I'm being serious. This game may truly be the WoW killer. Not now, but in a course of a few years. Think about it
AoC is just exploding in sales. To what I've read, pre-orders are up to 800,000. Almost 1 million subs in the first day of release. Now imagine how the game will expand? Call me a sceptic, but I truly believe this game is The One.
Comments
Oh no no... apparently (from what I've heard on these forums) it's not good.
We should go play checkers.
Lololololololololololololololololololololololololololol!
200k subs in a couple of months, then it'll probably grow slowly if Funcom doesn't do anything stupid. Healthy for an MMO but not a WoW killer. The only reason why there's so much hype now is A) the graphics and all these things Funcom is promising that sound and look good now, but who knows how long until they become normal and boring. WoW will die with 3 or 4 games' help, not The One. Alot of people will try it and might find out they don't like it or it wasn't as much as they expected. So we'll wait and see.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
Order of the White Border.
From what you;ve read (and I read them too) most people on the forums either are fanboys, people asking for computer advice, or trolls who hated the open beta because it wasn't perfect (despite being a stress test). I've read lots of forums and most of the "average gamer who wants AoC" gamers are not on the AoC forums whining or praising like it's Jesus. Sale numbers don't lie - this game has become one of the top 5 best selling MMOs in a matter of weeks.
Just wait until people see the HUGE difference in performance and content that there will be compared to the versions they've seen.
I'm tellin' ya, this game is fucking AWESOME.

I know. I was just being silly ~Even seems FC wasn't quite expecting this either

I don't care if it kills WoW, though I would be thrilled not to have their sub numbers shoved down my throat everytime I talk about another game.
Strongly agreee here. Most people are whining that the game will die because of the lag and such. Actually (idiots, read FC's posts) you've been playing clients months old that are not fully optimized. A few guildmates and personal friends are currently in the EA servers testing and they say the game runs great on all settings. Not saying it will run great for everyone but hey, a week old client is better than a 2-3 month old client now is it?
WoW killer rofl ya right.I will bet in 6 months time it will not has as many paying subs as LOTRO does anyone care to bet? Step up to the plate fanbois since this is a WoW killer you should have no worries at all .
<modedit>
Please note these are my opinions, I obviously don't think they hold true for everyone:)
Do I think the game is awesome? Absolutely. I really enjoy the combat sequences, the graphics are amazing, and TBH I think they put *alot* of work into the various quests & missions (especially the Destiny ones).
Do I think it will be a WoW killer? No.
WoW itself will be the ultimate WoW killer. There will be many up & coming 'next new things', and eventually the desire for 'that old game' will fade away, just like the days of MUDs and MUSHs. WoW will only be able to re-invent it's already borrowed wheel, until most people have finally just had enough with it.
It won't close a la E&B; it won't just disappear one day a la Ryzom.
WoW has had it's run, and I think that over the next few years, you'll see subscription numbers dissipating, but I don't think you'll ever see it go away, for a very long time (hell, EQ is still open...and Horizons:)
There are games down the line that I am looking forward to: Fallen Earth, heck even Warhammer; I retired my WoW characters just about a year ago now, and I'd never go back. What I'll be playing in the future, though, is definitely up in the air.
For now, however, AoC will be it:)
The fact that this game does not have Fk'n elves and dwarves was a selling point for me.
Market is saturated with games like this.
No wonder one million people signed up for beta.
wow didnt reach 10 million players overnight. And the game is starting to show its age.
I think Age of Conan has a real shot at doing some damage to WoW's player base.
They key though will be that most wow gamers run PC's built in 1998 or some shelf $499 system with no true video card. Thats not going to cut it for Conan.
Another key is if Conan will launch in China. 1/3 of the total world population lives there which is why WoW has such gaudy numbers.
Im predicting 1.5 million players by December of this year. It will break 2+ million if it goes to Asia. Topping wow, I cant see that happening. But I can certainly see it taking a chunk of the wow player base
Nudity and grapic violence nevers hurts either
Agreed.
The OP is so wrong.
Nothing will beat wow. If something beats wow, it will be Blizzard next MMO.
WoW runs on pretty much any machine out there... you can't beat that.

I’d like to address the raiding comment in your post.
I think AoC will be a successful game too so I’m not trying to be a hater, but AoC is a raiding game too. A lot of energy has been and will continue to be put towards raiding content. By the mere fact that it has raiding in it, it will run into the same problems as WoW in terms of people going on raids over and over to get the better equipment.
Funcom is trying to separate raiding Pve loot and Pvp loot. But I have a hard time believing there wont be a lot of cross over items like a belt that gives you a lot more hit points or boots that make you run noticeably faster. The same things are going to happen in AoC that happen in WoW, someone who raids all day while you’re at work is going to tear you a new one when you get home to pvp in open pvp or BGs.
People are going to raid to get shiny items, once they get all the shiny items Funcom will need to add even shinier items to keep them interested in the game. Whether you like raiding or not that’s part of it.
I think this is a great game. I think the bugs and things will get worked out. I also think this game is a lot more like wow than people want to believe right now.
Why are so many people eager for a "wow killer" anyway? World of Warcraft by itself is a fine game, especially pre expansion. WoW's obnoxious player base is what makes it an irritating game. So with that if a game is a "wow killer" that means the people you hated in wow, will move to your wow killer. is that really what you want?
What's interesting about this post is the author has forgotten PC online games now only acount for about 19.9 million dollars in sales compared to a 218 billion dollar gaming market. So where does the rest of the money go? It goes to gaming systems like XBox360-PS3-and WiII gaming system which now make the majority of the market.
The number of PC online games has diminished. New online games such as AoC and WAR say they are the "next generation of game" for PC. But, WoW is still the 800 pound gorilla with over 10million subsribers.
I'm not saying WoW is the best of all games, it certainly is dated, but what I am saying is the next big wave of games(even MMO's) are to be found on the XBox, PS3, and WiII.
If AoC ever comes out wtih the PS3/Xbox version, then it might be in contention for a great game.
I don't think in its present state, its going to be an 800 pound killer of WoW, or any other online game.
cmon be realistic. LOTR has only roughly 300k players tops according to estimates from various sources.
According to the latest figures, we can expect Age of Conan to have at least 600k players on launch day and probably a lot more than that in the coming weeks.
Conan on launch day has double the players LOTR has easily. I counted 31 total servers for launch day for Conan. How many servers does LOTR have total ? Something like 8 ? Not even close
OP, you have to be kidding me. X Mas time will be all about WAR and WOWLK, AOC will do well then will dip in subs at that time. The amount of people that hate WOW is WAY less then the amount that love it. WAR will be 2-4 times larger then AOC is subs and it won t even get that close to WOW. Bottom line is this game can t run on alot of comps, they made a stupid business move by doing this. 1 Mill beta sign ups isn t going to be close to what WARS will be when it hits or gets close to OB. Anyways i guess you can dream.

6 months, not 6 weeks. And I say around 200k, so if LoTRO actually grows, turns out he may be right. And if AoC has that many servers, it's because A) their servers suck and they can't hold too many people (unlikely) or they want to be prepared for, as you said, 600k+ (smart).

Have to retain them though , it won t have 600k in 3 months after release.
I agree here. I found it a great game at first. Once I leveled twice to 70 I found the constant bombardments of "lol u suck" and "rofl, n00b" from the obnoxious 10-year-olds the reason to quit.
Doesnt matter if a game can run on a lower end machine - still has to have long term appeal. AoC is more traditional in that way, healthy amount of a bit of everything and plenty of content to sustain a hardcore player. War possibly might be 2-4 times bigger, but I would wait until the world has reset for the 3rd time personally, and thats just my opinion.
I am not sure why it is important for WOW to be "killed". What difference does it make? Anyway, AOC will not kill WOW. The system requirements and the mature rating will ensure that. I do fully expect AOC to be a hit and I can't wait to get into the game.
The game will stand on its own merits just as WOW, and other MMOs have over the years.

Yes but WOW has had and will still have a long term appeal. EQ2 stated they went with higher graphic quality for this very reason i think we can see what happened there. I agree it doesn t matter if it s a WOW killer but i think we have to be reasonable on this assesment/ World resetting will not take away from the appeal at all to most i m sure. You can say the same thing about AOC and it s pvp which if i remember correctly1) you have to have a rank to attack a BK, 2. Have to wait till owning guild says you can attack , then 3. Can only bring 48 to the fight this will annoy people faster then you think
