On the first paragraph I just explained what I understood from whickersham, since you asked a question:)
Sorry if it seems I don't understand you, I do understand your train of thought though, since you are not the first I have met that had such a set of beliefs and ideas.
Anyway to your question yes it is possible to hate humanity in general yet loving your family, it's part of the human mind to be able to hold widely opposing beliefs. I am sorry but I don't remember the medical word for it in english, but I can look it up for you if you want. The problem is that at some point such things became blurred and really take their toll. Other than that I never said that you can't love your family, but I made a hypothesis based only on what you said, nothing more and nothing less. My bad there since I should have asked more questions, rather than getting a good exercise by jumping to conclusions.
The philosophy you say is right in an ideal state. But it's utopistic at best. For example you say you manipulated to get your way. Ok most people do that to a greater or a lesser degree. Isn't that a mask you are wearing? Would you insult a cop even if you felt like it? no that's another mask. Would you cut in front of someone obviously stronger than you? All people wear masks with no exeptions, as situations arise. The problem rises when they forget to take them off or just make themselves believe they never wore them.
Individualism at best is very hard to maintain but so is being part of the crowd. Both have their merits. And both sides hate each other since they are diametrically opposed by nature.

Does black define it's existance by the simple contrast of white, or is it a state of it's own, and it's contrast simply an aspect of it's existance?
You seem to think that all would be white, unless effort were made to BE black. (or vice-versa) I disagree, and put forth that black and white are naturally occurring phenomena.
Stating that I am one does not mean that I am the other in disguise. However, your insistance to the contrary is quite annoying, and further gives proof that all things are not either black or white. I always chuckle when I read some seriously immature thoughts on man kind. That we're just one negative force and t hat is is. It shows a person in a certain light. I think the greatest irony in this thread is that you and your family have simply become what you hate, your selfishness is part of the problem. Yes you may take care of everything BUT your fellow human, but does that make you any better? No it doesn't, its the people that you have screwed throughout your life that may turn to the things you detest, the people you hated and despised that turn to the things you detest. you may have been involved directly or indirectly. Originally I had just intended to agree with the OP, not hijack this post. I've said my bit, and I could give a rat's ass what you think of me. Go shopping for a new cell-phone or something.
But know this...when this economy collapses, and all Hell breaks loose, and it becomes survival of the fittest, it is people like me who will be having one Hell of a good time.

You can plant all the flowers you want and say all the stupid words about hope and happyness. We are a pathetic bunch of apes with a bit of intelligence and a minimum of empathy that turns into hate or indiference beyond our small tribe. This is how we evolved and survived and nothing can change this.
That's not how I evolved.
I evolved through the spirit of mutual co-operation.
My tribe learnt to embrace the other tribes and learn from them and profit from our interactions.
We haven't forgotten how to do the predator thing or how to dominate, fight and kill. But we have never been limited to it.
I kill every day. I married outside my tribe. Lassie movies make me cry.
I have no reason to hate anyone. By and large I am in a strong enough position not to let people treat me in a manner that would provoke that kind of reaction.
Every morning, when I wake up and look out my window into my sea of flowers, I think to myself.....this is paradise. And I have no reason not to be happy. And when people walk past my garden or come to visit and they see all the flowers it makes them happy too. Some of them anyway.
I'm not seeking to make a big difference in the world. Just a little one.
The mass is always stronger than any single individual. Predator or not, individually you are as weak as the rest of them. The people you call weak are only weak in your eyes because you see them individually,and not in the groups they are part of. Even if you kill one of the herd there will always be another to take its place, and they will just bring down each individual by sheer numbers. That's why you see consumerism for example being so prevalent. And that's why I told you to check a specific book on the matter. A group is stronger than an individual, a large group even stronger.
Even if for some reason the whole economy falls apart, and society is unable to support itself, don't be so arrogant as to think you will be having a "hell of a good time". That natural instinct of survival awakes to all in such cases, and humans ,all humans, adapt fast. Again the herd (in this cases groups/gangs) brings down any single individual or smaller group. It's just the natural order of things. Even wolves hunt in packs after all. Humans are no exeption, they are part of the natural order of things wether they choose to embrace it or not.
Lastly you are contradicting yourself. Just because someone isn't "individual" , it doesn't mean that they are "herd". There are more colors than black and white, and most people choose the middle ground or better yet what is better situationally.

Their instinct is to scream for someone else to help them...but no one ever does, because they are all afraid.
When the shit hits the fan, they'll hide somewhere...go to ground like rabbits and only the very bravest will come out to look for food.
However, even they will be no match for those of us who have trained our entire lives to be strong.
Toss an arm-chair quarterback into the ring with a trained fighter, and watch what happens.
Oh....and as far as choosing the "middle ground"....moderation results in mediocrity.

Which case you are referring to? If we start by analyzing individual scenarios, we won't get anywhere.
Fear is as a strong emotion as hate you know. Try go alone and push/punch someone weak that is surrounded by 30 buddies of his own. Now tell me what happens. Sure you may argue that you may sneak or use tactics or whatever, but unless you trained all your life for such situations the chances are in their favor.
When the shit hits the fan yes they will hide and need will protect them. And their numbers will guarantee safety even if half of them perish in the process. Unless all your life you were in the special ops training for the apocalypse, you will be marginally better individually. Their strength is numbers, the other people strength is their survival training. That's why it is situational.
As for your example with the trained fighter...In that example you put the weakness of one vs the strength of another. In that scenario yes the fighter wins. What happens when you put 20 of those against a trained fighter? In a straight fight numbers win. In survival scenarios, numbers again have an inherent advantage, because you need years of constant training+plus age vs 60 people that band together.
I will presume you have been in the army. Moderation is part of discipline and self control. If you can't moderate yourself, it's easier to lose it when random situations arise.
The problem with the world is not wether they are part of a herd or individuals, neither if they hate, love or anything in between. They can't control themselves, they can't discipline themselves and even if they don't fall prey to others they fall prey to their own selves, in which case they became weak.

What happens when someone opens fire at a mall? They all go running away screaming. That's one against many. Granted, one person trying to beat down an individual surrounded by his "herd-mates" will be at a disadvantage, but only an idiot would do that, and idiots don't deserve to live.

Adversity kills. A stronger person doesn't die as fast. The strongest people of all are able to avoid adversity completely or so well able to cope with it that it offers no fear. No hatred.
Why fight out of hatred rather than love?

I do have a question for some of you though.
Why is it when someone dies, like...all the way across the world, or someone you've never even met....why is it that you feel sad?
Or rather..HOW is it?
I don't understand, honestly. I feel nothing for the death or pain of others, except maybe amusement.
I've tried to put myself in your shoes, and try to understand, just to see what it might be like, but I can't.
People talk about death like it's some huge tragedy, and get all freaked out when someone dies. I think to myself "one down", and go about my buisiness.
I just don't understand herd mentality, I guess.
I can tell your just trying to sound all cool and haughty on the internet, you aren't impressing anyone by acting like a tough guy. You're trying hard to sound like a sociopath, except that a true sociopath probably wouldn't find amusement in death but rather a complete indifference, amusement would be more in line with a psycopath. But I know that you are neither.
I also find it hard to believe that you are middle-aged, but perhaps you never moved on from the mentality of an angst-filled teenager. Sorry to hear you never matured properly.
That and a sociopath wouldn't even attempt to explain himself or justify his or her lack of emotional connection.
That's why I said before all things are situational. In the mall situation the intelligent thing to do when someone ambushes you like this, it's to seek cover. Actually in all situations where you don't have the first strike the intelligent thing is to seek cover. How many of these individuals that open fire in malls, are alive?
And the mall is considered a "safe" area, so people are relaxed that's why it's a different situation.
The predator is not intelligent because it uses a weapon. It's intelligent because it analyzes a situation and adapts. Survival means to stay alive, first and foremost. A predator that can get food without a fight is the smart one. The one that seeks fights to become "stronger" is usually the food for the others.
You forget a thing in your logic. In the example above with the mall the people know that if they hide and raise the alarm, people that deal with such "individuals" come and take care of things. With the absence though of the above authorities people always tend to gather and protect themselves. Such things happen in the absence of official goverment. An example is in China when women in villages far away from the protection of the army had to train themselves in martial arts to avoid rape. You'd be surprised how fast people adapt when the shit hits the fan. Granted there are casualties that could be avoided if they did that thing earlier but we can't have it all.
I mentioned the army because the "predator" training is taught in many of the units.
