Wow someones really got a stick up their <explicit>.  Me, I really don't care one way or the other.  As long as I understand what the person is trying to say.  Though, I do admit I have a low tolerance for "leet speak".  I do find people that say rouge instead of rogue annoying though.

    and the lesson continues:

IV  It's "would have" not "would of".  What the heck does "would of" mean anyway?

But, as my detractors have asserted, it is permissible to use lazy language in anonymous forum posts.   Why is that?   When did it become the societal norm to decide that using correct English is just too much of an effort? (I am not speaking of people who speak English as a 2nd or 3rd language.)   I point the finger of blame at word processing spell checkers.  With their advent it no longer mattered if you could type or spell correctly, so people tended not to put much effort in learning how to do it.

Why does it bug you, obviously YOU know the meanings and in regards to each individual's sentance, you know what they're reffering to dont you? just because someone doesnt know the difference doesnt change the meaning of their sentance am i right? maybe they just dont know the difference

This thread may change that but it wont change the ammount of people that make this common mistake =p it's a shame really that little things like this put you to a point where you "cant stand" something

I despise illiteracy or intellectual laziness.  Get it right before your high school English teachers slap your parents.   It takes less than one minute to proofread (you internet generation dancing monkeys might have to look that one up) a post.  I'm not talking about typos here ... I'm talking about selecting the correct word in the first place.  And, please, do not give me that "you know what I mean" crap.  You can point to your mouth and rub your stomach and I know you are hungry ...  But it's still not English.

    Illiteracy or intelectual laziness?

How about this, I despise people who play grammar police in posts because they dont have an original thought to add to the conversation.

Just because someone may use the right word or type it the perfect way doesnt mean their idea is anymore interesting or enlightening.

I dont need eyes to understand someone that is speaking to me.
For the most of us, we hear what is being said.

And when I read I hear in my mind what Im reading? Dont you? <--By the way IM ASKING.
So, all the "theyres/theirs/wherevers" all SOUND the same to me. To get hungup on that small detail is truely trivial to me.

Looking out of the box, I beleive this is more than just a grammar issue.
Although being the academic type thinker that I beleive you to be, I beleive you would disagree.

Most high school English teachers I know teach English grammar badly, Skooma2.

For example, give me the possessive forms of the following nouns:

    Woman's

    Women's

    Chris'

    Socrates'

    Fonz'

    James'

    Jesus'

    Hobbes'

    Its

    Theirs

    Brother's

    Brothers'

To date, no high school English teacher I have met can use the apostrophe correctly in all the above cases.

    Eh?

The only part of that list that made me stop and think was the name: Fonz. I recall a "general" rule for nouns ending with a "z" to omit the "s" but I don't recall anything iron clad saying it was THE way to do things. Been awhile sense high school english so i could be wrong on that one.

EDIT: " 's " should have just been the "s"  following the apostrophe. Thought I would change for clarity.

    Illiteracy or intelectual laziness?

It's not laziness, it's just plain rudeness.
Even if it's not your first language, you can still use interpunction to make your posts readable.
I see it more and more in forums and chatrooms that people just dump garbage onto their keyboard and hit the button. The newest trend is to simply ignore all rules of interpunction and just brabble countless words and acronyms in 400 word mega-sentences.

A well structured post is easier to read, easier to understand and makes me want to read more. A huge wall of text without any structure makes me want to vomit.

If you ask me, it's a problem that's widespread, and makes reading forums a pain. English forums are even more civilized at parts, although the widespread chatspeak ("i c u 2" or whatever) is pretty painful to read. I've worked as a moderator on several german forums and even chatrooms, and i can tell you it gets worse every year.

I've seen enough people of my age starting to speak like they write, and vice versa.

Whenever my faith in humanity has recovered too much, i just visit one or two popular german chat communities, and i'm cured. *scnr*

What you describe is a rule of possessives in specific instances, guiltyone.  I also applaud kaydinv for accepting my challenge.

I’d give you the answers, but I’m not the one who is offended by bad grammar and usage.  Let the person who brought this infernal thread into the world give us the answer.  I bet you that he doesn’t know grammar as well as he thinks he does.

I don't know if it was in 07 or 06, but I remember.  Reading a case study that pointed to parallels between people that correct others, and those that have superiority complexes.  After continuing to read the post in this thread.  I don't think the college students that did the researching, were too far off.

Some people care, Some people don't. What it boils down to is that the people who care are going to spend a lot of time crying. nothing else. (oh and the people who don't care seem to care that the other do care.... so they cry too :) :P

Its really about one group of people getting another group of people to conform to the first groups set of standards.  Maybe it doesn't really  matter if somebody uses correct grammer.  Maybe I'm not intellegent enough to know correct grammer but you should be intellegent enough to figure it out.  Everybody is not

perfect.  Expecting people to know the entire set of grammatical rules is like expecting somebody to know

everything there is to know about physics, chemistry, and assembly language.
