Indeed it is. I find it particularly amusing the "I will play" votes outnumber the "I won't play votes" greatly on both of these polls I've seen here so far. So much for the great SOE boycotter's.

Ill check it out if they have a free trial period. Then if its good ill stick on it. Lets just hope they wont go for a freak-up streak like they did with starwars online.

people that dont give this game a look strictly because of soe are completely and utterly off their rocker!

Yes..I will..Hating on SOE is just silly, anymore.

  • obiiobii Member UncommonPosts: 804

After playing Uo for almost 9 years I am used to some abuse and doubt anything SOE does can be as bad as EA did with UO.

So I will try it and play it, if it is any good

I also think the title may be in trouble as they've been in development for ever it seems.

      So will PotBS stumble?

PotBS started off as an indie mmorpg and theyve been adding new gameplay elements to it as time goes on, so the reason behind pushing the release date back was to include more content.  Its gone from a mmo naval combat simulator made by a small indie developer to a fully fledged mmorpg that will run with the big dogs.

It really doesn't seem like there is much there. I haven't looked into it in depth because I'm really not interested. My friends keep pestering me to try it, so I probably will. I have been surprised in the past though.

I can usually find enough fun in ANY game to keep me going for a month and I consider that to be worth the price of the client minus the cost of a free month. Every current MMORPG that I've played fails to have the depth that keeps me playing, but I admit I might be jaded.

1 Monthers: EQ2, COH (at release), COV (at release), MxO (but went back later for a couple months), Vansuck, Suckwars Galicrap, DDO, GW, RYL, Second Life (hehe) and probably some others I can't remember. With the exception of RYL, I think I got my money's worth from the clients.

These days I write more code than I do game, so I haven't played anything in a few months. Nothing, either here or upcoming,  is exciting enough to make me miss it.

If I had to bet money on it, I'd say that PotBS will be a comfy small game with a modest fan base (maybe 2/3 EVE if it is good?). This is assuming (and this is a big one) that the release goes well, the game plays well enough on most PCs, that the balance is OK, that the grief level is very low, there is enough content to satisfy average gamers for a month, and that there are not crippling game bugs.

I think churn will be a problem, as the concept isn't fantasy or sci-fi, which most people seem to like. It also hinges on pirates, which are fun in the short term, but a little "arr! matey!" goes a damned long way.

Plus the sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean suck cumulatively worse than the first one, and that pisses me off.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: I think it'll be "alright" barring train-wrecks, but will have to morph into something more to keep players interested and new blood coming in.

  • I don't see where SOE is an issue either way.

Unless you are on your 2.356th day of hating SOE because it's cool to hate SOE.

Have you read anything about the game at all?

    FLS didn't "crawl" to anyone.

They mae a very sound buissness choice. They went with a company that for all practicle purposes is the best at what the want them to do, distribution(and all that goes with that i.e. advertising, billing, etc.) and that is all that FLS wants from them and that is all they are getting from them. SOE will ahve absolutly nothing to do with the game itself other then promoting it and getting it out to the world.

It would be like you favorite local band that has a very nice following and they play in their home town alot and make a decent living on it, but they decide they would like to share their music with the rest of the world, so they find a huge company that has the resources to get thier music out, but when they negotiate on the contract they stick to thier guns and keep FULL creative control.

Now I don't like what SOE did to SWG either, and I never play EQ, but from what I have seen the only thing they ever screwe up was SWG (granted they screwed that one up really really huge) SOE had nothing to do with the demise of VG that was all Sigil's poor management SOE was just there to pick up the pieces and score on an IP that has alot of potential for very cheap.

I think FLS choice was a great one, I mean who better to help get the greatness that will PotBS out to the world. Means more little people for my dirty pirate to smash and rob.

But these are just my opinions you don't have to like, you are more then welcome to hate them, cause in the end I could care less what anyone thinks, after all it is a game.

  • One question to all those SOE boycotters out there, how many of you own a sony playstation, or some kind of sony eltronic device?

May not be the same division but in the end it is all the same company.

    Just curious.

  • DracusDracus Member Posts: 1,449

One example (and there are more examples) the electronic divisions of Sony offer refunds or replacements for defected electronic devices or products in which customers are unsatisfied with.

    And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

Did the SWG Terms of Service state anything like that Dracus?  OR, did they say something more along the lines of "We reserve the right to do wtf ever we want whentf ever we want, if you are okay with that please push Accept and send us your money." ???

The fact that anyone feels they are owed anything from a SOE for SWG is mind boggling to me...

  • DracusDracus Member Posts: 1,449

    Key word: "owe."

I have never used such a term.

What I have stated is there should means to bring back dissatisfied customers and to mitigate the perception of the "stigma" associated to SOE.  A company should never need to consider "taking lumps" for a partner.

Forum serach function isn't working the way I want it to but maybe you are right, maybe you have never typed the exact word "owe" but it's stil la fine line from the things you have been saying.  "They should offer" IS something you have said, pretty damn close imo.

I still don't agree with you as you and those that feel the same way you do are still the vocal minority regardless of how big you'd like to think your group is.  When compared to the rest of the what, 10-15 MILLION people in the MMO market how much do you think companies like SOE are worried about losing a handful of people that "won't ever touch a GAME that SOE has something to do with?"  Well, you already know, you like to say that after blah blah years they have done nothing blah blah...  Yep, that's how concerned they are.  And I don't blame them.

Well since u and most SOE haters wont play teh game... that´ll save me and my m8s alot of  "Waahhh" right there tbh

TBFH, I cant believe ppl go from forum to forum bashing SOE year after year

    * noboby will stop playing SOE games because of your posts. you're not costing SOE millions of bucks in converted SOE haters cancelling subs.

    * you are missing out on some average/good (maybe great even, depends alot on who u ask) games by not playing anything SOE has touched.

    * you will not, never ever get an apology from SOE of any kind because, incase u still dont get it after years of posting hate... they dont give a F*CK.

so for your own good, drop teh hate. play something else (or have a shot at RL whydontya). its not worth your time coming to every SOE forum spewing hate

Hmm.  Time to bring this one back to the top again just for the humor of it.

    YAR ftw imo!

I hate SOE with a vengeance, LA even more. But...  since the Golden days of Pirates on the Commodore 64 / Amiga 500 I'm inexplicably drawn towards this particular game type. I'll have to check out the reviews, although I really want to be there from the start.

Open Beta ftw imo.  That is going to be my deciding factor regardless of how pumped I am about this game being "the one"

Same thing I did with Vanguard, I thought "Man, this is gonna be the shit!"  Played the Open Beta for about 4 hours total...  And that was that, never touched it again...

As far as SOE and them being a demon from the bowels of hell I blame Lucas Arts for the SWG debacle. I preorded EQ2 and it was jacked on release but after a period of time SOE took customer input and changed the game for the better. Now EQ2 may not be many peoples idea of a great time but it is a solid game with most kinks worked out in it. In fact it is probably as solid than most offline rpg's (daggerfall, thief and morrowind bugs come to mind).

I hated SOE for what they did to my SWG...then after a while I went back to EQ2 and found it to be fun and much, much better than release. This got me thinking...if SOE turfed SWG but is great with EQ2 then maybe it was someone elses fault. Now a two years later and from the Austin Game conference to posts it is clear the SOE had nothing to do with the NGE but to implement and code it. LA came down on them and most left because the could not stay with the horrible changes the NGE brought. VG SoH was not SOE but, and it has been well documented, internal crud and horrible upper level management that sent it into the pits of doom.

As far as I am concerned SOE will do okay with PotBS, at least I hope so and I will give it a whirl and to be honest I am a bit pumped about PotBS.

I put maybe but it has nothing to do with SOE just not sure this game is for me.

In My Opinion, take a look at this thread: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/136530

And then view the results here: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/136707

If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about wether you should be checking this game out or not, then I have no idea what may convince you to do so...

  • ScriarScriar Member Posts: 772

Of course, i have been looking forward to this game for just over a year now, i wont change my mind just because of a few bad experiences with SOE. And even if they do mess up the game, it still looks like a good time filler till something else comes out lol

I don't see the correlation between the two threads and making an individual decision about playing a SOE game or not, unless you are suggesting that people should be sheep.

Also if you don't think losing 25% of the people who were going to try PotBS before the announcement is significant, then  you don't realize how much revenue that represents.
