could there be an exodus from warcraft this summer ?

i ve played warcraft on two european servers for just under three years now . so i ve got to know a fair number of regular players . the majority are willing to at least try warhammer and my horde guild is actually talking about going on hiatus for a few months because so many members are looking to try this game . i think lots of us for the first month at least * when we get 30 days gametime ,will proberbly have a sub going to both warhammer and warcraft at the same time . i think if reaction is possative to warhammer and word of mouth spreads in warcraft itself , blizzard could see a large amount of people leaving . personally i m keeping my fingers crossed . i m hoping for some much badly needed competition .

No offense but...most of us don't really care what happens with WoW...and ...there are some of us (not me necessarily) that hopes WoW players stay with WoW.

Personally I think the hardcore PvE lovers, PvE raiders, and a decent number of Blizz fans that never played MMOs before are most definitly going to stick with and be happy with WoW forever.

I suspect the true PvP players that have subjected themselves to WoW because there was no where else to go that they somewhat liked are likely to come over to WAR.   The ones that stay are the ones that'll grasp the Realm vs Realm concept of PvP.

RvR's pvp is based group pvp, I think 'some' PvPers that haven't experienced anything outside of WoW might find this difficult to grasp that they have to actually group if they want to be of major use to the war effort

I how ever don't think it'll be such a mass exodus that itll scare blizz.  They've been around for a while...and their most hardcore supporters / lovers are ... never going to give up on Blizz...maybe they'll multi sub around but they'll always have a WoW account because its Blizz and for no other reason.

I personally plan welcome players of any level noob or vet that works well in a team, isn't a jerk, and likes to have a good time to WAR when it releases.

btw I think it will spur competition either way.

WAR is being designed around all the things WoW promised around launch but renigged on later due to bad long term techincal design. And without all the things we hate from WoW :)  Of course its RvR  based which is a different central design core than WoW all together.

Competition is good and healthy when it comes to the gaming industry. The best games win. When WoW is going to be challenged by WAR then it will give an incentive to both WoW and War dev teams to create better game content to sway the players. As it stands now, WoW being the one big giant in the industry people have no other BIG game to jump ships to, not saying that WoW is a bad game. Definately Blizz is doing something right, but are they putting out 110% or just being lame and slow in putting out new content. WAR could spark a rivalry, which in the end will benefit US, the PLAYERS with 2 good games.

An exodus from WoW is utter fantasy.

As pointed out above, there are a lot of Warcraft fans who don't want to go anywhere else.

Unless WAR is every bit as accesable as WoW is, and then has some stuff that is extremely compelling content wise, I don't think it's going to be the WoW killer that so many hardcore MMO fans wishful think it will be.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

    Yes, I agree with this.

WoW will be fine because WoW offers a great deal of PvE gameplay that fans like.  It also has some PvP.

WAR will offer a different "package."  More RvR-focused with some amount of PvE opportunities.

Probably the good part is that the graphics and the gameplay in WAR will feel "familiar" to WoW players -- making the transition painless and easy.

WAR graphics have a bit less fantasy look and a bit more detail, but is not greatly different, and the processing load on mid-range computers should not be very heavy in WAR.  (Age of Conan, on the other hand, will probably require higher-end computers.)

    So, will WoW do fine?

Sure it will.  It has its own niche -- and a pretty damn BIG niche as well.  Also, Blizzard sees the new MMOs coming out and will take steps to ensure that WoW remains competitive and interesting for its fans so that it will maintain its market share.

WAR will be competitive and offer its subscribers the Warhammer lore (popular for 25 years now) and Mythic's Realm vs. Realm gameplay, which many DAoC players will attest is very stimulating and a lot of fun!

Both of these things will make for a very interesting game.

There wont be any of that. WoW got an iron grip on its players and most wont leave that game. The players who started mmo's with WoW(the majority) will stay I think, the rest have either left or are on the brink of it.

i've been playing wow for almost 3 yrs. now i plan on switching to war if it turns out as good as it should. now we all know war isn't gonna kill wow but i believe that there will be alot of players looking to make the switch. yes raiders and the pve crowd will stay but there is alot of unrest in the pvp crowd.

people loathe arenas. most don't find it fun its just thats what they have to do to get top line pvp gear. theres also the bgs the grind for honor gear is  tough due to the fact that the bgs are old and have become stale. people long for world pvp big massive battles and wow has went the other direction with the arena system. yea theres northrend coming in the xpac but if war is released and delivers on what it promises before WoTLK i think you're gonna see a surprising number of people jump ship to war.

Well said Elvenangel....but personally I hope every last WOW geek stays the f*ck over there and does not come "try" WAR. Furthermore, I hope the system specs are so high that it furthermore filters out the WOW-crowd. Sorry, but I just can't stand that  sense of entitlement they seem to bring with their "well WOW had this so WAR should too" crap and the "dumbing down" effect on gameplay....but then, I don't mind if they come over and contribute to my RvR points! hahaha Fodder in the Waaaaaagggghhh!!!!!!

    Eh.

No, I don't think there's gonna be millions of people flooding to WAR when it comes out unless Mythic is really God and they can make the game incredibly awesome at release. People will be tentative about switching to a new game, even if it's great and even with all the hype. When WAR's been out for a while and people get bored of WoW (well, with Wrath of the Lich King coming out late this year, who knows when that'll be...) I think WAR will easily take its place.

    WoW, waiting on warhammer.

  • pencilrickpencilrick Member Posts: 1,550

I think WOW will take a huge hit, especially among their PVP population.  For a lot of folks, WOW is and has only ever been a "stop-gap" game while we wait and hope for better things to come out.

There is a guild on my server with that name.

I think wow is going to lose its pvp population as its pvp sucks. WotLK looks like a christmas time release while WAR is looking for summer. If that happens and WAR turns out well they may be able to grab and hold people away from WotLK.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

I can see a small exodus from WoW to Warhammer, but not a noticable amount. I say around maybe 50k players who outright ditch thier WoW account, and more who will play both for a while. WoW will still keep gaining subs and most likely gain recognition as a country under the UN.

Then again who really cares? As long as Warhammer starts with a few servers that stay highly populated and only open new ones when need be, then that would be awesome. You dont need 10 million people for a game to be great. Besides, 10 million people just means 10 million more people the devs have to listen to cry for nerfs/balances. I would prefer to be part of a great game with a smaller community than be another drone in a game with a population that almost rivals the population of NY.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

The only thing that could kill wow is another Blizz MMO, or Blizzard themselves. Too many people set their MMO roots in WoW, and will never leave.

  • DelphianDelphian Member Posts: 192

MMORPGs can be an addiction, a sick fascination of investment, especially when you're new to them. It's like a drug, almost. In this way, there are probably a lot of people who just simply don't even consider leaving WoW any time soon, because they're already deeply invested (and still having a lot of fun). Most of us probably already know what that feels like... And I think a large basis of WoW players are still in that stage of breaking the ice.

I believe you are correct sir!

Raiding is boring as hell. Same thing over again and again. Kill adds, avoid AoE, use fight gimmick, kill boss.

PvP in wow is just awful.

I for one have been waiting for WAR since it was announced as Mythics new project. Since then WoW has been the "Nothing better is out and a have a few friends that play WoW so I might as well until WAR comes out".

Totally true in the first part especially...

When WoW was in development I expected World of WARcraft, not World of RAIDcraft.... Lol, they were porting a strongly multiplayer RTS to MMORPG and after the release had the gall to claim that it was never meant to be a PvP game.. I mean, it is a RTS port, with two factions at war.. Who were they trying to scam?

Sadly, the big lie went down nicely and now it's "common knowledge" that WoW was always meant to be a PvE raiding game which is simply not true. History is written by winners, meh...

I've been playing WoW almost from the release waiting for this WAR in WARcraft to finally appear. I'm so mightily pissed at Bliz for screwing up something which might have been awesome for the dumbest MMO concept of them all - raid-based gear grinds...

I really don't care what they put in WotlK or what's their new MMO going to be. It could be all the stuff they promised for WoW initially but failed to deliver but I don't care anymore. I feel cheated and offended by these people and won't play any game made by them, no matter how objectively good it turns out to be.

I've already terminated my WoW account and am taking a break before WAR. So there you go, WoW has already lost at least 1 subscription due to new releases...

And i will try all 3 games - AoC , WAR , Aion - after few weeks i will decide where to stay.

But now i just canceled my wow account [lvl70 protWarr / fireMage / restoDruid]  and started my adventure in Vanguard :D And im impressed :D For me its better to w8 for new releases playing Vanguard, have fun as diplomate , or a crafter , build my house , own ship etc. than waste my time raiding the same bosses hundred times more before i will switch to other game anyway. Coz i know i will :D Vanguard showed me that there can be somuch more to do in a game than Grinding 1 boss for months coz all guildies need a Tier token... And i'm hoping that new games will deliver a lot of goodies for RPG crowd [pvp'ers, pve'ers, crafters, role play maniacs, "lone wolf" type and "Army guild" players etc] that will make the grind [unavoidable in mmos :D] more entertaining than "simple" WoW :D

  • altairzqaltairzq Member Posts: 3,811

Yes, but not more than half a milion worlwide, so basically things will remain the same, maybe some servers will merge and that will be all.

  • KagranackKagranack Member Posts: 8

To be honest, i hope all the players except for the mature ( in behaviour ) audience stay in WoW, don't get me wrong i had one hell of a time the first year in WoW, the thing that scared me away, was the awful community, and the game being all about gear , not skill...

    i mean wtf...

me having ( at that time ) spent half a year to get full shadowcraft, best stuffs and was back then considered one of the best rogues of that server, having my ass handed to me by an alliance night elf rogue, with no skill, but molten core gear...

    seems quite a bit unfair...

And speaking community wise, i have one thing to say...

"Give me money, or i will spam you with LEEROOOOY JENNKIIIINNNNSS!!!!"

I have played DAoC for like 3 years, FFXI for almost 3 years, and stuff like tabula rasa( half a year ), auto assault (4 months, till the game died ), CoX ( 1 year)

and up to so far, i loved the DAOC and FFXI community, the CoX community was nice as well, so if  WAR gets some people from that community, this'll probably be another MMO me luv long time!

( Sorry for the bad explanation of things, english isn't my first language, so i'm just trying to make my point here )

  • coffeecoffee Member Posts: 2,007

The problem with WAR is the PvP grind. you sack the enemy city, it reset and repeats.. woop'd do. WAR just offers PvP grind where as WoW offers PvE and PvP grind.

So will there be an exoduse? no... just as with VG, Lotro, TR and all the other MMO's released that were said to kill WoW or steal millions of there players.. it wont happen.

Sure WAR being a 90% copy of WoW (please no crap about WH being 15 years old than WC blah blah) will help its numbers but it will still play 2nd fiddle to to WoW... Those who do leave WoW for WAR will return after the free month or when Wotlk is released.

So how many of you are in beta and have been a good while and know that WAR's gameplay mechanics  and it's PvP is good ? Some of you are stating this like fact that since you like the Warhammer IP you know this game will be great -

Being a big fan of the IP means nothing in equation to WAR being a fun mmorpg , its gameplay could suck , it could be slow and boring , who knows ,

Lots can change between now and release , it could get much better and it could get much worse with bad decisions also -

But just being based on a popular IP doesn't mean it cannot turn out horrible -

I completely agree and couldnt of said it better myself.

Personally Im one of the pvp crowd that just isnt/wasnt sattisfied with what was available. Dont get me wrong, I love WoW and have a alot of fun in the battlegrounds and in the arena matches but I still miss the RvR of DAOC. It seems to me that WARHAMMER is taking from a bit of DAOC and some from WoW. Personally I dont think there could be a better combination. Some might take that as a bad thing, but Im saying that as a compliment.

As far as the pve or pve/pvp guilds I know many personally that will stay with WoW for the sheer fact of how much time they have already put into this game and building a solid guild. It takes time to get good gear, to get a "great" guild and many arent willing to let that go for something better regardless if there is something better on the horizon.

I will be giving WAR at least a 3 month subscription to give it the shadow of the doubt.  No games are perfect at the start so I think 3 months is plenty of time to get most of the main launch bugs out.  I just hope other people are willing to stick to it that long, because most people I know play it for 2 weeks then go back to WoW because they "think" its better because it don't have those bugs.

My answer is no simply because you won't see WAR before September.
