"Hello person posting on a site specifically for MMO's in a thread on a sub forum specifically for a particular game talking about meta features and making comparisons to other titles in the genre, and their meta features.
I can imagine they will have the same backlash as WAR did. People play an MMO for lots of reasons and one major reason is 'GLOBAL CHAT!!' so I think its a little strange they dont have it. For me Global Chat is a source of amusement while I craft, mine or just soloing around the place. Once in a while you get some epic debates going and I for one love this and it keeps me playing on. One huge detraction from WAR was the lack of social channels. It felt like I was the only one playing in the whole server. For a world as big as DF having no Global Chat will make it feel extremely empty.
No global chat is a gamebreaker for quite a few people.....THere are still people that play MMOs for the social aspect........Another game I played, Saga of Ryzom, also didnt like having a global channel, at least not one for players to just shoot the breeze in, and alot of players left because of that....... No global chat is easily in my top 5 gamebreakers and i wouldnt play an MMO that doesnt have it.....When I was researching WAR that was one of the first things that caught my eye and probably the main reason why I never tried it..... My two biggest concerns in any MMO is the combat and the community.
You summed it up better than me. WAR is the first game i played without Global Chat and it may well be a game breaker for me going forward. Especially for new players, its nice to see a noob say hi in global and have their questions answered if need be. The alternative is logging on for the first time and see the occasional person running by.... (I may be wrong here but doesn't WAR have global chat now?)
It has Tier-wide chat channels now and city chat channels, along with the basics like Guild, Alliance, etc. There is no "world-wide" chat channel but making a new channel is as simple as typing /chan ______ (if that channel doesn't already exist). Sometimes players have to take the initiative but for those who want it they're welcome to make it.
No local Chat? Thats kinda weird, I can live without global and trade chat, I usually turn them off in games anyways.
I think you should be able to hear yell's and local chat with in a certain radius, if they wan't it to be more realistic.
and you can
this, you have pms party chat guild chat and local chat, nothing happens in global chat other than breaking immersion and it also can break many sneak strategies (this is the main reason its not there). You feel more connected to the people you actually meet face to face this way.
EDIT: they have ingame boards people! this way no immersion is broken and noobs can ask questions!
I guess it doesn't really impact me much either way. I just don't understand how some think it's that big of deal to turn OFF global channels if you don't like them.
It is not about turning things off, it is about community filtering.
No global chat, like full PvP loot, will keep brats away.
It is part of DF design to specifically target a certain niche of player, and alienate more carebear oriented players, so they don't ruin the experience for the core players who will play this game.
That's one of the reason I like DF, Aventurine don't give a damn about the masses, they just want to make the best game they can for that kind of niche players.
I wish other devs had the balls to do the same.
Global chat = 'brats'. You heard it here first!
Seriously I'm going to put this in a non-personal way, that whole post is the most stupid, elitist, illogical shit I've ever read.
And I've read threads in Genereal Discussion

Yeah, right.
1. Full loot PvP attracts "brats" and griefers. Not saying that is the only people who like it, but they'll come crawling out of the woodwork for this game, global chat or not.
2. The company making DF is a business. Businesses exist to make money. If you believe even for a minute that they aren't interested in getting all the customers they can, you're out of touch with reality.
I doubt very seriously whether or not this decision comes down to having balls or not. Don't be surprised if global is added after the fact if it's really not in game at launch. WAR learned that lesson very quickly.

so much ignorance in this thread, they have in game global boards, so newbs can get help, you can ask basic questions, and useless spam is prevented.

Do you know that for sure? It seems you get tells, say, yell, guild and group at least that what has been said. A tier/area channel would be fine without global imo.

Heh... but you're forgetting how well that strategy has worked before for other MMOs.
Remember AoC when they went with the "Mature" rating, and we were all assured that this guaranteed that AoC's community would be more "Mature" than any other MMO community....

hmm... perhaps you have a point afterall.
They also have simi-full PvP, which went well too. To AOC's credit, the content was more mature.... The player base, not so much...but it’s the internets.
The writing and subject matter in AOC was more mature than just about any other MMO to date. If you happen to think T and A are the only things that make it mature, or adult.... You your self are not.

Brats don't like to rebuild their equipment when they get killed, I don't think you have a clear idea of the kind of people who likes Full PvP.
The kind of players you describe will get really annoyed by the fact that they won't have all their beloved equipement when they respawn after getting killed

Not at all, making a successful game for a niche can be very profitable. If your theory was right we would only listen to Britney Spear............I think that people forgot that games, like movies and music, sometimes are made for passion, which in turn bring also money of course.
Your mindset is exactly the same of Mythic, Funcom and SoE, which make games for the masses but without soul, we all know how it went..........

Heh yeah,
That was kinda my point.
The main thing the "Mature" rating attracted was the players that were all gah-gah over the the virtual skin-tone pixels.
There were many who could care less about the virtual flesh-tones and for them, they were happy that the lore of Howard's Conan was able to be followed for the most part.
It just seems that whenever it is predicted that such-and-such "feature" is going to attract a "different" or a "mature" audience or community... it pretty much has the opposite effect. That was the point I was going for.

Apparently you haven't played played a game with Loot PvP. The brats will level their crafting or buy gold to keep a couple of sets of decent gear and then proceed to grife lowbies and noobs non stop. Hell, they'll be people doing it wearing the starting armor. I agree with you on all other points. But an AH, and a global chat system would be nice. That you even concider reply to these people they hate Darkfal they have no clue whats it all about and never played true free for all pvp games and they are obvious carebears:P
All the energy replying to all these trolls pfff......im already tired:P
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
I don't like Global chat. It always ends up the same way.. *Crap* talking and racist/gay BS. How many times have you read peoples have filled sentences when they don't get their way?
That's an interesting comment. The funny part is the people making those comments are still in game, regardless of global chat. I would hope that DF would have a more mature community, but based on many of the concerns in this thread and others like it, I'm beginning to doubt that. What is it about PvP games that attracts the worst people?
I don't care about the crowd.. I don't think people should be able to hide their ignorance and bigotry behind the internet. I know people are generally, a bunch of jerks (if ananimity is allowed), but that still doesn't mean I should have to be subject to it.
You wouldn't have to do anything, you could turn the channel of if that was your wish.
No. It would be one more tool where my location could be given away by someone who felt the sting of my blade. And, like was mentioned, I shouldn't have to be at a disadvantage by not knowing when someone is coming for me, or my position is given away, and have to deal with stupid people..
Global chat is not just a GIANT chat room, it is a giant message board of "XX is at the goblin mounds!!" as well as "STFU, *** NUB"; and "Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer, too bad he's never cried"
Sorry, but turning it off is not an option.

You seem to confuse casual PvP players with hardcore ones. Those you are describing are no brats those are professional griefers, which we expect to find in games like DF. Same as Pirates in EvE, you need this kind of people otherwise the game will get dull. I might even play one if I fancy it.
There will be griefing in DF like there is in EvE and UO, but much less than other PvP games with no full loot PvP. If you think differently it is your opinion, but to be honest it is very easy to understand that majority of people who gank in normal PvP games are casual players which don't want the hassle to rebuild their equip every time they die. If someone has the passion and the patient to level a crafter in order to refurbish their main cannot be considered a brat.

I agree, to an extent. But since RMT trades are prevlant now and the experience I've had against people in Runescape (oh my god I can't believe I'm saying that), most of which are 12yr olds, I wouldn't be suprised if we do get some bratty ones too.

Just out of curiosity, does Runescape has Full Loot?
Anyway I always suggest people to play EVE if they want an idea on how real PvP works.
DF will be very similar to EVE but with fantasy setting (If I remember well EvE doesn't have a global chat either, a Regional one is as far as it goes)
I always liked EvE except I don't like Sci-Fi so I didn't play it long, now with DF I have the chance to play a game I truly like (that is if Mr Tasos is not bullshitting people of course)
I am not really for or against this, but I do not understand why so many people are saying that global chat makes a game easier. Can anyone explain this?
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."
John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman

The reason for this is you can say "hey anyone need quest X?" and get responses quicker than just waiting at the starting area for quest x and hope to get picked up by a random person/group.
Yeah, right.
1. Full loot PvP attracts "brats" and griefers. Not saying that is the only people who like it, but they'll come crawling out of the woodwork for this game, global chat or not.
Brats don't like to rebuild their equipment when they get killed, I don't think you have a clear idea of the kind of people who likes Full PvP.
The kind of players you describe will get really annoyed by the fact that they won't have all their beloved equipement when they respawn after getting killed
2. The company making DF is a business. Businesses exist to make money. If you believe even for a minute that they aren't interested in getting all the customers they can, you're out of touch with reality.
I doubt very seriously whether or not this decision comes down to having balls or not. Don't be surprised if global is added after the fact if it's really not in game at launch. WAR learned that lesson very quickly.
As I said, no Global Auction House, no Global Chat, Full Loot, are all part of the design and they are implemented for a very good reason, which is to filter the community and to make the game a little bit more realistic and immersive.
But I don't think you will ever get the fact there is people who like games like this
Apparently you haven't played played a game with Loot PvP. The brats will level their crafting or buy gold to keep a couple of sets of decent gear and then proceed to grife lowbies and noobs non stop. Hell, they'll be people doing it wearing the starting armor.
I agree with you on all other points. But an AH, and a global chat system would be nice. Oh well, back to <Mod edit> to get the items I want in game.
MOD EDIT really? .... wait nvm thatst the wrong place lol whoops. The site had a similar name but I guess its not running anymore. I mean places like guru where in game trading is done offline. see link below for the idea
Here's the deal. For those of you who don't want it, you could simply not use it. That option exists in every MMO I've played. I've yet to see one good reason for not global chat. It's hard for me to believe that any game could be called "feature complete" when it's missing a major feature like global chat.
Read some of the fewer posts above. They've stated why they dont want global chat. I havn't seen any good reasons to have global chat in the game.
Again, global chat can be in the game and not used by those who don't want to use it.
Let's be honest here. There's a lot of DF kiss ass going on. DF could come out and say they're limiting gameplay to 2 hours a day, and the same people would be on here talking about what a great decision that is. I honestly believe a lot of people have lost their ability to think rationally when it comes to this game. When is it better to have less options? In a sandbox game no less? Less = Less.
Last thing I want in a FFA PvP world is for people to be spamming other players and clans locations on global chat channels. Now if they can only figure out a way to block players from using live speak systems like Vent.
So basically you don't want an area wide alert channel because the carebear version of PK'ing you seem to feel you are going to get your kicks from, relies on the fact that you and your croonies can camp and gank the same poor bastard over and over with no way for the solo'er to call help into the area.
As for the second paragraph, yes turning it off would solve all of those concerns you seem to have.
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
Need at least local chat or finding group is going to be impossible out side of guilds.
Odd.. I never had problems finding groups in mmos before the global chat and LFG systems carebearized them. Everyone wants everythign served to them on a silver platter... this game isnt a silver platter serving game
Couldn't agree more. take for example UO. Enough said

Ryzom has a global chat, on the homeland that is.

No global chat is a plus as far as I'm concerned.
Sometimes players have to take the initiative but for those who want it they're welcome to make it.
and you can
this, you have pms party chat guild chat and local chat, nothing happens in global chat other than breaking immersion and it also can break many sneak strategies (this is the main reason its not there). You feel more connected to the people you actually meet face to face this way.
EDIT: they have ingame boards people! this way no immersion is broken and noobs can ask questions!

Remember AoC when they went with the "Mature" rating, and we were all assured that this guaranteed that AoC's community would be more "Mature" than any other MMO community....

Heh yeah,
That was kinda my point.
