It may be a big deal to you but for most people it isn't.  If this game turns out to be good then most people who will eventually buy it haven't even heard of Darkfall at this current time or it has not registered on their radar screen.  The only people who want this info are ardent die hard mmorpg followers, and mostly only those who suspect it's a dodgy game even care.  We are probably talking about a very small amount of people here.  Even those people will totally disregard it when the game releases and will base their purchasing decision on what the actual game is like.  This what I am planning on doing, I will wait for it to release and read what people write about it.

There is absolutely no reason for me to care about whether these details you want to see are available because they are likely to be the same as every other mmorpg and can look when it comes to paying time if it ever gets that far.  If it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't even check if they were available, that is how unimportant this is.  It's game, it will not be expensive.

The only question this leaves is whether or not producing it makes them appear bogus but thats not really relevent anyway as I will be researching real opinions before I buy it, and I don't think it does make them appear them dodgy as this is a indi company and I wouldn't expect them to be as customer focused as bigger publishers.  I am expecting customer service to be non existant or terrible when it launches and this won't discourage me either.

What the worst case scenario? I have to call my cc company and tell them to take the payment back thereby wasting a whole 5 mins of my time, I will not be outraged by this obviously.

When it comes to how taxes will be charged as a consumer it's your responsibility to know tax laws. Now if EU's/greece's tax laws are similar to the Unitd states 1. you pay sales tax at the point of purchase. 2. you don't pay sales tax on intangibles goods, so if you download the game there is no sales tax.

Someone from the EU would be better than I at explaining the VAT.  It's not the same as a sales tax.

For most MMOs those from NA haven't had to worry about the VAT because there has been a NA publisher and/or billing agent involved.  So, those in the NA were basically isolated from any VAT transactions.

Since those of us in NA will be having to download, purchase, and suscribe without any NA publisher and/or billing agent involved; that won't necessarily be the case for us this time.

I am unsure how it will work with Aventurine, as I've never used a service from the EU without going through some sort of NA intermediate company that took care of that for me.

Does our CC company take care of the VAT if we are indeed subject to it?

Are we supposed to mail in our VAT to the appropriate Greece VAT collection agency?

I really have no idea.  I just know that for other services that I've used that involve a company originating in the EU... they go through quite a bit of work to make sure it all works according to the EU's VAT laws.  A company from the EU can get into quite a bit of trouble if they don't collect and pay the appropriate amount for each person.

i want to play this bad, but ... i would like to purchase and subscribe through a NA distributer/publisher... if i subscibe through greece, and get my pc and account hacked, i can't really do anything about it.. but at least through an NA publisher it can get reported and something could be done, at least to protect your account i would think... but hell i'll probably subscribe or not in the first few hours or play i'm sure

Yeah, there are a LOT of unknowns for those of us in the NA.

That is probably the main disconnect with this "method" that Aventurine is attempting for DarkFall.  I know of zero other products that have been offered this way.  So, I have no experience to draw upon to find out how this will work when dealing directly with an EU company.

Logically you would think that the company itself would recognize that thier future customers would be confused as to how this will work.  So, you would think the company in question would provide information explaining how it will work, as that is what companies usually do... try and attract customers.

Well, that's where the logic leaves the stadium.  Not only are we given zero information... we are even rebuffed for asking about receiving information.

One would think that by thier actions that Aventurine were trying to attract as few customers as possible... especially customers from the NA.  I guess we'll see how well this "strategy" of their works in 17 more days.

WoW!  What CC company do you have?  You can get through to a live person, get bumped up to the supervisor, and explain the situation in 5 minutes?   I want your Bank!

Every time that I've had to call for that sort of thing... it was closer to 45 minutes before I even got a live person.  Then another 30 minutes to get the supervisor.  Then another 30 minutes explaining the situation.  Figure in some more time explaining what a MMO is...

Anyway by the time it's all said and done... it's usually money ahead for me to just eat it.

Have you never been on holiday and bought something on your credit or bank card abroad?  It's exactly the same as doing it in America.  What is there to explain?  You fill in your details and if you have a problem you talk to the company or in worse case scenario your bank.  Effectively there is no difference.  It's no different than buying something from another city in your own country.

The only thing that will notice is that you are charged in local currency, what the exchange rate is will be between you and your bank, got nothing to do with the company doing the charging.

Well fortunately where I live any fraudulent payments taken are the banks problem not the customers even if you have willingly given your details, I have had to use it once before but that was their cock up not mine but they still payed me immediately even before investigating it.

BTW sales tax in Europe is just included in the price, it's the company doing the selling that is responsible for paying it to the government.  All prices are shown including in VAT in the UK I haven't noticed it's any difference in Europe except in restaurants where they might add it on at the end.

It's crazy, but some people don't want every aspect of a game they're interested to give off the vibe of sloppy, incompetent, or lazy amateurs.
Obviously, none of that is an issue for you. If you think that that's normal (or even good), you aren't just weird- you're a fool.

I am glad to see that you are comfortable calling someone else a fool because they disagree with you.

I am not convinced Leodious is right about the DnL thing, but from what I have been able to tell, this is the perfect tactic for them.

You are all in a tizzy for the simple reason that there is NOT this sort of information flying around. I dare say this is deliberate, not sloppy. They cannot afford real adverts, so they do things this way.

It seems like there are many people that are interested in it, largely because of this lack of information.

And I would be willing to bet that even alot of people that don't like this method will pay for it anyway just to see what all the fuss is about. When they created the fuss themselves. It's brilliant.

You know, Ashrik, I noticed that you have just joined and all you seem to do is bash other people who might like Darkfall. I think maybe you are someone who got a temporary ban and wants to continue the fun in a new guise.

In fact, I do have information that indicates that this is a deliberate move on the part of Aventurine, though it would be breaking NDA to explain exaclty what. I don't know what their game is, but this is on purpose. My bet is that they know more about marketing their own game than you do, even if they are a small indie company. That's just me though.

Duh, Aventurine are all a bunch of evil masterminds. But tell me, how much money does it take to update your website with some (what should be) common information? If Tasos doesn't have the energy to lift his finger and tell the community things they want to know, I'll be watching how the real game turns out with a smirk on my face. Even if I'm wrong, because all this pre-launch hype is truly entertaining. Too bad it kills MMOs for the first 3-6 months

good points, and I seem to recall when Sega wanted to put out the Genesis, and go against the Giant of it's time Nintendo 8-bit... in the end Genesis did beat out the 8-bit... well until SNES came out... but still good point about their marketing strategy... Sega did the same thing, infact, if i recall they would put out just a few commericials then purposely stop production on their systems... what happens was that they generated phone calls from anxious would-be potential consumers, and those consumers would bother the stores, hence generating a "demand" side economy boost for the product... this strategy worked worked nicely for them at that time... Genesis become the "hot" hard to get item... I think X-Box 360 also did that as well, haulting their production run after their initial release...

with all the hot debate and furvor that has been going around this site about DF posts, it's clear evidence that this strategy is working well for Aventurine.

I probably will not play the Euro release if a form of payment is required.

The reason is simple:  the Euro release will not be the NA release.

If I play on a  Euro server, then the NA version releases and I decide to make the switch to the NA version; I could reasonably expect some issues:

I would expect to be charged for the NA release.  Aventurine (in Tasos interviews) has already hinted at it.  Likewise, any progress I made on the Euro server would stay there, resulting in me having to start over from scratch on the NA server.  I would also have to brace for the idea that the Euro version and the NA version could be different due to regional censorship laws and the possibility of a CoS type IP block that may force me to the NA servers and application version whether I want it or not.

Keep in mind, that many MMO's do have seperate regional servers with differeing rules...WoW being a good example, so Aventurine doing the same would not be unprecedented.

If none of the above happens, cool.  But the smart play for NA players would be to adopt a cautious wait and see attitude before committing one way or the other, especially in the absence of critical info in these regards.

Good luck getting that foreign CC transaction turned around and a charge back accomplished. You sure as hell won't get it in 5 minutes and may be lucky to get it in 5 months.

Talk to people that got fleeced by DnL's processor as to some of the problems they had dealing with a foreign transaction house who in that case even had a US branch!

Additionally for those of you thinking this is some kind of viral marketing campaign we all see how well that turned out for some big names like V:SoH and AoC.

I wish Adventurine luck but all I can see is that they are missing out big time on generating the proper hype IF THE GAME REALLY IS ALL THAT GOOD. My vote is that it is a POS and that will be proven out in 3 weeks.

I've already guessed in other threads what the reasoning is.

They don't have the people or the hardware to support more than 10-40k users at launch.  To attract anymore subscribers at launch will just be a waste to them, because they will become so frustrated that they can't login that they most likely will never become subscribers.  The wait will be unbearable for most... so their only strategy is to try and drive away potential customers before they pay out any money.

Aventurine has to play it coy though.  They don't want it known that this is the real reason they aren't doing "business as usual" when it comes to an MMO otherwise some players may feel like they've been played for the fool.

So, Tasos decides to give the song and dance about not liking advertising, marketing, blah, blah, etc.

In the end if it works... they'll be right where they want to be.  About 10-40k users and the time to grow the game smoothly and slowly.

If it doesn't work... they risk alienating the majority of their fan-base and they'll never have enough money to grow the game like they want to and they may end up not being able to stay afloat.

It's not really too hard to figure it out.  The evidence is there.  It just depends if a person wants to accept the only logical conclusion.  You gotta admit... it is a bizarre business strategy.

Talk to people that got fleeced by DnL's processor as to some of the problems they had dealing with a foreign transaction house who in that case even had a US branch!

Well I can only speak from my own experience, I don't know what your bank is like but personally I am not exaggerating when I say I have used my cc in about 35 different countries and have never had a problem except once and that was in my own country and it got fixed straight away.

    1. So potential customers can ready their systems and actually be able to play your game

    2. To relieve the minds of investors and future customers around the world who aren't convinced that you aren't an amateur in professionals clothing.

    3. To stop giving off the appearance that when it is announced, it's not because they just found out.

It's crazy, but some people don't want every aspect of a game they're interested to give off the vibe of sloppy, incompetent, or lazy amateurs.

Obviously, none of that is an issue for you. If you think that that's normal (or even good), you aren't just weird- you're a fool.

The company is small and I bet you are right. I doubt they can affor more than 5 servers at this time, but if the cap is reached quickly I don't think that will discourage players from buying the game. In fact it will have the oppoiste affect of attracting more coustomers.

I am inserting a poll because I am curious as to how many North Americans will pay to play on the European Servers:

So what do you think the answers in your poll stands for? You think only americans voted in your poll?

There is votes from the ones that never will play Darkfall at all in there. There is votes from me an European that dont have anything with your poll to do.

Darkfall cant deliver a NA servers from start, so what? Thats something we Europeans been all to familiar with during the years. Having to stand in line waiting for a game with the knowledge americans already is playing it. A good example is UO which i started over at the Atlantic server. You're just spolied and cant take being second in line for once.

Nah, Darkfall is a european created game and if they cant deliver servers all over the place at starters then of course Europe comes first. Will be fun owning americans with higher ping when games starts - in Europe.

    Have a nice day

LOL! Ok...now I know you're not serious, and you're just being contrary for the sake of being contrary.

No reasonable consumer is fine with just being told how much something costs, or if they can even run it in the first place at the moment they're buying a product. That's just stupidity in action, especially for an MMO.

This is the most absurd crap I've read in ages. Which part of -

THE PRODUCT IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE YET. IT IS NOT ON PRE-ORDER THUS THERE IS NO PRICING INFORMATION. - don't you get?

it is only common sense, you are so wrong wrong wrong wrong.

IF...IF...IF you only found out the price of Darkfall after you had submitted your credit card details and clicked "purchase" then your argument makes sense. This is not the case as the game is not on sale in any form yet. The pricing would be anounced to the public and made available both at launch and when clicking on "purchase".

    Fixed.

Find me another pay-to-play MMO at all within the past five years that has done what Aventurine is doing with Darkfall in terms of a total lack of information for anyone so close to release. Just one. I'd love to read about it.

And what will happen when those customers can't login... for weeks, or months?

Look how long it took Blizzard to get more servers online.

Now take a company like Aventurine with it's clout... how long will it take them.

So, these customers who paid for a game that they can never login to... they are going to happily wait while Tasos posts his "Soon" updates?  Me thinks you are overly optimistic of MMO player's patience.

Well hopefully they will be sensible and only sell the number of clients that they can support.

If the server has a hard cap, which is what they have said, then they'll be a limit on the number of copies to be sold. It will most likely be a first come first serve basis.

    FACEPALM.

    *Hands Aragon a sarcasm detector*

Read the OP's post again. Real slowly, carefully. Try to figure out what Darkfall is currently missing and then fill in the blanks.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Yeah. Probably not the best example to use, unless you're comparing Aventurine to NPCube.
