Originally posted by ghoul31 They need to make a non free for all, non looting server. The people who will play a ffa, full looting game is small. Maybe not large enough to support the game. Also, with all that extra money, coming in, they will have lots more money to develope the game, and make it better. I don't see how anyone could be against this.
In order to understand why this would never work, you have to look at the architecture of the game itself. Every aspect of the game was designed to be placed in a FFA PvP game. Loot here will likely mean nothing, and probably will come mostly from crafters rather than as drops. Thus, getting halfway decent gear will be cake, and getting anything better will be a total waste of time because you will die 10 mins later and lose it. In a PvE ruleset, everyone will get the best armor and then whine for 3 months about how there is "no content."
There are plenty of MMOs out there with PvE. If you want that kind of content, then go play them, and stop trying to change games whose priorities don't match up with your own. You'll save yourself a lot of time and stress if you follow my advice.

I'm not trying to change this game. I am trying to save it. You won't have enough people on a hardcore server for the game to survive. You will need the income from the other servers to keep the game going.

You are crazy? There are over 700 quests, all kinds of gathering, all kinds of crafting, all kinds of NPCs to kill, huge areas to explore, I might be wrong here but it sounds like a great PvE experience to me. Like I said, there are just as many people that would love a Sand Box PVE environment as there are people wanting a sand box PvP environment. With as much as the game has to offer, it sure the hell sounds like it has more to enjoy PvE wise than 50% of the PvE games on the market today.

Not only do I agree, but I think that having a PvE server would actually be detrimental to the game's health. People need to try the PvP in this game... I don't think it will be your typical gank-fest like everyone assumes. Dying is no fun but it won't cripple your character. People die in EVE every day and you don't see them quitting over it.
Giving people a place to hide will only make it harder for them to face their fears and finally step onto the battlefield, which is what this game is really supposed to be about. The game is designed to be as conducive as possible to siege warfare and large-scale clan battles... if many people are hiding on another server, peacefully hacking away at random mobs for no reason, they will miss out on the fun.
If you don't find this kind of thing fun... well, really, you have no place in Darkfall anyways.

What about the economy? No looting or FFA pvp will make it so that armor and other equips will be less and less. Also the whole Risk vs Reward thing is ruined by this. Now the merchant doesnt have to worry about anything other than monsters which people will probably be grinding because of the lack action. As for clans that want to support a favorite clan in a fight they are out of luck and have to just sit on the sidelines. Also what about Clan vs Clan conflict? What about entrances to mines or cities? Get a bunch of guys that are not affiliated with the clan to just stand there and block an entrance.
I'm sure there are many things I'm missing that would need to be changed. I'm sure there are enough people that would be satisfied with the way DF is even though they may not support FFA and full loot that it will have enough subscriptions.

This is a perfect example of what I was talking about. Nobody even considers things like this when they suggest PvE servers. The game has mechanics in it that aren't seen in your typical MMO.
I'm more than positive that DF could go on surviving without having other servers.

You are really missing something there. There are no safeguards for the player in Darkfall Online. EVE has cloning, SWG has cloning, Shadowbane you keep your equipped items... yep, can't think of any game where when you die you lose it all without any safeguards built in. This is going to be FFA PVP full loot game with rules that cater to the GRIEFER and this is suppose to be fun? Yes. You are right. It will be fun in the short term. What about after six months to one year when people get fed up with losing everything on death all the time and the top 1% of all the guilds own all the wealth in the game. You'll go from 100k to 5k subscribers just like Shadowbane and get forced F2P or shut down.
PvP games not offering alternative rulesets makes about as much sense as PvE games not doing it. It is stupid and irresponsible for the long term life of the game to limit your player base potential because "they will miss out on the fun."
And about the clan v clan warfare. DUH! If two clans declare ware on each other then declare war and PvP. If you are allied with both clans you have a choice to pick a side or stay neutral. It isn't that hard to figure out folks.

Aside from this, you keep skill points and your character itself intact, it's only your gear that you lose, and only if your opponent finds it worthy of taking. It will take very little effort to replace gear in this game.
Also, it's worth mentioning that the devs have already stated that while having good levels and good gear will give you a significant advantage, a 2 vs 1 battle will always be one-sided no matter who is participating. Two newbs are still stronger than 1 vet. Not exactly "in the griefer's favor" IMO.

you're preaching to morons who would rather see the game die a slow death because no one will play rather then actually letting it get as many subscribers as possible.
What exactly is so WRONG about having different servers to play on with different rule sets? I have a feeling even the people building this game will be too stupid to see that they're not going to get enough players to support the game with hardcore PvP..
A niche game is fine.. but if it's TOO niche it's going to fail.
Take a look at Asheron's Call. It had 1 hardcore full loot PvP server called Darktide and that server only had a few hundred people on it. On the other hand the PvE servers were packed to the brim.
THAT is going to be how many people will play Darkfall sorry to tell you.. A few hundred on one server..
AC1 is Darkfall without the ships floating around and mounts..
If AC1 didn't have the PvE servers to support it then it would of been cancelled a long time ago.
I guess those guys over at NCsoft that created Lineage 2 are a bunch of morons?
No PvE server there, and something tells me that when I lose my crap in DF it's not going to hurt half as much as when I lost it in L2. I also have a feeling that I'm going to enjoy taking someone elses crap just as much as I did in L2.
I do not play a single PvE only game, and I can't stand restrained PvP, and I'm not the only. Not by a long shot.
Shannia DF has a bank which(To my knowledge) is protected from everyone and anything. Which I guess is equivilant to what you mentioned. You don't lose everything you own in dieing.
Questionable, that is my understanding as well. From a PvP persective, I don't like that idea at all. IMHO, and it is just an opinion, in a FFA PvP environment, where one town rolls another, I believe town and player vaults should be raided. When a person dies, if I had my way, all they'd have left after death is equipped items. If a town gets steam rolled, they'd have nothing left except what is equipped. The guild has to start over. The reason I say this is, where realistically would a player/guild go to get their stuff out the bank if their town was rolled? There town was rolled and everything in it is now owned by the people who destroyed it. Sucks to be that guild that got rolled, but they'd have their coin that never gets stolen and their equipped items on their backs to go and start over some place else.
I know that sounds hard core, but FFA PvP is suppose to be hard core. This part of this discussion should be in a thread, and my apologies to others for participation is thread hijack!

PVE types will want raids, classes, and Levels for starters. Also because there is no turnover their economy gonna be ruined. Notice, loot based games like WoW keep increasing level caps to make this problem go away.
So we're looking at a server overrun with inflation, poor PVE cause they want Class/Levels, Land being overrun cause no turnover, etc.
sounds like a hell hole too me but if you want to screw them over this bad I say go ahead i'd love to see it lol

Wish Darkfall would release.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
PVE types will want raids, classes, and Levels for starters. Also because there is no turnover their economy gonna be ruined. Notice, loot based games like WoW keep increasing level caps to make this problem go away.
So we're looking at a server overrun with inflation, poor PVE cause they want Class/Levels, Land being overrun cause no turnover, etc.
sounds like a hell hole too me but if you want to screw them over this bad I say go ahead i'd love to see it lol
yeah im not clear on how L2 works myself.
karma is explained here somewhat- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_versus_player under L2. not really clear
UO and Asherons call both had open ended skill systems. And they did just fine.
I like the point whereas one of the posters brought up EVE online.
anyway back to DFO forums not too interested in debating this one. much more concerned about other issues (just being honest)
