Case in point, what the heck is "conenient" and "conienience"?

Unfortunately for you, society is always changing because thats what humans do. It's a human thing.

Eventually the entire english language will be in two forms. Street talk and "Proper English".

99% of people will speak regular english, a.k.a. City speak.

You're, Your, Their, They're, There- will all melt and form the same word because people decide it's more productive, efficient, easier, and thusly a superior language to get rid of the 3 words to form only one.

New words will form, the language itself will change, and eventually it'll be an entirely different language.

"Yo pops chummer lets go blitz and frag there glitches!"

or perhaps a step back in time in addition to the future "Ye olde Frag Face"

If this bothers you... you're not really in for it in the future. It already has happened, is happening, and proper english is a minority in the world. The vast majority of people dont know or care about "There they're or their" nor do the vast majority of people even speak english. In fact... in other languages....

Thy lv t vwls nd dnt hv ny vwls n thr wrds.

In fact... with the invention of the internet and the language of Script (such as Arabic) there are already brand new languages that have formed. Arabic language is typed in english letters as it is spoken. So to say "love you" you could type bahebek bhbk bhebek.

This could happen to english just as easily as arabic. Imagine an internet world where there is no proper language, but only typing the sounds of your language.

I allweys go tu MMORPG.COM to reed the forumms.

If you really can't take people not understanding complex english- you're really in for it because most of the entire world is against you. Just about every other language, anyone who isn't highly educated in English Grammar, anyone with English as a second language, etc. etc.

And yes, surprisingly the vast majority of the world actually DOES exist outside of the USA and high-strung grammar nazi socialites.

Simple fact, from the earlier posted link I've manged to identify half of the characters within this single post alone. I know that is off topic but doesn't change the fact that the same page was funny twice in one thread.

I despise illiteracy or intellectual laziness.  Get it right before your high school English teachers slap your parents.   It takes less than one minute to proofread (you internet generation dancing monkeys might have to look that one up) a post.  I'm not talking about typos here ... I'm talking about selecting the correct word in the first place.  And, please, do not give me that "you know what I mean" crap.  You can point to your mouth and rub your stomach and I know you are hungry ...  But it's still not English.

It's not laziness, it's just plain rudeness.
Even if it's not your first language, you can still use interpunction to make your posts readable.
I see it more and more in forums and chatrooms that people just dump garbage onto their keyboard and hit the button. The newest trend is to simply ignore all rules of interpunction and just brabble countless words and acronyms in 400 word mega-sentences.
A well structured post is easier to read, easier to understand and makes me want to read more. A huge wall of text without any structure makes me want to vomit.
If you ask me, it's a problem that's widespread, and makes reading forums a pain. English forums are even more civilized at parts, although the widespread chatspeak ("i c u 2" or whatever) is pretty painful to read. I've worked as a moderator on several german forums and even chatrooms, and i can tell you it gets worse every year.
I've seen enough people of my age starting to speak like they write, and vice versa.
Whenever my faith in humanity has recovered too much, i just visit one or two popular german chat communities, and i'm cured. *scnr*

Oh my god, you didnt capitalize your I.
You are rude and that made your post UNREADABLE.
/sarcasm off <--Oh snap. Do you understand?

I don't know if it was in 07 or 06, but I remember.  Reading a case study that pointed to parallels between people that correct others, and those that have superiority complexes.  After continuing to read the post in this thread.  I don't think the college students that did the researching, were too far off.

Hey Im all for thinking outside of the box and Im pretty sure thats what I was trying to get you to do.

Oh yeah anyways, Im not superior. Im Nappoleon :P

BTW take a peak at the link on my post (the one before your first)
    You might find that interesting.

Is it just me or are the same kids that think there genius's because they went to college as arrogant as the kids who raid in WOW with there Leet EPics.

    The similiarities are all there.

The WoW crowd strokes the epeen in front of Orgrimar.

Everything changes, including language.  Get over it.

I bet the OP's right and proper English would've been scorned as plebian in Victorian England.

I'm sure your initial post helped someone.
In my line of work correct grammar is key, while at home i relax and just toss posts up.
    My two cents.

I highly doubt most of the people who make these mistakes on the internet do not make them at work. I've seen countless memo's, documents etc. with the same mistakes commonly made.

Honestly most of the people who make these mistakes often are simply not educated enough to know the difference, and get upset when it is pointed out to them.

What I find shocking is that I have seen many people who carry a BS or MBA make these same mistakes.

People laugh these off as unimportant, and then they wonder why America is falling behind the other nations of the world in a slow but sure manner...

edit: Ever see the movie Idiocracy? People say it is a stupid movie, and it is. What they do not realize is the underlying intelligence of it.

It is making a statement that is echoed unknowingly by the illiterate masses of the forums.

The more it is acceptable and ok to be ignorant of proper spelling and word usage, the more we slide towards a world as utterly retarded as that which is portrayed in the movie.

I'm very surprised some North Americans speak fluent English and others seem to make mistake after mistake.

'Than' and 'then' are often mixed up.It's funny how different one person's writing style is compared to the next.

There must be a big difference in high schools.

Secondary language. Tertiary language. Dyslexia. Stress. Distractions. Just a few alternatives to illiteracy or laziness, an to insult people making a typo or mistake in their post(s). I'd suggest an open mind when participating on the internet. Good for your heart in the long run. ;-)

As for using shortened language like "i c u @ 4 thn" and "hw r u m8?", I believe this stems from the onset of instant written communication; internet chat rooms and cell phone messages. The intent is to write as fast as possible, and/or as much as possible within a character limit, which I imagine is a great benefit to those who raid/group (or play FPS) without voice chat. At least a whole generation learned to communicate like this in their youth, and it's a widely accepted way to write on the internet whether you like it or not (for clarity: I don't :-p). Another of those generation barriers, I guess.

I don't mind it to be honest. I won't usually correct others but I love when I get corrected since it helps me learn the Enlgish language, which is my third language after dutch and french.

I used to write a lot of mistakes, grammer nazi's help me, I <3 them.

Feel free to correct any mistakes in my post btw =).

If the post is helpful it doesn't matter if there's a few words spelled wrong.

  • Ascension08Ascension08 Member Posts: 1,980

If I'm in combat in a game and I have to type that's usually the only time I'll shorten words or use acronyms. Otherwise, I don't always use apostrophes but the least I do is spell it right. As long as these people can spell correctly outside of the game it's not too bad...the majority of people I've seen spell right consistently or use capital letters and such are roleplayers, not the common gamer.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

In my experience I'd have to say the majority of posts I've seen where the poster apparently has a third grade education involve the poster flaming someone else or calling them stupid in some fashion.

I find the vast numbers of flame posts with barely readable english flaming other people and calling THEM stupid to be rather ironic.

It doesn't bother me if a few words are misspelled or theres some incorrect grammar in a post.. sure if the whole post is full of it, it might make it a bit harder to read, but what does bother me is the attitude of some people on the internetz that seem to think they can talk down to people and question their intelligence because of a few lines of bad grammar or spelling.

I don't get it, either they are English teachers and are used to correcting the errors, or they get kicks from trying to prove to themselves that even though they live in their parents basement (unemployed, not showered for weeks and wearing a beer stained tank top with cake crumbs all down it) they aren't failures and are more intelligent because they have better spelling/grammar skills than some random Joe on the internet, who is probably only 15 anyway.

I'm not saying this is anyone in this thread! just in general about some individuals I've encountered on my internet journey's that just make me think "WHY bother!?" even if you correct one guys spelling/grammar, chances are he/she will take it as a flame or a derogatory comment and won't even take on board what's been said and will be posting with the same mistakes 5 minutes later anyway!.
