Originally posted by 0k21 yes yes, people who don't play WoW hate it because of how successful it is and how everyone's saying positive things about it *rolls eyes* stop living in fluff land, I'm not saying I hate WoW, I think it's a good game, but as people have said it's just more of the same, Blizzard got lucky because of the SWG mass exodus and how no one had anything else to turn to, not only that the huge marketing campaign that was pulled managed to get the interest of people other than the hardcore MMORPG players. What I hate is the fact that it IS just more of the same and I'm hating Blizzard and the business practices it puts into play, I.E crappy customer service which are just really people playing automated messages over, no real communication from devs, community managers are a joke and so are roleplaying servers and more recently the fact that world of warcraft have been making deals with a credit card company.
There are better ways to make money and that's called making a better game, not throwing money at useless trading card games or trying to make deals with banks, the way I see it, deals like this make the developers lose respectability not only from the games industry but from the game itself, World of Warcraft isn't a game anymore, it's just a franchise and the MMORPG is a part of it, there are other games out there that get along just fine without these ridiculous marketing schemes. Half Life 2 is a perfect example, valve, instead of making off with the cash they got from half life 1, decided to go ahead and create an entire new game engine for half life 2 this made it even more popular than ever and they did it all without the crazy marketing Blizzard tried not only that, they topped it off by releasing a good quality game that people enjoyed as much as the original.
the answer is yes.... and that is what my post was about, you were crying becuase blizzard were making money and I simply pointed out that that is what companies do.. all companies.. its their #1 driving force.
ok first i have to say i never liked WoW (played it for a month never really got into it, seemed to simplistic so i canceled)
but nevertheless i do not think it is dying. it is hitting a slow path but im sure blizzard will do something and numbers will go back up.
Even if people go to other games like WAR or LOTRO or POTBS or whatever... i am sure a great load will still remain subed to WoW, just to say can play whenever they have the urge to go back...
i know of alot of my guildies who no longer play SWG but are still subed to it. they go in once in a while to check the game, sometimes they get a craving and go back.
same for EQ1, i am subed to EQ1 but play only sometimes. cuz i still think its fun. same thing will hapen to WoW. it will not die but unless blizzard does something it will not go back to its HIGH POPULARITY.
people will get bored and say they quit but after a month or 2, they will go back and take taste again,
so who cares if WoW is dying or not... the fact remains that it will live for a very long time and i will have to see, to my misery, some WoW fanboys say how WoW is the greatest thing that has hapened in the world since the wheel. i dont know why ... but i think girls and girlfriends will beat any MMORPG anytime anyday...
so look out the window, look outside(hell go outside) and live!
im off to lunch OUTSIDE with my GIRLFRIEND now (bon apetit to all)
lol these threads are hilarious, I'm not here to defend wow but until i see some servers being closed or merged then this "wow is dying" is just a load of crap.
hate the game all you want but no matter how much you whine or say the game is dying, it is not going away. you people will be saying the same crap for years to come lol.
just play the game you enjoy and don't worry about what wow does.
WoW is finally DIEING! People are getting bored of the high level grinds, and about time. I quit a long time, but recently i have been seeing people quitting day and day. What could be the cause of this? A horrible expansion pack that only added in two lazy races and one big chunk of land? The Next Gen MMO's ? Whatever it may be, and maybe you've been seeing is a lot lately, but people have been complaining about WoW regardless of the reasons.
Being that I quit this game a few months ago, I have no intention of "defending it", but.
In my opinion, based on why I quit, people are just finally getting bored of it. I had been playing since 2005 and didn't throw in the towel because it pissed me off, or the content wasn't good, or I didn't like the community, I quit it because I was required to.
That doesn't change the fact that I have had little to no interest in playing it again. People are realizing that this game just takes ALOT of time out of peoples' lives, and they are ready to let it go. They got in their play time and now it's done.
I quit with over 7 Level 60's I was working on, I wanted to gear up my Orc Warlock and Orc Warrior just as much as anyone else did. I had been a part of the same guild for about 7 months. I was coming on every day at the same time for raiding, it became a job more than just a fun effort. That is why it was time to quit this game. I hate Blizzard, I dislike WoW, but I hardly think the expansion was a reason for people quitting.
The expansion didn't add one hunk of land and two lazy races. Maybe you don't realize just how much WORK goes into creating a game. With that "hunk" of land came all these different little worlds. Every map, every mob, ever area, ever texture for the Outlands had to be sketched and then rendered bit by bit. Every single peice of armor had to be three-dimensionally rendered to fit onto the bodies of those so-called "lazy races". The new mounts had to be created and rendered as well. New dungeons, a new battleground arena, just pages upon pages of new updated content. And you want to say Blizzard is lazy? Who the hell will be lazy with a game worth millions if not BILLIONS. You might think about just what it takes to put together that little expansion, because if you think it was just some half arse effort, then I wish I could put in so little effort for millions of dollars within one month. Just imagine, that expansion game out for 40.00 a pop the first night, I was one of the people at Game Stop at 12 in the morning waiting for her copy. I know there was easily 100 customers in that ONE store alone, and we have 3 Game Stops where I live. Imagine only 3 Billion of the over 6 Million players they have that went out and got that expansion.
Do you really think they care about the one person quitting a day? Or even ten? Twenty? One Hundred?! No, they have what they needed.
I wouldn't say it's dying....but I do believe once a good game comes out Blizzard will see a lot of people cancelling, everyone I know is either quitting, thinking about quitting or just waiting around for Warhammer/Age of Conan. Sure my little piece of WoW isn't that big, it's just me and my guild and then some friends outside the guild, and all the other players that have posted similar thoughts to mine, whether here or on the WOW forums, their group of people they know isn't that big either. But I have a hard time believing that only the people that post that they feel this way are the only ones that feel this way.
WOW has been a great game, and it still is, but after having played for 2years and having had to deal with numerous bad decisions and unneeded nerfs (in my opinion, others probably liked the changes, but they didn't increase the fun of the game in my opinion), it just isn't that much fun anymore. One of my friends keeps comparing how Blizzard has been making decisions lately to how SOE/LA handled SWG, nerf nerf nerf, drastic change to something that has been in game for +2years, nerf nerf nerf, etc. And I would have to agree with that assessment...WOW may not be dying, but it cannot last forever--especially when they make decisions like they've been doing lately.
It is the MMO with the largest number of subscribers and their population is growing steadly
This is how it works. 2 people stop playing wow, then 1 person starts playing wow. To blizzard that equals 3 subscribers even tho 2 have actually left. Get it? Understand? Good.
I agree with a previous poster. I think the US subcriptions are on a downward slide, but the game remains very popular in Asia. What's funny about that though, is that Blizzard makes far more money per subscriber from the US and Europe than they do from subscribers from Asia. So, a loss of players on our side can have a more dramatic affect on Blizzard's income than some may realize.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

I don't remember there being any hype for vanguard. If there was I never heard of it. It wasn't until a few months after it came out I actually heard of it or the first time. Vanguard was fail from GO.

WOW isn't dying, but the number of people getting fed up/tired of it increases daily. Yesterday I found out my old guild gave up on trying to juggle 40 people through Kara and all the other "fun" of TBC and about 15 of the core team quit WOW (including the GM) to go play LotRO until WAR comes out.
Their story isn't unique, another friend confirmed her guild of 2 years (and 1/2 thru Naxx before TBC) also imploded and has to reform as a much smaller entity that is struggling with the new content.
TBC... a terrible expansion in the long run, (at least for the legacy raiders) but that's for another thread......

IMHO WoW will be going strong for a minimum of 10 more years - don't forget, Bliz plans several more expansions, and with each one, many of those who have left WoW will return to try them. And, as the MMO industry keeps expanding, WoW will always be a natural choice for new players. Friends, there are three absolutes in our world; death, taxes, and WoW.

Outdated?? Wtf?
i wont even comment that one as every single thing points the opposite way..
Please! Haters! Atleast get yourself good arguments.
one thing i will say is this, while i do not like wow myself, i do not believe it is dieing yet, but one thing is true is that wow is outdated. It's outdated in everyway, heck the graphics were outdated the day it came out. Gameplay wize was already outdated as there was nothing new in the first place.

WoW = Waiting on Warhammer
1) It isn't on any of the top 10 PC sales lists for a few moths in a row.
2) Blizzard releases it's second MMO.
3) There is another new hot MMO that JoeneverheardofMMOs starts to play.
