I have played both games and have found them both fun for some time. Although in my opinion, EQ2 keeps my interest for much longer. In WoW you level up so fast that it seems like blizzard is trying to rush to you the level cap so you can PvP with other people. EQ2 is the opposite. They pack every level full of content so that you feel like your actually playing a game rather then just grinding experience. Plus EQ2 is absolutely beautiful. I have the graphics set at medium and I still get a smile every time my necromancer summons ginormous claws to stun my enemy. And as far as the expansions for EQ2 go, you dont have to buy them all seperately, they come packaged together.
As far as most people saying "WoW is the better game" take it with a grain of salt. I garuntee you most of them started playing MMORPG's with WoW. You will always have a nostalgia effect with your first mmo... i promise you. Just play them both, whatever you find more entertaining, play it. Honestly it doesnt effect me one bit. have fun man.
Everquest 2 has my vote because of the player base. At the end-game it is all about the player base and raid encounters. I don't want to spend eternity dealing with the masses of asses at WoW(not all people at WoW are asses, but the frequency is too high to do anything without coming across one or more). You will notice fairly quickly by listening to the general channels at either one of the two games which one has the more down-to-earth player-base.
Out of Everquest and WoW, Everquest is dated but both have their advantages.
Everquest 2 vs WoW I'd have to say WoW. Everquest 2 has improved since the days of it's Beta- they've tried to make it more accessible though it is a bit of a case of you can't dress mutton as lamb as really it isn't all that great. It does nicely fill a void though where players want a bit more of a serious rpg than perhaps the cartoonish WoW.
WoW is a fundamentally better game that doesn't hide it's core emphasis; which is more around providing a game in the same way of Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft. It's abilities are very typical of any of these- mostly ofc recognizable from Warcraft. You then have an accessible, albeit repetitive, treadmill to either solo, group or pvp with those abilities. Ofc pvp imo is the most enjoyable to use them but you'll have to really level up if you want eo enjoy pvp. (early pvp are twinkgrounds that are perhaps more fun for the twinkies more than the new players levelling up)
WoW is terrible. It should be fined and banned for ruining all MMO's. It is just a easy MMO that got lucky and popular. It's not a good MMO. It's overhyped and overplayed..
WoW is terrible. It should be fined and banned for ruining all MMO's. It is just a easy MMO that got lucky and popular. It's not a good MMO. It's overhyped and overplayed..
Man you have some serious hate in that head.
Last night I solved a murder mystery, reprogrammed robots to attack zombies, got to ring the town bell to get the townspeople to fight a battle, went on an bombing raid, set some items on fire, set a trap to blow up some underground worms and solved a mystery about a womans' long lost brother.
I was playing World of Warcraft., which is not about kill X rats like everyone seems to think it is..
Im kinda surprised you asked this question...Dont the sub numbers speak for themselves??.....I played both and to me neither is great long term........I think EQ2 had more depth but I liked the dungeons and raids better in WoW.......Both are easily soloed to max level and both cater a little too much to the solo player....Blizzard is far and away the better company of the 2.......As for the graphics, the cartoonishness of WOW didnt thrill me but it didnt bother me either.....In EQ2 though, I never liked the way my characters looked in the world and several of them had a very pixelated, blockish appearance to them......You also need a much much better PC to run EQ2 than WOW and even many of the best PCs lag in the raids....... There are some factors for consideration but if I had to recommend between the 2 I'd go with WOW.
In the beginning EQ2 had great graphics for it's time, but now it looks "old" the style, and design, and quality, do look 4 years old. Let alone they have some of the worst armor graphics ever(some higher level armors look amazing though). It still looks okay. But even on release they looked plasticy and claylike.
World of warcraft doesn't try to have high tech graphics like eq2, but it looks good, and it still doesn't look "old" It looks fantasy style and easy to run. While not being high tech, it looks better with what it tries to do then eq2. Especially with the wotlk content/armors.
Gameplay
EQ2, has far worse gameplay than wow. It like the graphics feels older. They have way too many abilities, which do way too little damage(way too many un-needed abilities that you have to use in your dps rotation. My necromancer had like 5 dots, a life drain, 2 temp pets, my pet, a aoe dot, some debuffs, etc etc etc etc)
WoW has a much smoother gameplay system. While maintaining class flavor. Each class gets it's abilities, and it has a wide option of abilities available to it. But it never makes you feel like you are just using some worthless abilities over and over in succession to create steady dps, rather it has a better system, of less abilities but each one is more effective.
Group vs solo content
EQ2's group quests are fun(for dungeons). But they all feel even more monotonous then WoWs, especially solo quests. Soloing was far more enjoyable in wow than it is in eq2. Healers are FAR slower to level in eq2 except for furys, tanks are tanks. Even the quests feel "older" in eq2.(not worse... but you'll understand when you play it).
WoW, has better designed solo and group content. And way better raids and end game options for both pve and pvp.
Crafting
EQ2 has my favorite crafting system of any mmorpg out there. Definately go for it if you like to craft.
Character customization.
EQ2 has more race-class choices, but each class has it's mirror which is almost identical with some functional changes. so really just halve the class number. The race customization is much better than wow's 2 models for almost each race, and more options for facial etc customization.
But when it comes to the characters stat customization, wow's talent tress are FAR FAR FAR FAR better, then eq2's achievement, and leveling option selections. They offer bigger bonus, and lets you get more out of your favorite class.
World design.
Here's the killer.
Population.
In eq2, the general populace have moved way up, and the only real fun parts(dungeons for groups, also the fastest way to level by FAR). Are much harder to get groups for than wows instance groups. To this day you can still find people for all the leveling instances, weither they are all looking, or you have to put in some effort, the people are far more willing to run instances, then the people in eq2 are to go to dungeons.
This leads to a general boring monotonous experience for eq2, which the dungeons are afterawhile, they lose their charm faster then wows. Heck in wow i've ran every 1-60 instance over 100 times, and i still want to make a new char and go back. But at the same time, I do not want to go through the 1-60 group content in eq2 ever again, and that's with just 2 characters.
Don't believe the RP comments about how its super enforced/super done. On antonia bayle, there are tons of people who don't rp(TONS), and even more who still have names like Darkwarrior, darkdemon, demonslayer, bobthebuilder etc etc. It's no better/worse than a rp server on wow.
Overall EQ2 is a solid game, but it just lacks the fun, the style, the flair, the want to play.
It just feels older and clunkier. And with all the changes they've made, it feels like they basically tried to nerf/make everything easier for everyone to be similar to wow, while it makes it a better game. The rest of the game simply isn't on the same vibe, so it has a weird feeling.
If you're going to play a game that has leveled, quest-based advancement I'd go with WoW. Less bugs, easier to run, bigger game world, more players at all levels to interact with, etc.
Not to say there isn't some nice features about EQ2. I like how abilities function differently for PvP than they do for PvE. Keeping them seperate seems like a good solution to tweek one without fubar'ing the other. I like how guilds have their own form of advancement giving meaning to being in one outside of the social aspect. There is housing, even though its instanced. Everything else that EQ2 has that I like is really minor, like collections. It wasn't enough to hold me.
I haven't played EQ2 in a long time. I played on a PvP server and it was great fun for a while but then they messed the whole thing up. Of course therein lies the other reason to avoid EQ2; Sony Online Entertainment. EQ2 has already gone through two major changes, one of which changed the entire way characters advanced. WoW's gameplay hasn't been "revamped" like SOE games and doubtfully ever will.
WoW is terrible. It should be fined and banned for ruining all MMO's. It is just a easy MMO that got lucky and popular. It's not a good MMO. It's overhyped and overplayed..
Man you have some serious hate in that head.

What you meant to say was, last night you talked to a bunch of NPC's that triggered a few generic and poorly written storylines. Then sat and looked at your blurry N64 looking level capped character that took you a week to complete? That same character is the exactly the same as everyone elses because you don't get to pick your own stats. Since there's 6 faces to choose from in WoW and 8 million players? There is about 10,000 other people just like you doing the same thing.
The only thing left fot you to do is go attack the same monster over and over again and get better gear.
You know what WoW sounds like? EVERY OTHER MMO THAT CAME BEFORE AND AFTER IT o-o.
Why do people dislike WoW players? They don't understand that WoW isn't better than everything else. It's the same. It just happened to get lucky and hit the jackpot.
The world and theme isn't that interesting either. Why does everything have to be about Trolls and Dwarves and Orcs.. Very generic.
A truly great MMO is one that actually brings new ideas, original storylines, and depth to it. Not, Give us $50 twice a year and we will give you 10 more levels and a new boss. Fun? No.
Not sure why people seem to worship Blizzard, but i've tried most of their games. They are not that great.
Credit needs to be given to real MMO's that are being overlooked because of the zombie players who won't give up on WoW.
I think we had this discussion circa 2004. I believe the consensus was that EQ2 was going to steamroll WoW 'cause Blizzard was new and didn't have any MMO experience. WoW was very much a sleeper hit - whatever games that comes along and dethrones it likely will be as well, IMO.

WotLK is far more than more of the same. What they did in the new PvP zone is just ... incredible. No need to use words to describe it.
The difference now between WotLK and EQ2 is 4 years of incredible development. Players of Wow 2006 dropped into the PvP, crafting, PVE, arena, world PvP and gear badges of WotLK wouldn't even believe their eyes.
Just two examples: Pve and Pvp gear "bound on account" and like someone else said: the open world battlefield of Lake Winterspring looks like a bombarded and fought over WW2 city fight. All dynamic with walls that get breeched, canons fire, rocket launchers and smoke you don't see shit in front of your eyes.
People craft their own helicopters now to fly over anything, or take the tailering: they craft flying carpets to fly over the lands they adventure in. Just plain crazy. In the expansion 1900(!) new crafting plans alone.
I play EQ2 from time to time, but in reality these two games are farther apart now than you even can imagine. Anyone trying to discuss this isn't playing the two games right NOW.
Blizzard just advanced the frontiers in MMORPG with WotLK. No need to hype. I don't care if you want to hate it.
Just be aware Blizzard made it. Stay with the games you like, but don't judge before you play it.

I played EQ since beta and for a few years after it comes out. It is no WOW. WOW is like 100x better.

Everquest for it's time was good, but the gameplay of it, is simply atrociously terrible, as is it's design. compared to modern games it's actually one of the worst ones out.
But that doesn't change that it WAS great, but that also doesnt mean that since it WAS great, that it STILL is great.

Sorry, I just rejoined, and a lot of your asumptions are not longer true.
There is SOOOOO much more to d in Everquest, from the sheer size of the world if nothing else, than any other MMO.
Even after 4 years, I rejoined everquest and the first time I got nervous running somewhere, I knew the game was STILL better than anything else out there.
Comments
I have played both games and have found them both fun for some time. Although in my opinion, EQ2 keeps my interest for much longer. In WoW you level up so fast that it seems like blizzard is trying to rush to you the level cap so you can PvP with other people. EQ2 is the opposite. They pack every level full of content so that you feel like your actually playing a game rather then just grinding experience. Plus EQ2 is absolutely beautiful.
QFT.
MMO migrant.
With both games having their expansions out, I wonder who came out with better results.

If you're looking for a game to really commit time to (at least 2 hours daily), get EQ2. Otherwise, get WoW.
Both are very similar in gameplay and a lot of aspects.
IMO the WoW crafting system is dead, opposite of EQ2's.
In WoW you will pay around 90$ for the expansions plus 15$ monthly. In EQ2 it's 40$ for all FIVE expansions AND one month free.
EQ2 has a more mature and helpful community (probably one of the best in MMORPG's).
It is definately easier to group in WoW. WoW is also definately more linear than EQ2.
I find that EQ2 in general has more features.
That is my opinion in general.
WoW definately 100%, 200%, 300%, 400%, 500% definately.
First off.
Graphics.

Overall EQ2 is a solid game, but it just lacks the fun, the style, the flair, the want to play.

oh please, not even.
I think we had this discussion circa 2004. I believe the consensus was that EQ2 was going to steamroll WoW 'cause Blizzard was new and didn't have any MMO experience. WoW was very much a sleeper hit - whatever games that comes along and dethrones it likely will be as well, IMO.
... anyway...
I played WoW from release to the middle of TBC. I didn't like the new direction the game was taking, so rather than cry about it, I took my business elsewhere. I tried EQ2 after that but I just couldn't get into it - felt like I was 4 years late to the party and I'd never get to experience all the awesome (but obsolete) content that had already been superseeded.
So I got into Eve, and it was pretty painful at the start 'till I figured out that nothing I'd ever played in any MMO before really applied, been having a blast ever since. Still might try Aion though - looks pretty solid so far.

The MMO equation looks like this...
Everquest 1 >>>>>>>>>> WoW > Everquest 2 > LOTRO On-line >>>>>>>>>> everything else.

LOL .. EQ1 is a horrible game by today's standard. Unbelievable slow grind. Deep death penalty. Very non-user friendly. Not solo-friendly. Take-a-number-n-wait-in-line campfest (no instance). No quest grinding. No scripted events. And we are not even talking about the really antiquated graphics/interface yet.
I played EQ since beta and for a few years after it comes out. It is no WOW. WOW is like 100x better.

ok . that is fair. I was hooked on EQ too and it was pretty good at its time.

I would go with WoW or wait for something new. EQ died to me after the scars of velious expansion.
WoW
They really advertise much more. I've played EQ long time ago and WoW for about 1 year. I havnt tried EQ2 but I'd suggest WoW
My personal tastes go for everquest 2, haveing played wow, eq2 just appeals to me more.
playing eq2 and two worlds
