EverQuest II being a huge success?

    Yeah right.

Well, it's not like a total disaster like Vanguard: Saga of Heroes or a big failure like Dungeons and Dragons Online but a huge success?

    No way, José!

I will tell you why, lots and lots of bugs in the game when I played it in 2005 which resulted in massive "I quit posts" on the forums.

It went so bad that the forums became heavily moderated againts any criticism towards the game (threads deleted by the mods) and when that didn't help they made new forums.

Oh, and World of Warcraft hasn't moved from 8.5 million subs to 9 million subs in months, you figure it out.

It may actually be below 8 million subs right now but would Blizzard willingly admit that?

How to make a thread gaining lots of responses- mention WoW. If you mention its losing subscription levels or dying- bonus responses.

just wait , cause WOW main customer  is China (70 + %). Its now against the law for PVP and to play more then 3 hours a day...

all i have to say is... WoW is forever.

No other mmo will destroy wow, and wow will never die.  It's that simple saying otherwise is rediculous...

And just for the record, age of conan is going to be a flop like vanguard =P sorry to disapoint the fans of this game.. but giving a mmorpg mechanics of a action game from 5 years ago isn't going to make it wonderful.

WoW dies when WaR is born. WaR dies when WoW2 is born.

When the realms stop looking so bloody empty i will assume the game isn't dying. And when their arn't so many people telling me in game and on the forums how they are going to warhammercraft or age of conan, then i will believe the game isnt dieing. And start believing that the mmo market cant exceed the OK gameplay of wow.
Um, are we playing the same game?  The realms are very populated, with the exception of a few.  And those few still have more people than you will find on any other major MMO.

Also, never go to WoW's forums to get your info.  Everyone their wines.  And i doubt that even 30% of the WoW players actually go on the forums.  So you're getting your info from a small portion of the WoW population.

And the 4 or 5 gold farmers..LOL, are you kidding me?

The Rabid fanboy speaks the truth.

Now im off to rate wow straight 1's as ive never played it before so that if i ever decide to play it ill re-rate it after ive tried it

In the beginning there was UO and EQ... we used to say neither of them could die, they were just too good...

Even the people that play WoW today cannot agree how good it is... because it is not. There are better games. WoW is just the most widespread. Today. Now. That will change.

When the 8-track came out, we thought it was amazing.

    But the Cassette replaced it.

We thought that would last FOREVER.

    Until CDs.

    But THOSE will last FOREVER!!!

    Not. We now use MP3s.

Man, things change. WoW WILL DIE. And I do not think it will even last the way UO and EQ have... but both of those are effectively dead for all actual definitions...

    Nothing is forever.

"Nothing Gold can Stay"- Robert Frost  I like WoW but to be honest, i know it wont last forever, I see it having a long lifesapn though beucase 8.5 million people dont pack up and leave at once it would be a gradual decay.

    Nothing is forever.

I was being over dramatic and totally not being serious to express my point that, the game despite it being "attacked viscously by new games which will drain the life blood out of it" still remains massively on top.  I figured one silly expression for another.  I've heard it all before vanguard will destroy wow!  lotro will destroy wow! roma victor! seriously... i'm going to be a wow fanboy on these forums just so the "Wow sucks, ya im uber cool wow blows! ya i rock!" people ar annoyed, despite the fact that i quit wow and am not going back, untill the next xpac

See the thing is, if you look at the mmorpg market there is a huge gap between wow, and every other mmo.  EQ is still one of the MOST populated mmos compared to all the "killer games" which were to challenge wows millions but are really only hurting a ancient game like eq while wow prospers.  hell WoW is one of the/is the most selling game of all time.  And when they announce the next expansion everyone and their cousin will be like /omg i gotta try that. and all the wow haters etc will play it yet continue to bad mouth it on the forum because they are trying to be cool, and hating wow is cool.

WoW will NOT die in the sense of it being killed.  However it is very likely it will be replaced by wow2.

Nothing is forever. WoW is good. Its not even up for debate, its received the best reviews, most awards, and the biggest playerbase. saying "But X game is better" is just your opinion, of just one person who's proffesion probably has nothing to do with gaming and only plays games for a hobby.

Also, I don't  remember anyone ever said the things you mentioned would never die.

But that aside, there is quite a big difference between a game like EQ and UO and WoW. EQ peaked at 400k subscribers, WoW is now at 8 million subscribers. The difference between Lineage and Everquest was 2,5 million subscribers, with Lineage being the most popular mmorpg in the world with 3 million active subscriber and Everquest being the runner up with 400k active subscribers, both peaked at roughly the same time, so I can compare those two.

Todays most popular MMORPG is WoW with 8 million subscribers. the runner up is Lineage with around 1 million subscribers. that is a difference of 7 million subscribers. and thats the difference, WoW is much bigger for its time then Everquest or Lineage was at its time. Will WoW die? Sure, one day, but it will defintely last much, much longer then UO, EQ and Lineage.

The only thing that will kill WoW is time..

Remember, WoW is a Fisher-Price (AKA Easy-Mode) MMO, and plus the fact that friends of friends are playing mainly due to the easy-mode of the game.  And that appeals to the new-to-MMO public due to its simplicity with its interface, functionality and classes. Also, the low system requirements compared to VG or LOTRO also plays into WoW's favor.

The sad thing that we're seeing, is that a majority of new games that have come out or will be released soon, is that they are using WoW as the cookie-cutter of MMOs (Sorry it is), and trying to get a piece of WoW's glory. And personally, I don't ever seeing that happen.

And just to state, I was a WoW player since beta and just cancelled my account this week.

freebass...it will eventually...maybe not with WAR and AoC but eventually...two things are certain though and they are:
    1. something (be it time or new MMOs) will kill WoW...nothing can deny the inevitable
    2. there will be no WoW2
  • devilbanedevilbane Member Posts: 103
If they made a WoW2 it would hurt nothing except WoW...

I recall how EQ2 basically cut most of our guilds in half... half the people went to EQ2, half stayed... ALOT came back, because EQ2 sucked... really.... REALLY... badly... but it still impacted EQ in a big way. As a company the LAST thing you want to do is confuse your subscribers, or compete with yourself.

Blizz has said "NO WoW 2" numerous times.

    @Gameloading

    @Bladen

The big issue with WoW that insiders are reviewing, and comparing to EQ:

When Ruins of Kunark, the first EQ expansion hit... population JUMPED UP in a huge way.

By the time Planes of Power hit, EQ was in it's prime.

Planes of Power was the FOURTH expansion... and EQ was GROWING throughout.

It did not see it's first real peak and decline until after Gates of Discord... the 7th expansion...

It's 14th expansion was released a few weeks ago. The numbers have been mostly stable for the last 2 years...

Okay now lets compare this with WoW... it hit it's peak 3 weeks after TBC was released... and has been eroding slowly ever since.

YES it is a very slow erosion. No WoW is not going to be dead anytime soon. But anyone looking at the difference between EQ's continual rise for the first 5 years, and seeing the expansions INCREASE numbers constantly.... then seeing WoW's numbers DECENT just after the expansion....

    do the math...

In addition, the numbers are deceptive. There were people back then that got a computer JUST to play UO or EQ... some even got a computer for Baldur's Gate. However, these days PCs are common. I have YET to meet anyone buying their first PC JUST to play WoW... and I am a PC tech, all I DO is build and repair computers. I have ALOT of clients that have me build a REPLACEMENT computer with WoW in mind... but never anyone asking for a first PC just to play WoW... it is mostly people that already have computers... and there are ALOT MORE of those today than there were in 1999.

July 2004 EQ hit his prime 550k since than it lost players realy fast, it have now 170k, lots of servers are dead, and many were merged, but 170k is a good number, 4 years to start losing players, and not like you say, a stady comunity, it is faling realy fast.

We have no prove that WoW have less than 8.5M subs, i gave you a prove that it is geting many new subs on my Original Post, heven if it starts to lose players at same rate EQ lost it will take 20+ years befor it gets closed.

Yes, I'll agree with you to the point that a game will surpass WoW in time, but only when WoW has gotten old or whatever and the player base leaves.

Remember, MMOs are in a "trendy" phase.. Its trendy to play WoW or MMOs cause everyone else is doing it. IMO, WoW made MMOs popular and also brought them more so to the forefront than any other MMO to date. EQ was known, but nothing compared to WoW. And like all trends, they will pass and soon become retro.

I can see no game ever surpassing WoW's numbers in history, which is sad but its the current state of where we and people are today and not tomorrow. Sure, there will be a large number of MMO players still playing, even after WoW goes away, but some of the WoW population will not play another MMO, simply due to it not being a trend nor them being a gamer / MMOer / Regular Computer User / ect ect..

And I agree.. there will never be a WoW2.. Blizzard is very smart at corporate and business decisions, and they know that this simply a trend that they are milking.

what self-respecting game company would admit that kind of thing?
