OMG! I waded through 8 pages of stuff that, for the most part, has nothing to do with the topic... Anyway, I'm a lifetime founder too and I've been playing since November 2006 (closed beta). I love the game, the lore had real depth and Turbine's done a nice job overall. The problem is, I'm finished. I've got my girls to 50 some time ago, they're all Grand Master crafters with top gear. I have all the gold I need. I got a few ranks in PvMP and find most of it rather silly. I have something like 20 open quests, most in Angmar with no incentive to do them (no experience and the rewards all suck). I keep up on the epics (Books), help my kin mates with quests, raids, CD/BG/Uru runs, rep dungeons, etc. Besides LotRO, I am playing two other MMOs currently in closed beta. This is not about hardcore. casual, or any such labeling. This is about having gone through all the content Turbine has given us in LotRO -- gone through, not burned through -- and much of it many times over (some epics I've done over a dozen times). Turbine needs to lift the level cap and focus attention away from avatars who scratch themselves and personal horses whose heads toss from side to side, and, their obiquitous penchant for screwing with exploit mode to the point where pathing remains a real joke ... Turbine needs to craft and introduce real, interesting incentives for players that are 50+ to stay and continue to play LotRO.
But it was my understanding that "Chicken Play" was suppose to be the game to keep you...
I kid..I could feel the depth of end game was less than lacking, and PVmP can keep some people...but, the game as everyone states is lore based PvE...and who wants to PvP in a PvE world? Not many I assure you.
So, the looking at this thread, I wonder what people would like to see to make it worth their while to come back to LOTRO? And also can the new games maybe be the breaking point...as people will have new titles to to play with all new content and LOTRO will be a nice diversion...or will Turbine have to wait 3 years like SOE to get everyone back after a couple of expansions and new content to spare?
I have played lotro since open beta and now have a 50 hunter. My kinship has finished all end game content and has geared every one of our players in full rift armor for about a month now. This game has sooo much potential its crazy. The graphics are amazing, the deed system and titles are pretty cool, and the end game raids are fun. But of course this game lacks a severe amount of content. I am to the point of canceling my subscription because of the lack of pvp and overall content it offers. I am hoping turbine is gonna come through with an all new expansion with new raids overhauled pvp and SOMETHING TO ACTUALLY DO. People have nothing left to accomplish in this game once they finish all the content which quite honestly doesn't take very long. The PVP in this game stinks. It's almost the point of calling it non-existent. The ettenmoor's is a great idea but my god open world pvp is where its at and what people consistently ask for in mmo's. A playable race of orcs they say doesnt fit in with what they want to accomplish with this game . Now I know that idea has been thrown out there but lets see turbine dare to dream and give the people what they want and something called content for a game that could be one of the best mmo's on the market. It can compete with AoC and WAR when they come out if they give this game what it needs a major content add and pvp overhaul.
I completely agree with you - the PvP is really horrible and imo unbalanced, the freeps are too overpowered, especially if they come with like 10 burglars against you, the creeps have no chance. I don't find it fun at all
What I miss is more raid instances like the Rift and especially Helegrod. And they too need to be revisited, most bosses are no challenge at all.
We really need something to do, after we reach level 50 and gather all the class items. It was so much more interesting while I was doing the epic quests and following the story
Ok, now the way I understand it. When you get to the top level you all are bored and want more. Right.
Is there a game out there that constently gives the top rung people more and more everytime they get to the highest level they can get? As I said the game I use to play had level 250's in multiple ways. There were still people complaining ok, I am now level 250 in everything, I am bored nothing to do , they need more content.
I personally (my opinion only) feel a bit sad for these people. I don't think there is a game or will there ever be a game that will keep you all happy.
But if the rest of us are happy, your (trying to be nice here) calling each other names is not going to help. All I see is everyone getting defensive.
I personally am quite content. In the last 8 years I have played about 11 different games, beta tested just about the same number. LOTRO is the one I am happy with, I can move at my own speed, I can just relax somewhere if I want, (I am life member so no hurry what so ever), I can grind, I can craft, I can do what I want.
As far as PVP goes, I think there are some games coming out that I hope will make you all happy, but remember when you get to the top of their levels, you will be bored once again, and complain once again.
I for one even tho I got an invite to the beta of one of these games, but I do not need brutal combat, so I declined the offer.
I hope you all find the PERFECT game one of these days, tho I doubt it even exists. But guess there is always hope.
And no, it will not "rip".... as long as they make money earned for someone - which they very well do. You see, thats where we differ again. You see these games as a success as long as they are making lots of money. I don't use that as a measure at all.
Ok, pointless flaming skipped. Here is my point:
I thought you had given up talking to me and put me on ignore? Didnt last long eh? I will just rack it up with all your other 'interpretations' of straight talk you have demonstrated here.
Attempting to re-invent me as a troll dosent make you right friend.
My posts have been direct, rational, clear, and with a obvious purpose. This isnt the definition of trolling. You just seem to try and insult me eveytime you havent got an answer.
Your 'debate' is all smoke and mirrors, and thats putting it really kindly.
Skipping actually answering any of the valid, clearly delivered, and rational points I have made also dosent make you right.
Grafting your defintions on what I am saying, as opposed as to responding to what I am actually saying also dosent make you right.
I don't know you, but it looks like you are (or feel yourself to be) something like a real pioneer standing at the west coast looking at the skyscrapers, all the cars and the beaches, and sadly saying to yourself "oh, where are the REAL times, all the challenges, the won fights, the thrill". Probably an EQ1 or UO vet. Is that right?
Yep, I came up through PnP gaming, then MUDs, then EQ1. This has all given me a pretty complete understanding of where this genre has bee, and where it is heading I think.
You see, the first generation of online gamers were pioneers.
They built the house that you are now trying to re-decorate.
What don't you get about that?
Please, I can assure you that I do not feel a tiny tad negative or for that matter, positive for the many gamers who are in similar shoes. It's neutral to me.
eh? Why don't most of your sentences make any sense? This isnt the first that is confusing in the point you are trying to make...
The problem is, the world has moved on. You might not judge an MMO based on how much money it brings (means: how many people play it), but unfortunately it is not you who run them, but the devs/publishers.
Unfortunate is right.
Your utter and complete naive trust in the investors/ publishers to deliver you a quality game in the future of this hobby is only gonna get you shallow, crappy, money driven, mmo-lite games.
You see, you can make a profit without profiteering, but thats proobably a hard concept for you. I won't even bother with using terms like 'art' and 'integrity'.
Why do you wanna eat gruel, when you could eat steak, just because the chief tells you gruel is faster to make, fills you up just fine, and you can reheat it later..?
And oh yes, they do decide its future based on its productivity.
See above. I will ignore the smarmy tone of your posting.
As MMO's becamo more and more mainstream, the "30m player" (which I am not, and never said that I was, that's one thing less on my "bad points" display on your screen, I hope) will be the vast majority.
Again see above.
I am confused (again) though.
What has this got to do with any of the points I have made in this thread? You once again seem to be making your own points on my behalf so you can deliver your cut n paste 'answers'.
I have edited the rest due to it having no relevance.
NOR me are "right" or "wrong" (this was actually said in my first reply to you, but I don't think you remember.
No, you are wrong when you say 30 mins is not ultra-casual, and you are wrong to call anyone who dares play more then that a 'no lifer'
Stop trying to continously re-invent your stated stand points in these posts.
We both have ideas and opinions and arguments, and we can decide to post them intelligently, or we can be agressive arrogant assholes,
I believe my posts have been intelligent. I will leave it to you to decide about yours.
To be honest, I havent understood two thirds of what you have written, and the othe third has been re-inventions and back pedalling on the points I have understood.
and make a good (?) fight. I might have looked like one who does the latter, (and probably started on that side a little), but please re-read all the replies you made to my post. If I drank as many beers as your personal attacks on me, I couldn't have typed a single word of this reply
Where have I attacked you personally? Please feel free to quote some of them below..
I will do the same in response.
I have stated that you have mis-represented me, re-invented your points as it suits you, been dismissive to other gamers, and generally been quite insulting when you havent got an answer, but thats not 'attacking you'. Thats just observing the truth.
To be honest, I am happy leaving it here.., 'Debating' with you is just a big headache.
Definitely an EQ veteran, hijacking threads and tearing other peoples post apart piece by piece..........ahhhhh the good ole days of which I for one do not miss.
I bet for every "I left b/c there's no PvP" player, there's at least one person like me who would leave if Turbine implemented world PvP. I also would not play if I could just "log in with some friends and kill stuff". The quests and storylines keep me coming back. So, I remind those who complain about the state of the game that while YOU may want certain changes, I don't. Turbine had made a game that caters to people like me and not like you. Don't ask them to 'ruin' the game I like. Go find a game that caters to you instead. And you know what? When you find your game, I'll be courteous enough to not whine for changes in it if you let me have the game I like here.
From the dev chat:
[17:39] Annuvin_LOTRO: LOTRO is a game, that is meant to appeal to all sorts of players. Much like politics, each and every feature appeals to X % of our players, means nothing to Y% of our players, and enrages Z% of our players. Trying to encapsulate an MMO in a blanket statement of "just for casual" is sort of like trying to say baby wipes are 'just for noses'.
So, straight from a devs mouth.... it does not just cater to people like you, it IS MEANT TO APPEAL TO ALL SORTS OF PLAYERS. I'm am so sick and tired of hearing people call this a casual mmo, a hardcore mmo, a hello kitty adventure, too easy, too much focus on raiding, blah blah blah... it's for everyone.
Some people want more PvP, and they have the right to bitch about it. If you don't like that, maybe you should find yourself a new game that really does only appeal to casual gamers. Besides, if people didn't start flamefests, this forum would be boring as hell.
By your definition I would be hardcore. I raided in WoW 5 nights a week, 4-6 hours a night. I had 21 exalted factions, was maxed leveled in my professions, including fishing, had uber patterns, owned all the epic mounts, including all the flyers that could be bought or earned through rep grinding and was decked out in all tier. Guess what? I left because I was stressed out, felt i needed to rush rush and became an elitist bitch with a lack of patience with people who didn't *think* like I did. Then the expansion came out and it became pvp hell. Can we get loots any easier now? Lets get a bot or jump around enough so it looks like i am doing something so I don't reported while i read a book or hey lets get those 10 games in a week, win or lose, guaranteed purple.
I HATE PVP and the attitudes that come with it but the same can be said for the end game raiders and their snot nosed attitudes.
We game to unwind and have some fun.
I left WoW and found LoTR and I love it. The community rocks(actual advice and help given in a polite manner without all the jibber jabber noob crap ), the graphics are awesome, I am never bored or feel compelled to max level . I love the storylines, the quests, the rp, it has so much that I really enjoy and so many others do also.
I do not feel the drive here for uber loot bragging rights in pvp gear or i r uber cause we downed that next raid boss and are the number one guild. I do not need it. Having that mentality turned me into a psycho who forgot for awhile that these are all pixelated worlds, not reality and if the internet was gone tomorrow, life goes on.
I lose myself and genuinely escape, becoming a kick ass REAL LORE elf in Eriador, not some bouncy blue bimbo or a sarcastic anorexic sexpot AND I cut my play time in half, I enjoy a few hours a night after my son goes to bed and omg, I do progress.
I have said it before, pvp brings out a bravado crap talking attitude that does not appeal to everyone and it seeps into the game, entering every chat channel.
I hate pvp and omg I do not want it at all in LOTR.
I have more fun now than I ever did in WoW. I miss the friends I made over there, but I am making new friends here.
If you are unhappy with LOTR, go somewhere else where you can pvp and end game raid your UBER LEET hearts out and leave LOTR alone. There are TONS of mmos out there that would suit your tastes. Let us have our world, go find yours, it is apparent your travels haven't ended for you. Good hunting.
We are all gamers, we all matter, and we all have the right to a good time wherever we pay to play. WoW was not fun for me anymore after three years and a crap expansion/pvp BS so I moved on, so can you.
I-I-I-I-I...what ever happened to "we"? As in "we the people"? It's not like PvP will ever be forced on you. Why not give other people a chance to experience what they want, rather than focusing on you being able to escape your life for a few hours without having your fragile feelings hurt because other people are doing things at a different pace or place. Sounds like you expect LoTRO to cater only to the desires of a casual gamer who uses the game in an unhealthy fashion to escape their life, rather than a hobby thats innovative, unrepetitive(PvE), and may actually require input against another sentient being in a test of intelligence.
I believe Hugahay was expressing their opinion on how they feel about the game. Same as you are doing.
No one can talk for WE. or the people.
Such as some like it some don't. If you like PVP fine, if you don't like PVP that is also fine. I am sure something will come up, if not there are continuely new games coming all the time which I am sure will have problems and some will not like and some will. That is the way life goes.
Personally I have found the pace at which they release new content to be about right. The PvP just got a big expansion in the last patch. It's been pretty popular on my server, a lot of players are gearing up in it. And the next patch is adding a new 45-50 area the size of the North Downs. Maybe you should wait and see what they do with that before you claim the sky is falling.
I also think it's next to certain that the announcement is a paid expansion and either a level cap raise or another advancement system for 50s to mess around with. Maybe a riff on the AA system in EQ, we'll see. Of course you guys will have 5 60s or five 50s with maxed AAs three weeks after the expansion luanches, so I'm not quite why you would care about it.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
I'm an eve players so I don't know anything about this game however, coming form a PvP mmorpg I personaly think having a two sided match with humans fighting off an orc invasion like in the the movie would be the greatest thing ever.
you know with 100 players as orcs running voer the hills to attack the walls and archers and bows and once they brteak through they get into the caves and start killing civvilian NPC but then a back up army of 30 players attacks form behind.

Something like this happens in the 'Moors every day.

You are of course right. Vanguard, supposedly the throwback to nostalgia MMOs, had players maxing out levels in little over a month.
The solution, as I've posted before, is that these types of players need to have multiple subscriptions to different games. It is the only way they'll have enough content to keep them busy.

Turbine is not the best at doing the whole pvp scene so its gonna be a give and take thing.
but this is comign from a old school asherons call guy and if you know what that is then you know what go red means =D
Yup... I remember. Dieter, the gimpy swordmaster in Morningthaw was my first MMO character... I remember wanting a sword that could do blunt damage just so I could farm those damn golems Good days. And yeah, just like in Turbine's current game, PvP was an afterthought... a side diversion.
Just the whole idea that you can be a total noob to the game and simply by achieving level 10, which you can do in about 2 hours it gives you the right to create a level 50 Creep and join the fight in the Moors is pretty weird. Yes, some people enjoy playing the Creep side and take the time to learn how to do it well but by design, the number of players who know their character really well and have some pride of ownership and sense of acomplishment are always going to be the Freeps who leveled 1-50, 50 Creeps are never = 50 Freeps simply because about 25 of those Creeps are noobs or spies with no commitment to that side.
Regardless of what they intended at the beginning, the PVE part of the game is stagnant. A level cap increase to 60 or so will only "fix" this for a month or two at most. Then it will be right back to end-game content which is raid grinding for gear or PvP in the Moors. Of those two, PvP is by far the more enjoyable activity and accessible to the casual gamer who hates raid schedules and 4-6 hour commitments. I have a couple of spare hours? I can head to the Moors and find some fun.
I love LOTRO lore. I was a huge Tolkien fan before many of you here were even born and love the PvE story line quests in the current game. But I would absolutely love to see a fully fleshed-out PvP or RvR component that required leveling your Orc from 1-60 and made you choose the same side for all your character slots on a server (like in Dark Age of Camelot in the beginning.)
After Asheron's Call I headed over to Dark Age of Camelot and had great time in RvR. For those of you who don't know DAoC, it was a game designed around PvP. It was PvP with a difference in that normal servers also had PvP but just between the three sides: Dwarves, Elves and Humans (and their allies) in designated border zones. It was even tied-in to PvE in that taking over the two relic keeps from another race and stealing their relic gave a boost to your whole realm in either + melee or + magic depending on which relic... steal the relics from both other foes and you had a very nice and significant boost even in PvE questing. I mention all that just as an example of what a game looks like when it's designed as PvP from the ground up.
LOTRO really needs to make some fundamental changes. The PvP aspect has gained popularity over this past year and has become the most (only?) enjoyable part of the game for many. It's pretty obvious to me that developers have noticed and are spending a lot more time fleshing out PvP (a good example is the addition of the new PvP dungeon that is very much like Darkness Falls in DAoC) I'm just not sure they will ever make fully-fleshed-out questing and leveling for monsters... In other words, a whole new companion game attached to the current one where those spiders and orcs can do their own PvE with many PvP connections between the two halves.
I think hordes of orcs attacking Rivendel would be a hoot,
Game first... then squeeze it into the lore.

Fundamental changes? You mean like SWG:NGE fundamental? We all know how that worked out.
It makes no sense to ramp up PvP, it simply won't compete with the PvP MMOs designed for PvP from the start.
PvMP in battle ground areas works fine for its intention: Casual PvP play. A diversion. A side game. The PvP dungeon added was part of their plan, and isn't evidence of an increased focus on PvP. That's like saying Turbine added the Rift because of increased raiding focus. Not true. Turbine is touching on each game system in turn as part of their plan to support a variety of playstyles.
And no, 'game first' will not solve anything. Some players already complain that the game is too similar to other MMOs (I don't agree). The Lore is the only thing keeping LOTRO different from other games.

If I wanted PvP ganking and griefing around the map I would go back to my level 70 char at WoW PvP server. LOTRO is a PvE game and that is why I and many others are plying it. I would love a good PvP game and I will probably try AoC as a rotating alternative to LOTRO.
And no, I don't think hordes of orcs attacking Rivendell would be a hoot - it would be as stupid as Crossroads/Astranaar, with adition of killing Tolkien's lore completely.
Anyways it is a moot question, Turbine got a licence from Tolkien Foundation and the later made clear that open world PvP has no place in the lore.
What does license has to do with PvP? No one ever stated that PvP has no place in lore. What was said is that at the moment they have no plans for open world PvP but LOTR settings are perfect for PvP. For people like you there can always be RP servers where you can fish or change your hairstyle but there is players who actually need a bit more from this game. From my point of view, game would be better without you, with millions of subscribers cos at the moment game is almost empty and its hard to find decent fellowship and its all RP.

Wrong. Lotro will never be able to completed whit other pvp games like AOC or Warhammer in the future, so therefor theres no point in adding world pvp since nobody will be instrested in it cost huge amount of monney and development time, also Turbine does not plan to do so.
But thay do plan in adding other intresting things and sorts of mpvp to keep it a balanced game whit its main focus on casual questing/exploring/mpvp/raiding/roleplaying, wich is good, there more then enough other pvp games out there and 2 great ones comming up so Lotro is no copetition for them.
Playing:World of Warcraft. Played:Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies. Tried:Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.
"Game is empty" ist just plain wrong. The game is actually getting crowded, of course, this is my personal view, but there were times, around fall 2007, when the game saw MUCH fewer people than nowadays.
If they decided to implement Open PvP, as I stated before, this game would probably become a second SWG, betraying its original concept as a full scale PvE game for some half-assed world PvP that has never been planned.
Fact No1 - A PvP game needs a PvP world concept from day ONE to succeed. Dozens of examples that prove this.

It's true that there are PvP-focused games coming out in the near future, however imo, that's even MORE of a reason for LoTRO to compete. Personally, I would rather PvP in Middle Earth than the Conanverse or Warhammerverse (sorry, I don't know much about the lore in those games).
Anyways, I think Turbine is perfectly capable of developing a more in-depth PvP system if they needed to. I wouldn't say it's out of the question... they just didn't have plans for it at that time. There are ways to implement PvP without ever touching PvE, it CAN happen. It's pretty clear that LoTRO has been successful for them, being a private developer they probably got a nice windfall from the sales and subs.... so I don't think development money would be a problem.
You also say no one will be interested, and that's not true at all. LoTR is a top-notch license, it has staying power and appeal to a lot of gamers. Anyways, I'm sure WAR and AoC will be pretty good, and fill that PvP void that people are looking for, I would just rather subscribe to LoTRO than having to subscribe to 1 more game :-P
Of course there WOULD be people that would probably love to see world PvP. But do you guys think spending huge amount of money and effort to build a grand-scale update that changes the whole LotRO design idea would pay off for Turbine?
No, it would pay off if they had started as a "battle for middle-earth" game from scratch, but in its current state, they would, at best, shift their customer base. There are armies (!) of people that love the game for exactly what it is, the one top notch PvE and roleplay experience on the MMORPG-mass-market...
If there was more to lose in lotro PVP it would be more fun. All you lose now is your pretty little star which just makes you more of a target and more and more greedy/coward.What there needs to be is for 1.
Renown for taking keeps.
for 2.
3 hour seiges on keeps. Not 10 minutes ones, it needs to be much more difficult.
for 3.
A bigger map.
As for world PVP i would settle for a map the size of the entire world itself.
There are so much this game could do , thats why i am sticking with it.
PVE is great. Tons of planned out fights from 10 mintute ones to 1 1/2 hour fights.Customization is scarce but its mostly about the group , and how much skill you use in your class.
Aside from the casual vs hardcore arguments, there's been some interesting discussion here.
Will the announcement make or break the game for me? Nope. I've got a lifetime sub. I still like the game a lot. Plan on playing it for a long time to come. But I am excited about the announcement, and I'm looking forward to it.

It can be easy to burn yourself out. I have a lot in common with the above poster. Sometimes I will get bored and get the feeling that there just isn't that much content that I want to work on any more. I don't say there is no content that I haven't done, because there are instances I haven't finished, bosses I haven't killed, classes I haven't played, quests I haven't done, etc. But at this point in time I don't feel a particularly interested in investing time for those things. Anyway this is kind of irrelevant. The point I was hoping to make is that I think you have to manage your expectations. For the type of game that LOTRO is that attempts to appeal to lots of different playstyles, you can't expect the game to be all things to all people. And I really respect LOTRO for taking the approach that they have taken. In the end it will make for a much richer game. The content will come. If you've gone (or burned ) through the content then take some time off and wait for more.
Or maybe you can find new ways to enjoy some of the current content. I've been thinking about doing that myself. Maybe starting on a new server and doing some roleplaying, possibly finding a group to play with that does self-imposed permadeath or something like that.

Because putting PvP into a game after release worked so well for CoH and DDO.
A certain element of the PvP crowd demanded CoH and DDO implement PvP. Look where it got those games -- no where. A lot of development time for very little return on investment.
Certain elements of the PvP crowd consider the metagame of convincing a company to implement PvP just as challenging as PvP itself. Once they get PvP into the game, they've 'won' the metagame.
And yes, I like PvP -- but only in MMOs designed for it. Not only that, I don't need EVERY MMO on the market to have PvP as it appears some PvPers do.

Hopefully the announcement is huge!
You all have a nice day. Many hugss to you all
Ok, pointless flaming skipped.
Have a good day and hugsss
I'm an eve players so I don't know anything about this game however, coming form a PvP mmorpg I personaly think having a two sided match with humans fighting off an orc invasion like in the the movie would be the greatest thing ever.
you know with 100 players as orcs running voer the hills to attack the walls and archers and bows and once they brteak through they get into the caves and start killing civvilian NPC but then a back up army of 30 players attacks form behind.
oh man that would be great.
Just a FYI to everyone on turbine and pvp
Turbine is not the best at doing the whole pvp scene so its gonna be a give and take thing.
but this is comign from a old school asherons call guy and if you know what that is then you know what go red means =D

You are of course right. Vanguard, supposedly the throwback to nostalgia MMOs, had players maxing out levels in little over a month.
The solution, as I've posted before, is that these types of players need to have multiple subscriptions to different games. It is the only way they'll have enough content to keep them busy.

Yup...

Kindly keep your PvP out of my PvE.

There is just so many possiblities.

LOTRO- Guardian Wrymstrum & Lore-master Stabler on Nimrodel.
Conan- Zoltar <Angels of Death> Guardian on Stormrage.
