I was reading on the darkfall forums, and I stumbled upon this thread: http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=93973
I thought it was a kinda interesting thread, so I read through a few pages until I eventually got to a post from a darkfall moderator:
"This might help.

"We've limited global chat channels compared to many other games, but guild chat is something we simply can not remove for many reasons, one of the more important being that we see it as an effort to level the playing field between people who use 3rd party communications, and those that don’t use them.
Guild and group chat are the only global chat channels we have. We also have single recipient /tell PMs.""

Yes, this means NO local chat, NO regional chat, NO trade chat, NO yell chat, NO broadcast chat, NO chat at all EXCEPT Guild, Group, and PM.
Personally this is a HUGE turnoff. If this is actually true, my hype meter for this game went from a 30 of 10 to a 6 of 10.
Without the chat options that they're leaving out, the game will likely feel like a single player. I likely will never hear from that one kid I pk'd, i'll never hear people selling items, i'll never hear random idiot spammers.
While some of those things may be annoying at times, they're (IMO) a crucial part to the MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER aspect of an MMORPG.
Just curious to hear your thoughts on this.

I do like chat channels. I don't know why people are against them.
I would speculate that things might have changed since that article was written, especially after the storm of protest when WAR launched. If you look on the leaked screenshots you can see there is communication taking place in the chat window but we don't know what kind of channel it is. Also I would think that there is certainly /say and /yell channels regardless.
My preference would be regional chat and trade channels in the cities, but not global covering the whole game world.
There is an extensive ingame message board system which I haven't seen in other game, this is good but it doesn't compensate lack of chat channels.
Honestly? What MMO have you played that was anywhere near the scale that this game's supposed to be in which all chat was absent except pm's and guild chat?
Go ahead... Take your time
That is actually also a major turn off for me.
It's always fun to get into a good conversation on a global chat, and if you are on the wee hours of the night where your guild isn't thriving and your friends are sleeping...
It is going to be a lonely game. This is very, very, very lame.
The absence of those chats makes this alot more realistic if you ask me and I love it. Plus I hate games like WOW where everywhere you go you have spam rattling off non-stop about chuck norris. When your out in the wilderness alone... you SHOULD be alone
Do you know how bored and lonely I would get if all I could do is talk to a passerby who may just end up killing me anyway?
Its a dumb idea, not for realism purposes, but seriously... that means no Newbie Help channel, no trade channel, no LFG channel.
Its a game dude, not a simulation.
They have PM's according to what you quoted below so...
Sure you will. He'll probably send you a /tell calling you a ... whatever after you PK'ed him. Unless you put him on /blist so you didn't have to hear his crying, I guess.
I do like local chat, but I can see why they would not want to institute it into a full loot PvP game. It only makes sense in a "Survival of the Fittest" world. Think about this:
When you are going down the highway and speeding at 85 mph, and you see a trooper pointed in the other direction waiting for those speeders, do you always flash highbeams or do you just say "Well, hope they don't get caught. But if they do, they shoulda known this is a speedtrap area."
Most people do NOT flash for cops anymore, so people usually get tickets left/right. Its sounds like that they want the equivalent of that in this game.
People who walk down the street in NYC while looking at the tops of buildings usually get mugged pretty good, cause no one tips them off that they look exactly like tourists.

wow talk about an ignorant post. this is also a turnoff for me why even play an mmo if there is not a robust chat system so you can have a group conversation without having to start a guild or get in a special chat box? this really limits the game and it might make it feel like a single player game. i would rather have people saying crappy jokes and bsing than no one talking at all. whats the point?
I hear there is also say chat. I hope they have global chat. It make it easier to set up wars and get groups together.

Yes... and its just as much a game with or without carebear chat channels.
Global chat to me has always made the world feel so much smaller. My fav mmos... UO, dransik.. etc didnt have this global chats. I hate feeling connected to everyone no matter where I go.
It's not a dumb idea.. it's just a different idea. Alot of people love the idea alot of people dont. Again this game was made to be colder and harder. IF your looking fror 100 chat channels to make your game easier you have many mmo's already providing this so you should be a happy guy
No local Chat? Thats kinda weird, I can live without global and trade chat, I usually turn them off in games anyways.
I think you should be able to hear yell's and local chat with in a certain radius, if they wan't it to be more realistic.
and you can
this is a good point like the nearer you get to town or when your in the town you should be able to see what people are yelling or whatever and when you get further away from that town you cant read it anymore because you will be out of range

How is wanting to talk to people carebear?
It's not that i'm mad at not having chat channels because I think they make the game easier, it's that i'm mad because I have no clue what i'll do to keep myself awake while traveling across this landmass that suppossedly takes 20 hours to cross.
Im not a fan of the global chats myself. Seen it my frist time in WoW and dont really care to see them again. (my opinion)

Who said you cant talk to people?? There is a PM system and guild chats and such. You can talk to people just fine.. but global chat makes games much easier.
So i didnt say wanting to people makes you carebear.. cuz this was never about just wanting to talk to people.
Need at least local chat or finding group is going to be impossible out side of guilds.

You are wrong, there are say and yell chat available. Been discussed before in the forum.
Well, they have described the gameplay pretty good.
You'd be in an area, walking or creeping through someplace carefully. Then you hear sounds of a fight through trees. You stop, look around and creep up slowly. As you come up you see two guys going at it... one guy's health is wayyyyy down- about 3/4s. The other guy is only down 1/4.
Now at this point you have a choice. You can either:
1. Help the guy low on health.
2. Help the guy high on health.
3. Wait and see who wins and then kill the winner.
4. Leave after watching the fight.
If someone had a local chat, and was sending "Hey, there's a guy PKing people by the big rock in the river at coords X34.3 Y34.5" over it, that kinda of messes up the feeling you'd get when stumbling on the battle. You'd automatically know WHO the PKer was and who the innocent was. No fun in that. More fun to figure it out as you come out of the woods with your sword in your hand, waiting to hear what the winner had to say for himself. Again, the world is billed as a Survival of the Fittest.
Again, I usually like local chats, but in a scenario like something above, it would totally ruin the surprise of this chance encounter.

Odd.. I never had problems finding groups in mmos before the global chat and LFG systems carebearized them. Everyone wants everythign served to them on a silver platter... this game isnt a silver platter serving game

Couldn't agree more. take for example UO. Enough said
I'm an avid supporter of Local chat, with chat bubbles.
With that, it means that the world wont be so sterile, where you see all these people hanging around, and yet there be no "life" so to speak.
That and I do like that you actually have to be within eyerange of the person you're talking to.
World chat, usually end up rather ugly, with whining, OOC, flaming, arguing, LOLZ'ers and whatnot, and very little immersive for a game... When you don't even have to meet with the people you talk to...
The last of the Trackers
Maybe the game will be fun enough to where you don't need a chat room.
Just another example of how epic the level of fail this game is aspiring to...
DooOOooOOoooooOOOM
Jesus Christ! Ruuuuun! Run, guys! It's inevitable!
Read the quote you posted again. Guild, PM, Group channels will be the only GLOBAL chat channels. There will still be local channels, hell, maybe even regional channels. You will be able to /say, /yell, possibly even /broadcast locally. There just won't be any global public channels. Global means anyone anywhere in the game world can hear it.
And to answer your question. UO only had /say when it was first released. If you weren't near someone, they couldn't hear you.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
