Yes they are optimising the engine so the game will run as smoothly as possible even on a high graphics options. It seems to me that you are just being overly skeptical and negative on what the company are trying to achieve or quite simply havnt been following the development of the game indepth.
Started playing mmorpg's in 1996 and have been hooked ever since. It began with Kingdom of Drakkar, Ultima Online, Everquest, DAoC, WoW...
Don't be nieve. You can't fit 10 gallons of water into a 10 ounce tube. You can't push millions of polys or 2048x2048 sheets into the video card without screen stutter or hitching. I don't care how good your code is, there are just limitations to what can be done in MMO's with current technology.
Don't use FPS games as an example because those are small closed levels, or limited to 30 poeple, not all of which are on the screen at the same time but all over the map (and usualy out of visual range). Plus the range of environment textures for the multitudes of flora/characters/objects/terrain will bog down a high end system.
I'm all for seeing a game that performs well in mass scale pvp but there is no magic bullet. People will turn down their settings to get a better framerate.

Yeah...right. *sigh* I'm negative for pointing out that some people are putting up assumptions as fact. Sure.
I am a skeptic. never claimed to be anything else, but at least I have the good grace to grant DF the possibility of being everything it promises to be while you people do not even want to accept that there's a chance it might not do all the hype justice.
And they are both Siege Battle games. So they should be close in terms of graphics. Darkfall developer team has been able to code a more effective code for the game allowing better graphics. Their artists are also more dedicated than those of Warhammers I believe.
I highlighted the parts of the post I was disagreeing to. As you can see, it has nothing to do with liking one graphic-style better than the next. It is the claim that DF's engine IS better than WAR's, plus the claim DF's artists are more dedicated which I was objecting to. Sorry if that somehow got lost in the back and forth.
No worries mate was my bad for skimming through lol. With all the hate DF seems to spure in a few it's become natural reaction to get defensive an I appologise. As far as coding goes I can't say much on that but artist wise I am pretty sure each games artists are equally dedicated. The big wigs call the shots not the artists so you can't blame much on those guys.
Blizzard - While I do not like WoW at all or the graphics I know for a fact they have a dedicated art staff in general.
Mythic - While I do not enjoy the graphics of Warhammer, They to have a very dedicated art staff
DarkFall - I like the graphics and it realy seems like they have a dedicated art staff.
I do not like the guys in Charge at Blizzard , it's less about the game and more about the money. Can't really blame them though it is a buisness.
I really really don't like the guys in charge over at Mythic. Lead Devs might be great guys but EA owns em and I really don't care for them myself, but again it is a buisness so I can't really blame them.
Here's where it gets a bit different. Aventurine is run by gamers, This is a major advantage imo. As long as they have the dev skill to go with the gamer spirit then this would give them an advantage. Gamer > Suits as far as making a game imo.

Yes but there is a difference between if your computer can handle the graphics itself or if the engine can handle it. From what i gather they are making the game so that the engine can handle large scale battles effectively.

Jvac actualy did a good job describing this so I am going to quote him.
"the traditional limitation on AI -- why it's so bad in MMORPGs -- is that most MMOs run on servers that operate as essentially single computers. Even EVE, which runs on a 100+ PC node cluster, is essentially just a collection of single PCs hooked up to each other, with each PC in the cluster serving 1 or more fixed-size zones, for instance Jita, the trade hub, runs on a single PC. If that PC goes down, Jita goes down.
Good NPC AI eats up a lot of CPU, so current MMOs are forced to limit the level of AI processing so that their zones don't crash.
Like EVE, Darkfall is also cluster-based, except Darkfall has been built on top of much more advanced server tech, such that world zones can be dynamically resized and redistributed to other PCs in the server cluster. So, if a ton of players pack into a small area in Darkfall and the server that is currently serving that zone reaches too high of a load that it begins to lag, the server software redistributes the zones that PC is currently handling to redistribute the load to other PCs in the cluster (ie: ones that have only a few people in them). This is known in the industry as dynamic load balancing.
With this infrastructure, Darkfall doesn't have the same AI limitations - they are only limited by the total processing power of the whole server cluster, which can be easily expanded by adding more PCs.
Why don't other MMOs use this approach? Well they are starting to... But mostly because it takes a long time to develop the server infrastructure to do the dynamic redistribution properly, and it's not easy because of the requirement for high availability, high concurrency shared state management. It partially explains why Darkfall has taken so long to develop.
There is more info, from one of the Darkfall devs themselves here.
In case you're wondering how tf i know all this, I am a bioinformatian (ie: scientist programmer) and have worked with this kind of tech for a number of years to process large amounts of science data. "
The thing is yes it is limited with standard technology. However Aventurine isn't using what most MMO's use it's actualy a bit innovative on its on. They also have the advantage that there using an engine that they madespecificaly for DarkFall. So they have a bit more than can do than alot of current MMO's for the simple fact there using better tech + an engine made specificaly for DarkFall. They havent been spending all this time in Development twidling there thumbs lol.
i prefer WAR. its just artisticly more pleasing to the eye, imo
I dont agree. Darkfall one is more realistic and i wanna jump right in and play when i see the Darkfall Ork. Warhammer one is cartoonish, plain awful graphic style.
I like both to be honest (big Warhammer fan here). Each game has gone for a different graphical philosophy. I wouldn't say that one was better or worse than the other since it's comparing apples and oranges. I would compare Warhammers graphics with WoW's though (cartoony) and Darkfall's with ... I donno ... EQ2's slightly more realistic graphics perhaps? It's all a matter of taste tbh.
Just cant take cartoonish graphic style like the Warhammer ones. It just dont get me going.
they both look like they have 2 or 3 different artistic directors, so there's no cohesion... but to me WAR's graphics appear to mesh together, where Darkfall's throws randomness to the wind with what graphical enhancements each art model will use... which ultimately turns me to vote for WAR. On a side note for the OP: when you're trying to compare 2 games, you should chose a less blurry picture for the one you want to favor. Honestly, if it's a motion or heat blur, it's ruining the experience of the screenshot.
Sure, you can say that Warhammer is all cartoonish graphics, but that dont get me exited the least. Warhammer graphics looks like its only computer createdv with no human artist behind it, like a disney movie, no artistic skill at all. Warhammer have very poor graphic style. Its graphics for the ones that accept less.
Warhammer's graphical style (and UI lol) just invokes too many thoughts of wow for me. I like darkfall's style, it's unique.
I wholeheartedly concur, good sir.
I call WAR WoWHammer online... i mean yes, the graphics are slightly better than WoW.. and they have a couple more features, but it seemed like I started playing WoW again when i played WAR.
And when youve beaten the living crap out of WoW and waited for new content for months just to have your endgame gear vendored, and keep doing the same thing you always did when it does come out, you feel that your time in this style of MMO is at its end.
Im sure WAR will end up alot better than WoW, but its just not what im looking for anymore. My days of playing a linear game are over for awhile.
The greenskin reminded me a lot of WoW as well as the Evergreen trees but every other zone looks nothing like WoW and looking more to LOTRO style. But with Blizzard taking the Warhammer art and tweaking it to their own that's why they have similar art styles. But WAR's textures are way better than WoW no doubt about that. You will notice the difference when you zoom into things.
But Darkfall's graphics really are not that bad I just don't like the style of the art, character models look funny to me but the environments look good. But its really hard to compare the 2 kinds of games because its both different types of art style and graphics. It all comes down to personal preference.
ROFL. Darkfall graphic style is exactly what is 100% superior to Warhammer cartoon graphics. If you dont see this then you have very poor taste or is a Warhammer fanbois. I know you have a record of being the second choice.
Singsofdeath, im too lazy to search right now and because i probably wont find the source but i know for a fact that Aventurine are trying to code the engine so it will support very large battle's with no lag, its also one of the reason why they took out hitboxes for all the various parts of the body, i have a feeling though that it was mentioned in one of the earlier videos. I also remember seeing it talked about in an article or something somewhere.
Yes. They said that. I know it. Does it work? I do not know that. All I'm saying here is that people are comparing a released game to a soon-to-be-released game. That makes no sense. It's like comparing the taste of a dish already in front of you, to the taste of a dish you have yet to sample. You can -hope- and -think- that the dish will taste a certain way, but you will not know until you have tasted it.
Please people, all I want is that people stop acting as though DF was already released. This can -HURT- the game in the long run.
There basing opinions on looks from screenshots of the two. The premise of the debate is on the screenshots alone which they can do because both exist. If I could not see any screen shots of DarkFall then I would agree with you. But based on the Screenshots of Warhammer on there official site and DarkFall screenshots on there official site I have to agree with those that say DarkFall looks better. This is just my opinion based on the evidence at hand.
No. They are basing their opinions on the belief that DF will actually look like the screenshot linked in large scale PvP battles, whereas WAR has proven it can handle large-scale battles with the graphics in that screenshot.
I'm not discussing anyone who says they like one artstyle better than the other. That is subjective opinion and I respect people's tastes. What I am saying is that you have yet to see DF's graphics/engine at work, except for the video, which was, to be honest, nowhere near as pretty as that screenshot. TAs i said earlier, this could be due to video-compression, or other reasons.
And to see if DF runs smoothly in large-scale PvP with graphics quality slightly higher than the screenshot linked, we'll have to wait for the game to release. Can we agree to that?
There is better videos on Darkfall graphic wise, check this one out -
And what were comparing here is ingame screenshot graphics and style. Darkfall is as i see it totally superior to Warhammer on graphics. I mean Warhammer is plain ugly with it's cartoonish graphics. Cant understand how anyone can think it's even close to Darkfalls graphics. Must be blind fans of Warhammer.
When you think of it, graphics never made a game good. If the playing isnt fun, then no matter how good the graphics are, the game will fail. As long as the graphiscs are decent, I'm willing to try any game.

Yep, DarkQ post +1.
Started playing mmorpg's in 1996 and have been hooked ever since. It began with Kingdom of Drakkar, Ultima Online, Everquest, DAoC, WoW...
Reading over this thread makes me sad. It shows that people who have done little research into a game, or understand little about it, still go out attempting to alter the opinions of others rather than seeking information and trying to get to the truth.
Secondly, to whoever it was that commented that the armor shines too much and looks like it is covered in plastic...this shine is very deliberate. The creators want high quality metals to shine in this game because there is no radar screen, so you have to use your eyes to actually spot people, and the foliage to actually hide. Heavy metal armor shines because being well armored is specifically meant to have the drawback of being spotted easily - the glimmer can be seen from afar. The Devs do these things for a reason, and this may be why it appears at times that the artwork doesn't mesh as well - some of the art is being driven by actual game mechanics and not just fun-fun simplistic eye candy.
And for those who believe other MMORPGs are a viable comparison when discussing lag in Darkfall. I'll just quote the Dev since most people here don't bother to read him. And if for whatever reason you choose not to believe him, call him a liar, etc....then you won't be happy until the game is out and nothing short of that or open beta will do....so why don't you leave and come back then?
Tasos Flambouras: The decision that Darkfall would support a high number of players came early in the technical design process. It was obvious that the numbers we wanted would be hard to support on the server end without clustering, so we started evaluating available clustering technologies. None of them met our requirements at the time, and we soon understood that we would need to do this ourselves. After a lot of brainstorming and experimentation, we arrived at a model for distributed computing which we’ve pretty much stayed with since then.
Throughout every part of game development, we’ve designed and programmed using asynchronous communication in between very small, movable modules. This has imposed restrictions on the programmers, but it has also helped error location and debugging immensely. We can spread the game servers across anything in between one and several thousand computers. Additionally, we can move modules in between computers while the game is up and running, making load balancing a simple matter of looking at resource utilization before moving modules around.
Another problem with a high number of players is the limited resources of player PCs, and limitations in internet connectivity. There areseveral levels of optimizations intended to reduce lag and problems due to these issues. Among these is what we like to consider a quite innovative mechanism for dynamic level-of-detail adjustment, of course in addition to both context-aware and plain binary compression mechanisms for network data.
The combination of a distributed model for servers, which will allow us to always have enough CPU power, and inventive optimizations that can balance CPU usage against network performance, gives us a mechanism where resource limitations could be solved by adding a few more servers.
That about wraps up this thread. If you chose not to believe any of the information out there, then wtf are you doing on darkfall's thread? That's the question they can never answer.
Warhammer's graphical style (and UI lol) just invokes too many thoughts of wow for me. I like darkfall's style, it's unique.

Christ is that all you have to say in 5 posts in a row? Ok we get it you don't like the "Cartoonish" graphics, who cares? Its only opinions anyways and saying that people have very poor taste, thats just being an asshat. People like different things why can't you just except it and live your life instead of putting others down just because they dont agree.
Yeah I can say Im a fanboi big deal and your a darkfall fanboi big deal. You like your game, I like my game. People can argue this till the cows come home and nobody will ever change the others mind.
Yeah okay let's go with the faggoty paintshopro looking bullshit that probably isn't even an in game screenshot , from a game that will probly never be released! lol..
----------------------------- Real as Reality Television!!!
And no, the Video shown is no evidence, because the quality of the graphics in the Video is WAY below that in the screenshot pasted up there. It may be due to the compression or the capturing, but fact remains, I have not seen any evidence that DF can sport PvP battles of the massive scale they promise with the graphics they promise.
They have said many times that the Darkfall engine has dynamic level of detail (LOD), meaning the engine will automatically drop some image quality to maintain a minimum frame rate, if/when needed.
It's clear that a TON of image quality was lost in the video -- skip to the part involving the crafting/trading scenes and look at the quality of the text there. Compare the image and animation quality of even the sites and cities video to the 17min gameplay video -- big difference!
The screenshots are the best indication of the true graphics quality; i'm not worried, DF graphics are easily better than WOW/WAR and not that far behind AoC for the most part.
IMO it's really the things we *can't* see in screenshots -- the dynamism of the world: the wind moving through the grass and trees, the full-scene dynamic shadows -- that make Darkfall graphics something special IMO.
Darkfall is far superior, I mean they have visual cues to tell you how wounded or close to death people are in combat. You need this because you dont have any health bars.
Also I just like the artistic theme of Darkfall alot better than WARs.
The thing is yes it is limited with standard technology. However Aventurine isn't using what most MMO's use it's actualy a bit innovative on its on. While it's nice to be quoted, it has to be remembered that their server tech won't make any difference at all to preventing *graphics* lag, though theoretically, it *should* greatly minimise/eliminate *server* lag. There is no real way to prevent *network* lag other than to have a good ping (latency) to the server you play on.
whether there's graphics lag only depends on your graphics card, game settings, and of course, how well-optimised the graphics engine is. Darkfall engine has LOD, so it will drop image quality to maintain framerate, so on top of their fairly low polygon budget, they have really done everything they can to make battles as smooth as possible from a technical standpoint.
of course, we'll all just have to wait to see how it turns out.
urgh, that screenshot you linked is nearly 3 years old. a better one is this. this also nicely shows the contrast between metal and non-metal armour with respect to reflectivity and ultimately, stealth capability.

Yep, DarkQ post +1.
Reading over this thread makes me sad. It shows that people who have done little research into a game, or understand little about it, still go out attempting to alter the opinions of others rather than seeking information and trying to get to the truth.
First off, I think this pic is a better comparison, since both it and WAR's are in normal lighting without lava effects and whatnot: http://dawn-online.net/ScreenShots/Darkfall/darkfallHuman1.jpg
Yeah okay let's go with the faggoty paintshopro looking bullshit that probably isn't even an in game screenshot , from a game that will probly never be released! lol..

Real as Reality Television!!!

Yeah, so WAR's graphics look much better. What's the big deal? I really don't like the DF character graphics at all.
urgh, that screenshot you linked is nearly 3 years old. a better one is this. this also nicely shows the contrast between metal and non-metal armour with respect to reflectivity and ultimately, stealth capability.
