I will make this brief before I goto work for the day.
1) You are comparing WOW's primary focus to WAR's secondary focus. Yes WOW would have the edge in this, but concider this, WAR has 6 complete storylines from beginning to end, while WOW has individual starting areas, you are funnelled into 2 basic lines (each continent) and share the story everyone else, instead of each race having a complete story from beginning to end.
2) I think we have a different definition of grinding. I think of grinding as doing the same thing repeatitively for a reward. After Chapter 1, I could do everything once (even the senerios) and not have to repeat a thing to get to the next area.
3) I tend to look at it this way. They do not waste my time having to repeat things in order to get something useful for my character (because I got a reward designed for someone else). I can choose to repeat things I find fun, but not out of necissity in order to get something useful.
To end, I think we can agree to disagree because I think the quests, rewards are solely focused on the character and his development conciderably more than WOW is. Them handing you something that is completely useless for you as a "reward" for doing something is nothing more than a slap in the face for your work. If you appriciate those type of things, I wish you well. WotLK is about to slap WOW players once again, and more are going to thank them for it and ask for more. I am not one of them.
I find WoW's brilliance to be rooted in the MMO market as well as the genre itself.
In order for an MMO to be successful now, that MMO needs to be like WoW. This obviously was Mythic's take on making a game that a lot of people will subscribe to, and this also seems to be the case for a number of already released and soon-to-be released MMO's. To garner the subscription numbers these MMO's need to find a way to be as good as or better than WoW which generally results in a small lapse in WoW numbers followed by a surging return when said game reaches failure. WoW is brilliant because Blizzard is brilliant and there's no denying that. Sadly the entire genre suffers in originality due to it's unprecedented success.
Yep. Can't agree with you anymore. I can't wait until a new game comes out that overrides WoW. I'm not saying it because I necessarily "hate" wow. It's because I'm ready for a new genre of games. I'm sick of the cartoon feel. I want some real graphics.
It'll take time. Warhammer had the chance because of all the hype but just didn't live up to it. GREAT game that I'm going to continue playing, however; won't pass Wow. I'm looking for a game to surpass wow and takes it's subscribers. That'll be hard as hell to do because wow players are filled with those which wow was their first game, lol. Which means when they go to play games like lineage 2 or any new games coming out such as darkfall or mortal online, they are hit by the differnt graphic feel. However, look at the ps3 or the 360. We look for good graphics on games on the console systems. I really wish a game would come out on pc that's an mmorpg that blows my mind with graphics and has the best gameplay out. That game will be way better then wow.
I hope they aren't overhyping darkfall. I am not overhyping it myself. Nope, not again. I'm watching the forums once a week on dark fall and that's it. It should be a good game though. The graphics look nice and they look like a mix of l2 and wow. They look very shiny. I like clear graphics and less cartoon like graphics.

You gotta understand brosky that no matter how long you wait before video games stop looking like cartoons you will have been dead for 100 years. Seriously, even in ten years, video games will be flat screen representations of reality, hence cartoons by deifnition almost.

I realize this. However, look at Madden 09 for example on the ps3 or 360. On a LCD HD tv it looks OMG. The players look almost realistic. See but I'm referring them as to real players in life which they are, so it's unfair. I'm comparing them to people in life which is visual to the eye. Graphics are getting so close to looking less cartoony and more realistic. I'm just looking for more games like Lineage 2. The clear graphic type of games that have a more realistic feel.
By the time games reach realistic it'll be the year 2200, if the world isn't done with by then. By that time we'll have flying cars and I'll be long gone.

Have a look at graphics from ten years and compare them to what we have now.
When making such a comparison it should be obvious that graphics are improving much faster than you are imagining.
It's going to 5-10 years before this happens, not 100 years after he's dead.
In fact the latest generation of console games are nearly there now.
OP - I disagree with your post on almost every point you've made. While I can appreciate that you have veiled your WoW fanboi status behind carefully chosen words, I can't agree with anything you've presented here.
If WoW took the first step down any road in the MMO genre, it was the road to dumbed down simplicity. I have no problem with making a game more accessible to everyone, but it seems that you yearn for a classic EQ style MMO. Its really ironic that the arguments you are making here are the exact same arguments that EQ fanbois made years ago.
"I did not regret buying WAR at all. But I probably won't resubscribe and will take WotLK instead. I don't mean to insult WAR - I'm just stating that its design goals and philosophy doesn't really suit my playing style."
This is by far the most intelligent comment you made in your post. The WAR philosophy doesn't match your playing style. Thats fine. Unfortunately, based on your points above, I would have to say WoW doesn't match your play style either. You should have titled your thread "How WAR made me realize what a subtly brilliant game EQ is"
Your first point "1) The combat just doesn't "feel" good."
I've felt the same about every game I've played since AC darktide. The combination of collision detection, location specific damage, and user input on every single attack is something that has seen no peer before or since. Really WAR combat is WoW combat with additional features (like combustion et all).
Your second point "2) Questing is so easy it's trivial."
Firstly, its obvious that you never leveled beyond the first tier. You're not really qualified to discuss the complexity or depth of quests when you do so from a distinctly "newbie zone" perspective. If you had a more robust perspective of WAR then you would realize how rediculous this statement is. WAR introduced the revolutionary concept of the public quest, and added another layer of complexity with infamy, public loot rolls, and chapter based rewards. The quest system of WAR is lightyears beyond that of WoW.
TBH I've already invested more time in this reply than the OP warrants. While you made a number of points, using acceptable grammar and a serviceable vocabulary, the argument you make is lacking in depth.
You're entitled to your opinion. I'm forced to disagree given that my perspective is vastly different from your own. I've been playing MMOs since they were invented (see Meridian 59) and I have enjoyed WAR unlike any game that has come before. To take a different spin on your own words, the design goals (make the game fun to play) and philosophy (make PVP a central element to gameplay) suit my play style to a T. I never liked the EQ grind tedium. While you were playing in your sandbox I was slashing throats on Darktide. Now I'm melting faces in a scenario while you enjoy your Tetris mini-game style grind fest.
More power to you. Given your comment:
"In WAR I can just stand around in scenarios or RvR and half-assedly do some damage and healing and I'd come away with a healthy stream of points."
I'd have to be honest and say I'm glad you won't be staying. People like myself don't log into scenarios for the "points." We join scenarios because like to compete, and we like to win. Haveing someone like yourself standing around doing a half-assed job because you still get your points is an insult to the rest of us who are doing our damnedest to fight and win.
WAR is a good game, no doubt about it. It has some great ideas to contribute. But its problem is not that it lacks big ideas. Rather, it falls short in the details and the polish that makes WoW so fun to play (or even to grind).
I stopped reading after this.
Dye(2 layers)
Guild Heraldry(out of a list of 100s of different symbols and color combinations)
Guild Cloaks(bears your heraldry)
Guild Banners(displayed in the capital cities for the top 4 guilds on the server)
Guild Standards(can be carried into battle, and planted in the ground and gives various bonuses like +3% exp gain, action regeneration +10%)
Random ToK unlockables around the world(found a goblin on an island which gave me a trinket that makes a train noise and poofs smoke)
WAR is a good game, no doubt about it. It has some great ideas to contribute. But its problem is not that it lacks big ideas. Rather, it falls short in the details and the polish that makes WoW so fun to play (or even to grind). Yes, I believe the WoW comparison has to be made. WAR is clearly influenced by WoW and is simply begging for that comparison. Now, on to the points: 1) The combat just doesn't "feel" good. I think it's a combination of subpar sound effects and the poor animation not synchronizing well together. Grinding mobs with my warrior priest is half as fun as tearing through mobs with my warrior in WoW. Here's the thing. I'm a big fan or games like Minesweeper and Tetris. They are addictive not because they have groundbreaking graphics or epic ideas but because they are satisfying. There's just that "click" when you clear a line. Just like how combat in WoW simply had that satisfying feel to it - from the charge to the devastate. Everything clicks. It feels like a mini-game in its own way. I actually like grinding motes in WoW. It's therapeutic just like playing Tetris. No joke. 2) Questing is so easy it's trivial. I don't feel like any of it matters because I can get much better experience doing scenarios anyway. I know you will say that's the point but it really trivializes the feeling of exploration. The WoW quests ARE time-sinks but it is because of that that completing a quest actually feels like an accomplishment. As it stands, the current ultra-fast questing system is fine were it not for 1). Grinding is no fun, either with a Black Orc and especially with my Warrior Priest (my main). 3) WAR is basically an amusement park, where you are ushered through a set path and wait in line for the rides. Everything is geared toward your satisfaction - the experience, renown points keep rolling in, at every moment upgrades geared specifically for you are shoved in your face, the PQs dole out rewards suitable specifically for your class. The game basically bends over backwards to make sure you, the gamer, is having a good time and feeling rewarded. Frankly, it feels a bit patronizing. WoW is a time-sink and is also linear, etc. But its brilliance lies in its ability to create the illusion that it is free and open. The difficulty (i.e. raids and the harder 5-mans) and grind and time commitment needed to advance in WoW is not NECESSARILY a bad thing - just like accomplishing things in real life, raiding takes effort (PvP is a different matter). In WAR I can just stand around in scenarios or RvR and half-assedly do some damage and healing and I'd come away with a healthy stream of points. I did not regret buying WAR at all. But I probably won't resubscribe and will take WotLK instead. I don't mean to insult WAR - I'm just stating that its design goals and philosophy doesn't really suit my playing style. To summarize: WAR feels contrived. The gameplay feels like the game world is designed for the gamer and not your character, if that makes any sense. In my view of MMORPG history, WAR represents another step taken on the road away from UO and EQ (when MMOs were a fringe hobby). Now it's all about instant gratification, FPS style. I'm interested in MMOs for the stories - both the ones written in-game and the ones you make for yourself. Of course, many of us are looking for a game that returns to the roots of the genre - a sandbox, no hand-holding game that takes commitment and effort to learn. A game that has an element of risk and you might actually get screwed over by other players or if you get unlucky. WoW took that first step on the road, of course, but it disguised it so well that the game felt perfect. Speaking of which, I really should go get my warrior alt to 70 in time for WotLK. This is not a flame nor is it a review. Just some thoughts. But feel free to disagree and get angry like some in this community likes to do.
---
ADDED: To elaborate: I think the Tome of Knowledge is brilliant. The idea of tracking quests, lore, exploration is fantastic. The ToK would fit a game like WoW perfectly. But in WAR, when there are so many mindless 3-minute quests the greatness of the ToK idea doesn't fit with the forgettable nature of the quests themselves. The ToK feels less like a record of what I've done as it does a record of what I don't know I did but might read up on afterwards if I'm bored. You know what I mean? I would say that WAR contributed a few genuine innovations to the genre: Public quests - though the 3-step pattern in WAR is far too predictable, but the concept can be expanded on in future games Tome of Knowledge - a logical next step for MMOs that I'm sure Blizzard will catch onto (in WotLK) Permanent RvR-style war-effort effects on your capital city - of course this is actually due to DAoC Collision detection - minor but of great tactical significance
LOL anytime you have a post that is more than 2 paragraphs long you know you dialed the WOW fanbois hotline. Im not even going to bother to dig through 1/2 the garbage your spewing out. The Facts that I have been read through and have seen in other games long before WOW suggest that WOW has copied other mmo's, not the other way around. It is kind of hard to suggest that WOW influences any games when alot of WOW's content came from games like warhammer. Plus it isn't hard to be a great game when it can be played on a commodore64, and that pretty much means as technology gets better WOW will see their sub numbers diminish over time.
Sigh..another one of these. You invite flames, and both trolls and fanbois with these kinda threads OP. I find both sides full of bs tbh. The fans say WAR is damn revolutionary. This is bullshit ofcourse. WAR do the same thing WoW did, copy stuff from other mmo's, mix it up a little and call it their own. Nothing wrong with that, but when the fans go about how new everything is, all they do is display their own ignorance. The TOK and PQ aint a first one in the mmo world. Neither is leveling through PVP and RvR.
The trolls go about how WoW-like WAR is. This is also ridiculous. WoW stole the design and a big chunk of lore from Warhammer. The other similarities you see(configurable UI, shortcut bars, aggro mechanics etc.) is the same in most mmo's out there. The only thing I think WAR did new considering mmo's is solid characters, but that neither genious or revolutionary. It's a natural evolution of mmo's. They will continue to copy eachother and refine the ideas in the years to come.
Sometimes I wish mmorpg.com police their forums alot harder than they do now and remove useless posts and threads. We've seen alot of those lately, usually WAR fanbois and trolls duking it out verbally. It's quite hard to find the one relevant post when you have to read through a mountain of fanboi/troll nonsense.

I've seen some really long posts by WAR fanbois too, actually....but I digress.
It's pretty rude to not read someone's post, and then expect them to read yours. But, that's not really what I wanted to say here either. LOL
Warhammer is not the "original" MMORPG, neither is WoW. ALL games have "borrowed" and "refined" ideas from other games, and WAR is no exception to that either. Before PC gaming was all the rage (back in "the day") we read BOOKS. Tolkien was hugely popular and as successful, from a literary standpoint, as most of these MMOs. I suppose you COULD say that ALL MMORPGs "borrowed" the fantasy world's of Tolkien. But you know....Tolkien's ideas probably came from somewhere else too. Suffice it to say, it's pretty hard to trace MMORPG ideas back to their VERY initial birth. Any developer that claims they have NOTHING in their game that wasn't used somewhere before...would be outright lying.
Also...pretty much ALL games' subscriber bases "diminish over time." If you think that won't happen to Warhammer and every OTHER MMO as well....you're fooling yourself. It happens for many many reasons including progressing technology, boredom, financial changes, etc., etc., ad infinitum. On the other hand, there are still people playing the original EQ and Ultima Online. When a game is "good," it's going to have a long life, whether it has 10 million subscribers, 500k subscribers, or 250k subscribers. There are games that just have amazing longevity, and only time will tell which of the more recent MMOs will survive long term.
Im happy to say that WAR is a great game, but Im starting to think its not quite for me. I'll be heading back to Lich King. Whilst Im enjoying the Public quests and seeing this and that, Im not really enjoying the combat 'feel' as I do in Wow. I also enjoy grinding through mobs in Wow (guilty pleasure). WAR's animation and combat 'feel' just doesnt sit right with me.
Others have stated it feels fine, no problem..enjoy what is a quality game.

This guy is spot-on. And damn Mythic for producing a game specifically designed to please the gamer. Lord knows I want to play a game that is only fun 50% of the time, so I can better appreciate that 50%.
I'd like to mention epic-quests which can strech a couple hours and take you across many areas while possessing a story with some actual meat to it.
Warhammer is not the "original" MMORPG, neither is WoW. ALL games have "borrowed" and "refined" ideas from other games, and WAR is no exception to that either. Useless history: MMO's can be traced back to the first MUD's(multi-user dungeon). Some example of such would be Monster, with it's spinoffs, or the very first mud ever made, back in the mid 70's or something called Adventure. That was the birth or MMO's today as we know them. So they can be traced all the way back to the beginning. The very first graphical mud was Neverwinter Nights I think. After that, alot of spinoffs where made for all the different systems back then and they continued to build and becore more complex as time went by.
Another useless history: Tolkien borrowed alot from folklore and myths. One example is that the elvish language is a mix between finnish and welsh. Another useless fact is the orcs, that is based on some old italian and french fairytales which Tolkien mucked about with. He mixed and borrowed from alot of old tales and myths to create his world. So in a way you can trace his works back to the old fairytales and myths as it's loosely based on them.
Anyway, now that I emptied myself of some useless info I've picked up over the years, you can get back to arguing about which mmo the best
Why are you getting so upset? No one is making a personal insult; just stating an opinion (see I did that just for you : ) ). You'd think that folks could learn to ignore something like this.
I'm not upset. Only a bit irritated over this thread.
It's quite a di** move to slap threads like this onto the board to be honest. "This game made me realize what a brilliant game WoW is" (for short)
That makes it just sound like "This game is so sub-par, and it looks like cra* compared to WoW.
I think anyone with at least a little trace of sence in their mind understand that WoW is so polished. But IMO it's just a very very very very polished ROCK instead of WAR which I think is a uncut diamond. That is my compareance.
Request that the thread gets moved then, or don't reply to it and let the thread die. : )
Of course the OP is saying WoW is a better game in comparison with his/her experience with WAR. In other threads you decry that 'trolls' do nothing but post simple comments; well here's an example of well explained reason why the OP doesn't like WAR and you reply in your first post ... well like a troll by your own definition lol.
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
You have some good points. I however, feel that for once we are thrown into the fun of the world created right away and that so many moments revolve around you specifically as you play that it makes it enjoyable every time I log in.
I think the world may feel a bit linear to you due to the pairings and limited land mass for release. In truth, the game is larger in size than WoW. I love the thought that in the future updates and expansions, we will see the world expand and make it feel VERY mmorpg. I mean, the size of the War's lore world is the size of our own world, I think that leaves it open for some pretty big expansions. Each area gets bigger than the last and I like that.
Sure it could use a bit more rpg element but I think that's mostly due to the fact that at release, the game is escentially a pvp/rvr game, let expansions fill in some of the PVE desire. PVE is actually pretty decent in this game, it's just that ht is dwarfed by the fun factor of scenarios, rvr and PQ's. I believe that this game has enough different gamestyle options that when combined, it makes for an overall amazing experience. I don't see it as an amusement park, but I can see where you might think that. I play on a RP server so I dont get the feeling that its just a big fun house for gamers, theres more depth. Anyway, enjoy whatever game you play, even if its quite a few years old and more of the same old. Like you said, if Tetris is fun, it's fun..
..and this thread continues to grow. Here I am contributing to the growth of this useless topic, haha.
I just think point blank that no game right now has my attention as the next generation game. Wow got the most subscribers because of it's ease of game play. Again, I hate wow it's too gear based. Warhammer to me is alot of fun. However, has alot of problems. Granted I'm sure they're working on them. Buggy casting, tons of lag (intel core 2 dueo processsor t5550 with nvidia geforce 8700 m gt 2gb of ram. Never experience lag on any other games), and the graphics aren't super impressing. However, I will say Warhammer is alot of fun and pvp alone makes the game worth playing. If the pvp system sucked I wouldn't be playing. I just turned level 12. I just joined a guild, and now I find the chat system coming to life on Warhammer. Enjoying it even more now. Loving the Zealot class. Still alot to learn. I think Warhammer is a game I'm just going to take my time on. No rush. I got on for 3 hours today and knocked out 2 levels 10-12....not too bad haha...
Warhammer does take up WAY too much memory while it's running hence the lag.
I'm just waiting on a game to actually give me the WTFOMGTHISROX feeling when it's released. Last game that did that sadly was Wow..... =/ I want a real game. Realistic graphics. Fun pvp gameplay. Mass pvp wars with 100's on each side. The same game giving war on the oceans around the land. You can have boats, houses, and every place isn't safe. The players make the world. Maybe I'm looking for too much. =/ I just want a new genre of games. I don't want to grind for hours. I don't want cartoon graphics. I want nice crystal clear graphics where the world looks realistic and so do the players. I want to hop on for a few hours a day and enjoy playing with others and getting some pvp action in. I want to have the choice of pvping or going into dungeon like areas to gain items. I don't want the game to be item based either. I only want the items to give small bonuses and attributes to help ur player...giving ur player a little boost. Again, maybe I'm asking for too much.
Maybe a sim city mmorpg would be fun. I hear they are working on one. http://www.citiesxl.com/ That's a new genre of games.....hopefully that goes well.
No game out has my full attention. I'll just continue playing Warhammer and Lineage 2 while waiting for the next game. Darkfall? eh...maybe....

Sadly I haven't had that initial feeling since SWG. Imo, that's largely due to MMOs becoming more popular. Back in the day you were just amazed that other people were playing along with you, let alone innovative game mechanics and art. Until the genre makes a substantive leap, this type of initial reaction will be few and far between.
Having said that, I do enjoy MMOs a great deal; just that 'WTFOMGTHISROX' feeling at release no longer exists.

I agree with your description of WAR as it does indeed seem to throw endless rewards in the players direction without any real effort being required to obtain them. It is very clearly an amusement park and isnt really intended to be a world you can explore as such. You clearly have not even scratched the surface of what WAR has to offer. It does take a lot of effort to get special armor sets, tome tactics and epic quest that reward you with unique items and take you through 3 tiers, various dungeons and have you kill hero mobs. Not to mention the brilliant story on these quests. These quests have to be uncovered by traveling to off the road places and exploring the world. There is tons of things to discover in places normal quests do not take you, you just need to explore. Get the level 25-27 blue set and tell me again WAR throws rewards at you.
"Give players systems and tools instead of rails and rules"
I get your point but there is no point to make some review of how your gonna go play wow again. Let us enjoy warhammer online and you go play the same old grind game thats been around for 3 years. I am a ex wow player and this game may be a little buggy but this stuff will get fixed. WOW is making another ex pac making all the tier 6 and brutal glad gear useless again so you can grind and do it all over again and again and the cycle will continue until the game finnaly dies off prolly in another 3 years or so.
And why do you think that WAR will come up with something different? After the original game is depleted, it will add on some more of the same( new gear, few new spells, new levels, maybe new quests and scenarios)....
Thats the regular life cycle of every single MMO...its weird that you are putting all that as "only WoW" feature....
Wow, I couldn't have put it better myself. Even though all the trolls that instantly become active if you trash talk their game will come out. I whole heartedly agree with your statements and as much as I wanted to think this was the greatest MMO I spent 50 bucks on, its falls very short of that.

I wish I could say WAR made me realize how bad of a game wow is, but I figured that one out a LONG time ago. All on my own.

The OP was interesting and on the money as well.
Everquest had solid characters.
The original poster is way off base here.
