As a PVE player, I don't like being ganked nor do I like PVP. But I'll take a PVP game that gives me a free and open world to wander in over a linear quest-laden PVE crapfest any day. In other words, I'm saying I'd rather be ganked and looted than bored to tears in some Candy-land theme park game. Bring it on.

If your dumb enough to get caught out hunting and lose all your stuff then it's more your fault for not being cautious enough in a dangerous world. Key word her DANGEROUS... not wimpy. Honestly there are so many other MMO's available for people that dont like PVP please go play those. We cant have every MMO like WOW or WAR or LOTRO... and would we really want them all to be?? Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Darkfall!
Ganking is fine. In the wolrd of FFA PvP (which I'm guessing alot of the people complaining about Darkfall, have never played) the timeleine of a tough character, who sticks it out goes something like this. Noob is born. Noob gets ganked. Noob gets ganked, again and again. (Now this is where some might quit) Noob asks for help and joins a guild/clan. Noob is able to learn game mechanics, PvP skills and good spots to hunt/PvP from guildmates. Noob is able to teach other people these things.
But that would mean you'll need basic social skills to advance in a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE game. Unthinkable!

Darkfall and other games like it are more like true roleplaying games because you can actually roleplay your actions in the gameworld......in a similar way that you can in a real pen & paper roleplaying game (eg D&D). A PvE game is more like a Fighting Fantasy adventure book where you can only do what the games content dictates for you. Its basicly just thousands of people reading an online book.
Why people would prefer to have a story told to them when they could be making their own story is beyond me.
Is this the price we must pay to have the other end of the spectrum- freedom, fun, PvP, and the risk/reward and nostalgia of UO? I have never had as much fun and excitement as when I played UO pre-trammel... BUT... 1) I was young then. I had plenty of time to waste, and wasted time without caring. Now, although part of me wants to experience classic pre-trammel UO, the other (more mature and intellectual) part of me keeps thinking "Why pay $15 a month to work for 3 hours getting gold, only to lose all of it because a Gank Squad of 15 men come by and kill me mercilessly- giving me no chance at all to win or fight back. Where is the fun in time-sinks? Where is the fun in losing hours of hard work? Where is the fun in having a great time in PvE only to have it end in anger and frustration that I couldnt do anything about the fact 10 professional PK's came up and killed my group of 3 WHILE we were already half dead?" There is no fun, only frustration- in being ganked, PK'd, and looted. Especially when you have no chance of winning (already hurt by monster, overwhelming odds, etc.) There IS fun in freedom, open PvP, attack-anyone, UO-type world.
This example is a lot like playing DAoC towards the end of its life. The sides were so unbalanced in the Zerg vs Zerg vs Zerg, that all I could do is run an 8-man, roaming around searching for something to fight. This resulted in a waste of time, and the end of my DAoC career. I quickly realized, I wasnt really playing the game or having fun enough to constitute playing or paying. The gameplay consisted of working for 1 hour to get a full group going, roaming for 20 minutes only to find a) Find a solo, which would be a 8v1 fight, which is boring bc they have no chance
b) Find a 2-3 man group, which again is a 8v3 fight, which is over before it began and thus boring.
c) Find the Zerg, running into 3 full groups of 24v8, which is over before it began and thus boring.
d) Find nothing, roaming again for 20 minutes.
e) The rare 1% chance of running into another full group and having a fair, fun battle of 8v8 And thus repeat, roam 20, a-e, roam 20, a-e, roam 20. So when I reailzed I had been playing for 4 hours, but actually only got to play for about 10 minutes, I quit. It was fun- but it was wasting away TONS of my time, and felt like a waste of life.
I am wondering if the risk/reward is going to be worth it? It has been many, many years since my pre-trammel UO days, and I will never play another MMO with time-sinks. Whether those time sinks are long travel times and grinding just to be able to have fun (most MMO's) or time sinks that consist of playing, only to be PK'd and have to start over from scratch. A time sink is a time sink.
Frustration is frustration.
Unfair fights suck, and regardless if you're the winner or loser- they're boring. Edit: There is a reason I dont play EQ1. Talk about a great game- but HUGE time sinks. There is a reason games like Vanguard added riftways, and future games are getting rid of death penalties and travelling. Time sinks are a thing of the past, and people honestly dont want to pay, play, or have fun if it means the majority of the time is going to be boring, frustrating, or draining. Discuss.
Then don't play, easy as that.
Assassin's like to do it in the dark and from behind.
In before flames. I must admit it is an interesting mechanic and one I have not experienced before. I know that when (if?) I get around to playing DF I'll only ever run around with the crappiest stuff that I'm not afraid to lose. Nothing would piss me off more than losing some uber crafted sword after being ganked. There is a fine line between risk vs. reward and hair-tearing frustration. My game time is more limited now than it ever was, and I want to be able to achieve something when I play, not lose a day's hard work in one bad fight.
True. In UO, you kept everything in the bank, and only took what you absolutely needed. That was actually very fun.
Also, loot in UO was easy to obtain, and easy to lose.
I'd go out, spend 4000 gold on a full platemail suit of armor and a nice weapon, hunt with it, port back to the bank everytime I got a large amount of gold, go back and repeat until I die, lose the armor, and that's that.
The result? Most of the time I made more money than I lost, or at the very minimum broke even. Often I wouldnt die, and would be able to use the gear another day.
PK's werent so much a problem because of the ability to *HIDE*, Recall, and Run, and how many safe zones there were. If attacking a grey, I could run to the bank (not a safe zone) but atleast stuff as much as I could in the bank before I died.
There were many keys to the lack of frustration and fun of it though.
1) Everything was easy to get, easy to lose, and it didnt matter if you lost anything, you could just buy more.
2) You still made a profit in gold.
3) PK's werent that big of a problem in most areas.
I actually liked that. Every other MMO has been heavily gear-centric. In UO, all you needed was a GM (master-crafted) weapon, and that's it. You didnt even need armor. You'd take out a weapon (or reagents) from your bank, a stack of bandages, and off to battle. Armor was a luxury that you put on, depending on how much risk you wanted, or how much you needed the advantage. No one carried around gold.
LMAO He Bought plate from the npcs to hunt and stayed away from the action yo O.o Carebear stick to a pve game this game is for true pkers i cant wait and i loved uo Atlantic Foreva 2k+ Murder Counts there and a good amount on Siege 2
Noob lmao scared of uneven gank squads? 3v1 in uo i beat people outnumbered with my nox hide mage and my aits its called know how to play the game hopefuly in darkfall player skill is also another thing that is important.
Have a crafter alt to make u all gear you need i know in uo i had a 7x crafter he was gm tailor gm alch gm blacksmith etc.. so i supplied myself with supplies il gladly let those peeps farm for some vanqs or good gear equiv and darkfall and take it from their hands for personal use and bank storage
Youll know what to wear and when to wear it. Some areas will be extremely dangerous and will require preperation before enterting.
You will be forced to actually communicate and form strong bonds with other players in order to gain protection and execute revenge. Eventually people will know who to mess with and who not to mess with.
If you put a lot of hard work into getting an item and then you lose it its only because you were careless or dont have a good enough rep : p And when you do lose it dont forget it IS a game and you should enjoy just being in it and doing runs (even if it is over and over again for an item).
All in all this game will form community and execute immersion. Hopefully.

exactly. soloers will have a real hard time on this game, but it's their call if they want to be solo heroes. I already have my gang and will do the best we can to gank these so called heroes.
Darkfall won't end up being a niche game. It will appeal to a variety of players. It is the first MMO is a while to allow dedicated crafting, the first with FPS combat, and one of thefirst with no classes at all.
Here is how to solve your issue about being ganked. You get friends to come farm with you, then they help you kill the gankers. Or you join a guild and hire guards in your guild city to protect you, end of story.

I know you are trolling, but to anyone buying into this just know Darkfall will change MMOs. It wont be anything far fetched and dramatic but I am excited about this game.
Because things mean more, and yet at the same time they don't.
Because it allows for more interaction between players which in turn allows you to shape the world and have more or and impact.
And because it allows for a lot more random situations to happen in general that add to excitement and allow the game not to be just the same old boring grind day in and day out over and over and over and over till you hit level 50 and maybe start an alt to repeat the same boring grind all over again.

While I don't like the Trolling Attempt made in the originally quoted post, I'd like to say the following:
Darkfall will -not- change MMO's. If a game of DF's caliber had the chance to change MMO's, EVE would have done so a long time ago, because it has a lot of what DF offers -and- it is successful.
Darkfall -will- if it releases successfully and racks up a stable customer-base, change the way MMO's are delivered, maybe. A big maybe there. But to be honest, we already see a trend in the industry. More and more companies do not announce a game until they are well into the development cycle and even if they do, they keep all information about it vague and/or non-existant.
Darkfall won't change the genre, but it might bring some fresh wind and make other developers pause before maintaining old practices. And if it does that, it will be a success regardless of numbers.
Darkfall won't "change" MMO's because developers already are attempting to change. Where that inspiration came from I don't know, but the twitch combat genre is slowly making it's way into MMO's.
Black Prophey, Infinity: QFE, Fallen Earth, Earthrise, Huxley, Darkfall, etc
You must gamble if you want to feel the adrenaline rush of fighting for your life.
I bet in DF unbalanced numbered fights can be fun because there are no Direct damage spells and friendly fire.... You can dodge, you can align them. Its going to be a hell of a rush.

"Actualy im 22 and i played uo since beta and for years on on Atlantic Server also i think this game isnt for you O.o"
Can you please tell me why they allowed a 11 year old in beta?
And please, by all means, explain how you "pwned 3v1" as a hide nox mage at the age of 11.
I'm sorry, but you're way too young to be a part of UO since beta. You're also way too young to have "pwned the newbs" as you so wholeheartedly put it.
22 years old, and you still act like a child... very sad.
If there is any game for me, it is Darkfall. Just because being ganked, PK'd, and lamed is frustrating and the opposite of fun (NO ONE enjoys that. NO ONE finds that fun.) doesn't mean there is plenty of other things about this game to make it great.
No one can deny the FACT that being griefed, ganked, and unfairly PK'd is NOT fun and sucks, rather in the form of frustration, a boring time sink, or just the sole fact that when you are fighting a monster at 50% health, and instantly within 1 seconds before you can react your screen goes black "YOU ARE DEAD" it is not fun in any way.
Im sorry, but your 11 year old hide nox skillz can't compete with instant kill caused by a gank group of griefers hitting your newly made character while you're being attacked by a group of NPC monsters. You cant use skillz if you die before it's humanly possible to assess what is happening.
This is an intelligent, mature, interesting discussion about the balance between the pros and cons of total freedom. It isn't so black and white to say "Total freedom pwns bc i rulz!!!!" or "I am a carebear and i hate PvP and cant stand to be attacked by anything waaa"
Yep... a 22 year old who fails to realize that the beta for ultima online happened before Sept 25, 1997, which would make you younger than 11 years old. Pwn those newbs! An Nox!
I have played in open pvp multiplayer games since the days of MUDs. It seems like a lot of this has evolved from that. Then came UO, now comes Darkfall. There have been a bunch of games in between, of course, but Darkfall really seems to be touching on that old school open world "do anything" feel.
One thing I have noticed is that full open world PvP doesn't seem to translate as well as it used to. Why? There's way more people. You will always have Tommy the unemployed fruit . or Timmy the 12 year-old whose mom lets him game 24/7, with his 50 friends who just want to go sick on people for the sake of doing so. Yes, you can do things to counteract this, but it can be burnt.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited about Darkfall and it could work. If it can touch on a little bit of the mechanics in older games, including MUDs, it could be amazing. If you can bank or use some kind of recall spell that would help a lot as well. It's totally doable...I'm just saying, i understand some of the misgivings of those who are employed and successful at real life.
And I have to disagree, being pk'd can be fun. It makes the rewards that much sweeter when you get revenge or survive...especially if you set up macros to mate their corpse or some such mature thing. Basically, we'll see how the game goes if/when we can actually play it.

Hopefully.
playing: darkfall
waiting: earthrise
exactly. soloers will have a real hard time on this game, but it's their call if they want to be solo heroes.

I dont believe you played UO anymore than 3 years ago, because your mental age is still apparently only 13.
You cannot convince me that you played UO when you were 5.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Things that cannot be lost are not as precious as that which can be.
end of story xD
