I think if done in the tradition of a pre-CU SWG (minus the bugs) a new KotOR online mmo could be one of the most popular and best selling games of all time...Yes this includes knocking WOW of the block. If the rumors are true and BW, LA, and EA are working with the original Developers of SWG, than we may be in for a treat.
A "Pre-CU" sandbox game has a snowball's chance of hell when it comes to even getting a fraction of WoW's numbers. Besides, BioWare is going the directed content route--and they've explicitly stated sandbox doesn't work. It's all here:
Honestly, out of all the information that gets circulated about the MMO, the above linked article is the one paid least attention to. Anyone reading it would at least have no delusions as to the *type* of game they are going to make.

I can deal with it, because that's just the way things are...most people are zombies and suckass when it come to games. They need to be treated like children and be lead around....But, I can deal with it.
As long as they have some kickass PVP and competitive PvE in place...I will be fine!
What I don't understand is on Bioware's own website the community manager and one of the designers said "don't hold your breath waiting for another KoToR game from Bioware" That it wasn't going to happen. Why would they say something so definite if they were working on a KoToR MMO for a whole year prior to making that statment. They didn't say KoToR 3 wasn't coming from Bioware. They said that they were not making a RIFTS game or a STARWARS game. The same thread stated that. They knew when they made those comments what their MMO was.
So honestly it looks like we can throw out KoToR and we can throw out AD&D. So that leaves some unknown or one of their own IPs.
I Think it will be Mass Effect. The reason that it might not be listed as a wholly owned IP on that PDF file (if that file is even real) could be for a lot of reasons. They might not want people to know what it is. If they said it was their own IP it would be fairly easy to assume it was ME due to the fact that they have Developers that worked on SCI-Fi before working on this product. The other reason might be due to some type of agreement with either Microsoft or with Simutronics (sp?) due to Bioware's use of the Hero engine.
People want to believe that it is KoToR, but I will be laughing my ass off at all of the dissapointed fans who want another Star Wars game. Face facts guys, most Star Wars games have sucked. SWG was one of them as well, it sucked at launch and sucks now. The game was pretty boring to play and had that ridiculous idea about how to determine who the Jedi were going to be and then on top of it all they placed it in such a restrictive time frame of Star Wars lore. The last great Star Wars game was Tie Fighter.
Currently playing: LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too: Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

I wouldn't mind a Mass Effect MMO, however just last week they were quoted as saying this project was not thier own IP. If what they say is true, I shutter to think of what it could be...Harry Potter...UGH!

So many people like to quote this thread, and it's from way back in February of 2006. A couple of things to point out:
1. The posts in question were made by BioWare Edmonton employees regarding projects at the Edmonton offices. It's all they *could* comment on, considering...
2. If you go to www.f13.com, a BioWare Edmonton developer stated on their forums that not even they knew what the Austin studio were working on (and this was as of late 2006). Give me a few moments and I'll try to find this post.
Therefore, when those devs made those posts back in February of 2006, they weren't speaking for the Austin studio, because they had no idea what they were working on (and besides, the MMO studio hadn't even been officially announced by that time). They were specifically debunking a KOTOR 3 single player game being made at the Edmonton studio.

One can't rule out anything at this point...I hope it's KOTOR, but I won't breath until it's confirmed by the horses mouth.
Also, Harry Potter won't happen--at least not by BioWare.
Damion Schubert has stated repeatedly that Harry Potter is a prime example of an IP that would make a horrible MMO. And for those that don't know, Damion is the lead combat designer for BioWare's MMO.
Here's proof that at least up until the end of 2006, not even the Edmonton team knew what Austin was up to: forums.f13.net/index.php Scroll down to the post made by Stormwaltz. That isn't proof. I take that to mean that they still can't release the information, not necessarily that the devs in edmonton don't have any idea what Austin is working on.

This is actually a complete misrepresentation of what Schubert has said. What he said was that to create a world you have to have a vision of what gameplay is appropriate for that world. He stated that EA's vision for gameplay in their proposed Harry Potter MMO (when he was at EA) was monster bashing and he didn't think it appropriate for that world.
If anything, I see yet another connection between EA and Bioware and a Harry Potter MMO.
1. Harry Potter arguably has more current fans than any potential IP in existence right now.
2. Timing wise, 2009 would about coincide with the release of the final movie in the Harry Potter series, and a peak of it's fanbase.
3. Harry Potter has a UNIQUE fanbase, many of whom could be NEW MMO subscribers...a huge advantage to simply trading a playerbase with other fantasy or sci fi MMO's out there.
4. The world lends itself well to a very unique MMO, breaking a lot of boundaries and stereotypical MMO roles...which is right up Bioware's alley.
5. EA owns the IP already...don't underestimate that.
6. LucasArts or Atari DOESN'T own the IP already...meaning EA wouldn't have to sit on the sidelines or even share...don't underestimate that either.
7. Bioware's only made 1 Star Wars game ever...and then they didn't even make the sequel to it...
8. Bioware and LA had a falling out (rumor), EA doesn't play well with others (fact)...so the combination of those 3 to make an MMO seems like too many cooks in the kitchen to me. (just as it would if you replace D&D in the mix and Atari).

There is NO WAY it will be Harry Potter.
EA just recently became involved with BioWare. The only way they would be making a Harry Potter MMO is if EA made them scrap whatever they have been working on for the past 2 years and start over with an EA IP.

1. EA just recently became involved with BUYING Bioware, but they far from "just recently became involved". The CEO of EA left EA a few years ago to form a company that then bought Bioware...and then left that company to rejoin EA just as EA bought Bioware.
2. We know that Bioware isn't working with it's own IP but someone else's license. We know that EA is listing this MMO as one of their main reasons for the purchase. I have to question if EA would be that excited about a title that they're at best co publishing with LucasArts.
If its a harry potter mmo then they dont have to worry about balancing classes becasue everyones going to be a mage lol. And I doubt its harry potter, more like kotor I think. God I hope its not Harry potter
Harry Potter is the worst idea for a MMO imo, Is there any HP game made before ? how do you know gamer community behaviour to a HP game ? and a MMO? this is just immposible We saw the failure on Matrix Online.
First, a game should proove itself as a GAME then second the merchandise's importance. btw, KOTOR sold over 3 million
Actually the various schools of magic, alchemy, creature handling, etc. provide a pretty strong system of classes if you think about it.
Personally, I wouldn't picture the entire MMO based around Hogwart's either, and the world has a vibrant system for crafting and store ownership already built in.
PVP is pretty much structured into it easily as well.
Most importantly, Harry Potter was pretty much already set up on a "party system" in the books and movies.
EDIT: and yes LOL! There's been MANY Harry Potter games, all are basically role playing, and all have been insanely successful, and all were produced by...wait for it...the new owners of Bioware.
p.s. Look at the gameplay videos of Harry Potter 5 and guess what...it looks a lot like an MMO.
Very nice compilation. Pretty obvious that it will not be associated with any existing IP. Who knows whether it will be Sci Fi, fantasy, etc. Amazing that they have kept it secret so long.
I think the Kotor rumors are disinformation to keep people from speculating what the game really is.

actually, it's definitely an existing IP. The pdf file attached to the press release concerning the buyout clearly states that the IP for the MMO isn't owned by Bioware...so it's existing and licensed by someone else.

Honestly, out of all the information that gets circulated about the MMO, the above linked article is the one paid least attention to. Anyone reading it would at least have no delusions as to the *type* of game they are going to make.
I'd agree with that. The majority of MMO players want to be lead around by the hand, they have no interest in making their own content.

Actually, I'd say they simply don't want to be bored out of their fucking skulls.
