. It's a shame they're getting ousted with such little compassion, but at the end of the day, the end result is still their work.
I wish them the best, I truly do, but perhaps they should be working on smaller scale projects before they start out trying to revolutionize the genre.
Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

This comes from someone operating another affiliate site. I unfortunately cannot reveal the name at this time:
[13:54] XXXX: Well I talked to a developer, he didnt want me to say his name, though.
[13:54] XXXX: But he basically said this was all true
[13:54] XXXX: Brad hasnt shown up to work in like 8 months
[13:55] XXXX: Jeff Butler apologized to them yesterday in the parking lot for the game not being as good as they hoped. he said he'd help them with references and what not for their resumes
[13:55] XXXX: Basically they fired over 60 people yesterday, about 30 will stay on and develop Vanguard at Sigil.

[13:56] XXXX: And apparently the guy is a dumbass
[13:56] DCpunk: So, basically, as soon as SOE became co-publisher, he stopped going in to work
[13:57] XXXX: SOE become copublisher a year ago
[13:57] XXXX: But shortly after I guess, yeah
[13:58] XXXX: Nino and a few others are moving on to SOE to develop this new MMO that hasnt been announced yet
Of course. They apparently all got fired because they did great!
You can't blame the Dev Team for the management launching 6 months to a year early.
The game didn't launch early.. It was delayed at least a year. You can blame the devs for being over a year or two behind in development, no?
I'm not saying the Dev's weren't behind, or that their perfect. What I am saying is that EVERYONE knew the game was being launched early, and they did it anyway. I begged on the Beta forums to hold the game for 6 months, or it may end up failing, as did hundreds of others.
Look at my posts and you'll find many expressing frustration with the games performance, as well as other issues. I've never given the Dev's a pass, but if the game had been held until ready it wouldn't have come to this.
The dev's may have been behind, but the fault IMO lies with the Managers for a) not keeping the team on track & b) launching a game they knew wasn't ready.
I just can't believe they couldn't have gotten more financing, especially for such a hyped game so close to launch...

Yeah, I am not very forgiving after the experiences I had dealing with the Devs in beta. The attitude was the same as we got from SOE when the CU and NGE hit SWG. They are right, we are wrong. They are professionals, and we simply wouldn't be able to understand why they make their decisions, but don't worry.. they know what's best for us.
I know it isn't all of them... but did you ever post much in the crafting beta forums? Every other day Silius threw a hissy-fit and lashed out at someone for posting criticisms of the crafting system. Their belief that they know better than us what we enjoy is as much of a problem with this game as the early launch was. Really, running smooth this game still isn't what most people are looking for. It's a tedious, unrewarding grind-fest that punishes you at every opportunity. The systems that really get people excited about the game, crafting, housing boats... ill conceived and poorly executed. People, including myself, were in love with the idea of what the game could be, but generally unimpressed with what it was.

yep yep slathered in awesomesauce!
He is probably interviewing with SOE today and/or getting references and the like from Butler and unavailable for posting.
Here is the summary of what really happened and I’ll try to keep it simple cause apparently some people need that.
Sigil raised a lot of money for Vanguard but they were overambitious. The word was too large, the mechanics too complicated and the graphics to aggressive for the Unreal engine.
This caused the game to be buggy and far behind schedule so Microsoft bailed on the project.
Smed helps Sigil out, in part because he was Brads friend and in part because he saw a business opportunity. However, anyone who thinks he got SOE any more involved then as a publisher at this point needs to share whatever it is they are smoking. SOE would have deliberately kept their distance so they didn’t accept any of Vanguards liabilities if the game failed, which was looking like a strong possibility at that point.
The money SOE gave them ran out and Sigil had no choice but to launch Vanguard prematurely. SOE would have been focused on keeping their liability and therefore their involvement ot a minimum and would not have offered them any more money.
Because of these problems and the fact that it was fundamentally designed for a smaller niche type audience Vanguard flopped spectacularly.
In all likelihood SOE has stepped in and bough the game code, IP, and any other assets directly related to Vanguard for a low price, not much more then a million or two. With no game left, Sigil proceeds to shut down it’s operations.
The money SOE paid for Vanguard and related assets will be used to pay off any creditors in an order specified by bankruptcy laws, including the severance pay for the employees. Interestingly SOE itself could be one of the larger creditors and be near the front of the line for payment. Anything left over will be returned to investors, including Brad and Jeff themselves at a rate of pennies on the dollar.
SOE will hire a new dev staff for Vanguard, but it will probably be much smaller then the hundred or so Vanguard had before. This staff will likely consist of a lot of former Sigil developers.
I'm not saying the Dev's weren't behind, or that their perfect. What I am saying is that EVERYONE knew the game was being launched early, and they did it anyway. People, including myself, we in love with the idea of what the game could be, but generally unimpressed with what it was.
I think our views are flavored by our experiences in Beta. I developed great relationships with certian Devs, and they would listen. Having gone through the SWG experience myself, I would have walked if I felt they were being elitist.
I rarely dropped in on the Crafting Forums, since our Guild divided Forums between ourselves, although that guildie did seem to feel a bit more frustrated then the rest of us.
I agree, parts of the game were developed for the Dev's, not the players. It's just sad with all of the potential this game had, and still has. It has been getting better every patch, I truely am heartbroken...
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

It's a tedious, unrewarding grind-fest that punishes you at every opportunity. The systems that really get people excited about the game, crafting, housing boats... ill conceived and poorly executed.
In fact, forget the SWG!!!!
