"We've limited global chat channels compared to many other games, but guild chat is something we simply can not remove for many reasons, one of the more important being that we see it as an effort to level the playing field between people who use 3rd party communications, and those that don’t use them.

Yes, this means NO local chat, NO regional chat, NO trade chat, NO yell chat, NO broadcast chat, NO chat at all EXCEPT Guild, Group, and PM.
Personally this is a HUGE turnoff. If this is actually true, my hype meter for this game went from a 30 of 10 to a 6 of 10.
Without the chat options that they're leaving out, the game will likely feel like a single player. I likely will never hear from that one kid I pk'd, i'll never hear people selling items, i'll never hear random idiot spammers.
While some of those things may be annoying at times, they're (IMO) a crucial part to the MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER aspect of an MMORPG.
Just curious to hear your thoughts on this.

Article by Tasos Flambouras, Associate Producer Darkfall

I was messaged yesterday by a community member alerting me to a thread on the Darkfall boards having to do with global chat: whether to limit it or not. Claus got the same message, and this is what he has to say on global chat:

"We've limited global chat channels compared to many other games, but guild chat is something we simply can not remove for many reasons, one of the more important being that we see it as an effort to level the playing field between people who use 3rd party communications, and those that don't use them.

Guild and group chat are the only global chat channels we have. We also have single recipient /tell PMs."

um, so, the only "global" chat channels are guild and group... global means you can hear it anywhere in the game, right?  so you want a bunch of chat channels that can be heard by all players all over the game at the same time?  so when that kid that you pk'd ends up pk'ing you and you end up getting gang-ganked repeatedly, you want everyone that is online at that time to be able to hear you whine?

or does global chat channel mean something else?

edit:  i guess my thoughts on this are... what are you whining about?  am i misreading the quoted from tasos, or are you?

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

People seriously just need to read more before posting and stuff. check your facts and stuff like that.

the most arguments in this thread is because no1 cares to define "global chat". for some it's server wide and some see almost everything bigger than /shout as "global". argueing over undefined topics is just retarded.

2nd biggest flaw in this thread is people trying to compare with different games, most people that jump on this wagon just press reply on OPs post or maybe on 1 of the post on whatever is the newest page, again read more or you just stand out as stupid.

for me global really means global. having 10k people in the same chat is retarded and would be so full of spam and crap that no1 would be able to use it for any good. the rate of crap being thrown out in this channel would be insane.

I think that guild, group, PM, yell and say is what would be best for DF. you can't really have city channels since only a few cities will be in the game from launch, other cities will be playermade and playerrun. There will be plenty of people within yelling range in the starting towns since they will be the largest trade hubs in the start of the game, new players will be able to ask questions and stuff like that here, this will also be the place to go if you find quest that you are not able to overcome by yourself ( even tho I don't think there will be many group quests in the game, since it will be more like "you walk in the woods and find an ogre with an awsome-looking club, so you call some friends and go waste it" and less "go kill ogre and I'll give you some gold"."

faction wide chat is not a good idea either, since player interaction isn't restricted to factions, guilds/groups can be made of all factions, tho it's not neceserely a good idea.

just my thougts on stuff. And before you  flame me for low post-count, I'd just like to add that it's not the amount of crap you say that makes you smarter it's the amount of crap you hear.

Do you know how bored and lonely I would get if all I could do is talk to a passerby who may just end up killing me anyway?

Its a dumb idea, not for realism purposes, but seriously... that means no Newbie Help channel, no trade channel, no LFG channel.

Its a game dude, not a simulation.

Then it's obviously not your kind of game. I don't want to be walking around a "dangerous" looking forest where I see no one and get spam after spam of global messages. It's pathetic. Yes, I think there should be "some" kind of areal chat (maybe make it a certain distance), but I am completely opposed to global chat in Darkfall or any sandbox MMO that claims to be dangerous.

Keep the global chat to the global-chat kind of games. We all know what kind I'm talking about.

Guild and group chat are the only global chat channels we have. We also have single recipient /tell PMs."

Of all the reasons he could have used, he used that of "levelling the playing field" to justify guild chat but not general chat?  Good grief, if he sees the "level playing field" as being between guildies who use Vent and those who don't, he misses the point completely.

Voice chat is pretty much mandatory in most "competitive" guilds these days, which means the "level playing field" Tasos and Claus seek is simply moot because the guilds will set their own standards and just exclude those who can't or won't meet them.  So the "level playing field for guildies" argument is nonsense.

In the meantime, not including a global general chat does all the opposite of "levelling the playing field".  It makes the large guilds omnipotent at the expense of ordinary players and even smaller guilds.

Is it any wonder that Darkfall is considered an industry joke?  It's not just the unkept promises (if Jan. 22 passes without a release, I hope the rabid supporters will finally wake up instead of coming up with more excuses), the seemingly empty grandstanding by Tasos and Company, or the tight secrecy being maintained when it just reinforces already widespread claims of vaporware.  It's also the developers' steadfast belief that they can build a game based on the concept that driving away casual players and small guilds through unlimited ganking, griefing and numbers-trump-everything tactics can make for a successful venture and their relying exclusively on the most hardcore, difficult to please and fickle segment of the gaming population for its long-term success.

The "community" which has congregated around Darkfall would discourage many from even trying it out, I think.  But in their warped mind, I suspect they regard this as "weeding out the losers", and therefore a success.

you got it all wrong. absence of global chat(except guild and group chat) just means that guild and group chat is the only way to communicate with somone globally. of course there will be local chats, like your immediate surroundings, and i strongly suspect there will be a chat channel for a city, or at least for city districts. local chat is different to global chat. in wow you had for example a global looking for group channel, in aoc global kingdom chats (whole cimmeria f.x.) you wont have something like this in darkfall.

so your conclusion that there will be no local chat or no yell chat is simply wrong.

A inter-guilds diplomatic chat  would be an idea that could be created if needed and would destroy if last men leaves that chat ...

Other then that no global chat is needed ..currently play a game with no global chat ..works well

Never needed any global chat ...
