It amazes me there's actual "concern" for a hype meter.
Yes, I intend to hype up Darkfall.
No, I do not intend to de-hype any other game.
Most people in the Darkfall forum have been against de-hyping and we are just being honest when we are hyping up the game. I've never felt so much excitement for a game before, here's an outlet to show this. I'm sure that's what many other Darkfall followers are thinking. We have been introduced to MMORPG.com and we have something to hype up, that is all.

It still amazes me that people are willing to place absolute faith into something they have never played, based on 33 screenshots, a video, and some words from the company trying to sell them a product. You have to remember, they don't care about you, they care about the bottom line.

I wouldn't say it was faith, I'd say it was hope. The developers have bigged up Darkfall a large amount and a lot is expected from it, it has taken a long time even to get somewhere near Beta too which indidcates that a lot of time has gone into thinking about every aspect of the game. I like all the ideas of Darkfall and hope that it lives up to my expectations, it hasn't shyed away from creating it's own high ideals regarding the game, so just hope they follow through with them.

If the games you are talking about have enough hype to be on there, im sure its fanbase will hype it up more. DF's hype has gone up in huge amounts the last week, and i guarentee you that is not because of some plan on the official forums alone...it is because people are actually seeing the video, reading up on it, and discovering a game they would like.

Yup you are 100% correct. Since people cant seem to fathom the limitations of an indy developer...and since AoC and D&L have touched so many gamers in the wrong places...a lot of the community just wrote DF off and hyped it down accordingly without even waiting to see if it pulled through.
So yea, now that others who needed proof that DF existedn have gotten it, they have certainly hyped it up accordingly....because...that is what the hype meter is measuring!!!

If Darkfall was in the top 5 simply because it's hype had gotten pushed high enough, that would be one thing. But the only reason it is in the top 5 is because DF fans purposefully trashed the other games ratings to get darkfall up there. That isn't right. They did to those other games exactly what the people you are complaining about did to Darkfall. But to you, when people trashed darkfall they were wrong and stupid, but when darkfall fans trash everything else to help darkfall, it's working as intended. Typical fanboy.

Lol, you are a fool. I wouldn't care if it was WAR, or any other new game coming down the pipe, if they only showed a videos and screens I wouldn't have absolute faith in it. Pictures and videos may catch my interest, but I won't defend it like its my child.
But, if you say had played the game, you could have an educated opinion on the game because you played it! You haven't played it yet still have absolute faith in it, are you new to the MMORPG genre or something? Have you not been burned by enough by broken promises to teach you a lesson? Or are you so desperate for a game to exist to meets your wants that you are willing to believe anything?
I am NOT saying DF is going to be bad, it may be the best game ever. I am just annoyed by the fact people are rabidly defending as if they played it and it was the best thing since the beginning of time.

I hyped Darkfall a 10. I also hyped some other games on the top at 1. That's how hype works. I'm so hyped for Darkfall that I hardly even look at the other games, therefore my hype for them is a 1. By the definition of hype. If you want your cute little pansy game to get on the top 6, bring the goods baby. You can't get on the top with a following of 100 people and stale features, because games with REAL hype, and a REAL following are going to crush you merciful-lessly o.O.

i don't really see what's so wrong with them hyping a game they like.. that's exactly what the hype meter is for. it's a little disturbing that they would give a game a 1 just to make their game look better, but apparently people are giving darkfall 1's just to make it look worse, not to mention all the 1's it probably got from the vapor trolls.. so i can't say i blame them all that much.
it's because of shit like this that the hype meter fails.. it's just not very accurate imo. it's supposed to inform gamers what MMO's are coming out that they might want to keep their eye on, and ultimately increase the number of betafags™ interested in new games, which is a good thing. but really, all it's apparently done is promote flamewars and fanboi bullshit.
i think that's where everything falls apart.. it's just as lachrymose said, it's become a war between fanboys moreso than a tool to lead curious gamers to these upcoming games.

How is warring fanbois not hype? Fanbois are the ones who are hyped for the game. If a game has more hype (i.e. a larger following, and more fanbois) its going to move up on the list and appear near the top. Just because you see some niche game in development and you are REALLY looking forward to this game but it doesn't have a large following yet, doesn't mean it should be high on the hype list or the system is broken. The hype list is not a place for people to find games they may like, its a place to rank the most hyped games, i.e. games who already have a large following... and through this system, people may subsequently find a game that they haven't heard about that they may want to try.
what i was more concerned with is people giving games 1's just because it's competition for a game they don't like. i know that WAR has more fanboys, so if a lot of them give darkfall a 1, it's just making darkfall look like an awful game to anyone here who comes to the forums. or, say all the darkfall fanboys gave WAR a 1 just because they wanted darkfall to be hyped more, it would look like WAR isn't such a great game, so anyone who may not be very familiar with won't really notice it.
i agree, it's fine for fanboys to hype the games they like, but seriously, very few games deserve a 1, and there's no reason for so many people to be giving WAR or darkfall a 1, even if you don't like either of them. but i think that's what's happening, and this thread is proof if it.

You think that there is very few games that deserve a 1, I think that if I'm not hyped for a particular game, i.e. I don't really care if it releases or not, and I'm not particularly following it, then it deserves a 1. Who says your philosophy on hype is more correct then mine?
You seem to still think that a hype meter is a judgement of how good a game is. Hype meter isnt judging the features, its judging the HYPE of the game. If everyone rebelled against Darkfall and gave it 1's and it dropped from the list, it would be justified, because the majority of people aren't hyped for Darkfall.
The standings now are pretty correct. I checked out the Alexa traffic rankings for some top games. Darkfall is at 40k, Chronicles of Spellborne is at 100k. Darkfall is more hyped then CoS, therefore it deserves a higher ranking. Warhammer is at 7k, and Aion is right up there with it, therefore they are obviously more hyped. Traffic ranking = hype. The more traffic your website is bringing in, the more people are hyped for it, hearing its name, checking it out.
tl;dr version : Hype isnt a game ranking like the actual game ranking system. Its a ranking on HYPE. It doesn't really have a basis from game features and things.
I sincerely believe that the very existence of a massive hype meter implies that those who want a game to succeed will dehype games that are in the way of its success. People who play Age of Conan inevitably did it, people who want Warhammer probably dehype WoW and AoC without even having constructive criticism (not that constructive criticism isn't possible). To believe that Darkfall fans dehyping games to improve their own game is a unique occurrence of this sort of behavior is absurd and naive. This is how the market works, it is how advertising works, hell it's how the American presidential campain is run.
I will say specifically that I came here to hype Darkfall, and on my way out I'll probably have a thing or two to say about games that I have opinions on, but I have no intention of dehyping any games to make Darkfall look better, and there are plenty of others like that too. Don't let extremists color your view of things.
Well tbh more important to me is how the Darkfall community has acted here,I am with mike470 on this as that I have lost alot of respect for it.
I have followed this game since I 1st seen an article on IGN in August 2001 and through all the vaporware the best game ever sort of posts I always kept my eye on it.
Now if you look at the thread on the DF forums with alot of comment's how everyone on this site are basically idiot's and wanting them to join the game as it is "more newbs to gank" and wanting ppl to hype a game 1 just so DF rises more gives me serious doubts about not the game but just as important the ppl I will be playing with,In mmo's if the community fail then so will the game.
I know alot of ppl will say"it is only a small minority"but unfortunatly I dont know everyone personally that will play so player's will be judged on this"minority" especially when they are on the DF board's and only a couple of player's seem to be asking them to stop this childish act and the majority loving it.

It doesn't look too bad to me. I looked over the thread before posting and there were only one or two posts talking directly about the MMORPG.com community. Most of the posts were about whether or not it's worth hyping the game up. The hardcore vets look like your typical loveable douchebags you'll get with any forum that's been around for a long time, it's not anything unusual in my eyes.

well, you may be right. in which case, this entire thread is pointless because darkfall fans aren't "trashing" the hypemeter, they're just expressing their hype for a game they are interested in. it's just very hypocritical that the OP of this thread probably gave darkfall a 1.

I was referring to the thread on the Darkfall forums which called for fans to hype it up on MMORPG.com. I didn't read this thread through, if that's what you mean. Also, Darkfall fans being douchebags on a different forum is a different animal from the actual Darkfall community.
The way i see it is that everything is working as intended.
The hype system is there so that people who are following the game can hype their game up to give it a better rating, ratings which will result in better a community and revenue for that game, which will generally mean the game will have better post launch development (generally)
if people start abusing the Hype system there will always be a backlash, its the way we balance ourselves out, if one group decides they are going to rate all other games down so their game goes up then people who are following the games they have de-hyped, will get a little tiffed off and start dehyping other games as well. It only take a few people to start everyone off in some sort of hate war, which will only really go away when the game comes out, but then each side will start leaving reveiws etc etc, snowball keeps rolling.
The best thing for users looking for a new game would not be to look at the superficial ratings, but actually read the comments and dig through and see what people are saying, not just the number they have attached in their comments, for example if you read any games reveiws in it you find loads of fanboys and flames and all that, but you will also find the reveiws by people who actually took the consideration to play the game, or in the case of hype, those who have researched the game propperly before they made their judgement, not just going "LULZ DF IS TEH BESTEST!" or "THIS GAME ARE NO AOC!".
In fairness, its really down to the people, if you all wanna run around being tools hyping and de-hyping games on a whim, you really don't deserve to be hyping at all.

you know... it's looking like there's a symantec problem more than anything. some people think hypemeter means that if you aren't interested at all in a game, you give it a zero, and rightfully so. others seem to think the hypemeter is indicitive of how fun the game looks, which is probably wrong, otherwise they'd call it a "fun-meter" or something along those lines.
the problem i have is people de-hyping a game like darkfall, not because they aren't interested in it, but because it's competition for the game that they love and adore so much. some of these people probably don't even bother to do a little research on the game, yet they still give it a 1 because they only care about their own. you shouldn't hype or de-hype something unless you know a little bit about it. if you haven't bothered researching a game, it's stupid to give it a 1 because you "aren't interested in it"... of course you won't be inetersted in it if you know nothing about it.
im on the fence i like DF it seemed like a nice game when it was planed christ... whats it been 5yrs now or something..
BUT the new video really kind of turned me off. im not a big fan of super godly graphics i mean i still play 2.5D games at times and we all know how craptasticly mcCrappy they can be for graphics n game play.
but the video for DF really didnt make me want to play it more..
they look worse then HL1 did when it came out in 07 THOUGH at the time they rocked for graphics..
i might still try DF but really they need to boost the textures and animation on it. sure they can claim its do to the system eng or whatever but most mmo'ers now days are noobs who started with WoW so graphics mean the world to them.. im old school i like gameplay but i do like some niceness in graphics..
i never hyped it nor do i plan to cause personally hype means as much as giving a big mac to a vegan...
if the community cares sooo much about how hyped DF or other games are... they are clearly retarded noobs who should stick to WoW cause a game doesnt require hype meters to say how good or bad it is...
