EQ (1998) had region-wide chat. Pretty sure Neverwinter Nights did, too, though it was a LONG time ago I played that. My memories of Island of Kesmai are amazingly fuzzy, so can't help you there.
I find it interesting that a lot of the people who claim to "old school" and derisive of "WOW kiddies"... clearly aren't.
(Oh, you meant original UO? It had global chat -- it was called "ICQ", and no one played without it. Until a game can truly block the use of third party apps while the game is running -- dubious -- there's no point in having "features" which are trivially circumvented.)
If Darkfall ships with no global, or at least regional, chat, it will add it within six months.
Imo I would take the same stance as I do in most cases like this. Put in as much functionality as you can, in this instance that would mean a trade/global/area/LFG and those that don't like it have the ability to turn it off. Then everyones gets what they want.
All I see is a load of carebear bs about not wanting the chat channels because some wannbe pk'er doesn't like the channels but is affraid it will give others an advantage. Adapt and overcome.
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
Anyone that has played L2 will know what i am talking about, when someone goes red and you get people just shouting out for it then suddently you have 100 people from everywhere on your tail, this breaks immersion if i kill someone, your gonna have to go to town and ask for help not just randomly shout and whine for everyone to come and chase me.
Another thing is clan wars and bigger conflicts, global chats ALWAYS end up in flame wars with people trying to offend eachother as much as possible.
I am in favor tho of a trade channel as you enter/get near a town as that would make commerce and selling alot easier. This is beyond what DFO is or isnt gonna be its just a general thing MMO's should do IMO.
While I admire your "opinion" thats just what it is, and opinion. I dont believe not having a chat system will bring less to a game. Its worked before, and will work again. Not sure what your DF kiss ass is about. Just sounds like your getting bitter cause something you want in the game wont be there.
Actually, my opinion is that not having global chat is a bad thing. It's a fact that not having the feature will mean less options available to the players. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.
The DF kiss ass comment is just what it is. There are people on these boards that are completely against the game and anything having to do with it. Likewise, there are people here who blindly accept anything about the game as a good thing. Both are very bad for the health of Darkfall, and we see it daily on these forums. Instead of blindly loving or hating, the game would be better served with objective and constructive criticism. When something doesn't look right, I'm going to say so. Does that sound bitter? It shouldn't.
Both in WoW and AoC (especially in the latter) global chat proved and still proves to be nothing more than a kiddie MSN messenger showdown where smileys dictate the seriousness of the "discourse". Darkfall is radically different than the above-mentioned games and having no global chat goes along with it.
Ex: I was running around the forest and found somebody to PK. I attacked him and he yelled in regional chat "OMG HELP MEH! SOM1 ATTK MEH!!! PLS HELP I'M AT x,y!!!!!". After 30 seconds there were 10 people in the area decked out and ready to kill me. *sigh*
2: Global chat is a good thing:
Ex: Without global chat, won't the game feel empty? Sure, you'll see people here and there, but will they want to be social without having that one idiot who always spams up the global channel? What will I do when i'm bored walking across this huge landmass? What will I do when i'm bored pve'ing, or pk'ing, or harvesting when my guild isn't online or isn't very talkative?
3(?): Reading through the posts in that forum, it seems that the mod kinda implied that PMs, group, and guild chat would be the only chat options in the game. It also seems that the people replying to that quote believe that's what was implied as well. If this is true, (which nobody really knows) it would be a major downside to the game.

I was reading on the darkfall forums, and I stumbled upon this thread: http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=93973 I thought it was a kinda interesting thread, so I read through a few pages until I eventually got to a post from a darkfall moderator: "This might help. Quote:
"We've limited global chat channels compared to many other games, but guild chat is something we simply can not remove for many reasons, one of the more important being that we see it as an effort to level the playing field between people who use 3rd party communications, and those that don’t use them. Guild and group chat are the only global chat channels we have. We also have single recipient /tell PMs."" ---------- Yes, this means NO local chat, NO regional chat, NO trade chat, NO yell chat, NO broadcast chat, NO chat at all EXCEPT Guild, Group, and PM. Personally this is a HUGE turnoff. If this is actually true, my hype meter for this game went from a 30 of 10 to a 6 of 10. Without the chat options that they're leaving out, the game will likely feel like a single player. I likely will never hear from that one kid I pk'd, i'll never hear people selling items, i'll never hear random idiot spammers. While some of those things may be annoying at times, they're (IMO) a crucial part to the MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER aspect of an MMORPG. Just curious to hear your thoughts on this.
Dude, this is reffering specefically to global chats, your local say and yell channels will still be there. No I don't have a quote for it but seriously you don't either cus that quote is talking specefically about global channels...
Yes it's a good thing there is no other global chats... 10,000 people would be hell. The game doesn't breakup into areas as neatly as a lot of the other games like WoW do so thats obviously out... I mean theres no reall set in stone factions. races can all talk to each other. theres no horde and alliance to split up the groups even. Imagine your chat channels in wow being open to the entire server then multiply the number of active players by anywhere from 3-6.
I think theres a good reason there for not havimg more global chat channels.
So that leaves, Guild, Group, Yell, Say, and Tell.
If anything my surprise or hope is that there will be a number of additional guild channels much like how shadowbane was broken up.
EQ (1998) had region-wide chat. Pretty sure Neverwinter Nights did, too, though it was a LONG time ago I played that. My memories of Island of Kesmai are amazingly fuzzy, so can't help you there.

ICQ was more of a whisper type thing. You had to get a persons number to message them. It wasn't every random person talking at the same time.
Also to the person that said if you don't like global chat you can just turn it off. Thats true but me having it turned off doesn't stop someone from seeing me and them spamming where I am all over global chat.
Honestly one of the things I miss about UO but took for granted then was the trade places so to speak. There wasn't global chat so people would meet up and yell what they were selling at the bank or the blacksmith. People could really be merchants.

That's an interesting comment. The funny part is the people making those comments are still in game, regardless of global chat. I would hope that DF would have a more mature community, but based on many of the concerns in this thread and others like it, I'm beginning to doubt that. What is it about PvP games that attracts the worst people?
The lack of a global chat is not a good thing in my opinion although there was a time when I would have thought otherwise. I am thinking about Warhammer Online and how it originally released with no global chat. It was terrible and everyone hated it. It did indeed make the game feel lonely and very much like playing a bad quality single player game. A month later they added the global chat channel back in due to so many complaints and now it no longer feels like a bad quality single player game.......now it just feels like a bad quality mmo instead.
Although I like realism in games I must admit that I like seeing other people talking while I play.....even if the majority of people I meet in mmos are complete retards. I dont actually find it useful to be honest though. Its just a comfort thing for me. Hmmm......who knows maybe the lack of a global chat will work for Darkfall. From what I can gather it aims to be very different to other mmos so maybe the absense of the global chat channel for this game will be a good thing. We will have to wait and see.

BINGO!
Correct me if I'm wrong...
But hasn't it been completely OPTIONAL to have chat channels turned ON or OFF in any MMO that has them? I didn't recall any FORCED chat channels in MMO's... perhaps I'm mistaken?
I know that I hardly ever have OOC turned on in any MMO I play. I do like the global group and trade channels though.
I guess it doesn't really impact me much either way. I just don't understand how some think it's that big of deal to turn OFF global channels if you don't like them.
For those that do like them... they won't have the option at all.
I guess it doesn't really impact me much either way. I just don't understand how some think it's that big of deal to turn OFF global channels if you don't like them.
It is not about turning things off, it is about community filtering.
No global chat, like full PvP loot, will keep brats away.
It is part of DF design to specifically target a certain niche of player, and alienate more carebear oriented players, so they don't ruin the experience for the core players who will play this game.
That's one of the reason I like DF, Aventurine don't give a damn about the masses, they just want to make the best game they can for that kind of niche players.
I can imagine they will have the same backlash as WAR did. People play an MMO for lots of reasons and one major reason is 'GLOBAL CHAT!!' so I think its a little strange they dont have it. For me Global Chat is a source of amusement while I craft, mine or just soloing around the place. Once in a while you get some epic debates going and I for one love this and it keeps me playing on. One huge detraction from WAR was the lack of social channels. It felt like I was the only one playing in the whole server. For a world as big as DF having no Global Chat will make it feel extremely empty.
No global chat is a gamebreaker for quite a few people.....THere are still people that play MMOs for the social aspect........Another game I played, Saga of Ryzom, also didnt like having a global channel, at least not one for players to just shoot the breeze in, and alot of players left because of that....... No global chat is easily in my top 5 gamebreakers and i wouldnt play an MMO that doesnt have it.....When I was researching WAR that was one of the first things that caught my eye and probably the main reason why I never tried it..... My two biggest concerns in any MMO is the combat and the community.
You summed it up better than me. WAR is the first game i played without Global Chat and it may well be a game breaker for me going forward. Especially for new players, its nice to see a noob say hi in global and have their questions answered if need be. The alternative is logging on for the first time and see the occasional person running by.... (I may be wrong here but doesn't WAR have global chat now?)
I guess it doesn't really impact me much either way. I just don't understand how some think it's that big of deal to turn OFF global channels if you don't like them.

I wish other devs had the balls to do the same.
I guess it remains to be seen if their strategy works or not.
If they do Release the game on Jan. 22nd, 2009... we should know by this time next year if that strategy was successful.

I very much doubt they will not have a /say, to talk to multiple people who are close to you.

Always hating on instances in MMOs! Open worlds, open PvP, territory control and housing please. More persistence, more fun.
At last, a MMO without global chat.
/Say and /Yell are more than enough
That's an interesting comment. The funny part is the people making those comments are still in game, regardless of global chat. I would hope that DF would have a more mature community, but based on many of the concerns in this thread and others like it, I'm beginning to doubt that. What is it about PvP games that attracts the worst people?
I don't care about the crowd.. I don't think people should be able to hide their ignorance and bigotry behind the internet. I know people are generally, a bunch of jerks (if ananimity is allowed), but that still doesn't mean I should have to be subject to it.
You wouldn't have to do anything, you could turn the channel of if that was your wish.
I wish other devs had the balls to do the same.

I guess it remains to be seen if their strategy works or not.
If they do Release the game on Jan. 22nd, 2009... we should know by this time next year if that strategy was successful.
