If you put all the wolves into one pen, somebody needs to be the sheep (aka die more often). What happens is that wolves really dislike being sheep, thus they move to other servers with easier targets. End result is a empty server. These are servers that bleed their population over time, destined to become ghost towns.
For that reason I also fear that AoC's FFA PvP servers may experience the same diminishing effect as well. They will certainly be more underpopulated than the PvE servers.
I fear that the all-out-hardcore crowd is big enough to be well presented in a forum, but not big enough to keep a game server floating.
I talked about DAoC before. 1. It's RvR, your automatically sided with everyone else on your side. You don't even have to be in a group or guild. AoC is guild vs guild conflict. Theres a difference. 2. DAoC relied hard on CC and, of course that group won vs them, they were just some scrubs who just stuck to each other and stood around like sheeple while they got annihilated. Even watching the vid you could see them them going into panic mode when the aoe happened and they just ran not knowing how to handle it. To me that vid barely even looked like a fight, it seemed more like a staged slaughter. *edit* retrad that's why shadowbane added in timed attacks right? Because it was such a great feature for midnight raids, they decided to add it in. And no, i didn't play much of shadowbane, i couldn't get past the terrible gameplay and graphics. Sorry, i need a well rounded game. I want things handed to me, by me actually wanting to have skilled organized competition and sieges? Yeah. Right.
1.) Well GvG in an instanced PvP BG is lame. GvG PvP should be handled in the world. Killing your enemy guild whenever you see them and also attacking their keep, even if that means staying up late to catch them when they are weak with low numbers....and the low numbers might not make a difference if their players are skilled enough or they have an ally guild to help them.
2.) Real PvP is not organized by a computer sorting out even numbers. PvP should be organized by the players that have mapped out a plan of attack and go in not knowing how many they will be up against.
You want PvP with the safety button on. I bet you bowl with bumpers on the lane.
You are making a fundamental mistake: more time /played, doesn't guarantee more player skill. You can very well be totally incompetent at PvP, and have countless hours played in your account. So this cheap excuse of catering to the 'mature' audience with limited time to play has no base. And you know what, it is also a bit hypocritical, at least for those that choose to play on a PvP server: You want to participate in a competitive game but you don't want it to be competitive due to RL constraints? Well sorry, but perhaps you don't need a MMOG to keep you entertained but something else, less time-demanding and more casual.
Well said. Maybe everyone who plays the "I have no time, but want phat loots and casual PvP game" needs to just play a Monopoly.
Guilds defended their keeps in the constant, persistent world. Only the strong survived attacks from the weaker, grouped up guilds. You just proved to me you're not a real pvper. You're casual carebearer who wants everything without any sacrifice. Like i said i never played shadowbane because i personally found it to be terrible. Not in features, but in gameplay and graphics. That proves i'm not a real pvper? because i hated a game? In shadowbane the way you defended your keep was by having dedicated players who were good and skilled. You had players who played at all hours to help defend against the keep. Again, they changed this, i wonder why? You want your cake, but you don't want to work for it. And like a bad parent, Blizzard and Funcon give in and give you it all. I don't want to work for it? I have to laugh at that. I'll be working harder defending and attacking keeps in a organized attack and defense. Getting cheated out of something you've worked hard for, because of a exploitable game is not sacrifice. It's shitty mechanics. I say your the one that wants things handed to you, since your probably the type that can only manage to take a keep/town when you go at times where the defense is lower, rather than actually having to try vs your opponents.
Sorry i needed a real post for this not just a edit.

That's how they are, because these "hardcores" are all talk. They want to kill sheep, and avoid confrontation with wolves. It's how they truely are. I'm rolling on a pvp server, i'm going to eat the wolves, and harvest the sheep for my flock. Then when it comes time to get a keep, my flock will be more organized then the wolves who are so blood thirsty for sheep that they don't realize we just out maneuvered them.

I'll just state that DAoC was a largely imbalanced game. And that AoC is nothing like it. But that's not important to you is it?
What worked in DAoC would not work for other games.
... You want to participate in a competitive game but you don't want it to be competitive due to RL constraints? Well sorry, but perhaps you don't need a MMOG to keep you entertained but something else, less time-demanding and more casual.
There are MMOs less time demanding and MMOs more time demanding. It's all about what the target audience is. Just because people don't have an infinite amount of free time, does not mean that they don't or can't play MMOs. It just means that the companies will cut certain corners that are deemed not so important (for that particular audience) so as to present the part that is deemed really important.
How many of you used to take their bikes when they were younger, cycling for an hour or so to a remote beach with maybe one cantina offering refreshments, just so as to enjoy the sun and the sea? It didn't really matter much if it was the wilderness or it took 1 hour to go and 2 hours to return. We had the whole summer to our disposal, so the fun hours more that made up for the couple hours of minor inconvenience every day.
10-20 years forward now and we're working during summer time. We stay at work until late. If we were to take the bike again, it'll be night before we even arrive at the sea. And holidays now mean an established hotel with good services, near the sea. Maybe far away in a tropical place. Holidays have just become serious business because we no longer have 3 months but just 2 weeks. And we want to make those weeks count. It may look like food served in a platter but this is the food you can afford when the time is not on your side.
And god forbid, we never stopped liking the sea or vacations. It's just that we have so many more things to fit in along with those that are genuinly fun.
Hey guys thanks for showing up we have a guild attacking the keep in 3 hours, so go do whatever you want till 30 minutes previous so we can get ready.
Ok guys the time has come get ready for the fight.
This is how it will work 48 people are attacking when we say and we can only have 48 so 10 of you can t come.

We re doing well guys only 5 more left.
Good job guys we won , now back to doing whatever it is you were doing. I ll tell you when another guild is going to attack, it s up to us.
/sigh i mean come on this is easily one of the lamest pvp situations in a MMO i ve seen. Wheres the element of suprise, wheres the oh crap we lost the keep lets get it back now. Nope wait in line if you lost it and grind pvp.
I wonder what real pvper is. The only thing i can of is not to run even if u are terrible outnumbered. Unless of course if u mean u go around in your school/job etc pwning noobs or stealing other kids lunch money.

Ya DAOC was fun and well lets see many classes compared to 12 i think they did a decent job considering. Now with what they ve learned it will be better.

I think you are a bit confused as to what we were saying. We never said anything about skill, purely that because of work requirements, which is generally the case for the more 'mature' audiences - you simply aren't around enough to defend your keeps all the time etc. This is where time slots come in and work out well.
Don't forget you still have your normal PvP.
I think maybe in addition to the battlekeeps they need a couple of towers associated with the keep which can be fought for at any time. Whichever guild controls the towers when the main battle keep fight begins should get bonuses. This would also be useful to hire mercenaries as well.

Heres where we have to agree to disagree. DAoC and Shadowbane(daoc changed come ToA regarding this though) But they were both very shallow for end game content. There simply wasn't that much to do outside of it.
You are also ignoring the fact that the larger window a guild has for sieges the more benefits they garner from the keep right?
If the only way to keep a keep, was to log in, go fight, with no time inbetween, i honestly don't see AoC's end game lasting that long.
*edit* I don't mean that pvp would get boring, but being in competitive guilds would.
You have to realize that while your super hardcore awesome, uber amazing. And all that. That not everyone is.
I'll ask again
REGARDING AOCS PVP SYSTEM
Why would any guild ever be in a secondary position of alliance to a bigger guild, and then play lackeys to em. I can honestly see almost everyone in the alliance guilds jumping ship and joining the big guilds. Or even "mercs" they would just join the big guilds and reap the benefit, there would be no + for them going solo, or being able to be filler.
Do you really want to turn this game into a game where only 8 guilds ever consistantly have keeps? And that the only time they change hands is when one of the guilds suffers through a late night lull.
Remember we are talking AoC, not shadowbane(which removed 2 am raids). Or DAoC with realm vs realm conflict(which did still suffer from late night attacks)

We will have to see how it works out, at the end of the day they have a pretty good base game. There is no reason why the can't change the rules and how it works later on. It's pretty rare for things to play out like they are on paper, we will just have to wait and see.

True it can be changed but the fact it is in there now is my point. I don t want to buy a game, level all the way to max to get told when i can partake in a keep fight. Hell even if i m in the guild owning the keep whos to say i will be allowed to go if we had 50+ people on. I know it can change but it hasn t yet so until it does i see no point in playing another FPS for $15.
I'm sorry but, i'm a real pvper, and i like competing against equally skilled opponents, if my guild becomes the best from skill, tactics, and co-ordination. I think the pvp system is far better than rewarding because of superior numbers. *edit* SWG from my experiences, was a very dull boring world outside of points of interest... but thats just imho.

I think i ve answered it. Obviously i prefer F vs F games. I m not saying i m right and you re wrong i m just saying what i like. As far as guilds being in a secondary position all i can say is at least it gives the smaller guilds a fighting chance in a persitent end game pvp. There are ways around it but i need to go to bed. Also i never said i was super , hardcore awesome etc i just said what i like and dislike big difference. If you look back at my posts i m sure most of them say this is what i like if you like etc fine

I would have been interested if i didn't have prior obligations, my best gaming buddy is going to doomsayer along with a few of his other friends who got into EA, so me and him will be starting there together.
Lineage 2 had the best guild based castle sieges I've played (personal biased experience). I would still be playing that game right now if it wasn't for the insane grinding that was required to reach the fun part. I just didn't have the time for it, if I wanted to dedicate a few hours for sleep every day.
Lineage 2 had a 40 players guild limit with a alliance that could hold 12 guilds. So there were limits there as well (also a limit of people present in a certain game quadrant). And that in a game where everyone looked like a clone.
If this game manages to capture the thrill of L2 castle siege without the tedious level grind, I'll be a happy puppy again.
I was in Closed Beta, In Open Beta and now Im Early access. Guys I want to tell u that the game improved great...
Just a comparision...in OB sometimes I waited for loading screens some minutes....but now..In EA ...a loading screens takes max 30 sec to load an area where I wasnt before....
Then ...it loads in a few second when I come back... Instances are many in the beggining...to avoid crowding..in newbie are...Anyways...the game in level range 1-20 is more single player than multi...Its most a tutorial...a story..a great story...
After lvl 20 ...instances are verry rare ...Some dungeons needs instancing to have many ppl access to them...Remember rift system of Linerage2 ?
So After lvl 20..the world is opened something like 90%...with some zoning and instancing in some verry few areas...
The ppl are against this system...pls...ask for a buddy key when the game launch..ant after u will play the game over lvl 20 ..u could post things about game...
There is a unwrited law...:dont talk about something u dont know...!

QFT!
That's what the carebears want though and there are more of them then us.

I know it can change but it hasn t yet so until it does i see no point in playing another FPS for $15.
both parts hehe

I guess for me the thing is, even if the PvP system was a flop, I will still enjoy the journey to get to level 80 and any PvE/PvP on the way.
$15/month is pretty cheap for the playtime I will get out of it, and I already enjoy the combat.
At least we know the PvP can't be any worse than WoW :P

Sorry for my english...
Please go away troll.
If you actually read the thread, I said that i'd be fine if it was just tortage... which is the only part of the game we had access to in beta. Now that I know it covers the entire game world, yes, it is game breaking to me.
This entire post is me repeating myself just for you. Hooked on phonics works wonders, I hear.
