The Beatles-WoW comparison works for me on as many levels as it fails. For some the comparison is wrong because the Beatles are far more valuable then WoW .

There is however fun to be had with it. For me the fun hasnt started yet because the other 2 Titans of rock, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are not represented . At least not yet.

We desperately need them. For me Musical comparisons work even better when you consider the aweful state of MMO's.

I would call todays MMO market the disco
    ap
era where everything is cloned and talent and imagination lie dormant, cranking product after product out with machines and lacking true originality. Even if you borrow from old works your final product should be seen and felt as original!

When MMo's became viable with games like Star Wars Galaxies I was telling everyone that a whole new world of gaming was opening up. Was I ever wrong. More like a whole new game opened up and just that quick, same as in the music industry corporations seeing green sucked all the life out of the creative process. Now nobody is willing to take chances and use thier imaginations except for the smaller companies.

For hundreds, even thousands of years Music was a showcase of both talent and imagination, now it seems to put it bluntly, stupid to even call the business music. Even the bands that actually use real instruments these days seem unable to come up with inspiring songs, playing rythym cord changes over and over. Anyone remember the last guitar or drum solo that blew your mind? However lip syncing and digitized drum beats is the norm in the mainstream. Bah im getting sick just thinking of it.

What of MMO's? well to me they seem on par with todays music scene, with new games offering the experiences of old ones. There are new games coming that we are pinning our hopes to, but until they are released and prove themselves we have to conclude that the mmo market is like the rap songs that sample actual creatvity and tell us its new.

As of yet there is no dark side of the moon in the MMO industry and it looks even foggier that we will ever see a stairway to heaven. You can like a Bad Compnay or a dave mathews band while admitting they dont take your imagination to new heights, yet it seems at the moment thats all we can hope for.
