WoW is like The Beatles

AnnekynnAnnekynn Member Posts: 1,437

Before anyone gets their panties up in a knot, this isnt a flame, just something funny I ran into (and if this is old, bite me) that I felt like sharing:

http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/8701

“WoW is The Beatles who changed music forever. You can’t be the Beatles; they already exist. You can’t copy them. If you try, you become The Monkees. You’ve got no chance. We’re not The Beatles. We’re Led Zeppelin. We’re very Heavy Metal…we Rock. That’s what we do. W.A.R. rocks. We’re heavy metal, hard rock.”

    Everquest would have to be

    1: Better

    2: more popular

than WoW, and its not. hence WoW is the beatles.

Being a fan of the Beatles myself, this is not a comparison I like! LOL.... Kinda like comparing Filet Mignon to a Sloppy Joe...

Then John Lennon is a dickhead for ignoring all the blues artists that made Elvis to what he was.

It should be ''Before blues there was nothing''

"Better" is a matter of one's point of view. A lot of people consider The Monkees to be better than the Beatles, just like a lot of people consider Everquest to be better than WoW.

And yes, in matters if popularity you're right. But then I could just say that "WoW is Madonna" or any other pop shitty thing around. But using "better" as an argument is incoherent. Maybe if you said some stupid shit like other people still say like "WoW is the inovat0r! WoW made health bars!!" but at least you didn't say that.

While Wow is the most popular game on the market, I would cringe at comparing it to the Beatles.

I don't think they really "changed the face of gaming" as many people would believe, they just did MMO marketing better than anyone else could do it at the time and therefore built up the largest player base.

I would definitly compare them to early Beatles as in they are just as Bubble-gum pop as the rest of the bands of their day, however, I don't see WoW undergoing the same kind of evolution the Beatles went through during the course of their career.

Besides, Paul McCartney could probably buy Blizzard.

The quote should probably be 'WoW changed the face of MMORPG gaming' not gaming in general.   The Beatles analogy still fits since The Beatles changed the face of popular music, not classic music or jazz etc.  It's an interesting comparison of the early Beatles but that's really taking the quote too far.  Paul B only was trying to say that because one thing managed to be incredibly successful that trying to copy that doesn't mean you get something successful.

As for the whole 'better' argument, that's entirely subjective.  There were millions of gamers who considered EQ garbage and never bothered playing it.  They made that clear by the game's mediocre subscription numbers.   A successful video game has sales that broke at least million like Civilization, Diablo, or Halo.  MMORPGs (outside of Korea) never could get numbers close to that and that was SOLELY because of bad game design, plain and simple.

There was always a market to support a MMORPG with millions of subscribers outside of Korea.  WoW was the first one to reach that market and it took far more than simple marketing.

Love it or hate it, there is no denying WoW finally forced MMORPGs to grow up.  They're not a joke genre for a niche market anymore.  And thankfully companies don't want to drag their games back to that no matter how much people whine for the 'good old days'.

Well popularity means nothing to me. If it means that much to you, then well lucky you, Joe Boy =/ . But then that means that the Pop musical genre is the best, and Christianity is the "best religion"? Not my fault that people who rate WoW never played DAoC or UO before, or else they wouldn't give more than 80% for a game with a PvP concept as incomplete and broken as WoW's.

Nothing else to say, I guess.

So that is your counter arguement? you compare it to something that has nothing to do with video games? please

and for the record, not everyone cares about PVP, nor does everyone agrees that DAoC or UO had better pvp.

But just because some people don't think that wow is better than Everquest does not mean that WoW isn't better than Everquest.

The argument that WoW is better than Everquest is supported by 9 million players, many awards and critic scores. The argument that Everquest is better than WoW is not backed up by anything.
