Nice update. A lot of kicks to Aoc in here but as another poster commented on; the devs and community around Funcom haven't been playing nice either. The fraud elements of the vaporware movement is loosing ground as well. No preorders and test before buy. If these guys are crooks, they will not get any cash out of even the most naive amongst us gamers.
they lost the moment they stepped in here
I never agreed with the ability to try a game without a Credit Card... it incites people to create new "trying" acounts repeatedly.
in a full PvP game, where level and gear doesn't matter, sounds like a ganker's paradise who doesn't want to be pinned or charged. Every 2 weeks.
Also sounds like a good way of dual-boxing. Big siege coming up? Get yourself 2 friends to make characters the day before on seperate machines and control both at the same time.
Yes, this can still be done in full action games, I've seen somebody play Battlefield 2 with 2 characters at the same time... before somebody thinks they've outsmarted that theory.
So what, oh mighty DFO worshippers, will be done about that? That's not PvP, that's griefing.

I'm not sure you may try it without a credit card or some king of identification. I dunno.
Making a new character every 2nd week doesn't sound like a good option for me.
Skill based characters may not be gods after months or years of playing but they sure as hell will be more versitile. Ever tried Eve ? I don't know any who rerolled there, ever. I really hope this game gets finished one day...and I really hope it does well.
With that said...if I was Tasos I would shoot myself in the face shortly after hiring someone else to write the PR stuff for me.
I know this has been quoted already, but I will do it again.
Someone asked for a description of a typical PvP and a PvE encounter: To this I'll answer that there is no typical encounter in Darkfall. There are too many variables and you never know what you're getting into. Here's a quick PvE encounter for you nevertheless:
You ride up to a seemingly abandoned village and you get off your mount to explore it. As you enter through a gate, you hear a sound just as a mob jumps on you from above and connects with its weapon. You back up trying to mess up its range while you pull out your battleaxe. You rush the mob which circle-strafes you and you miss in your initial attacks. You manage to trade a couple of blows with it and it turns and runs. You pull out your bow and you notice it's doing the same as it's running off. You aim for its back and right as you release, your aim is thrown off by the explosion of a fireball which knocks you back and you miss. By the time you recover, the initial mob starts landing arrows on you and its friends are shooting spells while a couple are closing in to engage you with melee weapons. You run to your mount under fire and you try to get away but it gets killed from under you and you have to run away zigzagging because your character is in bad shape. Just as you think you're safe, an arrow, fired by another player you haven't seen in all the commotion, finishes you off and you're summarily stripped of your belongings. The End.
Seriously? This looks like it was written by a third grader. Also, reading this...I would expect random mobs to pop out of nowhere and WTF Pwn me, and if I happen to get away, I'll get griefed.
He should have put a bit more thought into that.
On a brighter note...I thought the jibes at AOC and WoW were hilarious.

you miss the point...it was horribly written. He should have taken five minutes to have some professionalism and proof read a bit first. It would give him a lot more credibility.
Besides, all he really did with the whole thing was read forums of other games and tried to hit the points he saw people mentioning, with a spin towards making DF look good. He didn't actually SAY anything.
p.s. I'm not a hater, I've been following this game for years.
cant expect the update to be perfect because all we want its beta starting really because anything he can say know we will find out when we are playing so lets see what happen in the next few updates. maybe a new vid in 2 weeks? city building and sieging? dno : )

I really hope that the character skills(not player skill here), and invested time is not as important in DF as it is in EvE. EvE is not bad, but you need a lot of time invested, before the fun really begins.
Caesers arguement is this time profound.. it could be really a problem. But i guess they refered much more to a free open beta before the game launch, and not so much for a free trial.. even if i think, that they have to do it in the long run, and it would be good for the game. But they have really think about some way to reduce the grief potetial out of it.. and legit credit card would be of course one way.. not that you cant come around it, but it would be at least a lil bit harder.(no need to charge the credit card, you can check it without charging)
Nevertheless a good journal this time, nothing incrideble new, but refreshing the faith, that they stick to their guns, and i havent dreamed the features and concept by myself.. Now they have just to show it someday soon.
And as always, you can say about DF what you want, but from a concept standpoint it is the almost perfect pvp sandbox mmorpg.. as much as i can valuate it. In this concept a lot things are done right.. like the point that a noob can fight from the very beginning against veterans and a lot more.
do you have nay proof they didnt find anyone and they jsut didnt turn the publishers down because they didnt get the deal they wanted like what was said in dev journal 22 ren you really making stuff up know no clue hwy the mods let you keep making new accounts caus ei bet i can go to warcry and i bet aperson named teedle has said almost the same thing you did
me you went into a bit more because if you said the same thing here you would get banned.
here ill quote you ren from warcry aka teedle

Tasos goes into detail about their progress in terms of publishers and reveals that they are likely to self publish
That's because no one wants to publish what they have. Doesn't take a genious to figure out that if they cannot get a publisher , than what they have is junk in the eyes of all publishers who reviewed it. Dark and Light was forced into "self publishing" too. After reading this journal it really looks like they are starting to get scared of the hype they can never live up to. Taking shots at a game that is 100 levels above what Darkfall will ever be (AoC) isn't going to make Darkfall look like anything more than what it truly is at this point - a 7 year old pipe dream that has not released anything other than some screenshots and a few Alpha videos showing nothing but some PC's running around outdated scenery. Oh and thanks for including a cool video to look at with ALL THE ACTUAL GAMEPLAY you guys have made up until now.. Oh wait , there was none. Nevermind. Maybe one day when they actually grow some balls and decide to show what they actually have behind closed doors they might actually move past the vaporware category.
The typical reaction to the screenshots has been for people to wonder what kind of beast they're going to need to play the game.
Ya because everyone knows that you need a beast of a computer to play a game that literally has graphics from 2002. What kind of drugs is this person on?
wow you guys post about the same stuff pretty obvious who you are
i love how you mention AOc being a better game LMAO man your in for a treat
I can see the journals are getting more pathetic as the days go by. Do you know why they're going to self publish? (if they actually get that far) Because they can't find anyone who wants to publish. Should give a very good indication of the shape this thing is really in if they can't even get a B grade publisher to box this thing up. Just as you think you're safe, an arrow, fired by another player you haven't seen in all the commotion, finishes you off and you're summarily stripped of your belongings. The End.
Wow sounds fun. I have to endure troubles in real life , and now the developers of a video game want to put me through even more bullshit in an imaginary world. Where do I signup?
You are so right.. like EvE, DAoC and a lot of other games are all shit because of selfpublishing.
The need of a publisher is just given, if you need the money of them for developing(no need for it.. DF should be almost rdy.. at least what we know). Or to get rid of the distribution, which costs indeed a lot of time, and some money. A publisher dont bring just advantages, like money, manpower, experience.. they also bring a lot of disadvantages.. they want something for their money, they want some kind of control and a good profit. So it is always a trade of, and depends a lot what publisher you find, what he can do for you, and what it will costs you.
Of course if you want to publish a overhyped megaseller, like WoW was and WAR will be, you need one, because you need a lot of money for advertising and a lot of manpower to coordinate everything accordingly. But in all honestly Darkfall is far away from being a megaseller, and it would not be clever either.. i really have no problem if they do it like CCP did it with EvE. But why do i even answer to a troll.
Well I have to say that I personally think this update is very good and has restored a little more faith in myself that Darkfall may actually see a public beta sometime soon. What specifically restored that faith is the part about there being no preorders and that everyone can try before they spend any money. This alone says a lot about their confidence in their product and that they feel that they have something that will succeed under the scrutiny of the average gamer.
One thing that has become blatantly obvious to me after reading this thread is the total desperation of the Darkfall naysayers as of late. It really gave me a chuckle, thanks guys as I've been ill lately and needed a good laugh. One in particular that I found humorous is to attack a person for which English is a second or third language for his grammar. I'll tell you what......You write out that same paragraph in Greek and we will get a Greek person to correct it and see how you do. I bet it will be a lot worse than the Dev's. I think that for someone that English is not his native tongue he does very well and should not be faulted for a few misspellings and grammar mistakes. This attack on the Dev alone tells me that the haters are just getting desperate and are grasping at anything to try to fault this game and Dev team. Very bad form gentlemen.

Dark and Light said the same thing. Its all just talk at this point. Until they go to a gaming convention and show people that they actually have a working game with the features they claim, it doesn't really mean anything

If these people were serious after 7 years they would be showing the game to someone in hopes of getting a publisher.
Going to these conventions would generate some real life hype and get people to notice it might be worth investing in the game. ( especially considering how many people want a piece of the mmo pie)
I guess their not too serious about publishing this game though after 7 years and a couple screenshots think their just milking the develpoment cash cow at this point ( whomever that may be).
It was nice to see some guy who is making "the game" talk some trash about his competititors when he cant even produce a beta to show that his game is better ? Get a life darkfall devs get off your asses and do something instead of talking all this shit like you got something great. when you aint got a pot to piss in.

Agreed!
It is amazing that people can talk shit about AoC when their game has been in production longer than AoC, yet AoC has been in beta for almost a year and been shown to the public at conventions for the past three years. They want to trash talk AoC devs, yet the only updates we get from the DFO devs are useless dribble. DFO devs are a joke.
When the DFO devs can show up at E3 or DragonCon with a finished playable game to show me, then they can talk smack. Until then, back to their computers and write code! Just because you have the EU and Greek governments funding you doesn't mean you take forever creating your damn game. Working on EIGHT years now DFO devs... about damn time you finish.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Yes, you are absolutely right! But my question to you is as follows. Forgetting the fact that D&L was a horrible game, did it release? Yes it did. As for the gaming convention bit I don't put much weight to that argument as whether or not hey decide to show off their game is completely up to them. There have been plenty of games released that never saw a single convention so that argument means absolutely nothing to me at this point as it is a meaningless argument. Gaming conventions are mainly for developers that feel the need to generate hype for their games and apparently the Darkfall team feels that this hype is unneeded in their case as they have stated on many occasions. They feel that the game will generate its own hype after it hits beta. It already has generated a certain amount of hype on its own as we wouldn't be having this very discussion otherwise.
One would think that with the events that surrounded Mourning and every other iteration of that non existant game afterwards, serious devs would try a little harder to show and not say things about their game. I'm not smack talking the devs of DFO, but if I were them I'd be very careful how I carried myself. I sincerely hope they are very serious and deliver on their word to those that are very interested in this game, but until they actually show some proof what they say isn't just garbage (not talking screenshots, or supposed ingame footage) I will remain skeptical about this game.
But in DF you will never be domenated by a high level character. You will always have the ability to fight, flee or hit the fence. And that you dont have in any other MMO.
I thought the journal was very interesting, and it certainly paints a fun sounding game. I hope one day soon I get a chance to play it.
However, to refute your statement above, there was one very disappointing mechanic he described in DF that caters totally to cowards and griefers, and its a shame they plan on incorporating it.
"Just as you think you're safe, an arrow, fired by another player you haven't seen in all the commotion, finishes you off and you're summarily stripped of your belongings. The End."
So basically the easiest way to win is to go around looking for people actively engaged in PVE, wait till they get a bunch of npc mobs on em, and then kill them when they are at their weakest. This is the lamest form of PVP IMO and it stinks that it will be part of DF.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for looting other players, when they win it in a fair fight, and not assisted by the NPC's. I've actually killed players the way it was described here, (in Shadowbane & DAOC) and it just felt sort of, dirty, and unclean. I certainly didn't feel good about it and when I got the inevitable private message about what a coward I was, all I could think to myself was...yeah, he's right, I suck.
Mythic had a brilliant mechanic in DAOC for this scenario, the minute another player would stick an arrow in you, your health regenerated to 100%, giving the attacked player a chance to come after you and kick your cowardly butt. The only mistake they made was not having the npc's aggro reset which I wish they would have done, because it still gave an advantage to the ganker.
This one simple change could have made DF far more fun and entertaining, (for me anyways)) now its likely to end up a gankers paradise, as many of its predecessors were. I know, there are many folks who like this sort of combat mechanic, but I have to say, it will give me pause when I consider whether or not to play DF.

Yes, they'll make TONS of changes in Beta, or just after release. Eventually we'll have gamers screaming "need game like Darkfall Pre-*insert something stupid here*" all over these Forums.
...when they finally do release, that is.
BTW: you fanbois have no reason to post what so ever.

cant expect the update to be perfect because all we want its beta starting really because anything he can say know we will find out when we are playing so lets see what happen in the next few updates. maybe a new vid in 2 weeks? city building and sieging? dno : )
Finally a company that understand that violence and boobies don't make a good game.
Keep up the great work guys.

Making a new character every 2nd week doesn't sound like a good option for me.
Skill based characters may not be gods after months or years of playing but they sure as hell will be more versitile. Ever tried Eve ? I don't know any who rerolled there, ever. It will be the same in DF. Every moment you are not using on your main, will be a moment that your competition gets an edge on you.
Dual boxing may indeed a problem but I'm not seeing a guy controlling two computers beating one guy if they are equal skilled and seasoned. The controls and dynamic environment is just too advanced.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Deja Vu?
One would think that with the events that surrounded Mourning and every other iteration of that non existant game afterwards, serious devs would try a little harder to show and not say things about their game. I'm not smack talking the devs of DFO, but if I were them I'd be very careful how I carried myself. I sincerely hope they are very serious and deliver on their word to those that are very interested in this game, but until they actually show some proof what they say isn't just garbage (not talking screenshots, or supposed ingame footage) I will remain skeptical about this game.
so when does beta start?
I thought the journal was very interesting, and it certainly paints a fun sounding game. I hope one day soon I get a chance to play it.
However, to refute your statement above, there was one very disappointing mechanic he described in DF that caters totally to cowards and griefers, and its a shame they plan on incorporating it.
Yeah, I'm a carebear, wanna make something of it?

Well the devs dont want this game to become griefers haven so let see if this is an issue in beta. Im sure the dev can make changes where it needs to be.
